Abstract:Maintenance activities play a key role in keeping performance, reliability and safety levels of generating facilities in power plants. Scheduled maintenance and imperfect condition-based maintenance often augmented by additional breakdown maintenance are the usual maintenance strategies employed by generating companies now in China. Recently, a new maintenance philosophy called as intelligent maintenance system was proposed. This paper describes the new advantages and characteristics of intelligent maintenance system, and shows the possible challenges to develop the intelligent maintenance system for generating equipment. The technologies of fault prognosis, maintenance scheduling and sensors etc. as the key elements of intelligent maintenance system in power plants are depicted in detail, and their future research directions are addressed respectively

Abstract:Structural health monitoring (SHM) takes a breakthrough of civil engineering by integrating electrical, magnetic, photic, acoustic, thermal and other physical variables, chemical variables, information technology, computer science and technology as well as communication technology into a civil structure to make the structure have self-sensing and self-diagnostic abilities. The SHM is also a basis of smart earth, which may take a profound impact on the behavior and lifestyle of society. The SHM includes sensing technology, data acquisition, transmission and management, and health diagnosis. In this paper, the sensing technologies are developed for monitoring of fatigue, corrosion, score and seismic damages by using integrating piezo-electric ceramic array with optical fiber Bragg Grating sensor array and ultrasonic monitoring technology. The approaches of health diagnosis for civil structures have been proposed by authors and their group. The damage detection approaches considering the uncertainties of civil structures and environmental factors are proposed, such as probabilistic damage identification approach based on dynamic sensitivity analysis and damage detection approach by using information fusion techniques. A multi-scale finite element model (FEM) updating approach is presented for conducting safety evaluation. The modeling approaches for various loads and responses using SHM data are proposed and the framework of SHM-based structure safety evaluation is established. Finally, the role of SHM in developing smart earth in the future is also put forwarded.

Abstract:Life-cycle performance evaluation is the basis of the life-cycle management of a civil structure. Structural health monitoring (SHM) is an in situ test technique used to evaluate the life-cycle performance of a civil structure. Unlike small-scale laboratory tests, SHM can provide comprehensive insight into the real spatial behaviors and performance of real full-scale civil structures under real actions on a real-time scale throughout the operational life. The large amount of civil infrastructure construction provides an opportunity to develop the SHM technique in mainland China. A number of sophisticated SHM systems have been implemented in civil structures in mainland China. Novel scientific research has been conducted based on monitoring data, while practical experience has revealed several challenges when implementing SHM. This paper first introduces two representative SHM systems for full-scale bridges. The framework of SHM and SHM-based life-cycle performance evaluation and control are then defined. Novel data acquisition, transmission and management techniques are proposed, which include the compressive sampling (CS)-based data acquisition technique for the reduction of mega data in SHM and the CS-based recovery approach for data loss in wireless sensor networks. Furthermore, the modeling approaches of monitored loads, environmental actions and their combination, as well as the response of the structure, are presented, including extreme value distribution and the accumulative fatigue damage model. The performance degradation models of some key structural elements were obtained by considering corrosion and fatigue-coupled effects. A time-variant safety evaluation was also conducted. Additionally, two disaster actions, SHM applications in wind engineering and earthquake engineering, are also described in this paper. Finally, the challenges in the SHM field are discussed.

Abstract:With rapid development of the large-scaled civil infrastructure, their sustainability and dependability have been the most important issues concerning social orders and people’s daily lives. In recent years, Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) for civil engineering has attracted much attention of researchers. Meanwhile, the latest progresses on the cyber-physical system, intelligent robot, wireless sensor network and data mining techniques have promoted the growth of intelligent structure monitoring and health management. This paper firstly introduces the development and classification of SHM of civil infrastructure. Secondly, the recent research progresses on its enabling technologies including sensors, intelligent detection robot, wireless sensors network, data analysis and management are reported. Next, an intelligent monitoring and health management system for metal roof sheathings system is presented as an application example. Finally, some future trends for SHM are discussed.

