Abstract:Rapid room-temperature synthesis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is highly desired for industrial implementation and commercialization. Here we find that a (Zn,Cu) hydroxy double salt (HDS) intermediate formed in situ from ZnO particles or thin films enables rapid growth (<1 min) of HKUST-1 (Cu3(BTC)2) at room temperature. The space-time-yield reaches >3 × 10(4) kg·m(-3)·d(-1), at least 1 order of magnitude greater than any prior report. The high anion exchange rate of (Zn,Cu) hydroxy nitrate HDS drives the ultrafast MOF formation. Similarly, we obtained Cu-BDC, ZIF-8, and IRMOF-3 structures from HDSs, demonstrating synthetic generality. Using ZnO thin films deposited via atomic layer deposition, MOF patterns are obtained on pre-patterned surfaces, and dense HKUST-1 coatings are grown onto various form factors, including polymer spheres, silicon wafers, and fibers. Breakthrough tests show that the MOF-functionalized fibers have high adsorption capacity for toxic gases. This rapid synthesis route is also promising for new MOF-based composite materials and applications.
Deciphering Metal–Organic Framework Synthesis from Hydroxy Double Salts: In-Situ Insights Via Synchrotron X‑ray Diffraction and Absorption Spectroscopy

Abstract:Developing rapid room-temperature synthesis is key to sustainable manufacturing of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). Using layered compounds such as hydroxy double salts (HDSs) as precursors significantly promotes the reaction kinetics and lowers the required synthesis temperature. However, limited understanding of the reaction mechanism impedes the further exploration of new routes for MOF synthesis. Here, we report for the first time the use of combined in-situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction and X-ray absorption spectroscopy to monitor the dynamic processes to form MOFs in solution. The conversion from a (Zn,Co) HDS to a mixed-metal zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (mmZIF-8) was chosen as our model reaction. Time-resolved diffraction patterns exclude the presence of intercalated HDS structures with altered d-spacing and any other crystalline intermediate phase during the synthesis. The activation energies of nucleation and growth were found as 25.5 ± 2.5 and 64.0 ± 7.9 kJ·mol–1, respectively. In addition, we captured the evolution of local structures from mixed coordination states in the HDS to tetrahedral coordination in the mmZIF-8. Furthermore, two possible reaction pathways were proposed to account for the fast conversion from HDS to mmZIF-8. The fundamental understanding towards the HDS-based synthesis obtained in this work is expected to guide future development of new fabrication methods for MOF materials.

Abstract:The nanoarchitecture engineering of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is a fascinating but intellectually challenging concept that opens up avenues for both tailoring the properties of MOFs and expanding their applications. Herein, we report the confined growth of ZIF-8 single crystals in a three-dimensionally ordered (3DO) macroporous polystyrene replica and reveal that their growth patterns, morphologies, and nanoarchitectures can be highly engineered using the concentration of the precursor. Impressively, the favorable in situ confined growth enables the successful fabrication of 3DO sphere-assembled ZIF-8 single crystals or 3DO single-crystalline ZIF-8 sphere arrays when a low- or high-concentration precursor solution, respectively, is used as the feedstock. Furthermore, our strategy can be extended to the preparation of other 3DO MOF single crystals, including ZIF-67 and HKUST-1, with similar controllable hierarchical nanoarchitectures. With the successful preparation of a series of diameter-tunable ZIF-8 single-crystalline spheres, we further unravel their interesting size-performance relationship in the Knoevenagle reaction between benzaldehyde and malononitrile, wherein the smallest spheres show the fastest first-order reaction kinetics. This study not only develops a general strategy for engineering the nanoarchitectures of MOF single crystals but also provides fundamental knowledge of the mechanism for the growth of hierarchical single crystals under confined spaces.

Isotope Effect-Enabled Crystal Enlargement in Metal-Organic Frameworks

Abstract:Synthesizing large metal-organic framework (MOF) single crystals has garnered significant research interest, although it is hindered by the fast nucleation kinetics that gives rise to numerous small nuclei. Given the different chemical origins inherent in various types of MOFs, the development of a general approach to enhancing their crystal sizes presents a formidable challenge. Here, we propose a simple isotopic substitution strategy to promote size growth in MOFs by inhibiting nucleation, resulting in a substantial increase in the crystal volume ranging from 1.7- to 165-fold. Impressively, the crystals prepared under optimized conditions by normal approaches can be further enlarged by the isotope effect, yielding the largest MOF single crystal (2.9 cm × 0.48 cm × 0.23 cm) among the one-pot synthesis method. Detailed in situ characterizations reveal that the isotope effect can retard crystallization kinetics, establish a higher nucleation energy barrier, and consequently generate fewer nuclei that eventually grow larger. Compared with the smaller crystals, the isotope effect-enlarged crystal shows 33% improvement in the X-ray dose rate detection limit. This work enriches the understanding of the isotope effect on regulating the crystallization process and provides inspiration for exploring potential applications of large MOF single crystals.

