Abstract:Polymeric membranes have been applied in industrial gas separations for decades. Competing technologies, such as cryogenic distillation and sorption processes, require the gases to be either condensed or thermally regenerated from the sorbents. In contrast, membrane gas separation does not involve phase transition, representing the potential for a more energy efficient and eco-friendly separation process. However, the overall energy consumption by membrane gas separation is highly dependent on the quality of the membrane employed for the separation process. With the goal of reducing the energy input needed for creating the transmembrane pressure difference, numerous bulk polymers have been investigated. However, less effort has been devoted to processing polymers into ultrathin membranes and investigating their gas permeation properties, which can be quite different from their bulk counterparts. This review summarizes recent advances in fabricating ultrathin gas-selective polymeric membranes. Several classes of ultrathin polymeric membranes are highlighted: microporous polymers, facilitated transport polymeric membranes, Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films and Layer-by-Layer (LbL) deposited polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEMs), polyamides and other commercial polymers. The application of gas-selective polymeric membranes beyond gas separation is also included as a meaningful extension to this review.
Molecular‐Sieving Membrane by Partitioning the Channels in Ultrafiltration Membrane by in Situ Polymerization

Abstract:Commercial ultrafiltration membranes have proliferated globally for water treatment. However, their pore sizes are too large to sieve gases. Conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) feature well-developed microporosity yet are difficult to be fabricated into membranes. Herein, we report a strategy to prepare molecular-sieving membranes by partitioning the mesoscopic channels in water ultrafiltration membrane (PSU) into ultra-micropores by space-confined polymerization of multi-functionalized rigid building units. Nine CMP@PSU membranes were obtained, and their separation performance for H2 /CO2 , H2 /N2 , and H2 /CH4 pairs surpass the Robeson upper bound and rival against the best of those reported membranes. Furthermore, highly crosslinked skeletons inside the channels result in the structural robustness and transfer into the excellent aging resistance of the CMP@PSU. This strategy may shed light on the design and fabrication of high-performance polymeric gas separation membranes.

Abstract:The separation of ethylene/ethane based on mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) is a promising yet challenging task. In this work, high-performing GeFSIX-3-Ni/6FDA-DAM MMMs consisting of anion-pillared hybrid material GeFSIX-3-Ni (also termed ZU-36-Ni, GeFSIX = hexafluorogermanate, 3 = pyrazine) and 6FDA-DAM were synthesized via a simple in situ method, which surpasses 2013 upper bound for C2H4/C2H6 separation. Further investigations revealed that the interfacial compatibility between GeFSIX-3-Ni and 6FDA-DAM was improved with the enhancement of hydrogen bonds and the regulated small particle size (< 50 nm). Both single-and mixed gas separation experiments confirmed that the separation performance of 10 wt% GEF-PI-S MMMs (GEF = GeFSIX-3-Ni, PI = 6FDA-DAM, S = in situ method) surpassed the C2H4/C2H6 upper bound in terms of C2H4 permeability (131.4 Barrer) and C2H4/C2H6 selectivity (3.80) for equimolar C2H4/C2H6 mixed gas. This work provides insights into more efficient way of obtaining defect-free MMMs with high performances for diversified separations.

Abstract:Hierarchically porous materials containing sub-nm ultramicropores with molecular sieving abilities and microcavities with high gas diffusivity may realize energy-efficient membranes for gas separations. However, rationally designing and constructing such pores into large-area membranes enabling efficient H2 separations remains challenging. Here, we report the synthesis and utilization of hybrid carbon molecular sieve membranes with well-controlled nano- and micro-pores and single zinc atoms and clusters well-dispersed inside the nanopores via the carbonization of supramolecular mixed matrix materials containing amorphous and crystalline zeolitic imidazolate frameworks. Carbonization temperature is used to fine-tune pore sizes, achieving ultrahigh selectivity for H2/CO2 (130), H2/CH4 (2900), H2/N2 (880), and H2/C2H6 (7900) with stability against water vapor and physical aging during a continuous 120-h test.

