Abstract:Architectural energy-saving has become a hotspot in the world. Energy-saving for the existing public buildings could not only reduce energy consumption effectively, but also improve both outdoor environment and indoor healthy comfort to advance the quality of life and work, so it is a work of great significance. Combining with study process on energy-saving renovation for existing public buildings at home and abroad, this article analyzes the status of energy consumption in China and its significance to hope that the renovation work could be done smoothly through the cooperation of users, designers and government.

Abstract:There exists huge differences in climatic conditions and occupant energy-consuming behavior between Berlin and the "hot summer and cold winter zone of China" (HSCW), which implies that the building energy consumption compositions of two regions are completely different. In this paper, dynamic energy consumption simulation for passive houses with Design Builder software was performed. The results indicated that the improvement of building airtightness and exterior wall insulation can reduce annual heating and cooling load effectively, and more importantly the effect is much stronger on heating load than cooling load. Because of this, the paper proposed that the ratio of heating and cooling electricity consumption (r) should be adopted as an important index in energy efficiency evaluation of passive houses. It would contribute to the reasonable selection of ventilation modes and the exterior wall heat transfer coefficient, and benefit the healthy development of passive houses in HSCW.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a simplified method and build a model accordingly for estimating the energy-saving potentials of building construction and demolition with the consideration of China's rapid growth of building construction and its short actual lifespan of buildings. To demonstrate the practicability of the proposed method and model, we further develop an illustrative case study to estimate the energy-saving potentials from residential building sector in China. Our results show that a considerable amount of energy-saving potentials can be captured from now until 2020, 2030, or 2050 by smooth implementation of either controlling the growth in demand for the per capita residential building floor area or extending the actual lifespan of the residential buildings in China. Through this study, we fill the gap, in terms of method and model, of supporting the further improvement of China's existing energy conservation policies.

Abstract:Based on the theory of Life-Cycle Energy Analysis, the energy consumption of macro-level buildings in China was analyzed, and the key factors in every Life-Cycle phase were pointed out. With the analysis of building life-cycle energy consumption, carbon dioxide emissions related to buildings were calculated. It was indicated that the energy consumptions of building materials production and building operation account for largest share in building energy consumption. Reducing energy consumption on building operation and building materials were important to building energy saving and carbon dioxide mitigation.

Abstract:Rapid urbanization in China has resulted in great demands for energy, resources and pressure on the environment. The progress in China's development is considered in the context of energy efficiency in the built environment, including policy, technology and implementation. The key research challenges and opportunities are identified for delivering a low-carbon built environment. The barriers include the existing traditional sequential design process, the lack of integrated approaches and insufficient socio-technical knowledge. A proposed conceptual systemic model of an integrated approach identifies research opportunities. The organization of research activities should be initiated, operated and managed in a collaborative way among policy-makers, professionals, researchers and stakeholders. More emphasis is needed on integrating social, economic and environmental impacts in the short, medium and long terms. An ideal opportunity exists for China to develop its own expertise, not merely in a technical sense but in terms of vision and intellectual leadership in order to flourish in global collaborations. L'urbanisation rapide de la Chine a entraîné de fortes demandes d'énergie et de ressources et une pression importante sur l'environnement. Les progrès intervenus dans le développement de la Chine sont envisagés sous l'angle de l'efficacité énergétique du cadre bâti, qu'il s'agisse des politiques, des technologies ou des modes de mise en oeuvre. Sont identifiés les défis clés et les principales possibilités de la recherche pour assurer un cadre bâti bas carbone. Les obstacles incluent le processus classique existant de conception séquentielle, le manque d'approches intégrées et des connaissances sociotechniques insuffisantes. Un modèle systémique conceptuel proposé d'une approche intégrée identifie les possibilités de recherche. L'organisation des activités de recherche devrait être engagée, exécutée et gérée de manière collaborative entre les décideurs, les professionnels, les chercheurs et les parties prenantes. Il est nécessaire de mettre davantage l'accent sur l'intégration des répercussions sociales, économiques et environnementales à court, moyen et long terme. Abstract:In order to ensure China, a populous country, to develop in a sustainable way, it is an urgent task to disseminate the concept of sustainability and put it into practice for urban construction. However, it is impossible for China to simply copy the experiences of developed countries, since China has the higher population and building density and less availability of reusable energy per square meter floor area. Therefore, it is necessary to develop the sustainable building technologies applicable to various climate regions, economic conditions, and residential customs in China, as well as sustainable to the most occupants and owners. Based on an introduction of the current situation of the development of construction industry and the energy consumption of buildings in China, this paper analyses the requirements, characteristics, standards for sustainable housing and urban construction, and recommends series of technical approaches along with different phases of sustainable design and construction, which strengthen a good cooperation among researchers, designers and constructors of different majors including architecture, planning, building physics, building services, and so on. Moreover, some issues, which need further research and especially handling, are pointed out along with the recommendations. Finally, policy issue related with the sustainable development of urban construction in China is discussed.

