Abstract:Nanofluids have received increasing attention in research and development in the area of renewable and sustainable energy systems. The addition of a small amount of high thermal conductivity solid nanoparticles could improve the thermophysical properties of a base fluid and lead to heat transfer augmentation. Various enhancement mechanisms and flow conditions result in nonlinear effects on the thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid flow, and thermo-optical performance of nanofluids. A large amount of research data have been reported in the literature, yet some contradictory results exist. Many affecting factors as well as the nonlinearity and refutations make nanofluid research very complicated and impede its potentially practical applications. Nonetheless, machine learning methods would be essentially useful in nanofluid research concerning the prediction of thermophysical properties, the evaluation of thermo-hydrodynamic performance, and the radiative-optical performance applied to heat exchangers and solar energy systems. The present review aims at revealing the recent trends of machine learning research in nanofluids and scrutinizing the features and applicability of various machine learning methods. The potentials and challenges of machine learning approaches for nanofluid heat transfer research in renewable and sustainable energy systems are discussed. According to the Web of Science database, about 3% of nanofluid research papers published in 2019 involved in machine learning and such a tendency is increasing.

Abstract:The research on the flow and heat transfer characteristics of lead bismuth(LBE) is significant for the thermal-hydraulic calculation, safety analysis and practical application of lead-based fast reactors(LFR). In this paper, a new CFD model is proposed to solve the thermal-hydraulic analysis of LBE. The model includes two parts: turbulent model and turbulent Prandtl, which are the important factors for LBE. In order to find the best model, the experiment data and design of 19-pin hexagonal rod bundle with spacer grid, undertaken at the Karlsruhe Liquid Metal Laboratory (KALLA) are used for CFD calculation. Furthermore, the turbulent model includes SST k - u and k - ??; the turbulent Prandtl includes Cheng-Tak and constant (Prt =1.5,2.0,2.5,3.0). Among them, the combination between SST k - u and Cheng-Tak is more suitable for the experiment. But in the low Pe region, the deviation between the experiment data and CFD result is too much. The reason may be the inlet-effect and when Pe is in a low level, the number of molecular thermal diffusion occupies an absolute advantage, and the buoyancy will enhance. In order to test and verify versatility of the model, the NCCL performed by the Nuclear Thermal-hydraulic Laboratory (Nuthel) of Xi'an Jiao tong University is used for CFD to calculate. Abstract:The aim of this paper is to present a thorough investigation into the impact of an external magnetic field on the flow and thermal properties of nanofluid within a vertically oriented square duct exposed to sunlight-induced heating. The duct incorporates two rectangular fins attached to one set of adjacent walls, receiving uniform sunlight intensity. In contrast, the other two walls feature a thin lubricant film which causes the fluid slip rather than adhesion. Assuming hydrodynamically and thermally developed laminar flow, the study employs a specific thermal boundary condition, enforcing a constant heat flux per unit axial length and a uniform peripheral temperature at the sun-exposed duct walls. Considering the balance between computational efficiency and solution accuracy, the finite volume method is employed to solve the governing partial differential equations. It has been observed that the magnetic parameter induces magnetic damping, resulting in a reduction in velocity distribution and qualitative alterations in flow patterns within the duct due to the heightened impact of the applied magnetic field. The presence of taller fins acts as significant obstacles which divert the flow and cause additional frictional losses, resulting in an overall reduction in flow speed. Elevated Rayleigh numbers amplify natural convection currents, producing a more pronounced change in velocity distribution while qualitatively transforming the thermal signature within the duct. Further, the slip parameter increases the overall velocity distribution while exerting a minimal impact on the thermal distribution, due to a reduction in resistance along the walls with lubrication, facilitating smoother fluid motion and leading to a more widespread velocity profile throughout the duct. Finally, to bring a contemporary perspective to the research methodology, modern techniques such as machine learning were integrated. The widely adopted Neural Fitting app was employed to enhance the precision of the analysis.

