Abstract:A novel wearable health monitoring system with multi-parameters and its applications for long term monitoring are presented in this paper. The system provides continuous monitoring of the user's electrocardiogram (ECG), respiratory status and activity, as well as the local temperature. A belt-type data acquisition and communication module worn around the chest includes ECG and respiratory module ADS1292R, six axis motion sensor MPU6050, high precision digital temperature sensor Tsic506 and bluetooth 4.0 module CC2541. The collected data is sent to the mobile device via bluetooth and the mobile device gives a heart health index of measuring the body status which includes heart rate, QRS wave, and ST segment. A remote interactive way is constructed by the mobile device communicating with the customer management center via WIFI.
RF-Heartbeat: Robust and Contactless Heartbeat Monitoring Based on FMCW Radar

Abstract:Heartbeat is a significant vital sign. The past decade has witnessed wireless heartbeat monitoring becoming more and more feasible. As a contactless approach, it can relieve users from wearing sensors. The unique advantages of milimeter-wave frequency-modulated continous-wave (FMCW) radar over other wireless devices draw our attention. However, there are plenty of limitations in related work based on it. Tiny vibration caused by heartbeat could be easily interrupted by body movements (BMs) and so on. Range bin selection methods in existing work are not robust enough. The inter-beat interval (IBI) estimation need to be further improved. We propose RF-Heartbeat, a robust heartbeat monitoring system based on milimeter-wave FMCW radar. RF-Heartbeat has novel signal process modules, including BMs detection method, and optimal range bin selection method, for obtaining a relatively high-quality heartbeat signal. Then, a global optimization model based on a template matching algorithm is implemented for improving IBI estimation accuracy. In the heartbeat monitoring experiment for a total of 72 hours and 56 minutes involving 10 participants, under a time coverage of 91.2%, the median error of IBI was 12 ms. RF-Heartbeat achieves a higher performance than state-of-the-art heartbeat monitoring systems. It has strong robustness to different individuals in different postures and positions. Our work provides effective solutions to some obstacles in practical applications of contactless heartbeat monitoring. It enables accurate and long-term heartbeat monitoring, which has wide applications in clinical space and daily life.

Abstract:This paper presents the design, implementation, and evaluation of MagWear, a novel biomagnetism-based system that can accurately and inclusively monitor the heart rate, respiration rate, and blood pressure of users. MagWear's contributions are twofold. Firstly, we build a mathematical model that characterizes the magnetic coupling effect of blood flow under the influence of an external magnetic field. This model uncovers the variations in accuracy when monitoring vital signs among individuals. Secondly, leveraging insights derived from this mathematical model, we present a software-hardware co-design that effectively handles the impact of human diversity on the performance of vital sign monitoring, pushing this generic solution one big step closer to real adoptions. Following IRB protocols, our extensive experiments involving 30 volunteers demonstrate that MagWear achieves high monitoring accuracy with a mean percentage error (MPE) of 1.55% for heart rate (HR), 1.79% for respiration rate (RR), 3.35% for systolic blood pressure (SBP), and 3.89% for diastolic blood pressure (DBP). MagWear can also be extended to detect anemia and blood oxygen saturation, which is also our ongoing work. Code and hardware schematics can be found at: https://github.com/tanwork/MagWear .

Abstract:Monitoring heart rate (HR) by a single wrist-worn accelerometer would provide many advantages over electrocardiogram (ECG) or photoplethysmography (PPG), such as wearing comfortability, saving power, tiny footprint and automatic motion artifact removal. However, like ECG, accelerometry was mostly implemented on the chest, named seismocardiogram (SCG), and PPG was dominating the wrist worn format. Pulse condition detection in Traditional Chinese Medicine or sphygmography was engineered into a wearable format in this work, and a wrist-worn HR monitor by a single accelerometer was demonstrated. A major limitation of wrist-worn device is that motion artifacts and noise severely corrupt the signal integrity. In this study, with raw data segments including hundreds of random finger or hand motions, several signal decomposition algorithms were compared, such as independent component analysis (ICA), variable mode decomposition (VMD), wavelet synchrosqueezed transform (WSST), and singular spectrum analysis (SSA), and Kalman smoothing was implemented to track HR continuously. Our method was tested on 20 subjects during random finger tapping or hand swinging. Without knowing properties of noise or motion beforehand or requirement of an extra sensor as reference, our method provides a significant removal of motion artifacts and noise from three-dimensional acceleration signals, with 95% of HR estimation within ±8.86 bpm, much longer battery life and better wearing comfort than PPG. It would broaden the working conditions, and thus provide a more holistic assessment of HR during everyday life.

