Abstract:Oil spills can cause significant negative impacts on the environment, economy, and society. Bio-remediation is recognized as the most sustainable and environmentally friendly remediation method. However, two problems limit its application: (1) oxygen is required and (2) treatment is slow. Biochar can solve these problems perfectly: (1) absorb oil from soil for immediate oil removal and (2) stimulate the growth of oil degrading microorganisms without oxygen. In this study, a series of lab-scale lab tests were conducted to investigate the effects of depth of the biochar barrier and test duration on the oil removal efficiency. After each test, the bacteria number was counted to understand the bacteria growth with and without biochar in oil-contaminated soils. Test results demonstrate (1) the absorptivity of biochar is 900%, (2) oil removal rate increases with the increase of barrier depth and elapsed time, and (3) biochar could stimulate the growth of bacteria by 3-10 times.