Abstract:We explored an adaptive maintenance model of the process environment to diagnose progressive faults in manufacturing systems. Progressive faults are usually caused by deterioration of the operating environment or aging and show stochastic properties. Many researchers have reported how to detect faults on the machine body in manufacturing systems. However, little research has been conducted on the process environment which causes progressive faults. To tackle this problem, we explored an adaptive maintenance model to detect progressive faults and repair the process environment on the E-repair location. When a difference of the environmental factor state is detected, it will combine the transcription factor and the state enzyme to locate fault source. Then the comprehensive maintenance program is derived to repair the operating environment while eliminating progressive faults. For the purpose of validation, this model was implemented on the process environment of the air separation plant. And the simulation experiments validated the feasibility and effectiveness of this method.

Abstract:Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) aims to develop automated systems for the continuous monitoring, inspection, and damage detection of structures with minimum labour involvement. The first step to set up a SHM system is to incorporate a level of structural sensing capability that is reliable and possesses long term stability. Smart sensing technologies including the applications of fibre optic sensors, piezoelectric sensors, magnetostrictive sensors and self-diagnosing fibre reinforced composites, possess very important capabilities of monitoring various physical or chemical parameters related to the health and therefore, durable service life of structures. In particular, piezoelectric sensors and magnetorestrictive sensors can serve as both sensors and actuators, which make SHM to be an active monitoring system. Thus, smart sensing technologies are now currently available, and can be utilized to the SHM of civil engineering structures. In this paper, the application of smart materials/sensors for the SHM of civil engineering structures is critically reviewed. The major focus is on the evaluations of laboratory and field studies of smart materials/sensors in civil engineering structures.

Abstract:Structural health monitoring (SHM) technology has been developed approximately for a decade, and many civil infrastructures have been installed SHM systems. These systems produce huge quantities of data each day. It is well-recognized that data mining and analysis for the massive volume of measurement data collected from SHM system of long-span bridge structures is increasingly becoming a world-wide research focus. This paper reviews the recently development of data mining and analysis on our research group, mainly including compressive sensing based data analysis for SHM, the identification of distribution of vehicle loads, the identification of time-varying cable tension forces, the assessment of cable under multiple factors coupling effects, the benchmark model of SHM, the software for SHM data analysis and design code for SHM systems.

Abstract:Structural health monitoring (SHM) is a multi-discipline field that involves the automatic sensing of structural loads and response by means of a large number of sensors and instruments, followed by a diagnosis of the structural health based on the collected data. Because an SHM system implemented into a structure automatically senses, evaluates, and warns about structural conditions in real time, massive data are a significant feature of SHM. The techniques related to massive data are referred to as data science and engineering, and include acquisition techniques, transition techniques, management techniques, and processing and mining algorithms for massive data. This paper provides a brief review of the state of the art of data science and engineering in SHM as investigated by these authors, and covers the compressive sampling-based data-acquisition algorithm, the anomaly data diagnosis approach using a deep learning algorithm, crack identification approaches using computer vision techniques, and condition assessment approaches for bridges using machine learning algorithms. Future trends are discussed in the conclusion.

Abstract:Structural health monitoring is currently a crucial measure for the analysis of structural safety. As a structural asset management approach, it can provide a cost-effective measure and has been used successfully in a variety of structures. In recent years, the development of fiber optic sensing technology and vision sensing technology has led to further advances in structural health monitoring. This paper focuses on the basic principles, recent advances, and current status of applications of these two sensing technologies. It provides the reader with a broad review of the literature. It introduces the advantages, limitations, and future directions of these two sensing technologies. In addition, the main contribution of this paper is that the integration of fiber optic sensing technology and vision sensing technology is discussed. This paper demonstrates the feasibility and application potential of this integration by citing numerous examples. The conclusions show that this new integrated sensing technology can effectively utilize the advantages of both fields.

