Abstract:Graphene is an atomically thin, two-dimensional allotrope of carbon with excellent chemical, mechanical, and electronic properties. Recent studies have revealed that using graphene or modified graphene as a catalyst support or metal-free catalyst can result in significant improvement in the catalytic activity, selectivity, reusability and tolerance due to the unique structure of graphene. This review summarized the recent progress on the pre-paration of the graphene-based catalysts and their application in traditional chemical reactions, electrochemical reactions and photochemical catalysis. The perspectives of achieving graphene-based catalysts with high catalytic performance have also been included.

Abstract:Due to their outstanding catalytic properties of high stability, high selectivity, and high activity, single-atom catalysts (SACs) have attracted the attention of research teams worldwide. The synthesis and application breakthroughs of single atom in environmental catalysis have been systematically reviewed in this study. With nearly 100 % atomic utilization and easy separation, single-atom catalysts take into account the advantages of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts. The results show that the common preparation methods of monatomic catalysts include arc discharge, strong electrostatic adsorption (SEA), flame spray pyrolysis (FSP) and atomic layer deposition (ALD). Common single-atom catalyst supports include graphene, zeolites, and oxides. Common anchoring sites for single-atom catalysts include surface atomic sites, doped heteroatom sites, hole sites, defect sites, metal sites, and curvature sites. In addition, this study also reviewed the application of single-atom catalysts in the field of environmental catalysis, focusing on the breakthroughs of single-atom catalysis in solving volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emission control, activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade pollutants, and green energy conversion (GNC). The results show that coordination number and orbital interactions play an important role in the catalytic mechanism of single-atom catalysts. This review indicates that single-atom catalysts have broad application prospects in areas such as air pollution, water pollution, and energy conversion. In addition, the cost, lifespan, loading rate, and secondary pollution of single-atom catalysts will still be issues that require special attention in the future.

Abstract:Although carbon has been widely used in catalytic processes as a support material, very little is known about its function as an active catalyst. The scientific challenge is to achieve a detailed mechanistic understanding of the structural or chemical sites of the carbon that are catalytically active especially because of the very heterogeneous nature of carbon surfaces. This problem is complicated by the fact that there are limited tools to characterize the surface chemical and structural properties of carbon materials. This review highlights recent efforts from our group in utilizing well-defined synthetic nanostructure carbons in which surface properties can be controlled and systematically varied in order to identify their function for oxidative dehydrogenation reactions. Manipulation of exposed edge sites and oxygen functionalities are some of the aspects studied for controlling activity and selectivity on carbon catalysis.

Abstract:Nanotechnology has driven scientific advances in catalytic materials and processes over the past few decades. Unique physicochemical and electronic properties that emerge when materials are engineered from the bulk to the nanoscale have been exploited for a wide range of applications, including environmental remediation such as catalytic pollutant destruction. Recent advances in the catalytic synthesis of fuels and value-added chemicals explore the properties of materials, noble and transition metal catalysts in particular, when they are engineered to be below nanoscale and at the single-atom limit. In addition to the maximized efficiency of atomic utilization due to size reduction, significantly reduced costs and the potential to achieve highly selective catalysis are particularly appealing to the environmental application of single-atom catalysts, overcoming certain limitations that the field has been unable to address with nanotechnology. This critical review, built upon a comprehensive discussion of fundamental properties, synthesis methods, and application examples, evaluates in depth the opportunities and challenges of single-atom catalysts as new frontier materials for environmental remediation applications beyond nanomaterials.

