Abstract:Three-dimensional (3-D) meshes are commonly used to represent virtual surfaces and volumes. Over the past decade, 3-D meshes have emerged in industrial, medical, and entertainment applications, being of large practical significance for 3-D mesh steganography and steganalysis. In this article, we provide a systematic survey of the literature on 3-D mesh steganography and steganalysis. Compared with an earlier survey (Girdhar <italic xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">et al.</i> , 2017), we propose a new taxonomy of steganographic algorithms with four categories: 1) two-state domain, 2) LSB domain, 3) permutation domain, and 4) transform domain. Regarding steganalysis algorithms, we divide them into two categories: 1) universal steganalysis and 2) specific steganalysis. For each category, the history of technical developments and the current technological level are introduced and discussed. Finally, we highlight some promising future research directions and challenges in improving the performance of 3-D mesh steganography and steganalysis.
A Locatable Zero Watermarking Scheme and Visualization for 3D Mesh Models

Abstract:Nowadays, most 3D mesh model protections are based on embedding watermarking system. These methods have to change the original mesh data to achieve the watermarking. Considering the sensitivity and complexity of 3D mesh data, this paper proposes a disturbing free 'zero-watermarking' algorithm, which is based on octree partition. For each octant, we employ parameterization and Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) to analyze the 3D geometry signal and construct the zero-watermark with corresponding octree-codec. The integrity of protected 3D mesh can be checked through computing the similarity of watermark between original and processed mesh. Moreover, the results are represented in a visual way, which means the tendency of deviation and changed region will be colored according to our merits of similarity. The Experiment results verify that the algorithm is robust to various attacks including affine transformation, vetex reordering, noise addition, cropping, simplifying, and even mixed attack.

Abstract:Copyright protection and authentication of digital contents have become a significant issue in the current digital epoch with efficient communication mediums such as Internet. Digital watermarking technique is now one of the hot research fields of copyright protection for CAD graphic data under the network environment. But there are very limited techniques available for that because of its high shape-preserving demand. Zero-watermarking is such a good means to deal with it and it has lots of advantages such as high capacity, good robustness and various functions. In this paper, we will discuss zero- watermarking algorithm for CAD models and eventually propose a watermarking-based digital rights management system that would test our techniques.

Abstract:Most of the researchers on watermarking techniques have focused on protecting the copyright information in various data such as audio, image and video signals. However, relatively less watermarking techniques are in respect of copyright protection of 3D model objects. After analyzing the data structure of 3D models, we propose a novel and efficient algorithm which allows embedding public watermarks containing copyright information into 3D models consisting entirely of triangle meshes. In the proposed algorithm, watermarks are embedded into a 3D model by altering model vertices with weights and along directions that are all adaptive to the local geometry. The geometrybased algorithm allows of higher robustness with transparency. Experimental results and the attack analysis demonstrate that the proposed watermarking algorithm is transparent and robust against the combination of various attacks.

Abstract:We construct and implement a new Steganography algorithm based on the human visual system to hide a large amount of information into color BMP image. By adopting this method, we can further obtain better PSNR. Moreover, we can use different parameter to satisfy different requirements when we need high PSNR or high Capacity. The method is no need of referencing the original image when extracting the hided data from the stego-image. Our experimental results show the proposed method can reach the high capacity with good image quality.

Abstract:We propose a novel technique for steganography on 3-D meshes so as to resist steganalysis. The majority of existing methods modulate vertex coordinates to embed messages in a nonadaptive way. We take account of complexity of local regions as joint distortion of a triple unit (vertice) and coding method such as syndrome trellis codes to adaptively embed messages, which owns stronger security with respect to existing steganalysis. Key to the distortion is a novel formulation of adaptive steganography, which relies on some effective steganalytic features such as variation of vertex normal. We provide quantitative and qualitative comparisons of our method with several baselines against steganalytic features LFS64, LFS76, and ensemble classifiers, and show that it outperforms the current state of the art. Meanwhile, we proposed an attacking method on steganography proposed by Chao et al. (2009) with a high detection rate.

Abstract: Data hiding is the art of concealing messages with limited perceptual changes. Recently, deep learning has provided enriching perspectives for it and made significant progress. In this work, we conduct a brief yet comprehensive review of existing literature and outline three meta-architectures. Based on this, we summarize specific strategies for various applications of deep hiding, including steganography, light field messaging and watermarking. Finally, further insight into deep hiding is provided through incorporating the perspective of adversarial attack.

