Abstract:Based on the global loss data of five major natural disasters from 1990 to 2019 in EM-DAT database, the deaths and direct economic losses caused by disasters have been normalized and divided into intensive and extensive disasters, the relative importance of intensive and extensive disasters and the trend of losses have been analyzed globally and for typical countries. The results show that at the global scale, flood losses are mainly caused by extensive disasters, and the incidence and loss rate of extensive disasters are increasing. Deaths of landslides are mainly from extensive disasters, the incidence of extensive disasters also increase significantly. Economic losses caused by extensive storms dominate. Intensive earthquake and extreme temperature are responsible for most of the losses but have no obvious trend. Analysis of each typical country show that, unlike the world, the economic losses of floods and the deaths of landslides mainly came from intensive disasters. The total losses in typical countries are mostly on a downward trend, while the trend of the extensive disaster losses mainly increase. Meanwhile, there are a large number of countries with obvious trends of disaster losses in flood and storm. In conclusion, intensive earthquakes and extreme temperature disasters should be focused instead of extensive disasters. The loss caused by extensive storms should be of great concern, and extensive landslide disasters as well. The loss and trend of extensive flood disasters should be paid special attention by strengthening the assessment and prevention of their cumulative impacts.