Abstract:Purpose Scientists have been conducting trials to find ways to reduce fuel consumption and enhance heat transfer rates to make heating systems more efficient and cheaper. Adding solid nanoparticles to conventional liquids may greatly improve their thermal conductivity, according to the available evidence. This study aims to examine the influence of external magnetic flux on the flow of a mixed convective Maxwell hybrid non-Newtonian nanofluid over a linearly extending porous flat plate. The investigation considers the effects of thermal radiation, Dufour and Soret. Design/methodology/approach The mathematical model is formulated based on the fundamental assumptions of mass, energy and momentum conservation. The implicit models are epitomized by a set of interconnected nonlinear partial differential equations, which include a suitable and comparable adjustment. The numerical solution to these equations is assessed for approximate convergence by the Runge−Kutta−Fehlberg method based on the shooting technique embedded with the MATLAB software. Findings The findings are presented through graphical representations, offering a visual exploration of the effects of various dynamic parameters on the flow field. These parameters encompass a wide range of factors, including radiation, thermal and Brownian diffusion parameters, Eckert, Lewis and Soret numbers, magnetic parameters, Maxwell fluid parameters, Darcy numbers, thermal and solutal buoyancy factors, Dufour and Prandtl numbers. Notably, the authors observed that nanoparticles with a spherical shape exerted a significant influence on the stream function, highlighting the importance of nanoparticle geometry in fluid dynamics. Furthermore, the analysis revealed that temperature profiles of nanomaterials were notably affected by their shape factor, while concentration profiles exhibited an opposite trend, providing valuable insights into the behavior of nanofluids in porous media. Originality/value A distinctive aspect of the research lies in its novel exploration of the impact of external magnetic flux on the flow of a mixed convective Maxwell hybrid non-Newtonian nanofluid over a linearly extending porous flat plate. By considering variables such as solar radiation, external magnetic flux, thermal and Brownian diffusion parameters and nanoparticle shape factor, the authors ventured into uncharted territory within the realm of fluid dynamics. These variables, despite their significant relevance, have not been extensively studied in previous research, thus underscoring the originality and value of the authors' contribution to the field.

Abstract:The theme of this work is to investigate the heat transfer assessment of three-dimensional flow of magnetized Casson hybrid nanofluid through a rotating permeable Riga plate using Darcy–Forchheimer model. The comparative analysis between thermal conductivity model of Hamilton-Crosses, Xue and Yamada-Ota model is also presented. The hybrid nanofluid is the combination of nanoparticles single-walled carbon nanotubes and multi-walled carbon nanotubes which are suspended in base fluid sodium alginate. The flow and heat transfer behavior of working fluid are influenced by the slip velocity, convective heating, viscous dissipation. The solution of existing nonlinear partial differential equations of three-dimensional flow of Casson hybrid nanofluid is obtained by employing the bvp4c command of MATLAB. For the validation of our code and numerical results, a comparison is made with existing results. From the numerical outcomes, it is observed that increasing axial slip parameter, the thermal boundary layer decreases which reveal that the thermal conductivity model of Yamada-Ota hybrid nanofluid is superior to that of Hamilton Crosser and Xue model. Moreover, Hybrid nanofluids also show an improvement in the axial and transverse velocity components as the magnitude of buoyancy parameter and Hartmann number increase. These findings may provide the valuable insights for the fields of geothermal engineering, energy conservation, and nuclear waste disposal.

Abstract:High-throughput computational and experimental design of materials aided by machine learning have become an increasingly important field in material science. This area of research has emerged in leaps and bounds in the thermal sciences, in part due to the advances in computational and experimental methods in obtaining thermal properties of materials. In this paper, we provide a current overview of some of the recent work and highlight the challenges and opportunities that are ahead of us in this field. In particular, we focus on the use of machine learning and high-throughput methods for screening of thermal conductivity for compounds, composites and alloys as well as interfacial thermal conductance. These new tools have brought about a feedback mechanism for understanding new correlations and identifying new descriptors, speeding up the discovery of novel thermal functional materials.