Abstract:Nanosized metal-organic frameworks (nano-MOFs) have shown significant potential across diverse fields, while the challenge of achieving energy- and time-efficient scaling-up synthesis hampers their practical applications. This work presents a cost-effective colloid-milling method that enforces nucleation-growth separation during crystallization for the scalable synthesis of nano-MOFs under ambient conditions. Compared to the static method, the colloid-milling method not only greatly improves the production efficiency by 2 orders of magnitude but also produces smaller nano-MOFs with narrower size distribution that exhibit higher catalytic activity than the larger-sized ones. This work offers a promising option for the large-scale production of nano-MOFs.

Abstract:Developing a reliable method for constructing mesoporous metal–organic framework (MOF) with single-crystalline form remains a challenging task despite numerous efforts. This study presents a solvent-mediated assembly method for fabricating zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIFs) single-crystal nanoparticles with well-defined micro-mesoporous structure using polystyrene-block-polyethylene oxide diblock copolymer micelles as a soft-template. The precise control of particle sizes, ranging from 85 nm to 1.2 μm, is achieved through the regulation of nucleation and crystal growth rates, while maintaining consistent pore diameters in mesoporous nanoparticles and a rhombohedral dodecahedron morphology. Furthermore, this study presents a robust platform for nanoarchitecturing to prepare hierarchically porous materials (e.g., core-shell and hollow structures) using the micro-mesoporous ZIF series, including microporous ZIF@mesoporous ZIF, hollow mesoporous ZIF, and mesoporous ZIF@mesoporous ZIF. Such a multimodal pore design, ranging from microporous to micro/mesoporous and further micro/meso/macroporous, provides significant evidence for the future possibility of MOF structural design, which has not yet been presented.

Abstract:Abstract Metal-organic frameworks (MOF) are an emerging class of microporous materials with promising applications. MOF nanocrystals, and their assembled super-structures, can display unique properties and reactivities when compared with their bulk analogues. MOF nanostructures of 0-D, 2-D, and 3-D dimensions can be routinely obtained by controlling reaction conditions and ligand additives, while formation of 1-D MOF nanocrystals (nanowires and nanorods) and super-structures has been relatively rare. We report here a facile templated interfacial synthesis methodology for the preparation of a series of 1-D MOF nano- and micro-structures with precisely controlled shapes and sizes. Specifically, by applying track-etched polycarbonate (PCTE) membranes as the templates and at the oil/water interface, we rapidly and reproducibly synthesize zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) and ZIF-67 nano- and micro structures of sizes ranging from 10 nm to 20 μm. We also identify a size confinement effect on MOF crystal growth, which leads to single crystals under the most restricted conditions and inter-grown polycrystals at larger template pore sizes, as well as surface directing effects that influence the crystallographic preferred orientation. Our findings provide a potentially generalizable method for controlling the size, morphology, and crystal orientations of MOF nanomaterials, as well as offering fundamental understanding into MOF crystal growth mechanisms.

