Abstract:The promoting effect of ceria in the electrocatalytic activity of rhodium for ethanol electro-oxidation in alkali media has been studied. Rh/C, CeO2/C and RhCeO2/C catalysts were synthesized and characterized by TEM, XRD, XPS, TG-MS, H2-TPR and XAS. The electrocatalytic activity was studied by Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) and chronoamperometry. The onset potential of oxidation on RhCeO2/C was shifted negatively as compared to that on Rh/C, despite ceria itself does not show any electrocatalytic activity. The promoting effect of ceria has been attributed to the improved rhodium dispersion, and differences in the oxidation state of rhodium between Rh/C and RhCeO2/C were not found. The carbon support reduces rhodium species to Rh0, and also partially reduces ceria, during the samples preparation, and the surface of the carbon support is oxidised.

Abstract:Ketonization of carboxylic acids provides an attractive way for upgrading biomass feedstocks into biofuels. Here, a series of Mg-Al hydrotalcite (HT) catalysts doped with different Ce contents were prepared and used for the ketonization of propionic acid. Mg3Al0.9Ce0.1 displayed the highest ketonization activity (90.6% conversion of propionic acid) under mild reaction conditions (350 degrees C). By applying SEM, TEM, H-2-TPR, CO2/NH3-TPD, XPS, etc., the mechanism for the improvement of catalytic activity and stability was obtained. When the doping content of Ce is low, such as in Mg3Al0.9Ce0.1, cerium oxide is uniformly dispersed on the HT support. At the same time, the strong interaction between the CeO2 species and Mg-Al hydrotalcite led to the improvement of redox properties and modified acid-base sites, which is beneficial for the ketonization reaction. However, the structure of the HT support is destroyed by the agglomerated cerium oxide when a more doped Ce is employed, and the specific surface area and the surface Ce3+ ratio are remarkably lowered, thereby causing a significant decrease in the ketonization activity. By using the temperature programmed surface reaction (TPSR) technique, a deeper insight into the mechanism of reaction pathways over different catalysts is gained. The significant improvement in the reaction stability of the ketonization reaction over Mg3Al0.9Ce0.1 as compared to unmodified catalysts could be ascribed to the strengthening of the M-O bond of the catalyst after the introduction of Ce.

Abstract:A series of palladium acetylide complexes with the structures of Pd(PPh3)2(CCR)2 (R=C(CH3)2OH, CH2OCOCH3, CH2OH, p-C6H4CCH, C6H5) were developed for homogeneous copolymerization of polar with non-polar alkynes. The catalytic activity of the five palladium acetylide complexes towards copolymerization of propargyl alcohol (OHP) with p-diethynylbenzene (p-DEB) is compared and discussed. The complexes containing polar alkynyl ligands show higher activity than corresponding complexes containing non-polar ligands. Solvent systems exhibit significant influence on realizing homogeneous polymerization and obtaining soluble copolymer. The copolymerization of OHP with p-DEB initiated with these catalysts could proceed under mild conditions to give soluble π-conjugated copolymer in yields as high as 66%. Features for copolymerization of OHP with p-DEB using Pd(PPh3)2(CCCH2OH)2 in CHCl3/MeOH mixed solvents have been described.

Abstract:Effect of adding CeO2 to Pd/α-Al2O3 as a catalyst promoter was investigated by X-ray diffraction, H2 chemisorption, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy methods. The addition of 0.8% CeO2 (wt%) greatly increased palladium dispersion on the α-Al2O3 support and decreased the particle size of palladium. Meanwhile, the addition of CeO2, increased the surface concentration of Pd. The in situ FTIR spectroscopy study indicated that CO was adsorbed on 1% Pd–0.8% CeO2/α-Al2O3 in the forms of linear species (band at 2089cm−1) and bridged species (bands at 1967 and 1908cm−1), and that the latter form was more stable. Methyl nitrite was very active and methoxylate could be observed from the IR spectra after methyl nitrite passed through the catalyst. Catalytic effects were evaluated in a micro-fixed-bed reactor at atmosphere pressure by using vapor-phase catalytic coupling reaction of carbon monoxide to (COOCH3)2 (dimethyl oxalate) as a model reaction.