Abstract:Nanofluids have gained significant popularity in the field of sustainable and renewable energy systems. The heat transfer capacity of the working fluid has a huge impact on the efficiency of the renewable energy system. The addition of a small amount of high thermal conductivity solid nanoparticles to a base fluid improves heat transfer. Even though a large amount of research data is available in the literature, some results are contradictory. Many influencing factors, as well as nonlinearity and refutations, make nanofluid research highly challenging and obstruct its potentially valuable uses. On the other hand, data-driven machine learning techniques would be very useful in nanofluid research for forecasting thermophysical features and heat transfer rate, identifying the most influential factors, and assessing the efficiencies of different renewable energy systems. The primary aim of this review study is to look at the features and applications of different machine learning techniques employed in the nanofluid-based renewable energy system, as well as to reveal new developments in machine learning research. A variety of modern machine learning algorithms for nanofluid-based heat transfer studies in renewable and sustainable energy systems are examined, along with their advantages and disadvantages. Artificial neural networks-based model prediction using contemporary commercial software is simple to develop and the most popular. The prognostic capacity may be further improved by combining a marine predator algorithm, genetic algorithm, swarm intelligence optimization, and other intelligent optimization approaches. In addition to the well-known neural networks and fuzzy- and gene-based machine learning techniques, newer ensemble machine learning techniques such as Boosted regression techniques, K-means, K-nearest neighbor (KNN), CatBoost, and XGBoost are gaining popularity due to their improved architectures and adaptabilities to diverse data types. The regularly used neural networks and fuzzy-based algorithms are mostly black-box methods, with the user having little or no understanding of how they function. This is the reason for concern, and ethical artificial intelligence is required.

Abstract:For the processes of gas-solid two phase heat transfer and fluid flow in pebble beds,a numerical porous media model was proposed by taking Forchheimer resistance and porosity distribution into consideration.The results reveal that average heat transfer coefficient Nuavg increases significantly at higher Rayleigh number (Ra)with a given Darcy number (Da).Effective thermal conductivity is an important parameter for pebble beds,the modified ZBS model is in good agreement with experimental data. At normal operating conditions (about 900 ℃) for high temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR),radiation heat transfer plays a domain role.With an increase of heating power and a decrease of gas pressure,lower heat transfer intensity for gas flow will be performed in pebble beds.

Abstract:Utilizing nanostructured materials to optimize thermal processes for renewable energy is an important strategy that has been applied in numerous engineering disciplines for diverse interventions such as photovoltaic thermal systems. Ternary nanofluids have demonstrated potential for improving the cooling capabilities of this kind of system. The current research focuses on enhancing the thermal performance of convective flow of a water-based trihybrid nanofluid across a Riga plate incorporating carbon nanotubes in spherical, graphene in cylindrical and Al 2 O 3 in platelet shapes. Several mechanisms like non-linear heat production, thermal radiation, velocity and thermal slip conditions have all been investigated regarding the flow describing equations. Due to the high complexity of the problem modeling and numerical methods, conventional techniques to the parametric work that incorporate various model factors can fail to derive accurate solutions. This study assesses the ability of soft computing techniques to determine the behavior of a problem with various connected parameters to resolve this issue. With help from numerical scheme Lobatto IIIa technique reference data, the artificial neural network is trained. Furthermore, a constructive technique using artificial neural networks (Levenberg–Marquardt) is used to quantitatively determine the rate of heat transmission on the surface of Riga plates. With the use of correlation, fitting analysis, regression, mean squared error, absolute error, and error histogram, the prediction performance of the proposed algorithms is examined. The Cfx and Nux reach convergence with mean squared errors close to 10−8 and 10−10 after 626 and 100 epochs. The investigation illustrates the benefits of using soft computing methods to accurately investigate the behavior of complex flow models. The most important discovery is that, in comparison to mono- and binary-hybrid nanofluids, ternary hybrid nanofluids have a greater thermal responsiveness.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets, such as graphene and hexagonal boron nitride, are considered as the most promising fillers for enhancing thermal conductivity of polymers and phase-change materials. Nevertheless, the effect of various 2D nanosheets on the effective thermal conductivity of composites is not fully understood, and the corresponding prediction model is still lacking, since numerous influence factors and complex thermal transfer networks are involved. This paper aims to study the macroscopically effective thermal conductivity of the nanosheets-reinforced composites in a systematical way, and develop a robust machine learning based prediction model. To this end, a series of representative volume elements are reconstructed based on the SEM observations of experimental samples, and high-throughput simulations are performed via the updated lattice Boltzmann scheme proposed in our recent work. The effects of shape, size, orientation, intrinsic thermal conductivity, interface resistance, surface coating, and hybrid filling of the 2D nanosheets are clarified. This work could provide a deep insight into the effective thermal conductivity of the nanosheets-reinforced composites, and may offer important guidelines for the custom-design of polymer and phase-change composites with targeted thermal performances.

