Abstract:In this paper the research of the real-time three-dimensional holographic imaging system which uses liquid crystal panels to display the computer generated Fresnel holograms for reconstructed 3D images is described. The reconstructed effects are related to each step of the process and the characteristics of the devices. The contradictions between the quantization of holographic numerical data and the properties of the display device are the important reasons for the reconstruction errors. A new algorithm for calculating point holograms is proposed for reducing the reconstruction errors. Finally the original experimental result is given.

Abstract:A new algorithm for calculating computer-generated holograms (CGH's) is proposed. The hologram fringe pattern data is stored in the computer image format, and transmitted to a transmission-type liquid crystal panel by the video signal. It will be used for the real-time three-dimension imaging by holographic reconstruction. Questions of the effect of the solution, the contrast ratio of the liquid crystal panel and the modulation due to the gray-level of the hologram image are addressed. Therefore the distribution of the amplitude and phase on the holographic plane is determinated by confirming image plane distribution considering the above effects. The reconstructed data is made as similar as possible to the source data by the optimal code. Experimental results,and value the quality of the reconstructed image are given.
Computer-Generated Holograms For 3d Objects Using The Fresnel Zone Plate

Abstract:A new fast algorithm using the "host" Fresnel zone plate was proposed to improve the computational efficiency of computer-generated hologram (CGH) for 3D objects. By reading.3DS files, the spatial position information of each point of the 3D object was obtained directly. With the illumination of plane wave, the "host" Fresnel zone plate of a single point could be equal to all points located in the same depth plane - as the Fresnel zone plate was translated and superimposed along the horizontal and vertical axes. Consequently, the hologram of a 3D object could be built up by superimposing different Fresnel zone plates in the corresponding depth planes. For a digital object composed of 1060 points, it cost about 83s to generate a hologram of 1024*768 pixels. The CGH of 3D objects with the results of the reconstruction was presented in this paper, which proved the feasibility of this algorithm.

Abstract:A numerical method for producing Fresnel computer generated hologram(CGH) of a 3D image using master Fresnel zone according to holographic theory is described in this paper. By reading 3DS files, the information of spatial position of various point on the surface of the three-dimentional object can be obtained directly. According to calculated Fresnel pattern from simulating physical hologram, the Fresnel zones that compose the points of three-dimentional object was superimposed. Consequently, the hologram of the three-dimentional object can be obtained. Compared to traditional holographic computation, this algorithm improves computational efficiency greatly using addition instead of exponent and multiply operation, and has the advantages of information continuum and no redundant data. To a digital object composed of 1060 points, it takes about 83s to generate a hologram of 1024×768 pixles.

Abstract:We present a simple yet effective method to realize holographic three-dimensional (3D) display by optimizing arrangement of holograms. After a 3D object is divided into a set of layers in axial direction, these layers are calculated into corresponding sub-holograms by Fraunhofer diffraction. The hologram uploaded on SLM consists of sub-holograms side-by-side. Both simulations and experiments are carried out to verify the feasibility of the proposed method. The difference between Fresnel diffraction and Fraunhofer diffraction in the proposed method is analyzed. Aiming at the problems exposed in the experiments, reconstructed results are discussed and further improved by optimizing arrangement of sub-holograms. The process of 3D modeling is simple and the computational complexity is accordingly reduced. This method may provide a promising solution in future holographic 3D realization.

Abstract:Holographic display has attracted considerable attention for its high-contrast, low power consumption, wide color gamut and potentials for three-dimensional (3D) display. Although computer-generated hologram (CGH) has the potential for reconstructing all the 3D information of an object, complicated 3D modeling and time-consuming computation are big challenges faced by current 3D holographic display. A simple yet effective method to realize holographic 3D display by shifted Fraunhofer diffraction has been presented in this paper. After a 3D object is divided into a set of layers in axial direction, these layers are calculated into corresponding sub-holograms by Fraunhofer diffraction. The hologram uploaded on SLM consists of sub-holograms in a tiling approach. Both simulations and experiments are carried out to verify the feasibility of shifted Fraunhofer diffraction. Detailed analysis of computational cost has also been carried out, and the comparison between shifted Fresnel diffraction and shifted Fraunhofer diffraction in the proposed method has been analyzed. The Analysis results shows that the process of 3D modeling is simple, that is the computational complexity is accordingly reduced compared with shifted Fraunhofer diffraction. The experimental results demonstrate that our method can reconstruct multi-plane 3D object with continuous depth map. It is expected that the proposed method may provide a better solution in future holographic 3D display research.