Abstract:Design of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with elobrate structural features is of great siginicance for their applications with improved performances. In this work, we report the construction of unique zinc-based zeolite imidazole framework (ZIF-8) microrings via an anisotropic growth-etching route. The synthesis relies on the anisotropic deposition of ZIF-8 crystals on the edge with coordinatively unsaturated Zn2+ of leaf-like ZIF (ZIF-L) nanosheets and subsequent selective etching of alkaline unstable ZIF-L. Furthermore, functional carbon materials with ring-like structure can be prepared by pyrolysis of ZIF-8 microrings as precursors, exhibiting enhanced oxygen reduction reaction performance than the traditional ZIF-8 derived counterparts. Our work may pave the way for the design of MOFs with sophisticated micro/nanostructures.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks based on zirconium or hafnium possess tantalizing commercial prospects due to their high stability but require a long reaction time to form crystals. The fast synthesis of uniform Zr-, Hf-MOF nanocrystals at scale is of key importance in the potential commercial application of MOFs. In this work, we have developed a versatile strategy through controlling the hydrolysis and nucleation of metal salts in the presence of acetic acid and water; up to 24 grams of UiO-66-NH2 nanocrystals with a uniform octahedron could be synthesized within 15 minutes using a one step method. The current synthetic strategy could be extended to other Zr-, Hf-MOF nanocrystals [UiO-66-Fast, UiO-66-(OH)(2)-Fast, UiO-66-2,6-NDC-Fast, UiO-67-Fast, BUT-12-Fast, PCN-222-Ni-Fast, PCN-222-Co-Fast, Hf-UiO-66-Fast, Hf-UiO-66-NH2-Fast, Hf-UiO-66-(OH)(2)-Fast, Hf-UiO-66-2,6-NDC-Fast and Hf-BUT-12-Fast]. Significantly, when noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) are introduced into MOF precursors, NPs encapsulated in MOFs with excellent dispersion have also been obtained and show outstanding performance in catalysis. This facile procedure is expected to pave the way to expand the commercial applications of MOFs.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have gained significant scientific interest due to their wide-ranging applications across various disciplines. Precisely controlling the crystal size of MOFs plays a pivotal role in enhancing their performance for practical applications. Nevertheless, achieving the rational synthesis of MOFs with desired size distributions remains a formidable challenge. In this research, we elucidate the crystallization mechanism of MOFs and propose an enlightening approach to systematically synthesize MOFs with diverse size distributions. Using MIL-88A as a case study, we uncover its crystallization mechanism characterized as oriented assembling and Ostwald ripening. Our investigation reveals that the ratio of the assembling rate to the ripening rate, denoted as VA/VR, exerts a profound influence on the resulting size distribution of MOFs. Specifically, higher VA/VR values yield both larger average sizes and increased standard deviation in the size distribution. We introduce VA/VR as the size variation factor and demonstrate its efficacy as a guiding principle for tailoring the synthesis of MIL-88A with distinct size distributions. Furthermore, we showcase the versatility of the size variation factor VA/VR by applying it successfully to the controlled synthesis of other MOFs, including MOF-14 and HKUST-1. These findings offer profound insights into the fundamental principles governing MOFs crystallization, paving the way for more effective and precise synthesis methodologies.
Controlling the Mechanism of Nucleation and Growth Enables Synthesis of UiO‐66 Metal‐Organic Framework with Desired Macroscopic Properties

Abstract:By combining in situ X-ray diffraction, Zr K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy and 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, we show that the properties of the final MOF are influenced by H2O and HCl via affecting the nucleation and crystal growth at the molecular level. The nucleation implies hydrolysis of monomeric zirconium chloride complexes into zirconium-oxo species, and this process is promoted by H2O and inhibited by HCl, allowing to control crystal size by adjusting H2O/Zr and HCl/Zr ratios. The rate-determining step of crystal growth is represented by the condensation of monomeric and oligomeric zirconium-oxo species into clusters, or nodes, with the structure identical to that in secondary building units (SBU) of UiO-66 framework. The rapid crystallization in the absence of HCl leads to formation of defective secondary building units with missing zirconium atoms, providing a pathway to control the number of defects in UiO-66 crystals. Remarkably, we have shown that assembling of the metal nodes and linkers into the UiO-66 structure is not the rate-limiting step, and the degree of deprotonation of the linker has no direct effect on the crystallization kinetics or crystal size of product.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have great potential for a wide range of applications given their flexible structures and pore networks. Morphology control directly affects the properties and applications of MOFs. Unfortunately, governing the desired dimension and shape of MOFs is often limited by macrosystems that require organic solvents and additives while including time-consuming treatments. Microfluidics as a practical alternative provides precise manipulation of microscale liquid, has the potential to be a superior platform for directed crystal generation. Here we reported an AC electrokinetic (EK) mixing-assisted micro-synthesis method, which allowed the actively controlled synthesis of MOFs in aqueous phase. The effects of flow rate, molar-ratio of precursors, electric field intensity, and frequency on the synthesis of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) were investigated. Using this method, the particle size of ZIF-8 were varied, and the geometry were changed between flower-like polyhedra, cubes, spheres, and rhombic dodecahedra. Furthermore, the synthesized various ZIF-8 provide different levels of immobilization sites based on their morphological deviations. The flower-like cubic ZIF-8 had defect structures and exhibited a maximum horseradish peroxidase (HRP) loading of about 16%. The study provides a simple, green and reliable tuning strategy for breaking the single morphological form of MOFs to enhance their physicochemical properties.