Abstract:Aldol condensation is a very useful reaction for biomass upgrading by coupling small molecule platform compounds into high value-added products. Here we choose acetaldehyde (AcH) condensation, the rate-determining step in bioethanol transformations, as a targeted reaction, and prepared four CeO2 catalysts with different concentrations of surface oxygen vacancies to investigate the role of oxygen vacancies in this reaction. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time to demonstrate that there is a linear correlation between the activity of aldol condensation and the concentration of oxygen vacancies. Based on in-situ FTIR studies, we conclude that oxygen vacancies are the Lewis acid sites for activation and stabilization of AcH, while lattice oxygen act as base sites for the formation of enolate species which are the key intermediates for AcH coupling reactions. Moreover, the proposed reaction mechanism indicates that Ce cations which are weak Lewis acid sites are not involved in the AcH condensation.

Abstract:Development of convenient and effective heterogeneous non-noble metal catalysts for α-alkylation of ketones with alcohols is challenging in heterogeneous catalysis. Here, we report active non-noble metal Cu/CuOx catalysts for the construction of C-C bonds by the α-alkylation of ketones with alcohols through the borrowing hydrogen methodology. The optimal Cu/CuOx-250 catalyst exhibits good catalytic performance in the reactions to give the corresponding products in 50-96% yields. The Cu/CuOx catalysts are characterized by different analysis techniques such as XRD, TEM, XPS, H2-TPR, BET, and ICP. Moreover, the catalyst can be reused at least for five successive cycles without significant loss of activity. The present study provides meaningful insights into the development of non-noble metal heterogeneous catalysts for α-alkylation of ketones with alcohols.

Abstract:Selective hydrogenation of alkynols compounds to produce high value-added enols is an important reaction in the fine chemical industry. The construction of selective hydrogenation catalysts for alkynols is challenging because the alkynyl group is prone to be over hydrogenated and the selectivity in the hydrogenation is always low. Herein, a simple sacrificial template strategy was designed to prepare mesoporous CeO2, on which ultrafine and highly-dispersed bimetallic PdCu nanoparticles were anchored, obtaining the PdCu@CeO2 catalyst. Introducing non-precious metallic Cu can improve the selectivity of precious metal Pd catalyst for the selective hydrogenation of alkynols through electronic and geometric modulation. The obtained PdCu@CeO2 catalyst showed high selectivity (99%) and good recyclability for the selective hydrogenation of the probe compound propynol ethoxylate under mild conditions. The PdCu@CeO2 catalyst also exhibited excellent performance in the catalytic selective hydrogenation of various substituted alkynols. Therefore, this research work provides a feasible strategy for the effective regulation of catalytic performance, and has potential application for the efficient catalytic selective hydrogenation of alkynols in the fine chemical industry.

Penta‐coordinated Al3+ Stabilized Defect‐Rich Ceria on Al2O3 Supported Palladium Catalysts for Lean Methane Oxidation

Abstract:In heterogeneous catalysis, the strong interaction between metal and support can significantly modulate the electronic properties of the metals and play a crucial role in metal particle dispersion and morphology. Herein, a facile strategy was utilized to fabricate highly dispersive palladium catalysts supported on defective Al 2 O 3 −CeO 2 for lean methane oxidation. Ceria was immobilized on the coordinatively unsaturated Al 3+ penta sites of γ‐alumina activated by pre‐reduction to fabricate hybrid‐oxide support (abbreviated as RAl 2 O 3 −CeO 2 ), and then Pd precursor was uniformly deposited on the defective surface. Such a RAl 2 O 3 −CeO 2 interface can effectively upgrade the dispersion of deposited palladium species and improve the concentration of reactive oxygen species owing to strong electronic interactions, invoking a superior catalytic activity for lean methane oxidation. After loading 1.0 wt% palladium, Pd/RAl 2 O 3 −CeO 2 exhibited a 90 % methane conversion at 328 °C under the space velocity of 60,000 mL g −1 h −1 , far lower than that of bare 1.0 wt% Pd/RAl 2 O 3 (400 °C). In addition, Pd/RAl 2 O 3 −CeO 2 catalyst showed an excellent hydrothermal stability under the harsh conditions (600 °C, water vapor)for 120 h without obvious deactivation. The reaction pathway of total methane combustion was elucidated by in situ DRIFTS. The crucial intermediate compositions (carbon oxygenates and carbonate)on Pd/RAl 2 O 3 −CeO 2 surface are more readily oxidized into CO 2 and H 2 O. This work provides an effective interface‐promoted strategy to develop efficient and durable palladium catalysts for many challenging reactions.