Abstract:Increasing building constructions have become one of the fastest-growing drivers of carbon emissions. Energy conservation and carbon reduction in buildings have become increasingly crucial in the context of global carbon neutrality. This paper assesses the annual total energy and carbon embodied in the ten most intensively used building materials in China, aiming to find potential CO2 reduction opportunities in the construction industry from a macroscopic perspective. The results show that: (1) the embodied energy and carbon of cement, steel, and brick account for more than 70% of the total embodied energy and carbon of all building materials; (2) differences in the embodied energy and carbon between steel-concrete buildings and brick-concrete buildings are not distinct; (3) disparities in the embodied energy and carbon of building materials between different regions are significant. The eastern and south-eastern regions consume excessive building materials and embody significantly higher energy and carbon than other regions. Several strategies are provided for China's building sector in energy and carbon reduction.

Abstract:China is committed to reaching peak carbon by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060. The goals of reducing energy consumption and building a "beautiful China" are being urgently pursued in China. The building studied in this paper is located in the city of Turpan, where the problem of excessive energy use among buildings is significant due to the region's hot summers and cold winters. Additionally, the fact that the office building studied in this paper has an east–west orientation is significant: the building's main façade is oriented to the west, comprising a large area of single-layer glass curtain wall. Based on this, this paper proposes optimization strategies from two perspectives of renovation and new construction. Four design options are proposed at the retrofit level: glazed circular curtain wall; glazed enclosed curtain wall; west-facing double-glazed curtain wall circulation combined with south-facing light from the east; recycling of windows on the inside of the exterior glass curtain wall. These suggestions focus on retrofitting the glass curtain wall on the west elevation of the building. Two design options are proposed at the new-build level: west-facing south-oriented light and west-facing north-oriented light. These suggestions were primarily built around the idea of changing the orientation of the windows on the west elevation. The results show that the optimal solution is to implement the west-facing double-glazed curtain wall circulation combined with south-facing light from the east. This program shows a 64.14% reduction in heating energy consumption, a 77.12% reduction in cooling energy consumption, and a 69.67% reduction in total energy consumption. The above research has improved the deficiencies in the performance-based energy efficiency retrofit of office buildings in the region and provided new ideas and suggestions for policymakers and designers to build energy-efficiency retrofits in the early stages.

Abstract:Facing the continuous and severe increasing of energy consumption of buildings in China,a comprehensive low carbon design strategy for sustainable buildings is urgently required to achieve restricted goals of energy consumption and carbon emissions reduction declared in the compendium of China's "Twelfth Five-Year Plans".The existing laws,regulations and design standards in the realm of energy saving architecture are introduced.Based on the original definition of "sustainable development",the sustainable buildings can be achieved through methods which are environment friendly,ecological,energy efficient,pollution-free,or bioclimatically compatible.Furthermore,a comprehensive and integrated low carbon design strategy is proposed,consisting of five single options,among which a highly efficient energy management system is the core.Energy saving technologies of HVAC systems and lighting systems,designs of building with integrated renewable energy sources are also required.It emphasizes the significance of awareness raise and behavior change in this field,as well as the carbon offsetting.

Abstract:With the continuous implementation of a plan for reconstruction of "Beautiful Countryside" in China, the rural environment and appearance of rural houses have been significantly improved. However, those houses in cold areas of China have great trouble with indoor temperature and heating-related energy consumption. After investigating the current situation of the layout, building envelope, indoor temperature, and energy consumption of the rural houses renovated by the plan of "Beautiful Countryside" in Shandong Province, this paper puts forward the improvement measures of raising indoor temperature and reducing energy consumption. On this basis, a typical rural house was selected, and DesignBuilder was utilized to simulate the effects before and after the application of different renovation measures for this house. The results show that the main way to raise indoor temperature and reduce energy consumption is to improve the thermal insulation performance of the building envelope, including renovation of the roof, exterior walls, doors and windows, and attached sunspace. In addition, combined with the achievements of "Beautiful Countryside" reconstruction, this paper shall propose specific renovation practices which are suitable for different rural houses. Based on the level of economic development in rural areas, it also puts forward some feasible renovation paths for different rural areas, and further provides references for other areas to carry out relevant work in the future.
Managing carbon emissions in China through building energy efficiency