Abstract:Graphdiyne, a sp/sp2‐cohybridized two‐dimensional all‐carbon material, has many unique and fascinating properties of alkyne‐rich structures, large π conjugated system, uniform pores, specific unevenly‐distributed surface charge, and incomplete charge transfer properties provide promising potential in practical applications including catalysis, energy conversion and storage, intelligent devices, life science, photoelectric, etc. These superior advantages have made graphdiyne one of the hottest research frontiers of chemistry and materials science, and produced a series of original and innovative research results in the fundamental and applied research of carbon materials. In recent years, considerable advances have been made toward the development of graphdiyne based multiscale catalysts for nitrogen‐fixation and ammonia synthesis at room temperatures and ambient pressures. This review aims to provide a comprehensive update in regards to the synthesis of graphdiyne‐based multiscale catalysts and their applications in the synthesis of ammonia. The unique features of graphdiyne are highlighted throughout the review. Finally, we conclude by discussing challenges and future perspectives relating to graphdiyne.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts are one of the most energetic frontier research fields of catalysis, which exhibit distinctive performance for diverse chemical reactions due to the unique coordination environment, high atomic utilization, high activity and selectivity. Nevertheless, the size decrease of catalyst particles is accompanied with the sharply increased surface energy, thus ultra-small particles are easy to form aggregation of nanoclusters and cannot maintain the atomic level dispersion. The key factor to protect catalytic sites is to regulate and control the interaction between single atoms and the substrate. As one of the most promising two-dimensional supports to stabilize the isolated metal atoms, graphitic carbon nitride has been widely studied owing to the existence of abundant pyridine-like nitrogen atoms for strongly anchoring metal centers and the distinct structure originating from electron rearrangement caused by the interaction between carbon and neighbor nitrogen atoms. In this review, we systematically generalize the controllable syntheses, theoretical calculations, characterizations and applications of graphitic carbon nitride supported isolated single-atom catalysts, and finally, the prospects and challenges in this emergent field are featured on the basis of current experimental and computational efforts.

Abstract:The development of carbon materials offers the hope for obtaining inexpensive and high-performance alternatives to substitute noble-metal catalysts for their sustainable application. Graphdiyne, the rising-star carbon allotrope, is a big family with many members, and first realized the coexistence of sp- and sp(2) hybridized carbon atoms in a 2D planar structure. Different from the prevailing carbon materials, its nonuniform distribution in the electronic structure and wide tunability in bandgap show many possibilities and special inspirations to construct new-concept metal-free catalysts, and provide many opportunities for achieving a catalytic activity comparable with that of noble-metal catalysts. Herein, the recent progress in synthetic methodologies, theoretical predictions, and experimental investigations of graphdiyne for metal-free catalysts is systematically summarized. Some new perspectives of the opportunities and challenges in developing high-performance graphdiyne-based metal-free catalysts are demonstrated.

Abstract:Graphdiyne (GDY) is regarded as an exceptional candidate to meet the growing demand in many fields due to its rich chemical bonds, highly π‐conjugated structure, uniformly distributed pores, large surface area, and high inhomogeneity of charge distribution. The extensive research efforts bring about a rapid expansion of GDY with a variety of functionalities, which significantly enhance performance including photocatalysis, energy, biomedicine, etc. In this review, the synthetic strategies (in situ and ex situ approaches) that are designed to rationally functionalize GDY, including optimizing their nanostructures by surface/interface engineering with dopants or functional groups (heteroatoms/small molecules/macromolecules), and building up hierarchical GDY‐based heterostructures are highlighted. Theoretical calculations on the structural evolution and electronic characteristics after the functionalization of GDY are briefly discussed. With elaborate functionalization and rational structure engineering, functional GDY applied in a variety of emerging applications (e.g., hydrogen evolution reaction, CO2 reduction reaction, nitrogen reduction reaction, energy storage and conversion, nanophotonics, sensors, biomedical applications, etc.) are comprehensively discussed. Finally, challenges and prospects concerning the future development of GDY‐based nanoarchitectures are also presented.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts are an essential research object in environmental catalysis because of their unique coordination environment, high utilization rate, high activity and selectivity. The dual-atom catalysts have two sets of atomic centers. The atomically dispersed catalysts (ADCs) from single-atom to dual-atom can bridge the gap between heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysts. The key to the ADCs is forming a stable metal single-atomic site between the catalyst and the support. Graphite carbon nitride has the advantages of chemical stability, structural regulation and visible light absorption. It is one of the most promising two-dimensional materials for stabilizing isolated metal atoms. As an advanced heterogeneous catalyst, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) based ADCs have great potential in applying advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) to solve environmental problems. However, the research progress of g-C 3 N 4 based ADCs in AOPs needs to be summarized more comprehensively. In this paper, the preparation, catalytic mechanism, stability analysis and environmental application of these materials are reviewed systematically. Finally, the research progress of g-C 3 N 4 based ADCs and the prospects and challenges of this new field prospect are summarized.

