Abstract:Using thirteen years of data on pedestrian-vehicle crashes in North Carolina from 2007 to 2019, this research systematically investigates the contributing factors of pedestrian-injury severities considering the ordinal feature of injury severities, heterogeneity in random parameters, and abnormal spatiotemporal patterns. An improved spatiotemporal analysis framework is proposed to identify spatiotemporal patterns of outliers and clusters. Random parameters ordered logit models with heterogeneity in the means are utilized to model ordered injury severities, identify significant factors, explore unobserved heterogeneity across observations, and reveal correlations between factors. Results of different likelihood ratio tests indicate that significant spatiotemporal instability exists in factors across four spatiotemporal patterns (High-Low outlier, Low-High outlier, High-High cluster, and Low-Low cluster). Also, variations are observed in the marginal effects of several factors in specific spatiotemporal patterns. The impacts of fourteen groups of random parameters with heterogeneity in the means are further analyzed by calculating the shifts in proportions of crashes that suffer severer injuries. Specific countermeasures are suggested following the findings of factor impacts. In High-Low outliers, drunk drivers increase the probability of severer injuries of pedestrians in public vehicular areas from 16.3% to 92.8%. Meanwhile, in Low-Low clusters, dawn/dusk light environments increase the probability of severer injuries in crashes with drunk drivers from 79.3% to 99.9%. These further emphasize the importance of strengthening the alcohol test in identified public vehicular areas and turning on roadway lights in advance to prevent drunk driving in dawn/dusk light conditions. The insights of this research should be valuable to identify abnormal spatiotemporal patterns, investigate inherent heterogeneous effects, and provide specific measures to prevent pedestrian-vehicle crashes.
