Abstract:In China, the aging of bridges is becoming prominent, and proper maintenance of bridges is a pressing issue. Nevertheless, the massive resource and energy consumption that puts a huge strain on sustainability has not been sufficiently studied in bridge maintenance, especially the impact of decision-makers’ psychological preference for sustainability risk. Here we propose an optimization method for bridge maintenance based on the psychological preference for sustainable risk under climate change scenarios. To investigate the driving mechanisms of bridge maintenance decision-making behavior considering climate change, we collected data through a questionnaire survey and quantified the behavioral intentions of decision-makers using an expanded theory of planned behavior. Then, a multi-attribute utility optimization model considering decision makers' sustainability risk attitudes was developed to consider the economic, environmental, and social impacts of the maintenance behavior. Regarding the computational complexity of the planned behavior theory prediction models, machine learning algorithms were introduced to simplify the behavior prediction process. The capabilities of the proposed approach were demonstrated in the case of a prestressed concrete highway bridge. It shows that the psychological factors of the engineer are crucial to the choice of maintenance strategy, and the proposed approach minimizes the uncertainty of the maintenance strategy due to the difference in the attitudes of the decision-makers regarding the sustainability risk.
