Abstract:Crystal facet engineering of semiconductors has been proven to be an effective strategy to increase photocatalytic performances. However, the mechanism involved in the photocatalysis is not yet known. Herein, we report our success in that photocatalytic performances of the Cl(-) ion capped CoO octahedrons with exposed {111} facets were activated by a treatment using AgNO3 and NH3·H2O solutions. The clean CoO {111} facets were found to be highly reactivity faces. On the basis of the polar structure of the exposed {111} surfaces, a charge separation model between polar {111} surfaces is proposed. There is an internal electric field between polar {111} surfaces due to the spontaneous polarization. The internal electric field provides a driving force for charge separation. The reduction and oxidation reactions selectively take place on the positive and negative polar {111} surfaces. The charge separation model provides a clear insight into charge transfer in the semiconductor nanocrystals with high photocatalytic activities and offer guidance to design more effective photocatalysts, solar cells, photoelectrodes, and other photoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Efficient delafossite CuCoO 2 photo(electro)catalysts necessitate effective separation and transport of photogenerated carriers to enable the production of solar fuel. Addressing this requirement, the current study employed facet engineering to induce the surface polarization effect. Hydrothermal conditions were utilized to prepare CuCoO 2 photo(electro)catalysts with diverse morphologies and sizes. Specifically, CuCoO 2 hexagonal nanosheets, predominantly exposing the (001) facet and possessing a thickness of 120 nm, exhibited optimal performance, as evidenced by a photocurrent density of 40 μA/cm 2 under zero-bias conditions and 90 % degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride within 150 min. To overcome the limitations associated with hydrothermal preparation, Ca substitutional doping was employed. This doping strategy caused disruption of the O–Cu–O dumbbell-like structural motif, transforming CuCoO 2 into an open-layered structure while simultaneously reducing the thickness of CuCoO 2 hexagonal nanosheets to 30 nm. Consequently, an enhancement in the photo(electro)catalytic performance was achieved. By striking a balance between the surface polarization effect and the doping effect, CuCoO 2 hexagonal nanosheets with 0.5 % Ca doping content and a thickness of 80 nm exhibited the most significant photo(electro)catalytic performance. This study presents a feasible strategy and concept for optimizing the morphology and hydrothermal preparation conditions of CuCoO 2 nanomaterials, leading to improved photo(electro)catalytic performance.

Abstract:Efficient photoelectrochemical (PEC) water split-ting requires charge separation and extraction from a photoactive semiconductor. Such a charge transport process is widely believed to be dictated by the bulk energetics of the semiconductor. However, its dependence on surface energetics along the semiconductor/electrolyte interface remains an open question. Here, we elucidate the influence of surface energetics on the performance of a well-established Mo-doped BiVO4 photoanode whose surface energetics are regulated by the facet-selective cocatalyst loading. Surprisingly, photodeposition of RhOx and CoOx cocatalysts onto the {010} and {110} facets, respectively, strongly enhanced the charge-separation efficiency, in addition to improving the injection efficiency for water oxidation. Detailed optoelectrical simulations confirm that the synergistic enhancement of charge separation originates from the distinct effects of the cocatalyst loading on the surface energetics. This insight into the fundamental charge-separation mechanism in PEC cells provides a perspective for cell design and operation.

Abstract:Crystal facet engineering has been recognized as a powerful strategy to finely modulate the charge separation behavior in semiconductor photocatalysis; however, disclosing the intrinsic roles that the morphologies and crystal facets play on photogenerated charge separation of semiconductor nanocrystals remains elusive. Herein, exemplified on the typical visible-light-responsive photocatalyst bismuth vanadate (BiVO4 ), for the first time, the successful fabrication is reported of well-defined BiVO4 square nanocrystals with precisely controllable (040)/(200) facet proportion, which undergo a dissolution-recrystallization-facet growth process accompanied with tetragonal to monoclinic phase transition. Spatial separation of photogenerated electrons and holes has been evidently demonstrated to take place between (040) and (200) facets of BiVO4 nanocrystals, on which the charge separation efficiency is verified to definitely depend on the facet proportion of (040)/(200). Further theoretical simulation reveals that the matching degree of charge collection length and crystal configuration is considered to be the major factor determining charge separation efficiency of BiVO4 nanocrystals. This study presents a strategy to fabricate morphology-tailored semiconductors, which will be favorable to advance the understanding of spatial charge separation in semiconductor photocatalysis.

