Abstract:This study shows that the maturity structure of a firm's debt has a significant impact on its investment decisions. We show, after controlling for the effect of the overall level of leverage, that a higher percentage of long-term debt in total debt significantly reduces investment for firms with high growth opportunities. In contrast, the correlation between debt maturity and investment is not significant for firms with low growth opportunities. The results are strong at the firm level and at the business segment level. These results hold even after controlling for the endogeneity problem inherent in the relationship between total leverage, the maturity composition of leverage, and investment.

Abstract:This study revisits the relation between firms' choices of debt maturity and their investment in a dynamic world. Prior research, including Myers (1977), suggests that financing with short-term debt resolves the underinvestment problem caused by debt financing. In contrast, I establish that short-term debt can reduce the incentive to invest due to larger exposure to default risk from more frequent debt rollovers. Long-term debt, however, is more subject to illiquidity costs, so firms find optimal maturity by balancing these opposing forces. For the firm with average investment and financing, the agency cost arising from the underinvestment is 0.77% of firm value. This suggests that previous studies overestimate the cost by ignoring firms' flexibility in choosing maturity. I also measure firm-specific agency costs using likelihood-based structural estimation. The measured agency costs show significant cross-sectional variation due to heterogeneity in firm characteristics and convexity of the agency costs. The economy-wide average of the costs is 7.28%, which is considerably higher than the cost for the average firm.

Abstract:We study a novel aspect of a firm’s capital structure, namely, the profile of its debt maturity dates. In a simple theoretical framework we show that the dispersion of debt maturities constitutes an important dimension of capital structure choice, driven by firm characteristics and debt rollover risk. Guided by these predictions we establish two main empirical results. First, using an exogenous shock to rollover risk, we document a significant increase in maturity dispersion for firms that need to roll over maturing debt. Second, we find strong support that maturities of newly issued debt are influenced by pre-existing maturity profiles.

Abstract:Maturity mismatches in the financial sector have been extensively examined, but those in non-financial sectors have been largely overlooked. We explore why Chinese listed firms have a high short-term debt ratio from the perspective of asset-debt maturity mismatches, which involve firms using short-term debts to support their long-term investments. We investigate whether the maturity mismatch is actively or passively adopted by Chinese listed firms by analyzing the effect of financial constraints on maturity mismatches. We find that the mismatching behavior is more pronounced for firms with fewer financial constraints, supporting our active mismatch view. Reducing the cost of debt acts as an incentive for firms to actively adopt maturity mismatches. Our study thus identifies one reason for high short-term debt ratios in emerging markets.

Abstract:Maturing risky short-term debt can impose a stronger debt overhang effect than long-term does, distorting the firm’s investment decisions. We derive the optimal maturity structure based on the trade-off between long-term overhang in good times and (stronger) short-term overhang in bad times. The theory has implications on empirical studies of debt maturity structure, understanding the excessive defaults and underinvestment during recessions, market-based pricing of credit lines, and firm’s cash holdings.

Abstract:I develop a dynamic capital structure model in which shareholders determine a firm's leverage ratio, debt maturity, and default strategy. In my model, the firm's debt matures all at once. Therefore, after repaying the principal shareholders own all the firm's cash flows and can pick a new capital structure. The possibility to alter the capital structure at maturity gives shareholders the incentive to issue finite maturity debt and allows me to study firms' joint choice of leverage and debt maturity. I also extend my model by allowing for time-varying capital supply to study time-variation in firms' joint choice of leverage and debt maturity.

Abstract:This paper provides an empirical analysis of the effects of corporate debt maturity on firms' acquisition decisions using a large sample of acquisitions from 1991 to 2010. We find that firms with shorter debt maturity are less likely to undertake acquisitions. If they do, they are more likely to undertake smaller deals, take more time to complete, are less likely to make all cash offers, and tend to use less cash in the payment. These results support the predictions of the increased liquidity risk hypothesis. We also find that acquirers with shorter debt maturity realize higher announcement returns and experience better long-term stock returns and operating performance. These results suggest that short debt maturity improves the efficiency of capital allocation through acquisition decisions.

