Abstract:The in situ gas desorption test is of great significance to gas content determination, resource potential assessment, reserve prediction, and commercial development. In this paper, shale cores of the Longmaxi Formation and Wufeng Formation from northern Guizhou were collected and subjected to an in situ gas desorption test, and then monofractal and multifractal analyses were used to explore the essential characteristics of gas desorption behaviors, and finally, the relationships between monofractality, multifractality, and gas desorption behaviors were investigated. The in situ gas desorption test results demonstrated a lower desorbed gas content but a higher initial desorption rate for Wufeng shales. The monofractality of gas desorption behaviors in the mud circulation temperature stage and the multifractality of gas desorption behaviors in the full desorption stage were revealed. The gas desorption behaviors of Wufeng shales display stronger initial aggregation, complexity, and local agglomeration and worse autocorrelation compared to those of Longmaxi shales, which may be caused by developed macropores and microfractures in Wufeng shales. While Longmaxi shales exhibit more uniform and continuous gas desorption behaviors, which is related to the developed micro- and mesopores and well-connected pore systems. Wufeng Formation has a favorable exploitation prospect and can achieve economic benefits earlier, while Longmaxi Formation needs a long production time to utilize its reserves.
