Abstract:We present Li and B isotope data for muscovite, biotite, and feldspar + quartz separated from two-mica granite and biotite granite samples from the Huayang-Wulong granite suite (south Qinling, central China). Our data demonstrate systematic differences in the Li and B isotopic compositions among these minerals. Our results indicate that early-crystallizing minerals have lower 67Li and 611B values than the original melt and that residual melts and late magmatic fluids may acquire anomalously high 67Li and 611B values. Furthermore, our data imply that (1) late melts and magmatic fluids do not reflect the composition of their source melt, (2) minerals that crystallized over a large segment of magma evolution may be isotopically zoned, and (3) mineral-selective alteration by late magmatic fluids camouflages the source of the fluid, whose 67Li and 611B values reflect the isotopic compositions of the altered minerals rather than the composition of the remaining rock.

Abstract:The Jiajika pegmatite-type Li deposit located in the southeastern Songpan-Ganze terrane of the eastern Tibetan Plateau is one of the largest hard-rock Li deposit in China, and its ore-genetic mechanism is still controversial. To understand the Li concentration of potentially economic levels in the Jiajika pegmatite-type Li deposit, the association between Li enrichment and granitic magma evolution is investigated using B isotope in tourmaline grains along the entire 3211-m-depth of the JSD-1 drill core in this work. Tourmalines hosted in granite, pegmatite, barrovian-type metamorphic rock and calc-magnesium-silicate metamorphic rock are being plotted in the fields of Li-poor granitoids and associated pegmatites and aplites on the Al-Fe-Mg and Ca-Fe-Mg ternary diagrams. These characteristics, along with their high Fe/Mg ratios and high Al cation numbers in Y position, are indicative of a magmatic origin. The B isotope (δ11B) of tourmalines in granite and pegmatite in Jiajika granitic pegmatite type Li deposits vary from −9.49 to −7.06‰, in line with the range observed in 90 % of worldwide granites and pegmatites. In comparison of the measured data of δ11B vs. Li to the modeled curves indicates that the differentiation process of granitic magma follows an equilibrium crystallization model better than a fractional crystallization model. The compiled evidence proves that magma differentiation accompanied by fluid exsolution facilitates the enrichment of Li during granitic magmatic evolution. The formation of the domal structure of granitic sheets due to the decompressing effect of magma ascent favors massive fluid exsolution at the late-stage granitic magma, which contributes to the deposition of spodumene dominated ore body at the shallower depth of 5–150 m.

Abstract:Mantle metasomatism by percolating melts/fluids can significantly modify the geochemical and mineralogical compositions of the sub-continental lithospheric mantle (SCLM). We present a detailed study of water contents and Li concentrations and isotopic compositions in mantle minerals from a suite of peridotite xenoliths entrained by a Cenozoic Strombolian volcano in the southern French Massif Central (FMC). Wide ranging clinopyroxene trace element distributions (e.g., (La/Yb)N from 0.25 to 22.21; Ti/Eu ratios from 453 to 4892) suggest that the SCLM has undergone metasomatism by carbonatitic melts/fluids or melts/fluids related to subducted materials. Two amphibole-bearing samples exhibit depletion of light rare earth elements (LREE; (La/Yb)N=0.26 and 0.30, respectively) in amphiboles, similar to that in co-existing clinopyroxenes; these samples indicate that amphiboles grew during a separate modally metasomatic event predating the cryptic metasomatism accounting for LREE enrichment and negative HFSE anomalies in other samples. Mineral Li concentrations are similar to those in the normal mantle, with inter-mineral Li partitioning nearly equilibrated and intragranular Li distributions nearly homogeneous. However, negative δ7Li values of pyroxenes in some samples (as low as −8.8‰ in clinopyroxene of sample MC38) can be attributed to diffusive exchange with a small-volume melt of moderate Li concentration and light Li isotopic composition, originally associated with a recycled component. Preservation of the currently observed large inter-mineral Li isotopic variations indicates that melt percolation occurred shortly before entrainment of the peridotite xenoliths by the host magma. Mineral water contents vary from 41 to 428ppm in clinopyroxenes and from 28 to 152ppm in orthopyroxenes, and their roughly negative co-variation with coexisting olivine Fo contents imply that partial melting was the main control over mineral water content variations in most samples. Varied water contents in LREE-enriched metasomatized samples indicate the involvement of metasomatic agents of different origins. The aqueous agent responsible for generation of amphiboles in two samples did not produce a notable increase in the water contents of coexisting nominally anhydrous minerals.