Abstract:As a candidate for photocatalyst, the photocatalytic performance of cuprous oxide (Cu 2 O) is severely restricted by its high charge carrier recombination rate, self-photocorrosion and the uncertainty of crystal plane. In order to improve the photocatalytic performance and deeply analyze the photocatalytic mechanism, the Cu 2 O nanocrystals with cubic, cuboctahedral and octahedral structures were combined with n-type ZnO to prepare Cu 2 O/ZnO heterojunction photocatalysts. The effects of crystal facet of Cu 2 O and Zn/Cu ratios on the photocatalytic performances of Cu 2 O/ZnO heterojunctions were explored into. The results show that the cuboctahedron Cu 2 O with {100} and {111} facets exhibits more surprising catalytic performance due to the energy-level difference between the two facets, leading to higher electron–hole pair separation efficiency when compared with the octahedral Cu 2 O with {111} facets and cubic Cu 2 O with {100} facets. In addition, optimized Cu 2 O/ZnO heterojunction with appropriate Zn/Cu ratio exhibits the collaborative advantages of the two materials, so the catalytic activity and stability are effectively improved.

Abstract:Until now, the photogenerated charge separation mechanism is not clear in photocatalysis. Based on the structures at the atomic scale of the polar crystal facets with photocatalytic activities, a general separation model of photogenerated charge between polar facets under a spontaneous electric field is presented. This charge separation model is proven by photo‐induced selective redox reactions on polar planes, photovoltaic and rectification effects in the polar direction orientated thin films, and electric field assisted assembly and alignment of semiconductor nanowires grown along the polar direction. This polar structure is similar to a semiconductor p–n junction, which can control the movement of electronic carriers and can be used to fabricate high‐efficiency photocatalysts and electronic and optoelectronic devices based on a new principle.

“X-Scheme” Charge Separation Induced by Asymmetrical Localized Electronic Band Structures at the Ceria Oxide Facet Junction

Abstract:Photogenerated charge transfer can be tuned by crystal face controlling and heterostructure engineering. However, it is exceptionally challenging to understand the separation and transfer process of charge carriers, especially on the facet junction. Here, we show a separation pathway of the charge carriers in (111)/(100)CeO2–x nanomaterials as the “X-Scheme junction” using selected region electron energy-loss spectroscopies. The driving force for the “X-Scheme junction” can be attributed to the localized electronic band structures’ asymmetry of the ceria, which gathers the photogenerated electrons on the surface of the (111) plane and accumulates the photogenerated holes on the (100) face. Surface oxygen vacancies channel the photogenerated electrons and holes further to the Ce3+ of the (111) plane and the Ce4+ of the (100) plane, respectively, resulting in an enhanced photo-oxidative nitric oxide removal efficiency under visible-light irradiation. Furthermore, the system is found to integrate metal nanoparticles to form Pd–CeO2–x , including Pd-(111)CeO2–x and Pd-(100)CeO2–x , which significantly restricts nitric dioxide production as a byproduct. This work provides a unique approach to understanding single-crystal photocatalysts based on the facet junction.

Abstract:Understanding on the photogenerated charge separation from a microscopic level remains a challenge and is highly desirable as it provides a cornerstone for designing high-performance photocatalysts. Herein, facet engineering is chosen as a tool to reveal the relationship between the charge separation/transfer and crystal structure. A series of BiOBr nanosheets with dominantly exposed facet of (001) or (010) as well as different lateral facet exposure ratios are constructed via adjusting pH value during the hydrothermal process. It is found that exposure of anisotropic crystal facets allows the separative transfer of photogenerated electrons and holes onto the lateral facets and dominantly exposed facets, respectively, which is attributed to the junction formed between distinct facets (i.e., facet junction). In the case of BiOBr-5 with (010)/(102) facet junction, the electron transfer rate (k ET) and efficiency (η ET) are 3.658 × 106s−1 and 54.09%, which are superior than the counterpart of BiOBr-1 with (001)/(110) facet junction. The fast electron transfer rate and high transfer efficiency of BiOBr-5 result in the high CO evolution rate from CO2 photoreduction under artificial sunlight. Our work may bring some new insights into the mechanism of facet junction and rational design of photocatalysts with high performance for solar energy storage in future.