Abstract:Allylic alcohols were directly used in Pd-catalyzed allylic alkylations of simple ketones under mild reaction conditions. The reaction proceeded smoothly at 20 degrees C by the concerted action of a Pd catalyst, a pyrrolidine co-catalyst, and a hydrogen-bonding solvent, and does not require any additional reagents. A computational study suggested that methanol plays a crucial role in the formation of the pi-allylpalladium complex by lowering the activation barrier.

Abstract:Abstract Selective reduction of ketone/aldehydes to alcohols is of great importance in green chemistry and chemical engineering. Highly efficient catalysts are still demanded to work under mild conditions, especially at room temperature. Here we present a synergistic function of single-atom palladium (Pd 1 ) and nanoparticles (Pd NPs ) on TiO 2 for highly efficient ketone/aldehydes hydrogenation to alcohols at room temperature. Compared to simple but inferior Pd 1 /TiO 2 and Pd NPs /TiO 2 catalysts, more than twice activity enhancement is achieved with the Pd 1+NPs /TiO 2 catalyst that integrates both Pd 1 and Pd NPs on mesoporous TiO 2 supports, obtained by a simple but large-scaled spray pyrolysis route. The synergistic function of Pd 1 and Pd NPs is assigned so that the partial Pd 1 dispersion contributes enough sites for the activation of C=O group while Pd NPs site boosts the dissociation of H 2 molecules to H atoms. This work not only contributes a superior catalyst for ketone/aldehydes hydrogenation, but also deepens the knowledge on their hydrogenation mechanism and guides people to engineer the catalytic behaviors as needed.

Abstract:Comprehensive Summary A new approach to allylic alkylation is realized using an atomically dispersed palladium catalyst (Pd1/TiO2‐EG). Unlike conventional methods that require derivation of substrates and utilization of additives, this method allows direct allylic alkylation from allylic alcohols, producing H2O as the sole by‐product. The catalyst's high efficiency is attributed to the local hydrogen bonding at the organic‐inorganic interface (Pd‐EG interface), facilitating hydroxyl group activation for η3 π‐allyl complex formation. The system demonstrates successful direct C‐O and C‐C coupling reactions with high selectivity, requiring no additives. This study highlights the potential of supported atomically dispersed catalysts for greener and more efficient catalysis, meanwhile offers unique insights into the distinct behavior of atomically dispersed catalysts in comparison to homogeneous or nanoparticle‐based catalysts. Highly Active Bimetallic Single-Atom Alloy PdAg Catalysts on Cerium-Containing Supports in the Hydrogenation of Alkynes to Alkenes

Abstract:A study of a series of single-atom-alloy catalysts Pd 1 Ag 3 /Al 2 O 3 , Pd 1 Ag 3 /CeO 2 –Al 2 O 3 , and Pd 1 Ag 3 /CeO 2 –ZrO 2 in the selective hydrogenation of diphenylacetylene (DPA) showed a significant (five-fold) increase in activity for the PdAg 3 /CeO 2 –ZrO 2 sample in comparison with that of Pd 1 Ag 3 /Al 2 O 3 . It was especially noted that the increase in activity was not accompanied by a decrease in the selectivity for the target product. This catalytic behavior can be explained by two factors: (1) a more than twofold increase in the dispersity of the PdAg 3 /CeO 2 –ZrO 2 catalyst and (2) a change in the electronic state of the nanoparticles, as determined from the results of an IR-spectroscopic study of adsorbed CO. The retention of the high selectivity of the synthesized catalysts indicated the stability of the structure of Pd 1 monoatomic sites in the catalysts prepared by deposition on Ce-containing supports, which was also confirmed by the IR spectroscopy of adsorbed CO. The experimental results indicate that Ce-containing supports are promising for the synthesis of catalysts for the selective hydrogenation of substituted alkynes.

