Abstract:It is investigated the adiabatic compression of picosecond soliton pulses from a DFB laser operating at 1550nm in the fibers with slowly decreasing dispersion (FSDD).High-quality soliton compression from 4.4 ps down to 830 fs in a 500m (FSDD) is obtained.The compression factor is about 5.3.Experimental results show that nonlinear pulse propagation in FSDD can provide a novel method to generate ultrashort pulses.

Abstract:The adiabatic compression of ultrashort pulses from a DFB laser operating at 1550 nm in the fibers with slowly decreasing dispersion (FSDD) is investigated. High quality soliton compressions from 4.4 ps down to 1.1 ps in a 100 m FSDD and from 4.4 ps down to 830 fs in a 500 m FSDD are obtained. Abstract:The spectral compression performance of the fundamental soliton in a dispersion-increasing fiber is investigated through numerically solving the generalized nonlinear Schrodinger equation. Based on the calculation results, we detailedly analyze the influence of the input peak power, the fiber length and the initial chirping on the output spectral width and the output center wavelength, and describe the evolution of the spectral width in the fiber. The calculation results show that spectral compression from 12.6 nm to 5.2 nm, i.e. spectral compression rate of 2.42, can be realized for the soliton with pulse width of 200 fs and center wavelength of 1550 nm propagating in the dispersion-increasing fiber with the length of 100 m whose group-velocity dispersion parameter linearly varies between -1 ps(2)/km and -11 ps(2)/km.

Abstract:Optical microfibers can show very strong normal dispersion (as high as 2700 ps2/km) around 2 μm, a highly desired feature for dispersion management in ultrafast lasers. Here we report a dissipative soliton fiber laser at 2 μm enabled by an optical microfiber. The full width at half-maximum of the optical spectrum was about 50 nm, and its flatness could be attributed to the third-order dispersion compensation provided by the optical microfiber. The pulse duration was measured to be 195 fs after a dechirping single-mode fiber. Our results suggest a new route to dissipative soliton fiber lasers at 2 μm, with a wide and flat spectrum and thus a short dechirped pulse.

Abstract:We present a numerical investigation on nonlinear propagation of femtosecond pulses in anomalously dispersive highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF) with positive third-order dispersion (TOD). Soliton self-frequency shift (SSFS) in the HNLF is shown to enable efficient spectral compression of ultrashort pulse whose parameters satisfy 0.8≤N≤1.3 for the soliton order N. A spectral-compression factor up to 2.5 can be achieved for 60-fs, 1550-nm fundamental solitons red-shifted to 1609nm in the HNLF. We show that the fiber TOD has significant influence on the SSFS-induced spectral-compression performance. Using HNLF with larger TOD parameter, greater spectral-compression factor can be obtained. We also find that the impact of initial pulse chirp on output spectral width is negligible, indicating SSFS-based spectral-compression method is efficient for both chirped pulses and transform-limited pulses.

Abstract:Optical pulses generated from gain-switched MQW-DFB semiconductor laser with repetition rate of 2.5 GHz are firstly compressed from 53.8 ps to 12 ps using dispersion compensation fiber. Then, the 12 ps pulses are compressed to 2.5 ps using soliton-effect compression in dispersion-shifted fiber. Finally, the pulses of 2.5 ps are compressed to 0.83 ps in dispersion-decreasing fiber.

Abstract:Mode-locked Yb-doped fiber lasers around 1 μm are attractive for high power applications and low noise pulse train generation. Mode-locked fiber lasers working in soliton and stretched-pulse regime outperform others in terms of the laser noise characteristics, mechanical stability and easy maintenance. However, conventional optical fibers always show a normal group velocity dispersion around 1 μm, leading to the inconvenience for necessary dispersion management. Here we show that optical microfibers having a large anomalous dispersion around 1 μm can be integrated into mode-locked Yb-doped fiber lasers with ultralow insertion loss down to −0.06 dB, enabling convenient dispersion management of the laser cavity. Besides, optical microfibers could also be adopted to spectrally broaden and to dechirp the ultrashort pulses outside the laser cavity, giving rise to a pulse duration of about 110 fs. We believe that this demonstration may facilitate all-fiber format high-performance ultrashort pulse generation at 1 μm and may find applications in precision measurements, large-scale facility synchronization and evanescent-field-based optical sensing.
Femtosecond Pulse Trains through Dual-Pumping of Optical Fibers: Role of Third-Order Dispersion

Abstract:Generation of high-repetition-rate, femtosecond, soliton pulse trains through dual-wavelength pumping of a dispersion-decreasing fiber is studied numerically. The achievable shortest pulse width is found to be limited by third-order dispersion that has a significant effect on the pulse-compression dynamics. The output wavelength is red shifted because of intrapulse Raman scattering and depends heavily on third-order dispersion, whose positive values lead to the most red shifted solitons (>25% of the input pump center wavelength). The proposed scheme allows the generation of ultrashort pulse trains at tunable high repetition rates with a wide range of output wavelengths and pulse durations through dispersion engineering. The resulting frequency combs extend over a wide bandwidth with a tunable spacing between the comb lines.