Abstract:The highly evolved granites are closely associated with rare-metal mineralization. It is still debated whether the enrichment of rare metals is mainly controlled by magmatic or hydrothermal processes. Lithium is a fluid-mobile element that preferentially partitions to the fluid phase when the melt reaches H 2 O saturation, making the Li isotope system a powerful geochemical tool to record the potential melt-fluid interaction during magma evolution. This study addresses the issue of Li isotope fractionation in highly evolved fine syenogranites (FSGs) from the Xintianling pluton in the Nanling Range, South China. The Xintianling pluton consists of the coarse biotite monzogranites (CBMGs) and evolved FSGs. The identical Nd isotope data of the CBMGs (ε Nd (t) = -8.2–-8.8) and FSGs (ε Nd (t) = -7.9–-8.9) suggest that they were derived from the same crustal magma. The FSGs were derived from the highly evolved melts extracted from CBMGs through the fractionation of major rock-forming minerals. This is supported by the compositional shifts and validated by Rb, Sr, and Ba trace element modelling. Li isotopic analysis shows that highly evolved FSGs have heavier Li isotope compositions (δ 7 Li = 2.6–7.9 ‰) than the CBMGs (δ 7 Li = 0.1–1.9 ‰). Isotopic modelling, coupled with variations in Li concentrations in FSGs, suggests that diffusive kinetic fractionation by disequilibrium fluid exsolution during the late stage of the granitic magma evolution controls the Li isotope fractionation of the Xintianling granites. Rapid fluid exsolution not only modified the Li isotope composition of the FSGs but also transported the rare metals (e.g. W) and fluxing components (Li, F, and Cl), which resulted in the formation of the large Xintianling W deposits.

Abstract:Lithium (Li) elemental and isotopic compositions of the Jurassic Jingshan leucogranites, including garnet-rich mafic enclaves and wall rock Wuhe gneisses from the southeast margin of North China Craton (NCC) were investigated to understand the behavior of Li isotopes during post-collisional magmatism. The Jingshan leucogranites have distinct U-shape REE patterns with Y and REE concentrations significantly lower yet Sr/Y ratios higher than their presumed source rocks, i.e., the Dabie-Sulu gneisses. Trace element modeling of REE and Sr/Y suggests these elemental signatures of the Jingshan leucogranites can be consistently explained by a fluid-present crustal incongruent partial melting: Bt+Qz+Pl+H2O=Grt+melt, leaving mainly Grt+Bt with minor allanite in the residuum. The mafic enclaves show identical Sr-Nd isotopic compositions with their host leucogranites, contrasting with the Wuhe gneiss and the exposed regional lower crust. The garnet-rich mafic enclaves are thus interpreted as entrained residual phases formed by this incongruent partial melting.

Abstract:Mixing of low delta 7Li sediment components (delta 7Li(%o) = 1000 x [(7Li/6Li)sample/(7Li /6Li)L-SVEC - 1]) with high delta 7Li altered oceanic crusts can explain the MORB-like Li isotopic signature of arc lavas. However, marine sediments with low delta 7Li values have rarely been reported. The metasomatism of metasedimentary rocks in me ' lange zones may induce large Li isotopic fractionation; however, the Li isotopic behaviour of metasedimentary rocks during high-temperature fluid-rock reactions remains poorly understood. In this study, an integrated Li-O-Sr-Nd isotopic investigation was conducted on the Baiyun orogenic gold deposit, which represents a relatively simplified high-T hydrothermal system, to explore the Li isotopic behaviour during high-T metasomatism (>200 degrees C) of metapelites. The main host rocks in Baiyun are lithologically monotonous schists, with alterations including K-feldspathization, sericitization, and carbonation. The Nd isotopes identified host rock samples that could best represent the protolith of the altered schists in Baiyun. The Sr and O isotopic modelling yielded consistent water/ rock ratios of 0.1-7.6 and 0.6-5.9, respectively, suggesting that relatively small volumes of fluids were infiltrated. There is no correlation among Li, Sr, and O isotopes; instead, a negative Li-K2O correlation and a positive delta 7Li-K2O correlation of the altered schists are observed, suggesting that potassic metasomatism controlled Li concentrations and Li isotopes. The delta 7Li values of altered schists in Baiyun can be classified into Group I, having lower Li concentrations (3.2-22.2 ppm) and delta 7Li values (- 3.8-0.4%o) than the protolith (31.6-47.9 ppm, 0.9-2.8%o), and Group II, having significantly lower Li concentrations (0.9-2.5 ppm) and overlapped or higher delta 7Li values (1.0-4.5%o) than the protolith. Fluid leaching during high-T alteration removes Li and more 7Li than 6Li, which accounts for the lower Li concentrations and delta 7Li values of Group I. When there is little Li remaining in rocks owing to progressive fluid leaching, the Li isotopes of the altered schists are equilibrated with heavy fluid Li (fluid buffering), which leads to higher delta 7Li values observed in Group II. Based on a case study in Baiyun, this study proposes that similar high-T metasomatism of metasedimentary rocks in me ' lange zones could result in low delta 7Li sediment inputs. Mixing of flux-modified isotopically light sediment inputs with isotopically heavy, altered oceanic crusts could account for the MORB-like Li isotopes of arc lavas.
The Origin of Mafic Microgranular Enclaves in Granitoids: Insights from in Situ Sr Isotope of Plagioclases and Zr-Hf Isotopes of Zircons

