Abstract:Parity–time (PT) symmetry has been intensively exploited in optoelectronic oscillators (OEOs), enabling mode selection in mutually coupled feedback loops. However, two mutually coupled feedback loops are usually established to achieve a spatial PT-symmetric architecture, which increases system complexity and instability. Here, we propose and experimentally prove a PT-symmetric OEO based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS). The PT symmetry is implemented in an overlapping spatial loop in which the gain and loss are realized based on SBS gain and SBS loss, respectively. By adjusting the pump power and the polarization states of the probe and pump lights, the gain and loss can be balanced, thus achieving stable single-mode oscillation. In experiment, a 9.66 GHz microwave signal with a side-mode suppression ratio of 41 dB is generated. At 10 kHz offset frequency, the single-sideband phase noise reaches as low as −120.1 dBc/Hz. This demonstration opens new avenues to enhance mode selectivity in an OEO and can potentially be integrated on a chip.

Abstract:Parity-time (PT) PT ) symmetry provides a new technique for the manipulation of oscillation modes in the field of microwave photonics. In this paper, we conceive and experimentally demonstrate a simple PT-symmetric all-optical microwave oscillator (AOMO) based on a single polarimetric loop, overcoming the challenges of manipulating gain and loss and mutual coupling ratio and perfect control of the geometry in the dual-loop configurations. We also uncover the analytics of the PT-symmetry condition in an AOMO with a detailed nonquantum description. By controlling the polarization rotation angle of the PT-symmetric structure, two mutually coupled loops with balanced gain and loss are easily conceived, enabling the proposed AOMO to operate in the single mode. The optical-optical feedback modulation and oscillatory frequency selection are implemented using a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) and the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) effect, respectively. Benefiting from the SOA's cross-gain modulation, the SBS-based frequency selection, and the PT- symmetric breaking, dual-wavelength optical signals can be achieved with wideband tunability, very low beating phase noise, and high stability. In the experiment, we successfully generated an oscillating signal tuning from 3 to 30 GHz, and the measured phase noise reached - 103.2 dBc/Hz at 10 GHz and - 90.69 dBc/Hz at 30 GHz at 10-kHz offset frequency.

Abstract:An all-optical microwave oscillator based on parity-time symmetry was proposed and experimentally demonstrated. It mainly consists of a big feedback loop, an active small loop and a polarization-dependent Sagnac loop. The microwave seed signal originates from the beating between the continuous wave and the Stokes wave. The function of microwave envelope detection and feedback modulation are implemented through cross gain modulation of two semiconductor optical amplifiers. By employing the parity time symmetry loops and the Vernier effect, the single mode selectivity capability of the oscillator has been enhanced, and a single mode microwave signal with high quality can be generated. In the experiment, a highly quality microwave signal with a frequency of 10.71 GHz was generated. The single side band phase noise can reach −94.1 dBc/Hz@10 kHz and the side mode suppression ratio of the generated microwave signal reaches 41 dB. Compared to the previously reported all-photonic microwave oscillator, the single side band phase noise is improved by 7 dB at a frequency offset of 10 kHz, and by 20 dB at a frequency offset of 100 Hz. The results indicate that our proposed scheme significantly improves the quality of the generated microwave signals.

Abstract:An electrically tunable frequency-doubling optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) with operation based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) and phase modulation is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In this OEO configuration, the phase modulator in combination with an optical filter is employed to produce a frequency-doubling microwave signal, while the SBS effect provides the narrowband filtering and ensures the oscillation of the feedback driving signal at the fundamental frequency. By varying the Brillouin pump signal obtained from double-sideband-carrier-suppression modulation, the frequency tunability is realized. In our experiment, a continuous tunable frequency-doubling signal from 21.4 to 25 GHz is generated when the tuning signal applied to the intensity modulator is tuned from 200 MHz to 2 GHz.

Abstract:An optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) is a microwave photonic system consisting of an amplified optoelectronic feedback loop to generate a microwave signal. To reduce the phase noise, the feedback loop must be long to ensure a high Q factor, which is usually implemented by incorporating a long optical fiber in the loop. The key limitation of using a long fiber is that a large number of closely spaced longitudinal modes exist in the feedback loop, which makes single-frequency oscillation difficult to achieve. In this article, we propose to incorporate a photonic integrated microdisk resonator (MDR) in an OEO to implement parity-time (PT) symmetry as well as frequency tuning. By employing the reciprocity of light propagation in the MDR, two mutually coupled optoelectronic loops having an identical geometry with one having a gain coefficient and the other a loss coefficient, identical in magnitude, to form a PT-symmetric OEO that support single-frequency oscillation, are implemented. The tuning of the frequency is realized by thermally tuning the MDR. Experimental results show a microwave signal with a frequency that is tunable from 2 to 12 GHz is realized. The phase noise of the generated microwave signal at a frequency of 11.5 GHz is -117.3 dBc/Hz at a 10-kHz frequency offset. The use of a photonic integrated microdisk resonator makes the entire PT symmetric system have high potential for full photonic integration.