Abstract:The development of information technology has led to a significant increase in the share of multimedia traffic in data networks. This has necessitated to solve the following information security tasks in relation to multimedia data: protection against leakage of confidential information, as well as identifying the source of the leak; ensuring the impossibility of unauthorized changes; copyright protection for digital objects. To solve such kind of problems, methods of steganography and watermarking are designed that implement embedding in digital objects hidden information sequences for various purposes. In this paper, an overview of promising research in the specified area is provided. First of all, we provide basic information about this field of research and consider the main applications of its methods. Next, we review works demonstrating current trends in the development of methods and algorithms for data hiding in digital images. This review is not exhaustive; it focuses on contemporary works illustrating current research directions in the field of information embedding in digital images. This is the main feature of review, which distinguishes it from previously published reviews. The paper concludes with an analysis of identified problems in the field of digital steganography and digital watermarking.

Abstract:Steganography is the art of concealing information in a cover media in such a way that the presence of the information is unknown. Digital image steganography accomplishes the potential for protected communication that is crucial in most of the applications nowadays. Steganography has several beneficial applications. It has been driven to the frontrunner of present security systems by the amazing development in computational power, the rise in security consciousness. The main challenge in proposing a steganographic technique is to maintain a suitable balance among higher embedding capacity, imperceptibility, and security that separate it from correlated systems like cryptography and watermarking. This article offers an extensive state-of-the-art review and analysis of some recent steganographic techniques. Furthermore, we have discussed popular steganography tools in detail. Challenges in the recent deep learning based steganographic techniques have been addressed. To explore the domain, the article concludes with mentioning some future research directions.

Abstract:Recently digital watermarking has emerged as a candidate solution for reusable IP core protection. The key idea of IP watermarking is try to use IP cores as cover media, and hide some digital information (watermarks) in their circuit designs, for intellectual property authentication and infringements tracing. In this paper, we present the basic research framework and survey the recent advancement on IP watermarking techniques. Several typical IP watermarking schemes are evaluated and compared. The technical difficulties are discussed, and future directions are outlined.
Adaptive 3D Mesh Steganography Based on Feature-Preserving Distortion

Abstract:Current 3D mesh steganography algorithms relying on geometric modification are prone to detection by steganalyzers. In traditional steganography, adaptive steganography has proven to be an efficient means of enhancing steganography security. Taking inspiration from this, we propose a highly adaptive embedding algorithm, guided by the principle of minimizing a carefully crafted distortion through efficient steganography codes. Specifically, we tailor a payload-limited embedding optimization problem for 3D settings and devise a feature-preserving distortion (FPD) to measure the impact of message embedding. The distortion takes on an additive form and is defined as a weighted difference of the effective steganalytic subfeatures utilized by the current 3D steganalyzers. With practicality in mind, we refine the distortion to enhance robustness and computational efficiency. By minimizing the FPD, our algorithm can preserve mesh features to a considerable extent, including steganalytic and geometric features, while achieving a high embedding capacity. During the practical embedding phase, we employ the Q-layered syndrome trellis code (STC). However, calculating the bit modification probability (BMP) for each layer of the Q-layered STC, given the variation of Q, can be cumbersome. To address this issue, we design a universal and automatic approach for the BMP calculation. The experimental results demonstrate that our algorithm achieves state-of-the-art performance in countering 3D steganalysis.

Abstract:Extensive research has been conducted on image steganography and watermarking algorithms, owing to their crucial rules in secret data transmission, copyright protection, and traceability. Despite promising results and numerous surveys proposed in the literature, there is still a lack of comprehensive analysis dedicated to deep learning-based image steganography and watermarking algorithms. In this paper, we focus on investigating three important aspects: neural networks, structure models, and training strategies. Our review covers the vast literature in this field. Furthermore, we provide a comprehensive statistical analysis from diverse perspectives, including models, loss functions, platforms, datasets, and attacks. Moreover, we conduct in a thorough comparative analysis and evaluation of existing representative algorithms, assessing their effectiveness within the context of deep learning. Finally, the challenges and potential research directions in the domain of deep-learning image steganography and watermarking algorithms are discussed to facilitate future research.

3D Print-Scan Resilient Localized Mesh Watermarking

Abstract:Existing 3D print-scan watermarking schemes usually have some limitations, such as the use of auxiliary materials and expensive high-resolution devices, and low visual quality of watermarked models. Considering these limitations, we propose a novel localized mesh watermarking method, which is resilient to 3D print-scan process and suitable for ordinary consumer-level 3D printing and scanning devices. In our scheme, we use the geodesic distances of the model's surface to determine the location and scope of the localized embedded watermark and construct a special tracking signal for the synchronization of the watermark. When detecting the watermark, we amplify the watermark signal through the residual mesh and achieve blind watermark detection. By evaluating various 3D mesh models, we demonstrate that the proposed localized watermarking method can ensure a high watermark extraction accuracy after the 3D print-scan process while maintaining high visual quality.

