Abstract:Highly efficient electrochemical CO2-to-CO conversion is a promising approach for achieving carbon neutrality. While nonmetallic carbon electrocatalysts have shown potential for CO2-to-CO utilization in H-type cells, achieving efficient conversion in flow cells at an industrial scale remains challenging. In this study, we present a cost-effective synthesis strategy for preparing ultrathin 2D carbon nanosheet catalysts through simple amine functionalization. The optimized catalyst, NCNs-2.5, demonstrates exceptional CO selectivity with a maximum Faradaic efficiency of 98% and achieves a high current density of 55 mA cm-2 in a flow cell. Furthermore, the catalyst exhibits excellent long-term stability, operating continuously for 50 h while maintaining a CO selectivity above 90%. The superior catalytic activity of NCNs-2.5 is attributed to the presence of amine-N active sites within the carbon lattice structure. This work establishes a foundation for the rational design of cost-effective nonmetallic carbon catalysts as sustainable alternatives to metals in energy conversion systems.
Synergistic Effects of Amine Functional Groups and Enriched-Atomic-Iron Sites in Carbon Dots for Industrial-Current-Density CO2 Electroreduction

Abstract:Metal phthalocyanine molecules with Me-N-4 centers have shown promise in electrocatalytic CO2 reduction (eCO(2)R) for CO generation. However, iron phthalocyanine (FePc) is an exception, exhibiting negligible eCO(2)R activity due to a higher CO2 to *COOH conversion barrier and stronger *CO binding energy. Here, amine functional groups onto atomic-Fe-rich carbon dots (Af-Fe-CDs) are introduced via a one-step solvothermal molecule fusion approach. Af-Fe-CDs feature well-defined Fe-N-4 active sites and an impressive Fe loading (up to 8.5 wt%). The synergistic effect between Fe-N-4 active centers and electron-donating amine functional groups in Af-Fe-CDs yielded outstanding CO2-to-CO conversion performance. At industrial-relevant current densities exceeding 400 mA cm(-2) in a flow cell, Af-Fe-CDs achieved >92% selectivity, surpassing state-of-the-art CO2-to-CO electrocatalysts. The in situ electrochemical FTIR characterization combined with theoretical calculations elucidated that Fe-N-4 integration with amine functional groups in Af-Fe-CDs significantly reduced energy barriers for *COOH intermediate formation and *CO desorption, enhancing eCO(2)R efficiency. The proposed synergistic effect offers a promising avenue for high-efficiency catalysts with elevated atomic-metal loadings.

Abstract:The electrochemical conversion of CO2 into high value-added hydrocarbon products provides a promising path to reduce the dependence on fossil energy and close carbon cycle. Cu-based catalyst is so far the only material that can effectively realize this process, limiting the optional catalysts for industrial application. Therefore, it is urgent to design other strategies to boost hydrocarbon products beyond Cu-based materials. Here, the N x C shell is constructed on the surface of Ag nanoparticle core (core–shell structure Ag@N x C) to boost the formation of CH4 and CH2CH2. The N x C shell does not modify the electronic property of Ag but prolongs the residence time of the CO intermediate to enhance the C–C coupling and deep reduction, which are proved by in situ ATR-SEIRAS. In addition, the activated H2O molecules could provide sufficient adsorbed H to enhance the further reduction of the carbonaceous intermediate during the CO2 reduction reaction. As a result, the Faradaic efficiency (FE) of the hydrogen evolution reaction is enhanced over the Ag@N x C-2 catalyst (∼12% at −1.4 V vs RHE), and the FEs of CH4 and CH2CH2 are significantly enhanced (above 43.8 and 8.4%, respectively). Our findings provide a strategy to achieve the conversion of CO2 into hydrocarbon products over non-Cu-based catalysts.