Abstract:Sensing is the fundamental technique for sensor data acquisition in monitoring the operation condition of the machinery, structures and manufacturing processes. In this paper, we briefly discuss the general idea and advances of various new sensing technologies, including multi-physics sensing, smart materials and metamaterials sensing, microwave sensing, fibre optic sensors, and terahertz sensing, for measuring vibration, deformation, strain, acoustics, temperature, spectroscopic, etc. Based on the observations from the state of the art, we provide comprehensive discussions on the possible opportunities and challenges of these new sensing technologies so as to steer the future development.

Abstract:This paper includes five parts. The first is the sensing technology, in which ultrasonic-based sensing technology for scour monitoring of bridge piers, electro-chemistry-based distributed concrete cracks and automobile wireless sensors are introduced. The second is the application of compressive sensing technology in structural health monitoring, in which the recovery of lose data for wireless senor networks, spatial distribution of vehicles on the bridge and localization of acoustic emission source by using compressive technique are included. The third is damage monitoring and identification of seismically excited structures, in which data-driven seismic localization approach and nonlinear hysteretic model identification approach are proposed. The fourth is the monitoring for wind and wind effects of long-span bridges, the vortex-induced vibration of deck, suspended cables and stay cables is observed and the buffeting of bridge under Typhoon is also measured. The last one is the data analysis, modeling and safety evaluation of bridges based on structural health monitoring techniques.

Abstract:Structural health monitoring (SHM) plays a vital role in ensuring the integrity, safety, and reliability of civil engineering infrastructure. With the increasing complexity and aging of structures, the need for effective monitoring systems has become paramount. This abstract presents an overview of the field of structural health monitoring, highlighting its significance in civil engineering and exploring various techniques and technologies used for monitoring the health of infrastructure.The objective of structural health monitoring is to detect, assess, and predict the condition of structures in real-time, enabling proactive maintenance and minimizing the risk of catastrophic failures. Traditional inspection methods, such as visual inspection, have limitations in terms of cost, accuracy, and coverage. SHM provides continuous and automated monitoring, enabling the collection of data from various sensors installed on the structure. These sensors capture data related to structural behaviour, environmental conditions, and loading conditions, among others.This abstract delves into the different types of sensors employed in SHM for civil engineering infrastructure. These sensors include strain gauges, accelerometers, displacement transducers, temperature sensors, and corrosion sensors. Strain gauges measure the strain or deformation experienced by the structure, while accelerometers detect vibrations and dynamic responses. Displacement transducers monitor the movement or displacement of specific points, providing valuable information about structural deformations. Temperature sensors help in understanding the effect of temperature variations on the structural behaviour. Corrosion sensors detect the presence of corrosion, a significant issue in infrastructure deterioration.

Abstract:Condition-based maintenance refers to the installation of permanent sensors on a structure/system. By means of early fault detection, severe damage can be avoided, allowing efficient timing of maintenance works and avoiding unnecessary inspections at the same time. These are the goals for structural health monitoring (SHM). The changes caused by incipient damage on raw data collected by sensors are quite small, and are usually contaminated by noise and varying environmental factors, so the algorithms used to extract information from sensor data need to focus on sensitive damage features. The developments of SHM techniques over the last 20 years have been more related to algorithm improvements than to sensor progress, which essentially have been maintained without major conceptual changes (with regards to accelerometers, piezoelectric wafers, and fiber optic sensors). The main different SHM systems (vibration methods, strain-based fiber optics methods, guided waves, acoustic emission, and nanoparticle-doped resins) are reviewed, and the main issues to be solved are identified. Reliability is the key question, and can only be demonstrated through a probability of detection (POD) analysis. Attention has only been paid to this issue over the last ten years, but now it is a growing trend. Simulation of the SHM system is needed in order to reduce the number of experiments.