Abstract:Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) with the performance between the matrix and the filler is a promising strategy for membranes with excellent gas permeability-selectivity. In this study, the hollow polydimethylsiloxane nanoparticles were synthesized and then incorporated with the poly(oxide ethylene) monomer and tri-functional cross-linker to form mixed matrix membranes by in situ polymerization. The hollow nanoparticles formed the independent closed nanocavities in membranes, which enhanced the gas permeability contributed by both the improved diffusivity and solubility. At high loading, the hollow polydimethylsiloxane nanoparticle was converted into the continuous phase with the cross-linked poly(oxide ethylene) as the dispersed phase. Gases preferred to permeate through the connected cluster of hollow polydimethylsiloxane nanoparticles, finally leading to ultrahigh gas permeabilities far going beyond the instinct values of polydimethylsiloxane and the cross-linked poly(oxide ethylene). The optimized membrane with 34 wt% hollow nanoparticles loadings exhibited ultrahigh permeabilities with the values of 44186 Barrer for CO 2 and 11506 Barrer for O 2 , accompanied with a CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of 9.9 and an O 2 /N 2 selectivity of 2.6, which exceeded the 2008 Robeson upper bound for O 2 /N 2 and located at the 2008 Robeson upper bound for CO 2 /N 2 .

Abstract:Hybrid membranes assembled from a polymeric matrix and an inorganic filler are considered one of the most promising membranes for energy-efficient gas separations due to their high performance and low-cost fabrication. Rigid polymer matrices often exhibit lasting porosity and consequently have been gradually employed to fabricate separation membranes of high permeance. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a key class of fillers that have fueled the exploration of advanced hybrid-membrane technologies for gas separation. In this short review, an evolutional pathway for more advanced MOF/polymer hybrid-membrane morphologies and their modules are highlighted along with state-of-the-art applications. Here, we address key issues such as selecting the appropriate MOF filler and polymer matrix, improving filler/matrix compatibility within hybrid membranes, and, most importantly, how to scale up MOF/polymer hybrid membranes efficiently and economically for large-scale industrial applications.

Abstract:Porous graphene and other atomically thin two‐dimensional materials are regarded as highly promising membrane materials for high‐performance gas separations due to their atomic thickness, large‐scale synthesizability, excellent mechanical strength, and chemical stability. When these atomically thin materials contain a high areal density of gas sieving nanoscale pores, they can exhibit both high gas permeances and high selectivities, which is beneficial for reducing the cost of gas separation processes. In this review, we discuss recent modeling and experimental advances in nanoporous atomically thin membranes for gas separations. We also highlight the major challenges involved, including controlling pore size distributions, scaling up the membrane area, and matching theory with experimental results. Optimizing Porosity for Membrane-based Gas Separations

Abstract:Thermally Rearranged (TR) polymer membranes achieve CO2/CH4 separation with a selectivity and permeability that surpasses Robeson's upper bound. A theoretical study, based on free volume morphology, has been undertaken to explain why the TR membranes perform so well, as compared to conventional polymeric membranes. The hour-glass shaped pores are shown to provide a series of size-selective necks connected with larger flux-assisting cavities. With the correct neck and cavity size, the upper bound can be exceeded for many different gas mixtures. In addition, other materials with pore constrictions are investigated, including Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks (ZIFs) where the porosity is highly ordered. Through a Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulation, ZIF-11 is shown to achieve perfect size-sieving of H2 over CO2, CH4, O2 and N2. This morphology should be excellent for preventing pore blockages where the large cavities provide overtaking space and the many available necks provide alternate pathways to avoid the 'plumbing problem'. The conclusions are supported by the literature, conventional transport theory, MD simulations, positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) results.

Abstract:In membrane-based separation, molecular size differences relative to membrane pore sizes govern mass flux and separation efficiency. In applications requiring complex molecular differentiation, such as in natural gas processing, cascaded pore size distributions in membranes allow different permeate molecules to be separated without a reduction in throughput. Here, we report the decoration of microporous polymer membrane surfaces with molecular fluorine. Molecular fluorine penetrates through the microporous interface and reacts with rigid polymeric backbones, resulting in membrane micropores with multimodal pore size distributions. The fluorine acts as angstrom-scale apertures that can be controlled for molecular transport. We achieved a highly effective gas separation performance in several industrially relevant hollow-fibrous modular platform with stable responses over 1 year.

Abstract:Molecular sieving membranes with sufficient and uniform nanochannels that break the permeability-selectivity trade-off are desirable for energy-efficient gas separation, and the arising two-dimensional (2D) materials provide new routes for membrane development. However, for 2D lamellar membranes, disordered interlayer nanochannels for mass transport are usually formed between randomly stacked neighboring nanosheets, which is obstructive for highly efficient separation. Therefore, manufacturing lamellar membranes with highly ordered nanochannel structures for fast and precise molecular sieving is still challenging. Here, we report on lamellar stacked MXene membranes with aligned and regular subnanometer channels, taking advantage of the abundant surface-terminating groups on the MXene nanosheets, which exhibit excellent gas separation performance with H2 permeability >2200 Barrer and H2/CO2 selectivity >160, superior to the state-of-the-art membranes. The results of molecular dynamics simulations quantitatively support the experiments, confirming the subnanometer interlayer spacing between the neighboring MXene nanosheets as molecular sieving channels for gas separation.

