Abstract:Large-area ZnO nanorod arrays were synthesized successfully on the stainless steel mesh through chemical vapor deposition route. The coated mesh shows good water permeability after ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, while it is impermeable to water after dark storage. This repeatable process suggests that the wettability transition of the rough surface is complete reversible. Besides, the special hierarchical nanostructures and the suitable size of the original mesh play an important role in smart controllability of the water permeability. The reversible transition of surface wettability has potential applications in many aspects, such as microchips, micro-fluidic devices, and biotechnology.

Abstract:Remarkable surface wettability transition occurs with an inducement of ultraviolet (UV) for aligned ZnO nanorod films. The inorganic oxide films, which show super-hydrophobicity (left), become super-hydrophilic (right) when exposed to UV illumination. After the films are placed in the dark, the wettability evolves back to super-hydrophobicity. This reversible effect is ascribed to the cooperation of the surface photosensitivity and the aligned nanostructure. Such special property will greatly extend the applications of ZnO films.

Abstract:Tuning the surface wettability is of great interest for both scientific research and practical applications. We demonstrated reversible transition between superhydrophobicity and superhydrophilicity on a ZnO nanorod/epoxy composite film. The epoxy resin serves as an adhesion and stress relief layer. The ZnO nanorods were exposed after oxygen reactive ion etching of the epoxy matrix. A subsequent chemcial treatment with fluoroalkyl and alkyl silanes resulted in a superhydrophobic surface with a water contact angle up to 158.4° and a hysteresis as low as 1.3°. Under UV irradiation, the water contact angle decreased gradually, and the surface eventually became superhydrophilic because of UV induced decomposition of alkyl silanes and hydroxyl absorption on ZnO surfaces. A reversible transition of surface wettability was realized by alternation of UV illumination and surface treatment. Such ZnO nanocomposite surface also showed improved mechanical robustness.

Abstract:The ZnO films were fabricated by chemical oxidation of metallic Zn in a 5% N, N-dimethyl- formamide (DMF) aqueous solution at 95°C for 24h. After modified with octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS), a superhydrophobic ZnO film was obtained. The superhydrophobic film turned into a superhydrophilic one after UV irradiation, which can be recovered through being placed in the dark.

Abstract:ZnO nanostructures were fabricated on glass substrate through a convenient deposition process. Firstly, ZnO seed layers were deposited on glass substrates through sol–gel method. Secondly, the ZnO nanostructures were then grown in a Teflon-lined stainless steel autoclave by immersing the seed layers into aqueous solution containing zinc nitrate hexahydrate and ammonia. The microstructures, morphologies, photoluminescence spectra and hydrophobicity of the nanostructures were analyzed by X-ray diffraction spectrometer, field emission scanning electron microscopy, laser micro-Raman spectrometer and contact angle apparatus, respectively. It can be seen that ZnO nanostructures display different surface morphologies such as ZnO nanorods parallel to the substrate surface, like-pencil ZnO nanorods and bending ZnO nanorods by altering the PH value. The largest intensity ratio of the UV/visible emission and the superhydrophobic surfaces (CA = 156°) with high adhesion can be achieved in the sample grown in the solutions with the PH value of 11.2. The high adhesion may be attributed to the strong capillary force and the ZnO nanostructures with petal effect can be explained by Wenzel model.

Abstract:The wetting behaviors of zinc oxide (ZnO) thin films, which were grown on aluminum-doped zinc oxide (AZO) and tin-doped indium oxide (ITO) buffer layers by hydrothermal process, are reported. The ZnO film grown on the AZO layer, which has a morphology containing micro- and nanoscaled features, shows a slight decrease in water contact angle (WCA) after UV illumination. The ZnO film grown on the ITO layer, which is composed of single-scale microrods, exhibits a transition between hydrophobicity and superhydrophilicity under UV exposure for 8h and dark storage for 2 weeks. The wettabilities of the both films are enabled to convert reversibly by alternative heating at 400°C and 100°C. This work may be of huge importance from the viewpoint of self-cleaning and anti-fogging applications based on wettability control of ZnO films.

Abstract:This work reports an oriented growth process of two-dimensional (2D) ZnO nanoflakes on aluminum substrate through a low temperature hydrothermal technique and proposes the preliminary growth mechanism. A bionic superhydrophobic surface with excellent corrosion protection over a wide pH range in both acidic and alkaline solutions was constructed by a chemical coating treatment with stearic acid (SA) molecules on ZnO nanoflakes. It is found that the superhydrophobic surface of ZnO nanoflake arrays shows a maximum water contact angle (CA) of 157° and a low sliding angle of 8°, and it can be reversibly switched to its initial superhydrophilic state under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, which is due to the UV-induced decomposition of the coated SA molecules. This study is significant for simple and inexpensive building of large-scale 2D ZnO nanoflake arrays with special wettability which can extend the applications of ZnO films to many other important fields.