Abstract:Thermal and flow features of nanofluid are explored under the impact of an external magnetic field whereas fluid is flowing inside a vertical square duct. It is assumed that the sunlight tends to heat up the duct. Two fins are attached to the duct that receive sunlight of uniform intensity. Two walls of the duct contain a fixed temperature and, are exposed to the direct sunlight under the assumption of a particular thermal boundary condition and developed flow. The governing equations of the problem are solved by the finite volume method. The taller fins not only act as significant obstacles causing reduction in flow velocity and frictional losses but also contribute to enhanced the rate of heat transfer more extensively with the surfaces of fins. Higher Rayleigh number fosters buoyancy-driven natural convection, causing a change in the thermal signature and diminution in thermal distribution over the domain. The magnetic force also tends to impede thermal diffusion, thus hampering heat transfer within the flow. The pressure gradient and the nanoparticle volume fraction significantly reduce fRe. On the other hand, the fin height, Rayleigh number and the magnetic parameter cause an enhancement in the Nusselt number and fRe. Finally, introducing a modern perspective into the research approach, machine learning technique (Neural Fitting app) was incorporated to refine the analysis.

Abstract:Recent advances in machine learning (ML) have impacted research communities based on statistical perspectives and uncovered invisibles from conventional standpoints. Though the field is still in the early stage, this progress has driven the thermal science and engineering communities to apply such cutting-edge toolsets for analyzing complex data, unraveling abstruse patterns, and discovering non-intuitive principles. In this work, we present a holistic overview of the applications and future opportunities of ML methods on crucial topics in thermal energy research, from bottom-up materials discovery to top-down system design across atomistic levels to multi-scales. In particular, we focus on a spectrum of impressive ML endeavors investigating the state-of-the-art thermal transport modeling (density functional theory, molecular dynamics, and Boltzmann transport equation), different families of materials (semiconductors, polymers, alloys, and composites), assorted aspects of thermal properties (conductivity, emissivity, stability, and thermoelectricity), and engineering prediction and optimization (devices and systems). We discuss the promises and challenges of current ML approaches and provide perspectives for future directions and new algorithms that could make further impacts on thermal energy research.