Boosting Carrier Separation and Transport in CuGaO2 Photocathodes by Coupled Effects of Surface Polarization and Facet-Junction

Abstract:This study investigates the synergistic enhancement of carrier separation and transport in CuGaO2 photocathodes, achieved through the coupled effects of surface polarization and facet -junction engineering. Delafossite CuGaO2 microspheres, which exhibit a flower-like micro -nano hierarchical structure, are synthesized facilely through a one -pot hydrothermal process. These microspheres self -assemble from CuGaO2 nanosheets, driven by electrostatic forces among crystal facets. Morphology and size are systematically modulated by pH values, solvent composition, and reaction temperature. The CuGaO2 nanosheets, serving as fundamental building blocks, manifest notable surface polarization effects that facilitate the efficient transport of photo -generated carriers. The facet -junction formed between intersecting CuGaO2 nanosheets facilitates the collection of photo -generated electrons and holes on both sides of the interface, leading to spatial separation. Consequently, the CuGaO2 microspheres synergistically combine nanoscale surface polarization and microscale facet -junction effects, promoting the effective separation and rapid transport of electron -hole pairs generated under visible -light irradiation. The resulting simple bare photocathode, constructed using CuGaO2 microspheres, demonstrates a photocurrent density of 32 mu A/cm2 at zero -bias, with a peak incident photon -to -current efficiency of 12.72 % at a 450 nm wavelength. Further optimization of the CuGaO2 photocathode yields a better photocurrent density of 138 mu A/cm2 at 0.33 VRHE. These results underscore the significance of integrating nanoscale surface polarization effects with microscale facet -junction effects to achieve efficient separation and rapid transport of photogenerated carriers in photoelectrochemical cells.
Asymmetrical Facet-Oriented Anisotropic Charge Migration of MIL-101(Fe) with Internal Electric Field-Steered Photogenerated Holes for Boosting Photocatalytic Oxidation

Abstract:Controllably steering the photogenerated charge behaviors of semiconductor photocatalysts is crucial in improving photocatalytic oxidation. By engineering the primary facet from (101) to (112), the asymmetrical feather of MIL-101(Fe)(112) result in potential difference on varied facets to contribute to anisotropic charge migration, which has been determined by the preferentially photodeposited cocatalysts on facet (112) and facet (119) of the nanocrystal. Thus-observed anisotropic charge migration of MIL-101(Fe)(112) contribute to 10 times stronger internal electric field (IEF) to accelerate charge separation and migration. Also, we demonstrate the lowest unoccupied crystal orbital (LUCO) of MIL-101(Fe)(112) deepened (up to 3.33eV vs. NHE) and acquire 3.5 times higher photogenerated holes for robust hole oxidation capacities. As a proof-of-concept, the optimal MIL-101(Fe)(112) can acquire 100% higher degradation rate and 33% higher mineralization than MIL-101(Fe)(101). This work highlights the importance of unsymmetric facet manipulation in tailoring photocatalysts for efficient photocatalytic oxidation.
Tailoring morphology symmetry of bismuth vanadate photocatalysts for efficient charge separation

Abstract:Although spatial charge separation between different facets of semiconductor crystals has been recognized as a general strategy in photocatalysis, the vital role of crystal morphology symmetry in charge separation properties still remains elusive. Herein, taking monoclinic bismuth vanadate (BiVO 4 ) as a platform, we found distinct charge separation difference via rationally tailoring the morphology symmetry from octahedral to truncated octahedral crystals. For octahedral BiVO 4 , photogenerated electrons and holes can be separated between edges and quasi-equivalent facets. However, as for truncated octahedral crystals, photogenerated electrons tend to transfer to {010} facets while photogenerated holes prefer to accumulate on {120} facets, thus realizing the spatial separation of photogenerated charge between different facets. Morphology tailoring of BiVO 4 crystals leads to a significantly improved photogenerated charge separation efficiency and photocatalytic water oxidation activity. The built-in electric field for driving the separation of photogenerated electrons and holes is considered to be modulated by tuning the morphology symmetry of BiVO 4 crystals. This work discloses the significant roles of morphology symmetry in photogenerated charge separation and facilitates the rational design of artificial photocatalysts.