Abstract:A superhydrophobic ZnO thin film was fabricated by the Au-catalyzed chemical vapor deposition method. The surface of the film exhibits hierarchical structure with nanostructures on sub-microstructures. The water contact angle (CA) was 164.3°, turning into a superhydrophilic one (CA < 5°) after UV illumination, which can be recovered through being placed in the dark or being heated. The film was attached tightly to the substrate, showing good stability and durability. The surface structures were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy.

Abstract:As-prepared WO3 nanostructure films on alumina or tungsten substrates by a facile hydrothermal method exhibit a superhydrophilic property. An effective strategy is proposed to control the wettability of WO3 films in a reversible manner between superhydrophilicity and superhydrophobicity with a rapid response. By controlling the process of adsorption/desorption of n-dodecanethiol associated with the light-induced plating Ag nano-grains on WO3 nanostructures, it only takes about 25min to fulfill the wettability change from superhydrophilicity to superhydrophobicity, and only 30s to finish the reversed change. Moreover, the contact angles of WO3 surface can be tuned by controlling the etching time of superhydrophobic WO3 surfaces in a solution of nitric acid containing 5mM sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate. Electrowetting process is successfully demonstrated to trap a water drop onto the superhydrophobic WO3 surfaces. Considering WO3 is one of typical electrochromic materials, researches on the effect of coupling between electrowetting and electrochromic properties would be more promising.

Abstract:ZnO films,with rapid reversible transition properties of super-hydrophobicity and super-hydrophilicity under vacuum ultraviolet(VUV) irradiation,were prepared by a simple and low-temperature solution method by controlling the pH value with hydrofluoric acid.The surface of the film exhibits hierarchical structure with nanostructure on the micro-spheres mimicking to the taro leaf surface.The fresh film shows the water contact angle(WCA) of 151°,turning into a super-hydrophilic(WCA<5°) one after 30 min VUV irradiation.The super-hydrophilic film can be recovered to super-hydrophobic through being placed in the dark for 6 d.The wettability of the film can be reversibly switched circularly by the alternation of VUV irradiation and dark storage.The transition from super-hydrophobic to super-hydrophilic is more quickly than that of the past reports due to the use of VUV and the special hierarchical structure of the ZnO film surface.This study is expected to promote the applications of ZnO materials in micro-fluidic devices.

Abstract:A simple and one-step method to form a rough ZnO layer consisting of micro/nanoscale hierarchical structures via direct femtosecond laser ablation of the Zn surface is reported for the first time. The resultant surfaces show switchable wettability between superhydrophobicity and quasi-superhydrophilicity via alternate UV irradiation and dark storage.

Abstract:Hydroxide zinc carbonate (HZC) films with different morphologies were deposited on zinc plates through a convenient chemical-bath deposition (CBD) process using urea solution. By altering deposition conditions, the structure of HZC crystals could be tuned from vertically aligned nanosheets to flowerlike microstructures. The upright-standing HZC nanosheets were developed from interconnected nanorods growing up on the zinc plates in aqueous urea solution and led to superhydrophilic properties because of the hydrophilic upside edges consisting of hydroxyl groups and large distance. In contrast, flowerlike microstructures formed in N,N-dimethylformamide-water solution and the exposed hydrophobic crystal planes resulted in superhydrophobic properties with a water contact angle as high as 155.2 degrees. The final surface wettabilities could be ascribed to both the atomic composition and hydrophilicity of HZC crystal planes exposed to the water-solid interface. All the surfaces with specific wettabilities can be one-step fabricated without subsequent modification, and tunable wetting properties can provide zinc substrates extending applications.

Abstract:Engineered surfaces with reversibly switching interfacial properties, such as wettability and liquid repellency, are highly desirable in diverse application fields but are rare. We have developed a general concept to prepare metallic porous surfaces with exceptionally powerful wettability switch capabilities and liquid-repellent properties through an extremely simple one-step electrochemical deposition process. The wettability switch and manipulative liquid-repellent properties are enabled by orientation change of the dodecyl sulfate ions ionically bonded to the porous membranes during electrodeposition. The porous membrane with adjustable wettability enables it to trap different lubricants on demand within the pores to form liquid-infused porous surfaces with varied liquid-repellent properties. We have demonstrated the application of the (liquid-infused) porous membrane in encryption, controllable droplet transfer, and water harvesting. Moreover, the silver porous membrane can be coated onto a copper mesh, forming a smart antifouling liquid gate capable of allowing water or oil to pass through on request.

