Abstract:Chinese language learners in the UK tend to be younger age, with the largest size and scale of primary and secondary school students. Learners as one of the important dimensions of Chinese teaching, have been directly or indirectly reflected in the dissertations of volunteers who conduct Chinese language teaching in the UK in recent years. The UK National Curriculum and Chinese Test Syllabus both embody the Learner-Centered concept. Based on this concept, with the representative dissertations as the study materials, the characteristics of Chinese language learners in primary and secondary schools are as follows: cognitive level is different, concrete thinking is dominant, and they have abstract thinking abilities such as logical reasoning; they are generally interested in Chinese, but their learning motivation is vague, and their persistence is difficult to last. External motivation is closely related to exams and career choices; memory strategies and social strategies are more used, while emotional strategies are less; class performances are active, but self-discipline needs to be strengthened. In teaching, it is necessary to design teaching activities that conform to learners’ cognitive characteristics, stimulate learners’ learning motivation in combination with career needs, adapt to and cultivate learning strategies, and pay efforts to classroom management, so as to give full play to learners’ ability to learn and accept independently, and explore and realize the connotative development of international Chinese education in different countries especially in the UK.