Abstract:Cu2O has great potential as a photocathode for photoelectrochemical water splitting, and efficient charge separation through interface modulation is the key for potential application. In this work, we develop a facial strategy to maximally reduce the recombination of charge carriers via CuSCN in two directions, that is, E-CuSCN on an FTO substrate from ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) electrolyte as the hole-transport layer and D-CuSCN on the Cu2O layer from diethanolamine (DEA) electrolyte as the hole-storage layer. As a result, the E-CuSCN/Cu2O/D-CuSCN with efficient charge separation shows improved activity with a photocurrent density up to 5 mAcm(-2), which is 7 times higher than that of the pristine Cu2O. This work provides a new method for separating photocharges based on the design of interfacial crystal structure for high-efficiency photocathodes.
Boosting Charge Separation on Epitaxial In2O3 Octahedron-Nanowire Crystal Facet-Based Homojunctions for Robust Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

Abstract:Hindering the recombination of photogenerated charges in photoelectrodes is extremely essential yet hugely challenging. Herein, the In2O3 homojunctions comprising of square nanowires exclusively enclosed by {001} facets and octahedrons fully surrounded by {111} facets are exemplified to illustrate a new strategy of crystal facet-induced charges separation. Kelvin probe force microscopy, spatially resolved surface photovoltage, photo-depositions and theoretical calculations corroborate that the oriented built-in electric field from {111} to {001} facets caused by work function difference of two facets render the photogenerated electrons and holes to accumulate on surface of octahedrons and nanowires, respectively, achieving the effective charges separation with long spatial distance. Benefiting from this advantage, the In2O3 crystal facet-based homojunctions exhibit dramatically higher photoelectrochemical water splitting activity compared with standalone nanowires, octahedrons and truncated octahedrons. The new strategy of boosting the charges separation can be extended to other applications such as photodetectors, solar cells and photocatalysis.

Abstract:Hybrid photocatalytic nanostructures composed of plasmonic metal and wide-band-gap semiconductor components have been widely developed, in which metal not only acts as a cocatalyst to trap the photogenerated electrons from semiconductor for improved charge separation and provide highly active sites for accelerated reaction kinetics, but also serves as a light-harvesting antennae to extend the light absorption region based on the injection of plasmonic hot electrons into the semiconductor. In both circumstances, rational design of metal/semiconductor interface is highly desirable to smooth the migration of electrons and promote the separation of carriers. Herein, based on the deposition of Au on TiO2 nanocrystals with different exposed facets, it is found that the formation of Au/TiO2(101) interface lowers the height of Schottky barrier in comparison with Au/TiO2(001) interface, enhancing the transfer of conduction band (CB) electrons from TiO2 to Au cocatalysts under ultraviolet light irradiation and promoting the hot electron injection from plasmonic Au into the CB of TiO2 with the excitation of Au by visible light. The more efficient interfacial charge transfer and separation enable more electrons participating in the conversion of CO2 to CO and CH4. As a result, at both excitation wavelengths, the Au-TiO2 sample with exclusive Au/TiO2(101) interfaces significantly ameliorates the photocatalytic activities in CO and CH4 production compared to other samples containing Au/TiO2(001) interfaces. The interfacial facet engineered Schottky barrier may open a new window to rationally designing metal–semiconductor hybrid structures for photocatalysis.

Abstract:One of the most challenging issues in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution is to efficiently separate photocharge carriers. Although MoS2 loading could effectively improve the photoactivity of TiO2, a fundamental understanding of the charge transfer process between TiO2 and MoS2 is still lacking. Herein, TiO2 photocatalysts with different exposed facets were used to construct MoS2/TiO2 heterostructures. XPS, ESR, together with PL measurements evidenced the Type II electron transfer from MoS2 to {001}-TiO2. Differently, electron-rich characteristic of {101}-faceted TiO2 were beneficial for the direct Z-scheme recombination of electrons in TiO2 with holes in MoS2. This synergetic effect between facet engineering and oxygen vacancies resulted in more than one order of magnitude enhanced hydrogen evolution rate. This finding revealed the elevating mechanism of constructing high-performance MoS2/TiO2 heterojunction based on facet and defect engineering.
Surface Electric Field Driven Directional Charge Separation on Ta3N5 Cuboids Enhancing Photocatalytic Solar Energy Conversion

