Abstract:The use of inorganic substances as engineering materials is limited due to their distinct synthetic behavior compared with organic polymers. Drawing inspiration from the end-capping method in polymer chemistry, a series of inorganic ionic oligomers, similar to monomers, are prepared for controllable polymerization and crosslinking. This process is called “inorganic ionic polymerization”. Inorganic ionic polymerization achieves “the preparation of inorganic substances in a manner akin to making polymers”. This process creates new ways for the malleable construction of inorganic materials and new engineering materials such as organic-inorganic copolymers, biomimetic organic-inorganic structural materials, and flexible mineral plastics. Inorganic ion polymerization and newly developed engineering materials lead to innovative strategies for the biomimetic regeneration of hard tissues, such as tooth enamel regeneration, biomimetic dentine, and bone remineralization. The proposal of inorganic ion polymerization and crosslinking reaction systems has achieved a breakthrough in the fundamental understanding of inorganic chemistry. It inspires the development of new engineering materials and biomedicine, providing breakthroughs in the interdisciplinary field of medicine and engineering.