Abstract:The advancement of secure communication and identity verification fields has significantly increased through the use of deep learning techniques for data hiding. By embedding information into a noise-tolerant signal, such as audio, video, or images, digital watermarking and steganography techniques can be used to protect sensitive intellectual property (IP) and enable confidential communication, ensuring that the information embedded is only accessible to authorized parties. This survey provides an overview of recent developments in deep learning techniques deployed for data hiding, categorized systematically according to model architectures and noise injection methods. In addition, potential future research directions that unite digital watermarking and steganography on software engineering to enhance security and mitigate risks are suggested and deliberated. This contribution furthers the creation of a more trustworthy digital world and advances responsible artificial intelligence (AI).

Abstract:Permutation-based steganography in polygonal meshes can provide considerably large embedding capacities for hiding secret messages. However, corresponding steganalysis techniques against such methods have never been studied. This paper identifies the essential differences between naturally generated meshes and meshes produced by permutation-based steganography methods. It is found that the two types of meshes differ significantly in the distribution of topological distances between consecutive mesh elements. Therefore, by measuring the orderliness of the vertex list and the face list of meshes, we develop solutions for several mesh steganalysis problems. These solutions are effective, leading to high detection accuracy; and they are also universal, requiring no knowledge such as which steganography method is used and what data embedding rate is adopted for the detection mechanism to work. Moreover, this paper also presents a security-improved permutation-based mesh steganography approach, by taking advantage of the connectivity information of polygonal meshes and establishing a good trade-off between embedding capacity and undetectability. Without bringing global changes, our approach embeds secret messages into local neighborhoods on meshes. As a result, meshes generated by the proposed steganography approach tend to have natural structures that are unlikely to draw suspicions to steganalyzers.

Abstract:Modern text hiding is an intelligent programming technique which embeds a secret message/watermark into a cover text message/file in a hidden way to protect confidential information. Recently, text hiding in the form of watermarking and steganography has found broad applications in, for instance, covert communication, copyright protection, content authentication, etc. In contrast to text hiding, text steganalysis is the process and science of identifying whether a given carrier text file/message has hidden information in it, and, if possible, extracting/detecting the embedded hidden information. This paper presents an overview of state of the art of the text hiding area, and provides a comparative analysis of recent techniques, especially those focused on marking structural characteristics of digital text message/file to hide secret bits. Also, we discuss different types of attacks and their effects to highlight the pros and cons of the recently introduced approaches. Finally, we recommend some directions and guidelines for future works.

Abstract:Battles between steganography and counter-measures has become an important issue in information security. Aimed at a commonly used cover media, i.e., digital image, this article reviews the recent advances on the frontier of anti-steganography research. Regarding the major challenges posed by the rapid developments of steganographic techniques, the authors outline some typical methods and summarize the technological progress in steganalysis to provide useful information to the researchers on both sides of the cyber warfare. Emphases are laid on three challenging problems, which until a few years ago had been hard to tackle. First, combat the LSB matching steganography that avoids the statistic abnormality existing in the early simple LSB replacement method, either revealing the existence of secret information in a suspected image or estimating the length of the embedded data. Second, detect stego-images that only contain a very small amount of secret data. Third, develop universal detectors or classifiers to carry out steganalysis independent of the steganographic scheme. Some new trends and problems faced by the steganalysts are also discussed.
Steganalysis of 3D Objects Using Statistics of Local Feature Sets

Abstract:3D steganalysis aims to identify subtle invisible changes produced in graphical objects through digital watermarking or steganography. Sets of statistical representations of 3D features, extracted from both cover and stego 3D mesh objects, are used as inputs into machine learning classifiers in order to decide whether any information was hidden in the given graphical object. According to previous studies, sets of local geometry features can be used to define the differences between stego and cover-objects. The features proposed in this paper include those representing the local object curvature, vertex normals, the local geometry representation in the spherical coordinate system and are considered in various combinations with others. We also analyze the effectiveness of various 3D feature sets applied for steganalysis based on the Pearson correlation coefficient. The classifiers proposed in this study for discriminating the 3D stego and cover-objects include Support Vector Machine and the Fisher Linear Discriminant ensemble. Three different watermarking and steganographic methods are used for hiding information in the 3D objects used for testing the performance of the proposed steganalysis methodology.

Abstract:Steganography and steganalysis are the prominent research fields in information hiding paradigm. Steganography is the science of invisible communication while steganalysis is the detection of steganography. Steganography means “covered writing” that hides the existence of the message itself. Digital steganography provides potential for private and secure communication that has become the necessity of most of the applications in today’s world. Various multimedia carriers such as audio, text, video, image can act as cover media to carry secret information. In this paper, we have focused only on image steganography. This article provides a review of fundamental concepts, evaluation measures and security aspects of steganography system, various spatial and transform domain embedding schemes. In addition, image quality metrics that can be used for evaluation of stego images and cover selection measures that provide additional security to embedding scheme are also highlighted. Current research trends and directions to improve on existing methods are suggested.