Abstract:This paper introduces the advances in structural health monitoring (SHM) made by the researchers in Mainland of China, which include novel sensors, approaches of damage detection and model updating, interpretation of measured data and applications of SHM systems in civil infrastructures. Novel sensors include fibre optic sensing technology-based sensors, nanotechnology-based sensors, corrosion sensors and wireless sensors. A series of methods for damage detection and identification of structural parameters and loads using signal processing techniques, e.g. as wavelet transformation, information fusion and fractal theory are presented. The statistic analysis of accumulated by SHM systems is performed. SHM systems have been implemented a number of bridges, buildings, underground buildings, offshore platforms, tunnels, pavement and pipelines. Abstract:Integrated structural health monitoring (SHM) uses the mechanism analysis, monitoring technology and data analytics to diagnose the classification, location and significance of structural situations (e.g., sudden or cumulative damages) to ensure the functionality and operation of bridges. Integrated SHM systems have improved the maintenance, management and decision-making of bridges by continuously monitoring and evaluating working conditions. This review article discusses the current process and future trends of bridge monitoring focusing on the cutting-edge SHM technologies, transmission and analytics methods of the sensing data, and prediction and early-warning models. In particular, four extensively applied sensing technologies (i.e., fiber optic sensors, piezoelectric sensors, global navigation satellite system and magnetostrictive sensors) are reviewed and compared, the wireless data transmission approaches (i.e., ZigBee, Bluetooth, NB-IoT, Wi-Fi, LoRa) are discussed, the artificial intelligence-based data processing methods are presented, and the performance prediction and early warning systems are summarized. In the end, the challenges and future research avenues of the current integrated SHM systems are discussed with respect to the characteristics of bridges.

Abstract:Structural health monitoring (SHM) is an important aspect of the assessment of various structures and infrastructure, which involves inspection, monitoring, and maintenance to support economics, quality of life and sustainability in civil engineering. Currently, research has been conducted in order to develop non-destructive techniques for SHM to extend the lifespan of monitored structures. This paper will review and summarize the recent advancements in non-destructive testing techniques, namely, sweep frequency approach, ground penetrating radar, infrared technique, fiber optics sensors, camera-based methods, laser scanner techniques, acoustic emission and ultrasonic techniques. Although some of the techniques are widely and successfully utilized in civil engineering, there are still challenges that researchers are addressing. One of the common challenges within the techniques is interpretation, analysis and automation of obtained data, which requires highly skilled and specialized experts. Therefore, researchers are investigating and applying artificial intelligence, namely machine learning algorithms to address the challenges. In addition, researchers have combined multiple techniques in order to improve accuracy and acquire additional parameters to enhance the measurement processes. This study mainly focuses on the scope and recent advancements of the Non-destructive Testing (NDT) application for SHM of concrete, masonry, timber and steel structures.

Abstract:As a field of study, structural health monitoring (SHM) sits at the crossroads of sensor technology, signal processing and structural engineering. The past decade has seen rapid growth in a variety of research works in structural health monitoring. However, there is concern among infrastructure owners and operators about the useful insights that can be obtained from SHM data. In this paper, a suspension bridge is taken as an example to show the role of its SHM system in facilitating its management and maintenance. Firstly, the function of the early-warning system, which is part of the SHM system, is explained through monitoring data of the deck surface temperature and the wind velocity. Secondly, SHM data are used to detect and analyse damage in the suspenders and expansion joints. Thirdly, SHM data are utilised in a load proof test to show the global behaviour of the bridge under passing vehicle loading. Finally, conclusions are drawn on the value of integrating SHM with the bridge maintenance.

Abstract:Structural health monitoring (SHM) is a type of on-site characterization of a real-world full-scale structure that is subjected to the real-world load cases. The fundamental element of SHM is the structural response measurements by sensors, the reliability of which is significant for safety assessment and other SHM applications. The paper proposed a method to diagnosis the fault in sensors using the correlation of measurements. The correlation of the variations of the measurements is examined using the sliding time windows, which is the principle to determine the fault in the sensors. The strain measurements from the SHM system of a real world structure, Shenzhen Bay Stadium, are performed to simulate the faults in sensors and to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.