Abstract:Flexible piezoelectret patches are developed to examine audio physiological signals from cardiovascular and respiratory systems, including heart, Korotkoff, and breath sounds. A customized electromagnetic shielding structure is designed for precision and high‐fidelity measurements and several unique physiological sound patterns have been collected and analyzed. This work illustrates a new class of wearable healthcare detection system for potentially advanced diagnostic schemes. Real‐time monitoring of vital sounds from cardiovascular and respiratory systems via wearable devices together with modern data analysis schemes have the potential to reveal a variety of health conditions. Here, a flexible piezoelectret sensing system is developed to examine audio physiological signals in an unobtrusive manner, including heart, Korotkoff, and breath sounds. A customized electromagnetic shielding structure is designed for precision and high‐fidelity measurements and several unique physiological sound patterns related to clinical applications are collected and analyzed. At the left chest location for the heart sounds, the S1 and S2 segments related to cardiac systole and diastole conditions, respectively, are successfully extracted and analyzed with good consistency from those of a commercial medical device. At the upper arm location, recorded Korotkoff sounds are used to characterize the systolic and diastolic blood pressure without a doctor or prior calibration. An Omron blood pressure monitor is used to validate these results. The breath sound detections from the lung/ trachea region are achieved a signal‐to‐noise ration comparable to those of a medical recorder, BIOPAC, with pattern classification capabilities for the diagnosis of viable respiratory diseases. Finally, a 6×6 sensor array is used to record heart sounds at different locations of the chest area simultaneously, including the Aortic, Pulmonic, Erb's point, Tricuspid, and Mitral regions in the form of mixed data resulting from the physiological activities of four heart valves. These signals are then separated by the independent component analysis algorithm and individual heart sound components from specific heart valves can reveal their instantaneous behaviors for the accurate diagnosis of heart diseases. The combination of these demonstrations illustrate a new class of wearable healthcare detection system for potentially advanced diagnostic schemes.

Abstract:Cardiovascular diseases claim over 10 million lives annually, highlighting the critical need for long-term monitoring and early detection of cardiac abnormalities. Existing techniques like electrocardiograms (ECG) and Holter are accurate but suffer from discomfort caused by body-attached electrodes. While wearable devices using photoplethysmography offer more convenience, they sacrifice accuracy and are susceptible to environmental interference. Here we present a radio frequency (RF)-based sensing system that monitors long-term heart rate variability (HRV) with clinical-grade accuracy. For the first time, our system successfully overcomes the orders-larger interference from respiration motion by overturning the conventional signal processing framework. By identifying previously undiscovered frequency ranges where heartbeat information predominates over other motions, we generate prominent heartbeat patterns with harmonics typically considered detrimental. Extensive evaluations, including a large-scale clinical setting involving 7,090 participants and a long-term daily scenario spanning two months, demonstrate that our system can monitor HRV and diagnose abnormalities with comparable performance to clinical-grade ECG-based systems. This RF-based HRV sensing system has the potential to support active self-assessment and revolutionize medical prevention with long-term and precise health monitoring.

Abstract:In recent years, particular attention has been devoted to continuous electrocardiogram (ECG) waveform monitoring due to its numerous applications. However, existing solutions require users to be confined to particular locations, rely on dedicated and expensive hardware, or require active user participation. The constrained recording conditions prevent them from being deployed in many practical application scenarios. In view of this, we present VibCardiogram, a continuous and reliable design for estimating ECG waveform shape via ubiquitous wrist-worn wearables; it renders a personal ECG waveform shape estimating system with prolonged recording time accessible to a larger sector of the population. Instead of adding auxiliary sensors to wearables, VibCardiogram leverages the widely integrated motion sensor to characterize cardiac activities, and interpret them to generate an alternative signal that has the same waveform shape as the ECG signal. Specifically, VibCardiogram extracts the cardiogenic body vibrations from noisy sensor data. As the waveform variability and inconstant period hinder the segmentation of cardiac cycles, VibCardiogram extracts features and realizes accurate segmentation via machine learning. To parse cardiac activities from vibration signals, we build a deep-learning pipeline associating the encoder-decoder framework and Generative Adversarial Networks. With dedicated construction and training, it can estimate the ECG waveform accurately. Experiments with 20 participants show that VibCardiogram can achieve an average estimation error of 5.989% for waveform amplitude estimation, which is within the 10% margins regulated by the American National Standards Institute. Moreover, the promising results further confirm that VibCardiogram effectively extracts Heart Rate Variability features and supports downstream applications.