Abstract:The design and fabrication of surfaces that support rapid wetting transition remain technologically challenging. Here, we examine the effects of optical illumination on the wetting behaviors of zinc oxide (ZnO) single crystals. We find that ultraviolet irradiation above the band gap energy promotes a rapid wetting transition, characterized by sliding of the water droplet, within a few seconds. Notably, the transition for Zn-polar (0001) ZnO surfaces is even faster than that for O-polar (0001̅) ZnO surfaces. We confirmed that process is dependent on power, surface polarity, and solution pH and reversible through illumination by near-infrared light, which restores the water contact angle back to its initial value. Surface chemical analysis revealed that the instantaneous photocatalytic formation of surface-terminated hydroxyl (-OH) groups is responsible for the observed rapid wetting transition. Density functional theory calculations with the inclusion of onsite Coulomb interactions revealed that both the Zn-polar and O-polar surfaces can be easily covered with -OH groups through the adsorption of -OH groups or hydrogen atoms, respectively. This study develops a route to fabricate optically active and controllable microfluidic devices that support rapid wetting transitions for water droplet manipulation.

Abstract:Superhydrophobic nanostructured TiO2 film was successfully fabricated on the Ti plate by anodic oxidation and lauric acid modification. By varying the applied voltage, TiO2 films with various nanostructures and colors were prepared. The water contact angles (WCA) on the modified TiO2 film increased as the applied voltage increased, and the highest WCA on the TiO2 nanovesuvianite film was about 161.23°. When the applied voltage was 5 V and 20 V, the obtained TiO2 nanopores and TiO2 nanotubes could be used to build two improved Cassie models for designing superhydrophobic surface. Moreover, the superhydrophobic TiO2 film showed good anti-fouling property, particularly it could maintain superhydrophobicity both when immersed in and taken out from the organic solvents. The superhydrophobic film could be changed into superhydrophilic under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, and the superhydrophilic film recovered to hydrophobic or superhydrophobic gradually at 60 °C in the dark. Additionally, the superhydrophilic film showed underwater superoleophobicity, which exhibited excellent anti-fouling property by degrading the oil under UV light.

Abstract:Tin oxide nanowires and heterostructures thereof were synthesized by sequential aplication of thermal and plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition (CVD) methods. The wetting properties of surfaces based on individual nanowires, hyperbranched SnO2@SnO2 structures, and SnO2@SnO2@SiOx core-shell heterostructures could be modulated from superhydrophilic to superhydrophobic by changing both chemical composition and the geometrical architecture of nanoheterostructures. Whereas the randomly grown SnO2 nanowires with a contact angle of 3 degrees exhibited superhydrophilicity, the contact angle of SnO2@SnO2 heterostructures synthesized by a two-step CVD process increased to 133 degrees. The corresponding contact angle of SnO2@SnO2@SiOx heterostructures was enhanced to 155.8 degrees by a hydrophobic SiOx coating. Switchable surface wettability in SnO2@SnO2@SiOx heterostructures was observed by alternation of UV irradiation, storage in dark, and O-2 annealing, indicating that geometric microstructure was the major determinant in the switchable wettability. The significant change in the surface wettability upon changing the geometrical features is of potential interest in functional coatings such as antifinger print and self-cleaning surfaces.

Abstract:Designing geometrical structures and making chemical modifications are two effective routes to tailor wettability. ZnO-based hierarchical nanostructures, in particular, vertically aligned nanoneedles and nanonails were employed as a platform to study the effect of surface morphology. The hydrophobicity and the variation of contact angle in the as-grown samples were attributed to the combined effects of surface roughness and partial water-solid contact. Subsequent chemical modifications with stearic acid led to superhydrophobic ZnO surfaces, while annealing in air resulted into superhydrophilicity. Under the alternations of coating and removal of stearic acid, reversible transitions between superhydrophilicity and hydrophobicity were realized. (c) 2008 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:The ZnO nanowire arrays were synthesized by a simple vapor–solid process. Wettability of nanowire arrays was studied by measuring contact angle. Under both oxygen plasma treatment and annealing at O2 atmosphere, the wettability of nanowire arrays changed from hydrophobic to super-hydrophilic. By measuring the photoluminescence spectra of modified samples, we affirm that the wettability conversion is not due to oxygen vacancies. It is thought that the oxygen related surface defect is the main reason to make this kind of change.

Abstract:Large-scale two-dimensional ZnO nanocrystal films on aluminum substrate were fabricated by a one-step hydrothermal method under mild conditions, where all the ZnO nanocrystals had a lamellar structure generally perpendicular to the substrates and formed network-like porous configurations. The morphologies of the films were dependent on both the reaction temperature and concentration of zinc. The wettability of the ZnO films was assessed by measuring the water contact angle without any surface functionalisation. The porous structures of the as-prepared films could effectively enhance its hydrophobicity and the water contact angle ranged from 40 degrees to 135 degrees depending on the surface morphology and the arrangement of ZnO planes, indicating a simple and promising route to make aluminum surface waterproof and even self-cleaning. The hydrophobic ZnO surface could be switched to hydrophilic state by UV irradiation.