Abstract:We report our facile and efficient approach for synthesizing Co-Fe alloy based oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts, in which alloy nanoparticles are encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon nanostructures. The catalysts with high hierarchical porosities are fabricated at an appropriate temperature of 775 degrees C without a further acid leaching treatment after pyrolysis due to the use of ZnO nanoparticles as auto -removable templates. Co/Fe atomic ratio is found to greatly influence the ORR catalytic activity. The catalyst with Co/Fe = 1 exhibits the best catalytic performance by showing an ORR onset potential of 0.99 V and a half-wave potential of 0.87 V (vs. RHE) in 0.1 M KOH, as well as 0.98 V and 0.83 V (vs. RHE) in 0.5 M H2SO4, better than or approaching the performance presented by a commercial 28.6 wt% Pt/C catalyst. The Zn-air battery using the synthesized CoFe@N-C catalyst delivers a higher power density at ambient conditions by air-breathing than the one using the 28.6 wt% Pt/C catalyst. Relatively higher atomic concentrations of both Fe and Co as well as more graphitic nitrogen in the surface of CoFe@N-C detected by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) may account for its excellent ORR catalytic activities both in alkaline and acidic en-vironments.
Easily constructed porous silver films for efficient catalytic CO2 reduction and Zn-CO2 batteries

Abstract:For the electroreduction of carbon dioxide into high value-added chemicals, highly active and selective catalysts are crucial, and metallic silver is one of the most intriguing candidate materials available at a reasonable cost. Herein, through a novel two-step operation of Ag paste/SBA-15 coating and HF etching, porous silver films on a commercial carbon paper with a waterproofer (p-Ag/CP) could be easily fabricated on a large scale as highly efficient carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) electrocatalysts with a CO Faraday efficiency (FECO) as high as 96.7% at -1.0 V vs. the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), and it still reaches up to 90% FECO over applied potentials ranging from -0.8 to -1.1 V vs. the RHE. Meanwhile, the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) utilizing the p-Ag/CP catalyst has achieved a current density, FECO, and stability of ∼60 mA cm-2, >91%, and 11 h, respectively. Furthermore, the assembled aqueous Zn-CO2 battery using p-Ag/CP cathode yielded a peak power density of 0.34 mW cm-2, 75 charge-discharge cycles for 25 h, and 64% FECO at 2.5 mA cm-2. Compared with flat Ag/CP, the significant enhancement in the CO2RR activity of p-Ag/CP was mainly attributed to the distinctive porous structure and an improved three-phase boundary, which is capable of inducing the stabilization of *COOH intermediates, increased active specific surface areas, fast electron transfer kinetic and mass transportation. Further, theoretical calculations revealed that p-Ag/CP possessed an optimized energy barrier for *COOH intermediates.
Facile Synthesis of the Amorphous Carbon Coated Fe-N-C Nanocatalyst with Efficient Activity for Oxygen Reduction Reaction in Acidic and Alkaline Media

Abstract:With the assistance of surfactant, Fe nanoparticles are supported on g-C3N4 nanosheets by a simple one-step calcination strategy. Meanwhile, a layer of amorphous carbon is coated on the surface of Fe nanoparticles during calcination. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and inductively coupled plasma (ICP) were used to characterize the morphology, structure, and composition of the catalysts. By electrochemical evaluate methods, such as linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) and cyclic voltammetry (CV), it can be found that Fe25-N-C-800 (calcinated in 800 °C, Fe loading content is 5.35 wt.%) exhibits excellent oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity and selectivity. In 0.1 M KOH (potassium hydroxide solution), compared with the 20 wt.% Pt/C, Fe25-N-C-800 performs larger onset potential (0.925 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)) and half-wave potential (0.864 V vs. RHE) and limits current density (2.90 mA cm−2, at 400 rpm). In 0.1 M HClO4, it also exhibits comparable activity. Furthermore, the Fe25-N-C-800 displays more excellent stability and methanol tolerance than Pt/C. Therefore, due to convenience synthesis strategy and excellent catalytic activity, the Fe25-N-C-800 will adapt to a suitable candidate for non-noble metal ORR catalyst in fuel cells.