Abstract:Soliton self-frequency shift (SSFS) is a nonlinear effect that generates wavelength-shifted laser pulses in optical fibers. Based on SSFS, we report the generation of ultrashort pulses emitting at 1.7-mu m band in a common dispersion shifted fiber (DSF) pumped by an ultrafast Er-doped fiber laser. Through optimizing the DSF length, sub-200 fs pulses in the range from 1.70 to 1.74 mu m have been achieved with >76% conversion efficiency. The maximum output power is 26.8 mW and the single pulse energy is up to 0.7 nJ. Numerically, simulations have been carried out to map the SSFS pulse evolution in DSF. The simulation results are in a good agreement with the experiment results, giving the feasibility of this method. (C) 2017 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE)

Abstract:A long-term stable picosecond dissipative soliton (DS) is achieved for the first time using nonlinear polarization evolution. The environmental stabilization is performed by a Faraday mirror, which can cancel environmentally induced changes in the birefringence of the fiber. The laser cavity with all-polarization-maintaining fiber components generates DS pulses with 2.9 nJ single pulse energy and 5.9 ps pulse width. The output power test over 2 hours shows the excellent mode-locking stability of this design.

Abstract:Widely wavelength tunable soliton self-frequency shift (SSFS) from 1.58 μm to 2.07 μm was experimentally demonstrated in a highly nonlinear fiber pumped with a mode-locked sub-100 fs Er-doped fiber laser. The maximum output spectrum (full width at half maximum, FWHM) around 2 μm is 143 nm. Although the pulse width of SSFS was measured to be a few picoseconds, the large FWHM bandwidth of SSFS spectrum shows that soliton with sub-50 fs could be achieved if the giant chirped pulse is efficiently re-compressed to be transforms limited. Dispersive wave with a minimum pulse width of 50 fs was also observed.

Abstract:This paper is a study on the generation of high speed ultra-short pulse series by using 10GHz DFB gain-switch semiconductor laser. An analysis about the compression property of optic pulse in dispersion decreasing fiber is presented through solving of nonlinear Schrodinger equation by means of numeric method. The output optical pulse of LiNO3 electronic optical modulator that has a frequency of twice that of the electrical driving signal can be compressed in dispersion decreasing fiber. Furthermore, the best way of substitute of dispersion decreasing fiber with comb-like dispersion fiber is now available.

Abstract:A soliton self-frequency shift (SSFS) of about 140 nm in a highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF) has been demonstrated with 1560 nm pulses generated by a passively mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser. The mode-locked fiber laser was achieved using the nonlinear polarization rotation technique, producing 300 fs pulses with a repetition rate of 13.7 MHz at a wavelength of 1560 nm. The HNLF used has a length of 1010 m. The wavelengths of the resulting femtosecond solitons can be tuned from 1560 nm to 1700 nm by adjusting the input laser power ranging from 0.15 mW to 0.8 mW. Ultrashort pulse propagation in HNLF was simulated by numerical solving the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation, and the soliton self-frequency shifts were obtained for different input powers, which are compared with experimental results. The results show that the SSFS in HNLF has potential applications in practical tunable femtosecond pulse sources and all-optical analog-to-digital conversion.

Abstract:Abstract We experimentally investigated the soliton collisions between soliton molecules and deuterogenic solitons spontaneously generated on the continuous wave (cw) noise background in an ultrafast erbium-doped fiber laser mode locked with MoS2 saturable absorber (SA). The dynamics of the soliton collisions were observed using the time-stretch dispersion Fourier transform technique. The noise-induced deuterogenic solitons first undergo spectral broadening and wavelength shifting, then collide successively with a soliton molecule and eventually vanish. Within the simple collision framework, the spectral-temporal dynamics of soliton collision would help to unveil the self-stabilization mechanism of the soliton molecules in consideration of dispersive wave shedding. This nonlinear dynamics is similar to the soliton rain, except that complex condensed soliton phase is substituted with a soliton molecule.

Abstract:The propagation characteristics of optical pulses in various dispersion fibers were analyzed by numerically solving the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The optical pulse compression factor and compressed pulse quality in different dispersion decreasing fibers were compared. The compression factor of the pulses in comb-like dispersion fiber instead of dispersion decreasing fiber was calculated. To optimize the picosecond optical pulse compression, a novel method of combining high order soliton pulse compression and dispersion decreasing fiber compression was proposed.

Abstract:Dissipative soliton (DS) is demonstrated in a large anomalous dispersion ytterbium-doped fiber laser. A chirped fiber Bragg grating is implemented into a figure-of-9 cavity to provide a large anomalous dispersion. A self-starting and stable DS operation is achieved with 3.5 nJ pulse energy and 12.9 ps pulse duration under a 26.4 MHz repetition rate. Numerical simulations reveal that the DSs presented here experience strong temporal, spectral, and chirp breathing in the cavity. Thanks to the characteristic chirp breathing, the output DS pulses can maintain a narrow spectral bandwidth of 0.17 nm. We believe that the laser design presented here has a lot of potential and could be an outstanding ultrafast seed laser solution for industrial applications including micromachining and hard-brittle material processing.

Abstract:Femtosecond pulse propagation at lambda = 802 nm; in microstructured fiber (MF) with zero-dispersion wavelength at 780 nm is studied experimentally and numerically. The temporal and spectral distributions of the femtosecond pulse in MF are demonstrated by using a grating-eliminated no-nonsense observation of ultrafast incident laser light e-fields technique. Soliton fission is directly observed in the experimental results. The simulation of soliton evolution with the propagation distance in time and frequency domain is conducted.