Abstract:This paper attempts to analyse the role of building energy efficiency (BEE) in China in addressing climate change mitigation. It provides an analysis of the current situation and future prospects for the adoption of BEE technologies in Chinese cities. It outlines the economic and institutional barriers to large-scale deployment of the sustainable, low-carbon, and even carbon-free construction techniques. Based on a comprehensive overview of energy demand characteristics and development trends driven by economic and demographic growth, different policy tools for cost-effective CO(2) emission reduction in the Chinese construction sector are described. We propose a comprehensive approach combining building design and construction, and the urban planning and building material industries, in order to drastically improve BEE during this period of rapid urban development. A coherent institutional framework needs to be established to ensure the implementation of efficiency policies. Regulatory and incentive options should be integrated into the policy portfolios of BEE to minimise the efficiency gap and to realise sizeable carbon emissions cuts in the next decades. We analyse in detail several policies and instruments, and formulate relevant policy proposals fostering low-carbon construction technology in China. Specifically, Our analysis shows that improving building energy efficiency can generate considerable carbon emissions reduction credits with competitive price under the CDM framework.

Abstract:In China, a surging urbanization highlights the significance of building energy conservation. However, most building energy-saving schemes are designed solely in compliance with prescriptive codes and lack consideration of the local situations, resulting in an unsatisfactory effect and a waste of funds. Moreover, the actual effect of the design has yet to be thoroughly verified through field tests. In this study, a method of modifying conventional building energy-saving design based on research into the local climate and residents’ living habits was proposed, and residential buildings in Panzhihua, China were selected for trial. Further, the modification scheme was implemented in an actual project with its effect verified by field tests. Research grasps the precise climate features of Panzhihua, which was previously not provided, and concludes that Panzhihua is a hot summer and warm winter zone. Accordingly, the original internal insulation was canceled, and the shading performance of the windows was strengthened instead. Test results suggest that the consequent change of SET* does not exceed 0.5 °C, whereas variations in the energy consumption depend on the room orientation. For rooms receiving less solar radiation, the average energy consumption increased by approximately 20%, whereas for rooms with a severe western exposure, the average energy consumption decreased by approximately 11%. On the other hand, the cost savings of removing the insulation layer are estimated at 177 million RMB (1 USD ≈ 6.5 RMB) per year. In conclusion, the research-based modification method proposed in this study can be an effective tool for improving building energy efficiency adapted to local conditions.

Abstract:Outlines current situation of building energy consumption in China. Makes new classification of buildings based on the energy performance. Points out the energy consumption features and the potentials of energy saving for each type of buildings. According to the potential savings, presents the key technologies to achieve these savings, including energy optimization in building design process, new technologies in building fabrics, ventilators and exhaust heat recovers, heat pumps, technologies to reduce energy consumption in distribution systems, temperature and humidity independent control system, energy saving optimizing control of building automatic systems, building combined power, heating & cooling system (BCHP), new type of configuration of district heating system as well as high efficiency lightings. Policies are also important to ensure these technologies to be accepted widely. Relative studies for policy making and for policy operation should also be carried on. Lists four projects, including building energy consumption model and the data collection system, energy label system for residential buildings, energy estimation for commercial buildings, and energy label system for home appliances.

Abstract:The exterior wall of northern rural house in China takes up over 40% of the total thermal dissipation of the house. Inner surface of the exterior walls often freeze seriously with dew and frost. The paper brings forward the optimum fabric of exterior wall and the principle of choosing green insulation material through analyzing the condition of climate, construction and economic of northern rural area in China in order to solve these disadvantage. Chinese construction industry energy efficiency analysis with undesirable carbon emissions and construction waste outputs

Abstract:As the construction industry generates more than 30% of global greenhouse gases and more than 40% of global urban waste every year, energy conservation and emission reduction has become extremely important. This study proposes an innovative output system that includes undesirable carbon dioxide and construction waste outputs. A three-stage DEA-Malmquist model is used to measure the energy efficiency of the construction industry in 30 Chinese provinces from 2008 to 2017, and a stochastic frontier method is used in the second stage to analyze and remove the energy efficiency influences of environmental factors and random errors. It was found that the total factor energy efficiency change (TFEECH) and technology change (TECH) in China's construction industry was underestimated because of the environmental factors and random errors. GRP per capita, energy consumption structures, industrial development degrees, and industrial concentrations were all found to play a positive role in improving energy efficiency; however, urbanization levels, technical equipment, policy support, and marketization were found to have a negative effect. Policy suggestions are given based on the empirical results.
