Abstract:High-speed railways are widely developed worldwide; hence, the operational speed of transport systems must be increased. However, the dynamic stress and displacement of embankments are significantly amplified when trains reach the critical speed, thereby decreasing driving safety. Furthermore, the soil strain increases when trains move at a high speed, and soil stiffness nonlinear degradation reduces the critical speed, restricting the enhancement of the train speed. Therefore, the critical speed should be investigated considering the soil nonlinear properties. This study developed a train-track–ground coupling model based on a two-and-a-half-dimensional (2.5D) finite element method and combined it with the soil nonlinear model. Then, we analyze the influence of embankment and foundation conditions on the system critical speed of ballasted and ballastless tracks. The results indicate that soil stiffness degradation is mostly in the embankment, and the ballasted track is more affected by soil nonlinearity than the ballastless track. Additionally, the height and stiffness of the subgrade have a great impact on the critical speed. In the homogenous foundation, the critical speed of the track–ground system is close to the soil Rayleigh wave velocity, whereas the critical speed is more influenced by the track structure in the layered foundation. We further discuss the relationship among the critical speed of the track–ground system, the Rayleigh wave velocity on the ground surface, and the track critical velocity. Finally, the applicability of simplified models for the critical speed is investigated. The results of this study provide guidelines for the train speed elevation and operation safety of ballasted and ballastless tracks.