Abstract:We study the impact of heterogeneous debt structures on corporate financing and investment decisions in a dynamic trade-off model. The issuance of bank debt along with market debt accelerates investment and mitigates the ex-post debt overhang relative to exclusive market debt structures. A growth firm optimally increases its reliance on bank debt and decreases its usage of market debt when it has fewer valuable growth opportunities, its asset volatility is higher, its bankruptcy cost is lower, or it faces a low tax rate environment. We identify the non-monotonic effects of the cyclicality of growth opportunities on firms’ optimal debt composition.

Abstract:This paper investigates whether a firm's debt maturity structure affects the quality of its risk disclosures. Using a sample of U.S. public firms from 2005 to 2017, we provide robust evidence that a firm's exposure to refinancing risk, measured as the proportion of long-term debt that matures within one year, is positively correlated with the readability and specificity of risk disclosures. This relationship is stronger for firms that have greater concerns over refinancing risk and for firms operating in environments with lower proprietary disclosure costs. In addition, we show that high-quality risk disclosures can help firms mitigate refinancing risk by reducing the cost of future debt financing. Our study extends the current literature on risk disclosures and enhances the understanding of how refinancing risk shapes corporate disclosures.

Abstract:Perhaps, the most familiar idea underlying debt maturity choice is the maturity-matching hypothesis wherein liabilities’ maturities correlate with assets’ maturities. However, the maturity-matching hypothesis does not provide a comprehensive explanation for many empirical patterns of firm behavior. This study investigates the determinants of debt maturity choice using a panel of 50 Nigerian quoted firms between 1999 and 2014. Using simple correlation analysis and dynamic panel data regression techniques, the study documents the following findings. First, the marginal tax rate exerts positive influence on the use of short-term borrowing perhaps because firms exploit potential tax benefits of borrowing through the short-term channel, consistent with the tax hypothesis. Second, small firms with fewer tangible assets tend to utilize more short-term borrowing. This effect is more pronounced in unique industries and for dividend payers. Third, growth opportunities exert a weak positive influence on the use of short-term borrowing thus implying that short-term debt may play minor role in ameliorating the agency cost of underinvestment. However, firms with more volatile earnings and less liquid assets utilize less short-term borrowing. Finally, macroeconomic variables exert significant influences on the debt maturity choice with monetary policy and government debt wielding positive effects while private credit, term spread and economic growth have inverse effects. The findings generate important implications along four non-mutually exclusive views of debt maturity such as signaling, contracting-costs, tax and liquidity hypotheses. The study recommends corporate debt and macroeconomic policies that promote prudent use of debt maturities.

Abstract:This paper provides an empirical investigation of the maturity structure of corporate debt. A dynamic model is estimated by GMM estimation procedure using data for an unbalanced panel of 429 non‐financial UK firms over the period of 1983–96. The evidence provides strong support for the hypotheses that firms with more growth opportunities in their investment sets tend to have more shorter‐term debt and firm size exerts a negative impact on debt maturity structure. The results also support the maturity‐matching hypothesis that firms match the maturity structure of their debt to the maturity of their assets. There is less support for the view that firms use their debt maturity structure to signal information to the market. We do not find evidence for a negative correlation between taxes and debt maturity. Our results also suggest that firms have long‐term target ratios and they adjust to the target ratio relatively fast, which might indicate that the costs of being away from target ratios are significant for firms.

Abstract:We develop a dynamic investment options framework with optimal capital structure and analyze the effect of debt maturity. We find that in the absence of financing constraints short-term debt maximizes firm value. In contrast with most literature results, in the absence of constraints, higher volatility may increase initial debt for firms with low initial revenues, issuing long term debt that expires after the investment option maturity. This effect, which is due to the option value of receiving the value of assets and remaining tax savings, does not hold for short term debt and firms with high profitability, where an increase in volatility reduces the firm value. The importance of short-term debt is reduced in the presence of non-negative equity net worth or debt financing constraints and firms behave more conservatively in the use of initial debt. With non-negative equity net worth, higher volatility has adverse effects on the firm value, while with debt financing constraints higher volatility may enhance firm value for firms with relatively low revenue that have out-of-the-money investment options.

Abstract:Taking 91 corporate debts issued by listed companies over a period ranging from August 14,2007 to the end of 2011,but not the accounting statement data,as research objects,we analyze the factors affecting corporate debt maturity from three aspects such as the hypothesis of agency costs and the liquidity risk,the hypothesis of information asymmetry and the hypothesis of tax benefit.We find that the liquidity risk is the main effect on the maturity of a debt.The theory of agency costs and the hypothesis of information asymmetry are only partially confirmed.And the hypothesis of tax benefit is not subjected to any confirmation at all.This suggests that when making a decision on corporate debt maturity,Chinese listed companies mainly consider the liquidity risk they face.