Abstract:Systolic and diastolic blood pressure estimation using arm-cuff monitors is one of the most common cardiovascular evaluation criteria in healthcare today, however these measures lack critical heartbeat and pressure dynamics. Pulse-transit time can be used as an alternative for arm-cuff monitors, but gives only one parameter for two pressure quantities. Ultrasound, computed tomography scan, and magnetic resonance imaging can retrieve geometrical features of the heart, but cannot directly estimate vascular pressures. Here we show a novel radio-frequency heartbeat sensor based on multi-point near-field observation. By comparing to synchronized electrocardiogram and auscultation, the multi-point sensor can assess motion and pressure in different parts of the heart following the Wiggers diagram. By applying the Hilbert-Huang frequency-time transform, the central blood pressure can be derived from the vascular vibration characteristics as continuous transients, including during the pulmonary cycle which is previously inaccessible from branchial measurements. Our scheme can be further extended to a full multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) channel arrangement, producing rich content for diagnostic and biometric applications. We employ dynamic time warping analyses to illustrate the sensor's wealth of diversified information across different channels and persons. This new multi-point sensor, which can be worn conveniently over clothing, enables unprecedented monitoring capabilities of detailed central blood pressure transients and heartbeat dynamics under the given measurement instructions for at-home and clinical cardiovascular diagnostics.

Abstract:In recent years heart and blood vessel diseases kill more people than everything else combined. The daily test of heart rate for the prevention and treatment of the heart head blood-vessel disease has the vital significance. In order to adapt the transformation of medical model and solve the low accuracy problem of the traditional method of heart rate measuring, we present a new method to monitor heart rate in this paper. The heart rate detection is designed for daily heart rate detection. The heart rate signal is collected by the heart rate sensor. The signal through signal processing circuits converts into sine wave and square wave in turn. And then the signal is transmitted to the computer by data collection card. Finally, we use LABVIEW and MATLAB to show the heart rate wave and calculate the heart rate. By doing contrast experiment with medical heart rate product, experimental results show that the system can realize rapidly and accurately measure the heart rate value. A measurement can be completed within 10 seconds and the error is less than 3beat/min. And the result shows that the method in this paper has a strong anti-interference ability. It can effectively suppress the movement interference. Beyond that the result is insensitive to light.

Abstract:Continuous and reliable monitoring of blood pressure and cardiac function is of great importance for diagnosing and preventing cardiovascular diseases. However, existing cardiovascular monitoring approaches are bulky and costly, limiting their wide applications for early diagnosis. Here, we developed an intelligent blood pressure and cardiac function monitoring system based on a conformal and flexible strain sensor array and deep learning neural networks. The sensor has a variety of advantages, including high sensitivity, high linearity, fast response and recovery, and high isotropy. Experiments and simulation synergistically verified that the sensor array can acquire high-precise and feature-rich pulse waves from the wrist without precise positioning. By combining high-quality pulse waves with a well-trained deep learning model, we can monitor blood pressure and cardiac function parameters. As a proof of concept, we further constructed an intelligent wearable system for real-time and long-term monitoring of blood pressure and cardiac function, which may contribute to personalized health management, precise and early diagnosis, and remote treatment.

Abstract:In recent years, due to increased attention of individual physical health condition, the demand on portable multi-vital signs monitoring devices has shown an explosive growth. This work designed a portable, multi-vital signs monitoring system, consisting of chest unit and wrist unit, with size of 32 mm x 32 mm and diameter of 30 mm, respectively. The designed system is capable of transmitting measured electrocardiograph (ECG), pulse wave and body temperature signal to the mobile devices wirelessly by Bluetooth low energy (BLE) technique. The heart rate, pulse oximetry (SpO(2)) and respiratory rate are extracted through time domain algorithm. The chest and wrist units can continuously monitor body vital signs for more than 12 and 24 hours, respectively. Besides, the experiment results reveal that the chest unit is able to monitor patients with heart rate abnormalities such as atrial fibrillation and premature beats. The typical heart diseases can be detected in real-time. Meanwhile, the wrist unit clearly detects the changes of the physical parameters of the subjects under different physiological conditions. The accuracy of the designed system is consistent with that of the commercial medical instrument counterpart, with further advantages of compact, portable and patient-friendly natures.
A novel machine learning-enabled framework for instantaneous heart rate monitoring from motion-artifact-corrupted electrocardiogram signals

