Abstract:In this study, we compared a simple bar relaxation (equilibrium type) model to laboratory data on the response of sand bar crests, including changes in its elevation and position, with monochromatic waves and sinusoidal tide level changes. Both the model and observations showed that the bar migrated offshore, and its elevation decreased as the tide fell. The model predicted onshore bar migration with increasing elevation as the tide rose. However, in some cases, the observed elevation of bar crest decreased contrary to predictions, and the decaying bar was even replaced by a newly formed inner bar at times when the tide rose. We also characterized the bar response using data with sand of two different grain sizes and a variety of wave-tide parameter combinations and found that At/Tt (tide amplitude At, tide period Tt), H/T (wave height H, wave period T), and ws (settling velocity) were correlated with the morphological time scale for data that followed the model. Under similar initial bed conditions, cases with a higher AtTtH/Tws2 tended to have longer morphological time scales. Additionally, the model better described cases with a lower At/Tt, lower H/T, and larger ws. It's worth noting that this study is based on limited data, and further research is required to obtain more comprehensive results.