Accelerating Proton and Electron Transfer Enables Highly Active Fe─N─C Catalyst for Electrochemical CO 2 Reduction

Abstract:Abstract Atomically dispersed Fe─N─C catalysts display great potential for efficient CO production in the field of electrochemical CO 2 reduction (ECR), but still suffer from unsatisfactory activity limited by the slow proton and electron transfer during the ECR process. Here, a superior Fe─N─C electrocatalyst is designed by anchoring the individual FeN 4 sites and Fe nanoparticles onto highly conductive carbon nanotubes. The resultant catalyst displays a commendable CO partial current density of 16.01 mA cm −2 with a turnover frequency of 3519.6 h −1 at −0.65 V in an H‐type cell, and also exhibits CO selectivity > 90% under high current density over 120 mA cm −2 in a flow cell. This remarkable activity exceeds a host of previously reported Fe─N─C catalysts. The findings indicate that the carbon nanotube facilitates CO production due to its strong capability of electron transport and charge transfer. In situ spectroscopic analysis, controlled experiments, and theoretical calculations reveal that Fe nanoparticles effectively promote water dissociation and the subsequent protonation step, accelerate the formation of * COOH intermediate, and thus greatly enhance the ECR activity.

Amorphous Copper‐modified gold interface promotes selective CO2 electroreduction to CO

Abstract:Electroreduction of CO 2 into valuable chemicals exhibits promising application potentials. Herein, a kind of nano‐porous AuCu foam which possesses amorphous copper (Cu)‐modified gold (Au) interface was designed for highly selective electroreduction CO 2 into CO. As‐obtained Au 0.95 Cu 0.05 foam exhibits a Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 99.5% for CO with a current density of 31.3 mA cm ‐2 . Compared with other Au‐based electrocatalysts, Au 0.95 Cu 0.05 foam shows a lower overpotential of 240 mV. The improvements in activity and selectivity of the AuCu foam might be attributed to the synergistic effect between the highly dispersed amorphous Cu and the matrix of Au. Detailed characterization indicates that the twisty nanowire morphology imparts multiple reactive sites on the electrode surface. The study demonstrates that amorphous Cu on the AuCu foam surface can boost CO 2 activation by modifying the surface geometry and electronic structure. This finding provides a new strategy of modifying the metal interface to construct electrocatalyst.

Abstract:An efficient and selective catalyst is in urgent need for carbon dioxide electroreduction and silver is one of the promising candidates with affordable costs. Here we fabricated large-scale vertically standing Ag nanowire arrays with high crystallinity and electrical conductivity as carbon dioxide electroreduction catalysts by a simple nanomolding method that was usually considered not feasible for metallic crystalline materials. A great enhancement of current densities and selectivity for CO at moderate potentials was achieved. The current density for CO ( jco) of Ag nanowire array with 200 nm in diameter was more than 2500 times larger than that of Ag foil at an overpotential of 0.49 V with an efficiency over 90%. The origin of enhanced performances are attributed to greatly increased electrochemically active surface area (ECSA) and higher intrinsic activity compared to those of polycrystalline Ag foil. More low-coordinated sites on the nanowires which can stabilize the CO2 intermediate better are responsible for the high intrinsic activity. In addition, the impact of surface morphology that induces limited mass transportation on reaction selectivity and efficiency of nanowire arrays with different diameters was also discussed.

Abstract:Highly efficient CO2 electroreduction is achieved over silver penetration electrode based on the synergetic combination of the unique penetration effect as well as the tuned electronic structure by reconstructed nanosheet‐standing shell, with a high CO faradaic efficiency of 97% at an ultra‐high current density of 2.0 A cm−2 and sustained performance for continuously >200 h operation. Electroreduction of CO2 to CO is a promising route for greenhouse gas resource utilization, but it still suffers from impractical current density and poor durability. Here, a nanosheet shell (NS) vertically standing on the Ag hollow fiber (NS@Ag HF) surface formed by electrochemical surface reconstruction is reported. As‐prepared NS@Ag HF as a gas penetration electrode exhibited a high CO faradaic efficiency of 97% at an ultra‐high current density of 2.0 A cm−2 with a sustained performance for continuous >200 h operation. The experimental and theoretical studies reveal that promoted surface electronic structures of NS@Ag HF by the nanosheets not only suppress the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction but also facilitate the CO2 reduction kinetics. This work provides a feasible strategy for fabricating robust catalysts for highly efficient and stable CO2 reduction.