Abstract:Enhancing the separation and transfer of photogenerated carriers is critical factor for increasing the light to chemical energy conversion efficiencies. Here, we exposed {001} and {010} facets on [100] oriented Ta3N5 cuboid, creating 18.6 times enhancement in photocatalytic reduction of CO2 to CH4 and a 0.42 V-RHE (reference to reversible hydrogen electrode) photocurrent onset potential for photoelectrochemical water splitting. The pronounced photocatalytic performance is mainly attributed to that surface electric field from large surface band bending of the {001} with high work function drives electrons and holes to {010} and {001}, respectively, achieving a spatial charge separation. Differing to a main effect in charge separation and transfer for the traditional junction electric field region at buried heterjunction or homojunction interface, a surface electric field region is a place where charges separate and transfer efficiently and also the place for the catalytic reactions to occur.
The Effect of Different Exposed Facets on the Photoelectrocatalytic Degradation of O-Chlorophenol Using P-Type Cu2O Crystals

Abstract:Although it is known that the efficacy of photoelectrocatalysts is enhanced by increasing the amount of high energy surface exposed, the development of a universal synthesis method with both superior activity and simplicity is needed for scalable applications. We herein controllably fabricated cuprous oxide (Cu2O) micro crystals with different morphologies, evolving from cubes, cuboctahedra, truncated octahedra and finally to octahedra on indium tin oxide (ITO) glass substrates, by a facile electrochemical deposition method. The structures of facet-engineered Cu2O samples and the underlying mechanism for the morphology evolution were investigated. The separation of photogenerated hole-electron pairs on Cu2O crystals with different exposed facets was characterized by measuring the photocurrent densities with chopped illumination, which increased with the increased concentrations of PVP: the octahedral Cu2O crystals, with the highest proportion of {111} facets exposed, exhibited the lowest electro-hole recombination in contrast to the cubes, cuboctahedra, and truncated octahedra, respectively. The photoelectrocatalytic degradation efficiency of the o-chlorophenol (2-CP) pollutant under sunlight irradiation with Cu2O-coated photocathode was further investigated to reveal the effect of different exposed facets. Due to the increased number of surface active sites available for degradation reactions, the octahedral Cu2O microcrystals presented higher photoelectrocatalytic activity compared to other shapes. Active oxygen species detected by electron spin-resonance (ESR) spectrometry implied that abundant superoxide radicals (O2●−) were the dominant active radicals in the degradation.

Abstract:The shape-controlled synthesis of cuprous oxide (Cu$_2$O) photocatalysts with both low or high index crystal planes has received increasing attention due to their unique facet-dependent properties. Since they are cheap and earth abundant, these well-defined Cu$_2$O nanostructures are extensively used for different photocatalytic reactions, also because of their strong visible light absorption capability. However, further development will be still needed to enhance the efficiency and photostability of Cu$_2$O, which still limits its industrial application. We start this review by summarizing the synthetic advancement in the facet engineering of Cu$_2$O and other associated hybrid Cu$_2$O-based heterostructures with a special emphasis put on their growth mechanism. We then discuss different facet-dependent properties, which are relevant to photocatalysis. In the subsequent section, we present a critical discussion on the photocatalytic performance of faceted Cu$_2$O nanostructures during organic synthesis, hydrogen production, and carbon dioxide photoreduction. The relation between photocatalytic efficiency and product selectivity with exposed crystal facets or with different composition of hybrid nanostructures is also discussed. Finally, important strategies are proposed to overcome the photostability issue, while outlining the course of future development to further boost the technological readiness of well-defined Cu$_2$O-based photocatalysts.

Abstract:The search for active narrow band gap semiconductor photocatalysts that directly split water or degrade organic pollutants under solar irradiation remains an open issue. We synthesized Cu2Se nanowires with exposed {111} facets using ethanol and glycerol as morphology controlling agents. The {111} facets were found to be the active facets for decomposing organic contaminants in the entire solar spectrum. Based on the polar structure of the Cu2Se {111} facets, a charge separation model between polar (111) and ((1) over bar(1) over bar(1) over bar) surfaces is proposed. The internal electric field between polar (111) and ((1) over bar(1) over bar(1) over bar) surfaces created by spontaneous polarization drives charge separation. The reduction and oxidation reactions occur on the positive (111) and negative ((1) over bar(1) over bar(1) over bar) polar surfaces, respectively. This suggests the surface-engineering of narrow band gap semiconductors as a strategy to fabricate photocatalysts with high reactivity in the entire solar spectrum. The charge separation model can deepen the understanding of charge transfer in other semiconductor nanocrystals with high photocatalytic activities and offer guidance to design more effective photocatalysts as well as new types of solar cells, photoelectrodes and photoelectric devices.