Abstract:Graphdiyne (GDY)-based materials, owing to their unique structure and tunable electronic properties, exhibit great potential in the fields of catalysis, energy, environmental science, and beyond. In particular, GDY/metal oxide hybrid materials (GDY/MOs) have attracted extensive attention in energy and environmental catalysis. The interaction between GDY and metal oxides can increase the number of intrinsic active sites, facilitate charge transfer, and regulate the adsorption and desorption of intermediate species. In this review, we summarize the structure, synthesis, advanced characterization, small molecule activation mechanism and applications of GDY/MOs in energy conversion and environmental remediation. The intrinsic structure–activity relationship and corresponding reaction mechanism are highlighted. In particular, the activation mechanisms of reactant molecules (H 2 O, O 2 , N 2 , etc. ) on GDY/MOs are systemically discussed. Finally, we outline some new perspectives of opportunities and challenges in developing GDY/MOs for efficient energy and environmental catalysis.

Abstract:The supported-metal catalysts are of great importance to the energy-related electrocatalysis, which is regarded as a green and sustainable technology to address energy and environmental issues. The metal size and metal-support interaction can significantly affect the electrocatalytic activity and stability. As a novel two-dimensional (2D) carbon allotrope comprising sp- and sp2-hybridized carbon atoms, graphdiyne (GDY) possesses uniformly distributed pores, naturally created anchoring sites, high electrical conductivity, and good stability, making it as an attractive matrix for supporting metal catalysts. Herein, this review will present a systematical summary on the synthesis of size-controlled metal catalysts from nanoparticles to single atoms anchored on GDY and their applications in energy related electrocatalysis, in which the size effect and confinement effect on electrocatalytic performance will be revealed. We first briefly introduce the emerging synthetic methods for GDY, laying a foundation for the subsequent fabrication of nano-scale GDY-supported metal catalysts. Then the corresponding electrocatalytic applications including hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR), and CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) are elaborately discussed. This review will be helpful for understanding the effect of support-metal interaction on electrocatalytic performance and thereby designing ideal supported-metal catalysts on atomic scale.

Abstract:Graphene quantum dots (GQDs), as a unique member of the nanocarbon family, have become important catalysts for overall water splitting and metal-air batteries because of their high specific surface area, abundant surface chemical reaction sites and high electron mobility. Understanding the fundamental catalytic mechanism of GQDs in heterogeneous catalysis is conducive to the rational design of high performance GQD-based catalysts. This article summarizes current research progress in the synthesis, modification and applications of GQD-based heterogeneous catalysts in overall water splitting, metal-air batteries and other fields. The issues related to the use of GQD-based catalysts in these fields are discussed together with their future development.

