Abstract:A water-land-energy-food nexus framework is developed for revealing the relationship between ecological environment quality (EEQ) and environmental footprints in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei urban agglomeration (BTHUA), which integrates multiple techniques including harmony evaluation method, binary spatial-temporal matching model, and uncertainty analysis. Results indicate the general harmony degree of EEQ in the BTHUA ranges from 0.2 to 0.8 with an increased trend, which is mostly contributed by energy and food systems with shares of 46% and 35%, respectively. There exists an increased tendency in water-carbon-nitrogen footprints (with increase rates of 5.4%, 118.0% and 33.5%, respectively), but a decreased tendency in ecological footprint (with decline rates of 2.5%). The temporal and spatial matching degrees between EEQ and environmental footprints respectively reach 0.70 and 0.63, with a relatively match state. Outputs from resource environmental effects (REE) reveal energy system with a significant environmental pressure. Uncertainty analysis discloses that increasing 15% of indicator threshold leads to decreased harmony degree in terms of water, land and food systems (with decline rates of 21%, 49% and 35%), but results in an increased harmony degree of energy system with a change rate of 130%. Findings can support optimal allocation and sustainable utilization of resources in the BTHUA.