Abstract:High-performance membranes exceeding the conventional permeability-selectivity upper bound are attractive for advanced gas separations. In the context microporous polymers have gained increasing attention owing to their exceptional permeability, which, however, demonstrate a moderate selectivity unfavorable for separating similarly sized gas mixtures. Here we report an approach to designing polymeric molecular sieve membranes via multi-covalent-crosslinking of blended bromomethyl polymer of intrinsic microporosity and Tröger's base, enabling simultaneously high permeability and selectivity. Ultra-selective gas separation is achieved via adjusting reaction temperature, reaction time and the oxygen concentration with occurrences of polymer chain scission, rearrangement and thermal oxidative crosslinking reaction. Upon a thermal treatment at 300 °C for 5 h, membranes exhibit an O2/N2, CO2/CH4 and H2/CH4 selectivity as high as 11.1, 154.5 and 813.6, respectively, transcending the state-of-art upper bounds. The design strategy represents a generalizable approach to creating molecular-sieving polymer membranes with enormous potentials for high-performance separation processes.

Abstract:Highly permeable and selective synthetic polymer membranes are attractive for energy-efficient gas separations, while fabricating such membranes with well-defined micropore architecture and interconnectivity remains a significant challenge. We report the design and fabrication of highly crosslinked and microporous polymer nanofilms via engineering the bridged-bicyclic triptycene triamine moieties into the interfacially polymerized networks. The integrated polyamide nanofilms exhibited hierarchical pore structures with finely tuned microporosity (pore size 0.7–1.0 nm), ultramicroporosity (pore size 0.4–0.7 nm), and submicroporosity (pore size < 0.4 nm) and enhanced micropore interconnectivity due to triptycene-induced non-coplanar orientation and configurational free volume in the networks. Consequently, the composite membranes comprising polyamide nanofilms display exceptional gas separation performance for He and H2 recovery with enhanced permeances and selectivities as well as notable plasticization resistance compared to current state-of-the-art highly crosslinked TFC membranes. It is also proved that the microporosity and gas transport properties of the composite nanofilms are highly tailorable by regulating the reaction conditions. Incorporating hierarchical triptycene units with well-defined and interconnected microvoids provides the potential to fabricate highly permselective thin-film composite membranes applicable for various important gas separations.

Abstract:Abstract Membrane-based gas separation exhibits many advantages over other conventional techniques; however, the construction of membranes with simultaneous high selectivity and permeability remains a major challenge. Herein, (LDH/FAS) n -PDMS hybrid membranes, containing two-dimensional sub-nanometre channels were fabricated via self-assembly of unilamellar layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheets and formamidine sulfinic acid (FAS), followed by spray-coating with a poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) layer. A CO 2 transmission rate for (LDH/FAS) 25 -PDMS of 7748 GPU together with CO 2 selectivity factors (SF) for SF(CO 2 /H 2 ), SF(CO 2 /N 2 ) and SF(CO 2 /CH 4 ) mixtures as high as 43, 86 and 62 respectively are observed. The CO 2 permselectivity outperforms most reported systems and is higher than the Robeson or Freeman upper bound limits. These (LDH/FAS) n -PDMS membranes are both thermally and mechanically robust maintaining their highly selective CO 2 separation performance during long-term operational testing. We believe this highly-efficient CO 2 separation performance is based on the synergy of enhanced solubility, diffusivity and chemical affinity for CO 2 in the sub-nanometre channels.

Abstract:Gas separation (GS) and pervaporation (PV) mainly based on solution-diffusion mechanism, are two important processes for the challenging transport and separation of gaseous and vapor molecules. Various types of contemporary nanomaterials such as covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have demonstrated unique channels with tuneable surface that govern transport and separation of targeted molecules. New opportunities have been revealed through incorporation of emerging nanomaterials into the structure of conventional polymeric membranes and resulted in several advantages notably improved performance and reduced energy consumptions. Due to the broad applications of GS and PV processes in the chemical industry and energy sector, the present manuscript aims to review the principle for gas separation and pervaporation in membrane molecular separation process in terms of solution-diffusion theory. In addition, the current status of membranes containing emerging nanomaterials for GS and PV are discussed comprehensively from different aspects. Furthermore, the current applications of nanomaterials incorporated mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) are described. Finally, the perspectives and future directions of remarkable performance membranes incorporated with diverse emerging nanomaterials are explained so as to facilitate the rapid advancement of energetic-efficient membranes toward practically industrial applications.