Graphdiyne-Supported Single-Atom-Sized Fe Catalysts for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction: DFT Predictions and Experimental Validations

Abstract:Single-atom-sized catalysts (often called single atom catalysts) are highly desired for maximizing the efficiency of metal atom use. However, their synthesis is a major challenge that largely depends on finding an appropriate supporting substrate to achieve a well-defined and highly dispersed single atom. This work demonstrates, based on density functional theory (DFT) predictions and experimental validations, that graphdiyne is a good substrate for anchoring Fe atoms through the formation of covalent Fe–C bonds to produce graphdiyne-supported single-atom-sized Fe catalysts (Fe–graphdiyne catalysts); moreover, this catalyst shows high catalytic activity to oxygen reduction reactions (ORRs) similar to or even slightly better than the precious metal benchmark (commercial 20 wt % Pt/C catalyst). DFT predicts that the O2 molecule can bind with an Fe atom, and the electron transformation process of ORRs occurs through a 4e– pathway. To validate the theoretical predictions, the Fe–graphdiyne catalyst was then synthesized by a reduction of Fe3+ ions adsorbed on a graphdiyne surface in aqueous solution, and its electrocatalytic activities toward ORR were experimentally evaluated in alkaline electrolytes (0.1 M KOH). The electrochemical measurements indicate that the Fe–graphdiyne catalyst can facilitate the 4e– ORR while limiting the 2e– transfer reaction, showing a high 4e– selectivity for ORRs and a good agreement with DFT predictions. The results presented here demonstrate that graphdiyne can provide a unique platform for synthesizing well-defined and uniform single-atom-sized metal catalysts with high catalytic activity toward ORRs.

Abstract:Using electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) to synthesize value-added hydrocarbons provides a useful solution for environmental issues and energy crisis. However, this process is impeded by the low activity and selectivity of electrocatalysts toward targeted products. Employing density functional theory computations, the graphdiyne and holey graphyne supported single-atom catalysts (SACs, M/GDY and M/HGY) are demonstrated to be the promising candidates for the CO2RR. By taking full elemental diversity of metal sites across the periodic table, 25 catalysts are found to effectively activate CO2 and inhibit competitive hydrogen evolution, and 8 of them show higher activity for CH4 production than Cu(211). Remarkably, changing supports are found to greatly affect limiting potentials and reaction pathways, even leading to an "inert-active" transition for some metal centers. The resulting SACs, including Mn/GDY, Co/HGY, Ru/GDY, and Os/GDY, can achieve high activity with low limiting potentials of & AP; -0.22 to -0.58 V. Machine learning enables to identify the critical role of the polarized charge and magnetic moment of metal atoms in affecting the activity. The built machine learning model also shows an interpretable capability to predict the activity of the other types of SACs, offering a great promise to quick screening of high-performance SACs.

Abstract:Due to the expensive price and the low reserve of noble metals in nature, much attention has been paid to single-atom catalysts (SACs)—especially single-atom noble metal catalysts—owing to their maximum atomic utilization and dispersion. The emergence of SACs greatly decreases the amount of precious metals, improves the catalytic activity, and makes the catalytic process progressively economic and sustainable. However, the most remarkable challenge is the active sites and their stability against migration and aggregation under practical conditions. This review article summarizes the preparation strategies of SACs and their catalytic applications for the oxidation of methane, carbon monoxide, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and the reduction of nitrogen oxides. Furthermore, the perspectives and challenges of SACs in future research and practical applications are proposed. It is envisioned that the results summarized in this review will stimulate the interest of more researchers in developing SACs that are effective in catalyzing the reactions related to the environmental pollution control.

Abstract:Transition-metal single-atom catalysts present extraordinary activity per metal atomic site, but suffer from low metal-atom densities (typically less than 5 wt% or 1 at.%), which limits their overall catalytic performance. Here we report a general method for the synthesis of single-atom catalysts with high transition-metal-atom loadings of up to 40 wt% or 3.8 at.%, representing several-fold improvements compared to benchmarks in the literature. Graphene quantum dots, later interweaved into a carbon matrix, were used as a support, providing numerous anchoring sites and thus facilitating the generation of high densities of transition-metal atoms with sufficient spacing between the metal atoms to avoid aggregation. A significant increase in activity in electrochemical CO<sub>2</sub> reduction (used as a representative reaction) was demonstrated on a Ni single-atom catalyst with increased Ni loading.