Efficient CO2 Electroreduction over Silver Hollow Fiber Electrode

Abstract:Electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 to fuels and chemicals is one of the most attractive routes for CO2 utilization. However, low efficiency and poor stability restrict the practical application of most conventional electrocatalysts. Here, a silver hollow fiber electrode is presented as a novel self-supported gas diffusion electrode for efficient and stable CO2 electroreduction to CO. A CO faradaic efficiency of over 92% at current densities of above 150 mA∙cm−2 is achieved in 0.5 M KHCO3 for over 100 h, which is comparable to the most outstanding Ag-based electrocatalysts. The electrochemical results suggest the excellent electrocatalytic performance of silver hollow fiber electrode is attributed to the unique pore structures providing abundant active sites and favorable mass transport, which not only suppresses the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) but also facilitates the CO2 reduction kinetics.

Abstract:Ag clusters on N‐doped carbon were employed for CO2 reduction, which show a maximum CO Faradaic efficiency of 94 % at −0.7 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode and good stability. The N defects coordinated by Ag are confirmed to be active sites with low CO2 reduction energy barrier outcompeting hydrogen evolution. Electrochemical CO2 reduction is an environmentally sustainable way for CO2 conversion and utilization, the development of which needs highly efficient catalysts. Ag‐based materials are one kind of electrocatalyst that are catalytically active for CO2 reduction to CO. In this work, Ag clusters were fabricated on nitrogen‐doped porous carbon nanomaterials by a high‐temperature annealing method. The well‐dispersion of Ag sites on nitrogen‐doped carbons (Ag/NC) promoted CO production. As a result, Ag/NC showed a maximum Faradaic efficiency of 94 % at −0.7 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (vs RHE) at room temperature. In addition, Ag/NC showed good CO2 reduction stability, and the CO Faradaic efficiency remained stable at about 90 % at −0.7 V vs RHE for 12 h. Density functional theory calculation indicated that the cooperation of Ag and N‐dopings effectively reduced the activation energy barrier of CO2 reduction relative to hydrogen evolution reaction and thus effectively promoted the electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 molecules to CO. This method provides a new idea for the synthesis of CO2 reduction catalysts with higher activity, selectivity and stability.

Abstract:Efficient electroreduction of CO 2 into CO and other chemicals turns greenhouse gases into fuels and value-added chemicals, holding great promise for a closed carbon cycle and the alleviation of climate changes. However, there are still challenges in the large-scale application of CO 2 electroreduction due to the sluggish kinetics. Herein we develop a self-assembly strategy to synthesize a highly efficient CO 2 reduction electrocatalyst with atomically dispersed Ni-N 4 active centers anchored on polymer-derived mesh-like N-doped carbon nanofibers (Ni-N 4 /NC). The Ni-N 4 /NC exhibits high selectivity for CO 2 reduction reaction with CO Faradaic efficiency (CO FE) above 90% over a wide potential range from −0.6 to −1.0 V vs. RHE. The catalyst reaches a maximum CO FE up to 98.4% at −0.8 V with a TOF of 1.28 × 10 5 h −1 and Tafel slope of 113 mV·dec −1 . The catalyst also exhibits remarkable stability, with little change in current density and CO FE over a 10-hour durability test at −0.8 V vs. RHE. This method provides a new route for the synthesis of highly efficient CO 2 reduction electrocatalyst.

Abstract:Silver (Ag) is a typical catalyst for CO2 electroreduction. To improve the CO faradaic efficiency, ZIF-8 supported thiol-capped Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs) of about 3.9 nm were facilely synthesized by reducing Ag + in ZIF-8 suspension in the presence of thiol-containing mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) molecules. MPA can induce the monodisperse Ag NPs formation, cap on the surface of Ag NPs and immobilize on ZIF-8 through coordinating with the unsaturated Zn 2+ cations. The Ag/ZIF-8 can efficiently reduce CO2 to CO with a maximum CO faradaic efficiency of 92.3% at the potential of −0.88 V (vs. RHE), higher than that of ZIF-8 and Ag/C. The performance improvement in CO2 electroreduction over Ag/ZIF-8 is probably attributed to the small-size of Ag NPs and the synergistic effect between Ag NPs and ZIF-8.