Abstract:The low thermal conductivity of phase change materials significantly affects the heat storage and release performance for a phase change energy storage system. To alleviate this issue, a novel triplex-tube latent heat thermal energy storage system is designed and the melting behavior of phase change materials is studied numerically. On the premise of a fixed total volume of phase change material, the multi parameter optimization design of the system is carried out by the response surface method. The fluid structure coupling function of each parameter is fitted. Compared with the original model for the triplex tube, the melting performance of the optimized model is improved by 23.87%. The internal temperature fluctuation is found by dynamic temperature response, and the mechanism is explained by dynamic flow rate study. The improvement of melting performance by natural convection after optimization is also studied. The influences of the physical parameters (fin length, initial temperature of phase change material, inner and outer tube wall temperature, and fin material) of the optimization model on the melting performance of the system are quantified, as well. The effect of fin length (30-3540 mm) on melting performance is found to be less than 11.47% and the effect of thermal conductivity of fin on the melting process is not obvious.(c) 2022 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Thermal stratification phenomena usually occur in the upper plenum after a scram of sodium‐cooled fast reactors, which should be closed concerned in the fields of structural integrity assessment and residual heat removal capacity. A 2‐dimensional analysis program under cylindrical coordinate was developed for predicting the in‐vessel thermal hydraulics. Non‐orthogonal block‐structured grids were generated to resolve the problems with complex structures. A second‐order discrete scheme based on midpoint rule was applied to the spatial discretization of convection and diffusion terms. Two sets of experiments characterized by distinct shapes of their apparatuses were used for the validation, mainly from the viewpoints of vertical temperature distribution and rising behaviors of the stratification interface. Results show that RANS‐type turbulent models make the significant impacts on different flow regimes. In the calculation of a scaled model with plenty of stagnant sodium in the upper region, the realizable k − ε model (RKE) considering the mean deformation rate gives better outcomes than the standard k − ε model (SKE). For the plant‐type upper plenum with considerable flow rate along the entire height, buoyancy modeling is the crucial issue to follow the upward movement of the interface and the relaxation process of the temperature gradient. In this case, employment of the turbulent Prandtl number reflecting the damping effect by incorporating the local Richardson number well reproduced the experimental results.

This study aims to improve the prediction accuracy of heat transfer to LBE in numerical models by developing a solver, named fourParameterFoam, based on the turbulent model SST k-ω and algebraic heat flux model (AHFM) kθ-ɛθ within the OpenFOAM framework. The performance of SGDH models and AHFMs is compared based on heat transfer experiments in vertical tube flow with LBE. The behavior of the turbulent Prandtl number ( Pr t ) under various flow conditions is concluded based on the SST k-ω-kθ-ɛθ model. Additionally, the applicability of the SST k-ω-kθ-ɛθ model in complex flow is validated through heat transfer experiments in a wire-wrapped 19-rod bundle with LBE flow. Local temperature variations on the heated rod surface and sub-channels are analyzed to elucidate the thermal development process in the bundle. The impact of wire spacers on flow behavior is summarized using visualization techniques, and the suitability of corresponding empirical Nusselt number correlations in LBE flow is evaluated.

Abstract:In order to study the heat transfer rule of microreactor in depth, the Bandelet finite element model is established using Bandelet basis function as interpolating function. Firstly, the mathematical model and property of Bandelet transformation are analyzed. Secondly, the heat transfer Bandelet finite element model of microreactor is constructed. Finally, the effectiveness of Bandelet finite element method is verified through comparing analysis between simulation and experimental results, the computing precision and accuracy of heat transfer of microreactor can be improved based on the proposed method. In addition, the relationship between Nusselt number and Reynolds number is analyzed. The inlet velocity has obvious effect on the heat transfer of microreactor. The influence of main geometric sizes concluding height and diameter of micro-pin-fin on heat transfer performance of microreactor is obtained. The analysis results can offer favorable basis for optimization of microreactor and enrich the theoretical system of heat transfer of microreactor. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Predicting Thermal Stress and Failure Risk in Monoblock Divertors Using 2D Finite Difference Modelling and Gradient Boosting Regression for Fusion Energy Applications

Abstract:This study presents a combined approach using a 2D finite difference method and Gradient Boosting Regressor (GBR) to analyze thermal stress and identify potential failure points in monoblock divertors made of tungsten, copper, and CuCrZr alloy. The model simulates temperature and heat flux distributions under typical fusion reactor conditions, highlighting regions of high thermal gradients and stress accumulation. These stress concentrations, particularly at the interfaces between materials, are key areas for potential failure, such as thermal fatigue and microcracking. Using the GBR model, a predictive maintenance framework is developed to assess failure risk based on thermal stress data, allowing for early intervention. This approach provides insights into the thermomechanical behavior of divertors, contributing to the design and maintenance of more resilient fusion reactor components.