Abstract:Mafic microgranular enclaves (MMEs) are common in many granitoid plutons and their origin is crucial for understanding the petrogenesis and tectonic setting of their hosts. Most previous workers have studied MMEs by using in situ zircon U-Pb and Hf-O isotopes. However, whether the zircons in the MMEs recorded the primary isotopes of their host MMEs is not well constrained. Here, two MMEs from the Daocheng (DC-2) and Dongcuo (HZS-3) granitic plutons, as well as their host granites, in the Triassic Yidun arc belt, eastern Tibetan Plateau, were studied. The MMEs have zircon U-Pb ages of 219 +/- 3 Ma and 225 +/- 3 Ma respectively, similar to their host granites. They also have similar or slightly depleted zircon Lu-Hf isotopes to their host granites. Furthermore, zircons from the Dongcuo pluton have indistinguishable Ti-in-zircon temperatures (T-zr) and Th/U ratios from those of their host granites, whereas zircons from the Daocheng pluton have higher T-zr values and Th/U ratios than those of their host granites. Model calculations indicate that the whole-rock composition of the studied MMEs was different from the melt composition from which the zircon grains grew. Additionally, zircon from Daocheng sample DC-2 has larger variations of Zr stable isotopes than its host granite, whereas those of Dongcuo sample HZS-3 have lower delta Zr-94/90(IPGp-zr) values than its host granite. Previous study suggests that early crystallized zircons will have lighter Zr isotopes. Thus, based on our new data, we propose that zircons from Dongcuo were actually xenocrysts that formed at an early stage in the granitic magma chamber, whereas those from Daocheng crystallized during magma mixing. Thus, none of the zircons in this study have recorded the primary isotopes of the MMEs. In addition, there are also many An-rich plagioclase crystals in the MMEs from both localities and the initial Sr-87/Sr-86 ratios of these plagioclases are quite heterogeneous. Both of the samples (DC-2 and HZS-3) record three peaks of 0.7078, 0.7064 and 0.7030, and 0.7087, 0.7096 and 0.7105, respectively, which record the primary Sr isotopes of the MMEs, as well as details of the interaction between the mantle-derived and crust-derived magmas. The lowest initial Sr-87/Sr-86 ratio peak was lower than the arc volcanic rocks but similar to those of MORBs in the Jinshajiang suture zone of the area. Therefore, the primary magma of the MMEs was likely derived from a depleted mantle source. We propose that in situ Sr isotopes of Anrich plagioclase and Zr isotopes of zircon can be powerful tools in deciphering the petrogenesis of MMEs. To simply use the zircon Hf-O isotopes to constrain the primary composition of MMEs is not adequate for determining their origin.