Abstract:Oxide-derived silver catalysts containing stable oxygen species have been proved to be efficient for the electrochemical reduction reaction of CO2 (CO2RR) due to their enhanced binding energy to *COOH intermediate. Here we developed a hydrothermal decomposition method to synthesize silver nanoparticles (NPs) supported on carbon nitride (Ag/g-C3N4) from silver oxide (Ag2O) precursor. The obtained Ag/g-C3N4 electrocatalyst is capable of producing CO at a low onset overpotential (190 mV), and exhibits a high Faraday efficiency (FE) up to 94.0% at –0.7 V vs RHE along with a mass activity of 45.7 mA/mg. The improved electrochemical performance is attributed to the ultra-stable oxygen species derived from the incomplete decomposition of Ag2O and coexisted with Ag NPs in the final Ag/g-C3N4 composite. The presence and durability of oxygen species were verified from transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Ag MNN Auger spectra, and temperature-programmed reduction (TPR) measurements. The strong interaction between Ag NPs and g-C3N4 substrate via the Ag-N bonding alters the rate-determining step (RDS) of CO2RR from the electron transfer (CO2 to*CO2 •− ) to the proton transfer (*CO2 •− to *COOH) process.

Abstract:Selective conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) to a reusable form of carbon via electrochemical reduction has attracted intensive interest for the storage of renewable energy. However, the achievement of efficient bulk monolithic electrocatalysts still remains a challenge. Herein, a facile oxidative etching of the Au20Cu80 alloy was developed for the synthesis of a monolithic nanoporous core–shell structured AuCu3@Au electrode, which showed a faradaic efficiency (FE) of 97.27% with a partial current density of 5.3 mA cm−2 at −0.6 V vs. RHE for the production of CO. The FE value is about 1.45 times higher than that over the Au nanocatalyst. Unlike single nanoporous Au, AuCu3@Au maintained an excellent performance in a broad potential window. Furthermore, a 23 cm long nanoporous AuCu3@Au bulk electrode with good ductility was prepared, over which the active current reached up to 37.2 mA with a current density of 10.78 mA cm−2 at −0.7 V vs. RHE, pushing the reduction of CO2 to industrialization. The unsaturated coordination environment with a coordination number of 8.2 over the shell gold and curved interface determined this high electrocatalytic performance. Density functional theory calculations suggested that the double-dentate adsorption structure in the AuCu3@Au catalyst effectively improves the stability of the *COOH intermediate. The density of states indicates that the introduction of Cu causes the d-band-centre of AuCu3@Au to move toward the Fermi level, directly bonding with *COOH. Therefore, the adsorption of *COOH on the surface of the AuCu3@Au catalyst is strengthened, facilitating the formation of CO. This work opens an avenue to achieve self-supported porous electrodes for various useful catalytic conversions.
Engineering Ag-Nx Single-Atom Sites on Porous Concave N-Doped Carbon for Boosting CO2 Electroreduction.

Abstract:The electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) offers an environmentally benign pathway for renewable energy conversion and further regulation of the environmental CO2 concentration to achieve carbon cycling. However, developing desired electrocatalysts with high CO Faradaic efficiency (FECO) at an ultralow overpotential remains a grand challenge. Herein, we report an effective CO2RR electrocatalyst that features Ag single-atom coordinated with three nitrogen atoms (Ag1-N3) anchored on porous concave N-doped carbon (Ag1-N3/PCNC), which is identified by X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Ag1-N3/PCNC shows a low CO2RR onset potential of -0.24 V, high maximum FECO of 95% at -0.37 V, and high CO partial current density of 7.6 mA cm-2 at -0.55 V, exceeding most of the previous Ag electrocatalysts. The in situ infrared absorption spectra technique proves that Ag1-N3 single-atom sites have sole linear-adsorbed CO and can easily desorb *CO species to achieve the highest CO selectivity in comparison with the corresponding counterparts. This work provides significant inspiration on boosting CO2RR by tuning the active center at an atomic level to achieve a specific absorption with an intermediate.
Silver Single Atoms Combined with Clusters on Carbon Nanotubes Mediates Exclusive Electrochemical CO2‐to‐CO Conversion