Abstract:Unlike inorganic crystals, metal-organic frameworks do not have a well-developed nanostructure library, and establishing their appropriately diverse and complex architectures remains a major challenge. Here, we demonstrate a general route to control metal-organic framework structure by a solvent-assisted ligand exchange approach. Thirteen different types of metal-organic framework structures have been prepared successfully. To demonstrate a proof of concept application, we used the obtained metal-organic framework materials as precursors for synthesizing nanoporous carbons and investigated their electrochemical Na + storage properties. Due to the unique architecture, the one-dimensional nanoporous carbon derived from double-shelled ZnCo bimetallic zeolitic imidazolate framework nanotubes exhibits high specific capacity as well as superior rate capability and cycling stability. Our study offers an avenue for the controllable preparation of well-designed meta-organic framework structures and their derivatives, which would further broaden the application opportunities of metal-organic framework materials.
A General Strategy for Instantaneous and Continuous Synthesis of Ultrasmall Metal-Organic Framework Nanoparticles

Abstract:Ultrasmall metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) may generate unique properties to expand the scope of applications. However, the synthesis is still a great challenge. Herein, we propose a strategy to synthesize ultrasmall MOFs by high gravity technology. With the aid of tremendous intensification of molecular mixing and mass transfer in high-gravity field, six typical MOFs were obtained instantaneously in a continuous way. These samples are monodispersed with sub-5 nm in size, smaller than the previously reported values and even close to the length of one crystal unit cell. As a proof-of-concept, catalytic activity for Knoevenagel reaction can be significantly enhanced using ultrasmall ZIF-8. Conversion time of benzaldehyde was decreased by 94 % or 75 % compared to those using conventional or hierarchically porous ZIF-8. More importantly, this approach is readily scalable with the highest space-time yield for nano-MOFs, which may promote the convenient synthesis and practical applications of ultrasmall MOFs in large-scale.

Abstract:With well-defined porous structures and dimensions, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can function as versatile templates for the growth of metallic nanostructures with precisely controlled shapes and sizes. Using MOFs as templates, metallic nanostructures can be grown without the need of bulky surfactants and thus preserve their intrinsic surface. Additionally, the high surface area of MOFs can also ensure that the surface of the template metallic nanostructures is readily accessible, which is critical for the proper function of catalysts or sensors. The hybrid metal@MOF structures have been demonstrated to exhibit useful properties not found in either component separately. Here we report the growth of ultrafine metallic nanowires inside one-dimensional MOF pores with well-controlled shape and size. Our study shows that solvent selection plays an important role in controlling precursor loading and the reduction rate inside the MOF pores for the formation of the nanowires. The growth of the well-aligned, ultrathin nanowires was monitored and characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, UV-vis spectroscopy, fluorescence studies, and Brunauer-Emmet-Teller surface area analysis.
Self-condensation-assisted chemical vapour deposition growth of atomically two-dimensional MOF single-crystals

Abstract:Abstract Two-dimensional metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have a wide variety of applications in molecular separation and other emerging technologies, including atomically thin electronics. However, due to the inherent fragility and strong interlayer interactions, high-quality MOF crystals of atomic thickness, especially isolated MOF crystal monolayers, have not been easy to prepare. Here, we report the self-condensation-assisted chemical vapour deposition growth of atomically thin MOF single-crystals, yielding monolayer single-crystals of poly[Fe(benzimidazole) 2 ] up to 62 μm in grain sizes. By using transmission electron microscopy and high-resolution atomic force microscopy, high crystallinity and atomic-scale single-crystal structure are verified in the atomically MOF flakes. Moreover, integrating such MOFs with MoS 2 to construct ultrathin van der Waals heterostructures is achieved by direct growth of atomically MOF single-crystals onto monolayer MoS 2 , and enables a highly selective ammonia sensing. These demonstrations signify the great potential of the method in facilitating the development of the fabrication and application of atomically thin MOF crystals.

Abstract:Methods to grow large crystals provide the foundation for material science and technology. Here we demonstrate single crystal homoepitaxy of a metal-organic framework (MOF) built of zinc, acetate and terephthalate ions, that encapsulate arrays of octahedral zinc dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) complex cations within its one-dimensional (1D) channels. The three-dimensional framework is built of two-dimensional Zn-terephthalate square lattices interconnected by anionic acetate pillars through diatomic zinc nodes. The charge of the framework is neutralized by the 1D arrays of Zn(DMSO)6 2+ cations that fill every second 1D channel of the framework. It is demonstrated that the repeatable and scalable epitaxy allows square cuboids of the MOF to grow stepwise to sizes in the centimeter range. The continuous growth with no size limits can be attributed to the ionic nature of the anionic framework with cationic 1D molecular fillers. These findings pave the way for epitaxial growth of bulky crystals of MOFs.