Abstract:A novel palladium-doped ceria and carbon core-sheath nanowire network (Pd-CeO2@C CSNWN) is synthesized by a template-free and surfactant-free solvothermal process, followed by high temperature carbonization. This hierarchical network serves as a new class of catalyst support to enhance the activity and durability of noble metal catalysts for alcohol oxidation reactions. Its supported Pd nanoparticles, Pd/(Pd-CeO2@C CSNWN), exhibit >9 fold increase in activity toward the ethanol oxidation over the state-of-the-art Pd/C catalyst, which is the highest among the reported Pd systems. Moreover, stability tests show a virtually unchanged activity after 1000 cycles. The high activity is mainly attributed to the superior oxygen-species releasing capability of Pd-doped CeO2 nanowires by accelerating the removal of the poisoning intermediate. The unique interconnected one-dimensional core-sheath structure is revealed to facilitate immobilization of the metal catalysts, leading to the improved durability. This core-sheath nanowire network opens up a new strategy for catalyst performance optimization for next-generation fuel cells.
Revealing the Crystal Facet Effect of Ceria in Pd/CeO 2 Catalysts toward the Selective Oxidation of Benzyl Alcohol

Abstract:Ceria is an excellent catalyst or support for various oxidation reactions due to its abundant oxygen vacancies and strong metal–support interactions. In this study, ceria nanocrystals were hydrothermally prepared with different morphologies (nanorods, nanocubes, and nano-octahedra) and corresponding exposed crystal facets [(110), (100), and (111)]. The Pd/CeO2 catalysts were synthesized through an impregnation method by applying these ceria nanocrystals as supports. Selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol, involving multiple catalytic steps, was employed as a model reaction to explore the crystal facet effect of ceria on the catalytic activity of various Pd/CeO2 catalysts. The Pd/CeO2 nanorod catalyst delivers superior performance in each individual step, resulting in an improved overall catalytic activity. Specifically, the highest oxygen vacancy concentration and the optimum metal–support synergy observed on the CeO2 (110) surface are feasible to dissociate the benzyl alcohol adsorbent, eliminate α-H, and activate O2. As a consequence, the Pd/CeO2-nanorod catalysts deliver a much higher benzyl alcohol conversion (74%) than Pd/CeO2-nano-octahedra (35%) and Pd/CeO2-nanocubes (28%). This work provides in-depth insight into the crystal facet–performance relationship of CeO2 in the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol and sheds light on the catalyst support design strategy for other multistep reactions.

In this study, ceria nanocrystals were hydrothermally prepared with different morphologies (nanorods, nanocubes, and nano-octahedra) and corresponding exposed crystal facets [(110), (100), and (111)]. The Pd/CeO2 catalysts were synthesized through an impregnation method by applying these ceria nanocrystals as supports. Selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol, involving multiple catalytic steps, was employed as a model reaction to explore the crystal facet effect of ceria on the catalytic activity of various Pd/CeO2 catalysts. The Pd/CeO2 nanorod catalyst delivers superior performance in each individual step, resulting in an improved overall catalytic activity. Specifically, the highest oxygen vacancy concentration and the optimum metal-support synergy observed on the CeO2 (110) surface are feasible to dissociate the benzyl alcohol adsorbent, eliminate alpha-H, and activate O2. As a consequence, the Pd/CeO2-nanorod catalysts deliver a much higher benzyl alcohol conversion (74%) than Pd/CeO2-nano-octahedra (35%) and Pd/CeO2-nanocubes (28%). This work provides in-depth insight into the crystal facet-performance relationship of CeO2 in the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol and sheds light on the catalyst support design strategy for other multistep reactions.