Abstract:We present two simple yet effective methods to realize holographic three-dimensional (3D) display by partitioned Fresnel diffraction (PFreD) and partitioned Fraunhofer diffraction (PFraD). After a 3D object is divided into a set of layers in axial direction, these layers are calculated into corresponding sub-holograms. These two methods are used to develop a tiling approach to hologram construction and reconstruction. Both simulations and experiments are carried out to verify the feasibility of the proposed methods. The similarities and differences between PFreD and PFraD are analyzed in details for better understanding. These two methods may provide promising solutions in future holographic 3D realization with their own characteristics and scope of application.

Abstract:The reconstruction quality of computer-generated holographic display is subject to distortions, which are caused by manufacture defects and misalignments of optical elements. Distortion correction based on precision optics is costly and time-consuming. In this paper, a numerical distortion-correction method based on the angular spectrum algorithm is proposed. A wavefront acquisition system using a camera and the four-step phase-shifting algorithm is employed for calculating the distorted distributions. A wavefront correction system using the spatial light modulator is developed for eliminating distorted distributions. Effective distance, calculation time and iterations, and limitations of the method are discussed. The proposed method is robust in reducing distortions in computer-generated holographic display.

Abstract:Augmented reality (AR) technology has been applied in various areas, such as large-scale manufacturing, national defense, healthcare, movie and mass media and so on. An important way to realize AR display is using computer-generated hologram (CGH), which is accompanied by low image quality and heavy computing defects. Meanwhile, the diffraction of Liquid Crystal on Silicon (LCoS) has a negative effect on image quality. In this paper, a modified algorithm based on traditional Gerchberg-Saxton (GS) algorithm was proposed to improve the image quality, and new method to establish experimental system was used to broaden field of view (FOV). In the experiment, undesired zero-order diffracted light was eliminated and high definition 2D image was acquired with FOV broadened to 36.1 degree. We have also done some pilot research in 3D reconstruction with tomography algorithm based on Fresnel diffraction. With the same experimental system, experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of 3D reconstruction. These modifications are effective and efficient, and may provide a better solution in AR realization.

Abstract:In this paper. a method is proposed to implement noises reduced three-dimensional (3D) holographic near-eye display by phase-only computer-generated hologram (CGH). The CGH is calculated from a double-convergence light Gerchberg-Saxton (GS) algorithm, in which the phases of two virtual convergence lights are introduced into GS algorithm simultaneously. The first phase of convergence light is a replacement of random phase as the iterative initial value and the second phase of convergence light will modulate the phase distribution calculated by GS algorithm. Both simulations and experiments are carried out to verify the feasibility of the proposed method. The results indicate that this method can effectively reduce the noises in the reconstruction. Field of view (FOV) of the reconstructed image reaches 40 degrees and experimental light path in the 4-f system is shortened. As for 3D experiments, the results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can present 3D images with 180cm zooming range and continuous depth cues. Abstract:Depth cues and full-parallax are crucial issues in the calculation of computer-generated holograms (CGHs) for perfect holographic three-dimensional (3-D) display. In order to accelerate the speed of generating CGHs and improve the display quality, three layer-oriented methods are investigated in this paper. The first method is based on angular-spectrum, which can provide accurate depth cues. The second method is based on inverse Fresnel diffraction layered holographic stereogram to provide accurate depth information as well as correct occlusion effect. The third method is proposed to generate zoomable 3-D CGHs using layer-based shifted Fresnel diffraction. Numerical simulations and optical experiments have demonstrated that the proposed methods can reconstruct quality 3-D images.

