Abstract:Given their access to confidential information and tailor-made solutions, accounting firms and their clients form important and very close relations. On the one hand, accounting firms are bound by professionalism and codes of conduct, and on the other, they attempt to satisfy their clients’ needs. This may lead to immoral behaviour and breach of ethics, with risk intensifying if a client firm faces financial difficulties. In China, accounting firms have an opt out ‘incapability of awareness’ clause freeing them from responsibility. But given their influence, knowledge, and professional service, it has been suggested that accounting and auditing firms undertake ethical obligations to positively influence clients.