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel machine learning-enabled framework to robustly monitor the instantaneous heart rate (IHR) from wrist-electrocardiography (ECG) signals continuously and heavily corrupted by random motion artifacts in wearable applications. The framework includes two stages, i.e. heartbeat identification and refinement, respectively. In the first stage, an adaptive threshold-based auto-segmentation approach is proposed to select out heartbeat candidates, including the real heartbeats and large amounts of motion-artifact-induced interferential spikes. Then twenty-six features are extracted for each candidate in time, spatial, frequency and statistical domains, and evaluated by a spare support vector machine (SVM) to select out ten critical features which can effectively reveal residual heartbeat information. Afterwards, an SVM model, created on the training data using the selected feature set, is applied to find high confident heartbeats from a large number of candidates in the testing data. In the second stage, the SVM classification results are further refined by two steps: (1) a rule-based classifier with two attributes named 'continuity check' and 'locality check' for outlier (false positives) removal, and (2) a heartbeat interpolation strategy for missing-heartbeat (false negatives) recovery. The framework is evaluated on a wrist-ECG dataset acquired by a semi-customized platform and also a public dataset. When the signal-to-noise ratio is as low as -7 dB, the mean absolute error of the estimated IHR is 1.4 beats per minute (BPM) and the root mean square error is 6.5 BPM. The proposed framework greatly outperforms well-established approaches, demonstrating that it can effectively identify the heartbeats from ECG signals continuously corrupted by intense motion artifacts and robustly estimate the IHR. This study is expected to contribute to robust long-term wearable IHR monitoring for pervasive heart health and fitness management.
Non-contact Real-time Heart Rate Measurements Based on High Speed Circuit Technology Research

Abstract:In recent years, morbidity and mortality of the cardiovascular or cerebrovascular disease, which threaten human health greatly, increased year by year. Heart rate is an important index of these diseases. To address this status, the paper puts forward a kind of simple structure, easy operation, suitable for large populations of daily monitoring non-contact heart rate measurement. In the method we use imaging equipment video sensitive areas. The changes of light intensity reflected through the image grayscale average. The light change is caused by changes in blood volume. We video the people face which include the sensitive areas (ROI), and use high-speed processing circuit to save the video as AVI format into memory. After processing the whole video of a period of time, we draw curve of each color channel with frame number as horizontal axis. Then get heart rate from the curve.We use independent component analysis (ICA) to restrain noise of sports interference, realized the accurate extraction of heart rate signal under the motion state. We design an algorithm, based on high-speed processing circuit, for face recognition and tracking to automatically get face region. We do grayscale average processing to the recognized image, get RGB three grayscale curves, and extract a clearer pulse wave curves through independent component analysis, and then we get the heart rate under the motion state. At last, by means of compare our system with Fingertip Pulse Oximeter, result show the system can realize a more accurate measurement, the error is less than 3 pats per minute.
A Machine Learning-Empowered System for Long-Term Motion-Tolerant Wearable Monitoring of Blood Pressure and Heart Rate with Ear-ECG/PPG

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a fully ear-worn long-term blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR) monitor to achieve a higher wearability. Moreover, to enable practical application scenarios, we present a machine learning framework to deal with severe motion artifacts induced by head movements. We suggest situating all electrocardiogram (ECG) and photoplethysmography (PPG) sensors behind two ears to achieve a super wearability, and successfully acquire weak ear-ECG/PPG signals using a semi-customized platform. After introducing head motions toward real-world application scenarios, we apply a support vector machine classifier to learn and identify raw heartbeats from motion artifacts-impacted signals. Furthermore, we propose an unsupervised learning algorithm to automatically filter out residual distorted/faking heartbeats, for ECG-to-PPG pulse transit time (PTT) and HR estimation. Specifically, we introduce a dynamic time warping-based learning approach to quantify distortion conditions of raw heartbeats referring to a high-quality heartbeat pattern, which are then compared with a threshold to perform purification. The heartbeat pattern and the distortion threshold are learned by a K-medoids clustering approach and a histogram triangle method, respectively. Afterward, we perform a comparative analysis on ten PTT or PTT&HR-based BP learning models. Based on an acquired data set, the BP and HR estimation using the proposed algorithm has an error of -1.4±5.2 mmHg and 0.8±2.7 beats/min, respectively, both much lower than the state-of-the-art approaches. These results demonstrate the capability of the proposed machine learning-empowered system in ear-ECG/PPG acquisition and motion-tolerant BP/HR estimation. This proof-of-concept system is expected to illustrate the feasibility of ear-ECG/PPG-based motion-tolerant BP/HR monitoring.
Accurate Extraction Of Heartbeat Intervals With Near-Field Coherent Sensing