Abstract:We propose a three-dimensional (3-D) holographic display system which consists of a phase-only spatial light modulator (SLM) and a modified 4-f system. The 3-D scene is generated from OpenGL, and the point source algorithm with anti-aliasing technique is used to generate the Fresnel hologram. A modified 4-f system is proposed to produce distortion-free magnification of the 3-D image and eliminate the zero-order interruption of the 3-D holographic imaging system. This method can make efficient utilization of the space-bandwidth product of the SLM, which promises the image quality and keeps the 3-D imaging zone unchanged. Numerical simulations and optical experiments are performed, and the results show that our proposed method can reconstruct enlarged 3-D optical image with correct magnification factor and low image noise. Abstract:Current computer generated holography (CGH) display often suffers from an inevitable problem that the quality of the reconstructed images is often declined by distortions. Improving reconstruction quality by optimizing optical elements used in CGH display is costly and time-consuming. In this work, a numerical correction method of image distortion for CGH display is proposed. CGHs of designed testing charts are employed for pre-calibration. A camera-based wavefront acquisition system is employed for sensing the distorted reconstruction wavefront. An automatic pre-calibration algorithm is developed to reduce the distortion. Root mean square error of the reconstructed images after calibration could be dramatically reduced by the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:Holographic three-dimensional (3D) displays can reconstruct a whole wavefront of a 3D scene and provide rich depth information for the human eyes. Computer-generated holographic techniques offer an efficient way for reconstructing holograms without complicated interference recording systems. In this work, we present a technique for generating 3D computer-generated holograms (CGHs) with scalable samplings, by using layer-based diffraction calculations. The 3D scene is partitioned into multiple layers according to its depth image. Shifted Fresnel diffraction is used for calculating the wave diffractions from the partitioned layers to the CGH plane with adjustable sampling rates, while maintaining the depth information. The algorithm provides an effective method for scaling 3D CGHs without an optical zoom module in the holographic display system. Experiments have been performed, demonstrating that the proposed method can reconstruct quality 3D images at different scale factors.

Abstract:We propose an efficient algorithm using layered holographic stereogram for three-dimensional (3D) computer-generated holograms. The hologram is spatially partitioned into multiple holographic elements (hogels) to provide the occlusion effect and motion parallax by use of multiple viewpoint rendering. Each hogel is calculated with inverse Fresnel diffraction by slicing the viewing frustum according to the depth image. The sliced layers can provide accurate depth cues for reconstruction since the geometric information of the 3D scene is faithfully matched. The algorithm is compatible with computer graphics rendering techniques and robust for holograms with different parameters. When the hogel size equals 1 mm, the signal-to-noise ratio of the diffraction calculation is above 39 dB with a propagation distance longer than 10 mm. Numerical simulations and optical experiments have demonstrated that the proposed method can reconstruct quality 3D images with reduced computational load. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Digital in-line holographic microscopy (DIHM) has attracted attention because of its simple but powerful three-dimensional (3D) imaging capability. To improve the spatial resolution, 3D image reconstruction algorithms use numerical magnification, which generates distortions in the generated images. We propose a method to overcome this problem by using the simple relation between the object and image positions in 3D space. Several holograms were taken while translating a resolution target at different axial positions by a motorized stage. We demonstrated the effectiveness of our method by reconstructing the 3D positions of 3-μm-diameter polymer beads on a tilted slide glass from a single measured hologram.

Shifted Fresnel diffraction is implemented in calculating the propagations from different layers to the hologram plane with adjustable sampling rates. The proposed method provides an efficient way for zooming 3-D CGHs without optical zoom module. Optical experiments have been performed, which demonstrate the proposed method can reconstruct quality 3-D images with different scale factors.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a convolutional symmetric compressed look-up-table (CSC-LUT) method to accelerate computer-generated hologram (CGH) computation based on the Fresnel diffraction theory and LUT. The proposed method can achieve one-time high-quality fast generation of color holograms by utilizing dynamic convolution operation, which is divided three processes. Firstly, the pre-calculated data of maximum horizontal modulation factor is compressed in 1D array by coordinate symmetry. Then, the test object is resampled to satisfy convolutional translation invariance. Finally, the dynamic convolution operation is used to simplify CGH computation process rather than the point-by-point computation. Numerical simulation and optical experimental results show that our proposed method can achieve faster computation speed, higher reconstruction quality and wider application compared to conventional SC-LUT method. The further optimization method for parallel acceleration on the GPU framework can achieve real-time (>24fps) color holographic display corresponding to three perspectives of a 3D scene.

Abstract:Fast calculation and correct depth cue are crucial issues in the calculation of computer-generated hologram (CGH) for high quality three-dimensional (3-D) display. An angular-spectrum based algorithm for layer-oriented CGH is proposed. Angular spectra from each layer are synthesized as a layer-corresponded sub-hologram based on the fast Fourier transform without paraxial approximation. The proposed method can avoid the huge computational cost of the point-oriented method and yield accurate predictions of the whole diffracted field compared with other layer-oriented methods. CGHs of versatile formats of 3-D digital scenes, including computed tomography and 3-D digital models, are demonstrated with precise depth performance and advanced image quality.