Abstract:An optically tunable frequency-doubling optoelectronic oscillator (FD-OEO) based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) and carrier phase-shifted double sideband (CPS-DSB) modulation is proposed and demonstrated. SBS effect provides narrowband filtering for the OEO to generate an oscillation signal with frequency equal to the Brillouin frequency shift, while a CPS-DSB modulation by using a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator is implemented to double the oscillation frequency. Owing to the wavelength-dependent Brillouin frequency shift, frequency tunability is realized by tuning the wavelength of the laser source. In the experiments, frequency-doubling microwave signals from 18.38 to 18.74 GHz are generated when the wavelength of the laser source is tuned from 1565 to 1535 nm.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a parity-time (PT)-symmetric frequency-tunable optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) in which the PT symmetry is implemented based on a single dual-polarization optical loop. By employing the inherent birefringence of a z-cut lithium niobate (LiNbO3) phase modulator (PM), two mutually coupled optoelectronic loops supporting orthogonally polarized light waves with one experiencing a gain and the other a loss are implemented. By controlling the gain, loss, and the coupling coefficients between the two loops, the PT symmetry breaking condition is met, which enables the OEO to operate in single mode without using an ultranarrow passband optical or microwave filter. The frequency tunability is realized using a microwave photonic filter (MPF) implemented using the PM and a phase-shifted fiber Bragg grating (PS-FBG). The proposed PT-symmetric OEO is experimentally evaluated. A stable and frequency-tunable microwave signal from 2 to 12 GHz is generated. The phase noise of the generated signal at 11.8 GHz is measured, which is -124dBc/Hz at a frequency offset of 10 kHz.

Abstract:Non-Hermitian photonics, relaying on parity-time (PT) symmetry, have shown promise in achieving mode selection for optical or microwave single-mode oscillation. Typically, a PT-symmetric system is constructed using two coupled loops with identical geometry. This article utilizes the PT-symmetry property to select a single frequency mode in an optoelectronic oscillator (OEO). However, traditional OEO implementations often involve discrete components, limiting widespread adoption due to factors such as size, weight, power consumption, and cost. Our aim in this paper is to leverage integrated components within the OEO loop. The proposed structure incorporates an integrated micro-ring resonator (MRR) with a high-quality factor (Q-factor) that serves both as a modulator and a resonator. Additionally, we suggest employing an adjustable integrated power splitter utilizing a micro heater to balance the gain and loss of two mutually coupled OEO loops. In this configuration, two integrated photo detectors (PD) are also utilized. In this setup, the single-frequency mode can be easily identified by simultaneously utilizing the properties of PT-symmetry and an integrated high-Q-factor resonator, obviating the need for a narrowband microwave filter. By adjusting the center frequency of the microwave photonic filter (MPF), the frequency of the generated signal can be tuned over a wide range. For instance, setting the generated frequency of the microwave signal to 11.5 GHz results in a measured phase noise of − 76.5 dBc/Hz at a 10-kHz offset frequency, with a side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) of 40 dB.

Abstract:Realization of chip-scale nonreciprocal optics such as isolators and circulators is highly demanding for all-optical signal routing and protection with standard photonics foundry process. Owing to the significant challenge for incorporating magneto-optical materials on chip, the exploration of magnetic-free alternatives has become exceedingly imperative in integrated photonics. Here, we demonstrate a chip-based, tunable all-optical isolator at the telecommunication band based upon bulk stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in a high-Q silica microtoroid resonator. This device exhibits remarkable characteristics over most state-of-the-art implements, including high isolation ratio, no insertion loss, and large working power range. Thanks to the guided acoustic wave and accompanying momentum-conservation condition, SBS also enables us to realize the first nonreciprocal parity-time symmetry in two directly-coupled microresonators. The breach of time-reversal symmetry further makes the design a versatile arena for developing many formidable ultra-compact devices such as unidirectional single-mode Brillouin lasers and supersensitive photonic sensors.