Abstract:N‐doped carbon nanotubes supported Ag single atoms and Ag atomic clusters catalyst is designed to exhibit excellent electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction activity in a flow cell. In situ synchrotron infrared spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations demonstrate that turning Ag single atoms into Ag clusters resulted in electron density accumulation between Ag cluster and *COOH, thus accelerating the *COOH massive formation. The electrochemical reduction of CO2 (eCO2RR) that exclusively produces one product at industrial current density is crucial for the substantial storage of renewable energy. Modulating the electronic structure of atomically dispersed catalysts can effectively regulate the adsorption of rate‐determining‐step intermediates to achieve the desired products. Here, the study constructs a hybrid catalyst consisting of single Ag atoms and Ag atomic clusters supported on nitrogen‐doped multi‐walled carbon nanotubes that can effectively regulate the important intermediate structure of *COOH. The X‐ray photoelectron and X‐ray absorption near‐edge spectroscopies demonstrate that turning Ag single atoms into Ag clusters can weaken the electron transfer between Ag–N and present a relatively rich electron state. Thus, the rate‐determining step of *COOH massive formation is significantly accelerated, as proven by in situ synchrotron infrared spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. Using this strategy, a CO Faradaic efficiency outperforming 99% from −0.3 to −0.8 V (vs reversible hydrogen electrode) with current densities above 200 mA cm−2 and a half‐cell energetic efficiency of 86% is achieved. This work highlights a promising approach to advancing synergistic catalysts for achieving more controllable and efficient eCO2RR.

Abstract:Efficient electroreduction of CO2 into CO and other chemicals turns greenhouse gases into fuels and value-added chemicals, holding great promise for a closed carbon cycle and the alleviation of climate changes. However, there are still challenges in the large-scale application of CO2 electroreduction due to the sluggish kinetics. Herein we develop a self-assembly strategy to synthesize a highly efficient CO2 reduction electrocatalyst with atomically dispersed Ni-N4 active centers anchored on polymer-derived mesh-like N-doped carbon nanofibers (Ni-N4/NC). The Ni-N4/NC exhibits high selectivity for CO2 reduction reaction with CO Faradaic efficiency (CO FE) above 90% over a wide potential range from −0.6 to −1.0 V vs. RHE. The catalyst reaches a maximum CO FE up to 98.4% at −0.8 V with a TOF of 1.28 × 105 h−1 and Tafel slope of 113 mV·dec−1. The catalyst also exhibits remarkable stability, with little change in current density and CO FE over a 10-hour durability test at −0.8 V vs. RHE. This method provides a new route for the synthesis of highly efficient CO2 reduction electrocatalyst.

Abstract:Silver (Ag) is one of the widely investigated catalysts for CO2 electroreduction. To improve the faradaic efficiency for CO production over Ag catalysts, many efforts have been devoted to tuning the size and morphology of Ag catalysts, using Ag-containing complex compounds or ionic liquid electrolyte. Herein, we report a strategy to enhance CO2 electroreduction by constructing a Ag2O/layered zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) composite structure via one-pot hydrothermal treatment of ZIF-7 nanoparticles (NPs) in AgNO3 aqueous solution. The Ag2O/layered ZIF shows much higher CO faradaic efficiency and current density than the layered ZIF or Ag/C alone. The performance improvement in CO2 electroreduction over the Ag2O/layered ZIF is probably attributed to the synergistic effect between Ag2O NPs and the layered ZIF, as well as facilitated mass transport due to the high specific surface area of the Ag2O/layered ZIF.