Abstract:Continuous monitoring of vital signs including heart rates, blood pressures, respiration rates and breath efforts is critical for eHealth. Current approaches are limited in accuracy, convenience and sensing capabilities. Some methods such as electrocardiogram (ECG) is difficult for long-term applications due to the requirement of direct skin contact, which is uncomfortable to wearers, restricts body motion and disrupts circadian rhythms. Meanwhile accurate measurement of the inter-heartbeat timing features is important for wellness monitoring and human emotion studies. In this paper, we introduce a new method to modulate the external and internal mechanical motion of the wearer body directly onto multiplexed radio frequency (RF) signals by near-field coherent sensing (NCS). To minimize the deployment and maintenance cost of NCS vital-sign monitoring, passive RF identification (RFID) tags can be integrated into garments at the chest and wrist areas. The unique ID of each tag helps discriminate its signal against interferences from ambient interferences and other tags. NCS utilizes both amplitude and phase of the electromagnetic field to couple the motion, which significantly increases the signal quality in comparison to methods based solely on signal strength. The tag backscattering signal is then processed with spectral equalization to amplify the high frequency components to recover not only the waveform details originally submerged in the low-frequency components but also the sharp peaks for precise heartbeat intervals with improved peak detection certainty. The derived heartbeat interval shows improved stability in comparison with synchronous ECG.

Abstract:According to the statistics of the World Health Organization, an estimated 17.9 million people die from cardiovascular diseases each year, representing 31% of all global deaths. Continuous non-invasive arterial pressure (CNAP) is essential for the management of cardiovascular diseases. However, it is difficult to achieve long-term CNAP monitoring with the daily use of current devices due to irritation of the skin as well as the lack of motion artifacts suppression. Here, we report a high-performance skin-like optoelectronic system integrated with ultra-thin flexible circuits to monitor CNAP. We introduce a theoretical model via the virtual work principle for predicting the precise blood pressure and suppressing motion artifacts, and propose optical difference in the frequency domain for stable optical measurements in terms of skin-like devices. We compare the results with the blood pressure acquired by invasive (intra-arterial) blood pressure monitoring for >1500 min in total on 44 subjects in an intensive care unit. The maximum absolute errors of diastolic and systolic blood pressure were 7/+/- 10 mm Hg, respectively, in immobilized, and +/- 10/+/- 14 mm Hg, respectively, in walking scenarios. These strategies provide advanced blood pressure monitoring techniques, which would directly address an unmet clinical need or daily use for a highly vulnerable population.

Abstract:A new low‐power wrist‐worn miniature device used for real‐time wireless heart rate (HR) monitoring was presented . A novel pulse signal detection method based on double channels of pulse sensing of the radial artery and ulnar artery as well as their differential signal was proposed .A miniature device consisting of sensors ,signal condition system was fabricated .The micro‐controller is responsible for power administration ,and calculation of auto gain control algorithm and heart rate algorithms .The average currents are about 10μA and 300μA in standby and active modes ,respectively .Ten male subjects were selected to test the performance of the device through a three‐hour continuous test in their resting condition with the reference of a Holter monitor .The HR of the device was compared with the HR from the ECG signal recorded by the Holter monitor .The experimental results indicate that the arithmetical average error is about 0 .3 BPM .

Abstract:Background and objective: Heartbeat is a crucial vital sign, and radio-frequency technology can measure the micro-vibration of the body surface from a distance and extract the heartbeat signal, which can solve the compliance problem caused by wearable sensors. However, most existing works verify short-term controlled experiments and seldom consider the challenges posed by random body movements and posture changes during long-term monitoring in daily life scenarios. In this article, we propose a systematic solution called Radar-Beat, which enables accurate heartbeat monitoring using an mmWave FMCW radar device. Our goal is to promote the integration of contactless heartbeat monitoring into life scenarios. Methods: We proposes a sensitive body motion detection algorithm and an optimal Range-bin selection algorithm, which can automatically identify body motion and update the best heartbeat signal channel. Then, we construct a personalized heartbeat template for each signal segment and propose a global optimization model to improve the accuracy of heartbeat length estimation. Results: We use the synchronized ECG signal as the ground truth, results show strong agreement between Radar-Beat and synchrony ECG devices for heart rate and inter-beat interval (IBI) measurements in healthy subjects. In the heartbeat monitoring experiment for a total of 72 h and 56 min involving 11 participants, under a time coverage of 91.2%, the median error of IBI estimation was 12 ms. Conclusion: Radar-Beat has strong robustness to different individuals in different postures and positions. It can be deployed in a hospital bed or home to enable continuous heartbeat monitoring in an unobtrusive way.