Abstract:A wideband tunable optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) based on the deamplification of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. A tunable single passband microwave photonic filter (MPF) utilizing phase modulation and SBS deamplification is used to realize the tunability of the OEO. Theoretical analysis of the MPF and phase noise performance of the OEO are presented. The frequency response of the MPF is determined by the + 1st sideband attenuation due to SBS deamplification and phase shift difference between the two sidebands due to chromatic dispersion and SBS. The close-in (< 1 MHz) phase noise of the proposed OEO is shown to be dominated by the laser frequency noise via phase shift of SBS. The conversion of the laser frequency noise to the close-in phase noise of the proposed OEO is effectively reduced compared with the OEO based on amplification by SBS. Tunable 7 to 40 GHz signals are experimentally obtained. The single-sideband (SSB) phase noise at 10 kHz offset is -128 dBc/Hz for 10.30 GHz signal. Compared with the OEO based on SBS amplification, the proposed OEO can achieve a phase noise performance improvement beyond 20 dB at 10 kHz offset. The maximum frequency and power drifts at 10.69 GHz are within 1 ppm and 1.4 dB during 1000 seconds, respectively. To achieve better close-in phase noise performance, lower frequency noise laser and higher pump power are preferred. The experimental results agree well with the theoretical models.

Abstract:A novel approach to generate continuously tunable microwave and millimeter-wave (mm-wave) signals is proposed and experimentally demonstrated based on an optical phase modulator and a Brillouin-assisted notch-filtering technique. The strong optical carrier of the phase modulated signal is deeply suppressed by using stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in a dispersion-shifted-fiber ring while the sidebands keep unchanged. Abstract:Microwave signals with broadband tunable frequencies and low phase noise can be widely used in communication systems and radar systems. Optoelectronic oscillators (OEOs) with high Q value have the potential to generate the signals meeting the above requirements. In this paper, we present a simple scheme to realize a widely tunable OEO with ultra-high tuning resolution based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS), meanwhile maintaining the low phase noise for all the generated frequencies. By choosing different high-order sideband of the phase-modulated signal as the SBS pump, the frequency of the generated signal can be widely tuned. The accurate frequency tuning can be achieved by changing the drive signal frequency of the phase modulator. As a result, the obtained signal of the OEO with the frequency tuning range up to 40 GHz, and the tuning resolution as accurate as 10 MHz can be obtained. The influence of the SBS gain and the drive signal on the signal phase noise is analyzed theoretically. The effects of the drive signal and the electrical amplifier on the phase noise of the obtained signal are analyzed experimentally. The results show that the noise figure of the amplifier directly affects the phase noise quality of the acquired signal. And the phase noise of the generated signals is lower than -120 dBc/Hz at 100 kHz offset frequency, which has no relation with the drive signal, or the order of the modulation sideband. Abstract:An optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) system is built up with a high-speed silicon microring modulator. The modulator is based on a p-n doped ring resonator with a radius of 10 μm. Its electro-optic (EO) 3 dB bandwidth is ∼31.7 GHz, which makes it suitable for generating multi-GHz radio frequency signals. By using this modulator, one of the essential components of an OEO, the EO converter, has been dramatically miniaturized. At the same time, assisted by the ring resonator, the phase noise of the generated 10 GHz signal (nearly −90 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset) is not compromised compared to other integrated OEOs with mm footprint modulators. This is an important step toward a compact, scalable, and fully integrated silicon photonics-based OEO system together with our existing integrated light sources and photodetectors.

Abstract:A simple photonic scheme is presented to generate micro-wave/mm-wave sources by utilizing the optical heterodyne technique between an optical carrier and its Stokes light coming from stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in optical fibers. Abstract:A simple realization of frequency-doubling optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) using a phase modulator and a chirp fiber Bragg grating (CFBG) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In this OEO configuration, the phase modulator in combination with an optical filter is working as doubled-sideband phase modulation to produce a frequency-doubling microwave signal, while the CFBG ensures the oscillation of feedback driving signal at fundamental frequency by converting the phase-modulated signal to intensity-modulated signal. As a result, a self-oscillating fundamental microwave signal at 8 GHz and frequency-doubled microwave signal at 16 GHz are simultaneously obtained.

Abstract:A novel scheme of microwave generation based on heterodyne phase locking of an optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) is proposed and demonstrated. The oscillation signal of a dual loop self-injection-locking OEO (DSILOEO) is mixed with a voltage controlled crystal oscillator (VCXO) and its up-converted output is phase-locked by a reference source to develop a heterodyne phase-locked-loop. The DSILOEO has suppressed phase noise while its frequency fluctuation is cancelled out by the VCXO so that low phase noise and excellent long-term stability can be realized independently for microwave generation, which greatly increases the design flexibility. The experimental results show that the phase noise at 10-kHz offset carrier of -122 dBc/Hz and the Allan deviation of 1.6 x 10(-12) are achieved.