Abstract:The current literature on the coordination of operations and finance does not differentiate long‐ and short‐term debts and therefore is silent on how firms’ debt maturity structure affects their short‐run financial and operational decisions. Through a dynamic inventory model that explicitly captures a firm's periodic decisions on inventory replenishment quantity, the amount of dividends net of capital subscriptions, and the amount of short‐term debt, we demonstrate that under coordinated short‐term operational and financial decisions, the firm's optimal inventory level increases initially as its long‐term debt rises; after the firm depletes its short‐term borrowing capacity, as the long‐term debt rises further, the inventory level decreases and then remains constant. In addition, we find that optimal coordinated decisions, in comparison with decentralized ones, yield lower inventories, require less cash, take larger short‐term loans, incur a lower probability of financial distress, and yield higher expected dividends net of capital subscriptions. Moreover, long‐ and short‐term debts are substitutes; an optimally leveraged firm needs less long‐term debt if it coordinates its short‐term decisions than if it decentralizes them.

Abstract:Debt maturity influences debt overhang: the reduced incentive for highly- levered borrowers to make real investments because some value accrues to debt. Reducing maturity can increase or decrease overhang even when shorter-term debt’s value depends less on firm value. Future overhang is more volatile for shorter-term debt, making future investment incentives volatile and influencing immediate investment incentives. With immediate investment, shorter-term debt typically imposes lower overhang; longer-term debt can impose less if firm value is more volatile in bad times. For future investments, reduced correlation between the value of assets-in-place and profitability of investment increases the overhang of shorter-term debt.

Abstract:Through OLS regression models,this study explores the impact of debt maturity structure on firm value in Chinese listed companies.We find the evidence that long-term debt usage is negative associate with firm value and the further research reveals that the negative association between long-term debt usage and firm value is more pronounced in firms with higher free cash flow.As a result,the use of short-term debt does increase firm value by curbing agency costs.

Abstract:This study highlights the corporate governance potential of debt maturity structure for Turkish firms through investigating its association with ownership and control structure. We model leverage and debt maturity as jointly endogenous under simultaneous equations framework. Firstly, we find that both concentrated ownership structure and presence of a large shareholder is directly but moderately related to corporate debt maturity. We also document that it is important for Turkish firms to match maturity of their assets with maturity of their liabilities. Our findings lend considerable support to the prediction that as firms get financially strong or have more growth opportunities they shorten their corporate debt maturity structure. Moreover, despite having a controlling large shareholder or a concentrated ownership structure, firms with growth opportunities still prefer shorter maturities in order to solve the underinvestment problems. Finally, firm size is positively associated with long‐term debt and our empirical analysis provides no evidence that taxes affect debt maturity structure.

Abstract:Abstract Using data on listed companies in T aiwan from 1998 to 2009, our study investigates how controlling shareholder structure can affect debt maturity structure. The results indicate a significant negative relationship between ownership and debt maturity in the sample companies when control rights are lower than required control shareholdings. Conversely, the results also demonstrate that the separation of control from ownership displays a significant positive impact on debt maturity for controlling shareholder structure when control rights exceed cash‐flow rights. Overall, our results show that there is an inverted U ‐shaped non‐linear relationship between control rights and the duration of liabilities in the control structure of ultimate controlling shareholders. Further, the consequence is that we find the required control shareholdings ratio serves as an important criterion in analyzing it, when dividing the control rights structure based on controlling shareholders into different combinations.

Abstract:Based on the perspective of investment and financing term structure, this study verifies that local government debt crowds out bank loans available to corporates, resulting in corporate maturity mismatch between investment and financing, namely, short-term financing for long-term investment. According to our heterogeneity analyses, the real impact of local government debt on maturity mismatch between investment and financing is more pronounced for non-state-owned enterprises and firms with high financing demand, located in cities with more local government debt and low financial development. Furthermore, our study reveals that local government debt and corporate maturity mismatch between investment and financing bring about underinvestment and default risk, which ultimately affects local sustainable economic development. This research contributes to the literature on Chinese-specific maturity mismatches.