Abstract:We carried out combined Nd and Li isotopic studies on the Neoproterozoic biotite granites, late Mesozoic evolved two-mica/muscovite granites and associated the Shuangqiaoshan Group metapelites from the Jiangnan Orogen (South China), which, along with petrological and geochemical data, were used to constrain the lithium isotopic behavior during partial melting of metapelites, the origin of the REE tetrad effect in evolved granites, and implications for related rare-metal mineralization. The Neoproterozoic biotite granites show features typical of S-types (e.g., high A/CNK ratios), and have epsilon(Nd)=-6.9 to -10 and delta Li-7=-2.2--4%, comparable to the Shuangqiaoshan Group metapelites (with epsilon Nd=-6 to -11 and delta Li-7=-2--3.7%, respectively), suggesting that the biotite granites were derived from melting of the metapelites and the Li isotopic fractionation during the melting process appears negligible. The two late Mesozoic Shimensi and Zengjialong granites occur as small stocks, showing high silica, peraluminous, low CaO and Sr contents, variably enrichment in volatiles (F, B), and are accompanied by W-Cu and Sn mineralization. The Shimensi granites have epsilon Nd(t) values of -7.0--8.6 and delta Li-7=-2.7%--3.9%, similar to the Shuangqiaoshan Group metapelites, whereas the Zengjialong granites have relatively high eNd(t) values (-5.1--7.3) and heavy Li isotopic features (mostly delta Li-7=-0.18%-+ 1.53%), and particularly, REE tetrad effect is seen in the latter. We argue that the late Mesozoic evolved granites formed as a result of re-melting of the granulitic residues left in the lower crust after extraction of the Neoproterozoic biotite granites from the metapelites. Such re-melting of the residues was triggered by underplating of basaltic magma, with more mantle input (and F, B as well) in the source of the Zengjialong granites. The elevated delta Li-7 values of the Zengjialong granites were probably caused by intense interaction between melt and external fluids during magma emplacement, which, in turn, resulted in the formation of the REE tetrad effect in the granites. Isotopic modeling suggests that fluid exsolution from evolved granites is minor, and is less likely to have been responsible for the extensive rare-metal mineralization as traditionally thought.

Abstract:Despite the occurrence of highly variable lithium (Li) elemental distribution and isotopic fractionation in mantle mineral, the mechanism of Li heterogeneity and fractionation remains a controversial issue. We measured Li contents and isotopic compositions of olivine and clinopyroxene xenocrysts and phenocrysts from kamafugite host lavas, as well as minerals in melt pockets occurring as metasomatic products in peridotite xenoliths from the Western Qinling, central China. The olivine xenocrysts in the kamafugites show compositional zonation. The cores have high Mg# (100×Mg/(Mg+Fe); 91.0–92.2) and Li abundances (5.63–21.7ppm), low CaO contents (≤0.12wt%) and low δ7Li values (−39.6 to −6.76‰), which overlap with the compositional ranges of the olivines in the melt pockets as well as those in peridotite xenoliths. The rims of the olivine xenocrysts display relatively low Mg# (85.9–88.2), high CaO contents (0.19–0.38wt%) and high δ7Li values (18.3–26.9‰), which are comparable to the olivine phenocrysts (Mg#: 86.4–87.1; CaO: 0.20–0.28wt%; Li: 12.4–36.8ppm; δ7Li: 18.1–26.0‰) and the silicate-melt metasomatized olivines. The clinopyroxene phenocrysts and clinopyroxenes in the melt pockets have no distinct characteristics with respect to the Li abundances and δ7Li values, but show higher and lower CaO contents, respectively, than the clinopyroxenes from silicate and carbonatite metasomatized samples. These features indicate that Li concentration and isotopic signatures of the cores of the xenocrysts recorded carbonatite melt-peridotite reaction (carbonatite metasomatism) at mantle depth, and the variations in the rims probably resulted from xenocryst–host magma interaction during ascent. Our results reveal that the interaction with carbonatite and silicate melts gave rise to an increase in Li abundance in minerals of peridotite xenoliths at mantle depth or during transportation. In terms of δ7Li, the carbonatite and silicate melts produced remarkably contrasting δ7Li variations in olivine. Based on the systematic variations of Li abundances and Li isotopes in olivines, we suggest that the δ7Li value of olivine is a more important indicator than that of clinopyroxene in discriminating carbonatite and silicate melt interaction agents with peridotites.
Linking beryllium enrichment to crystal-melt separation in granitic magmatic systems: Insights from high-silica granites in the southern Great Xing’an Range, NE China

Abstract:High-silica granites are significant carriers of highly incompatible elements and are closely associated with mineralization of the rare metal beryllium. Thus, understanding their origin and evolution is of paramount importance for comprehending the evolution of the continental crust and enrichment processes of beryllium. This study presents zircon U-Pb ages, whole-rock major and trace element compositions, and Nd-Hf-O isotopic data for Early Cretaceous high-silica granite porphyries, monazite U-Pb ages and Nd isotopic data for beryllium-rich quartz veins, and whole-rock and apatite Nd isotopic data for Permian tuffs in the Dongshanwan W-Mo-Be deposit in the southern Great Xing’an Range, northeastern China. Our aim is to elucidate the link between mineralization and magmatism and to further our insight into the processes of crystal-melt separation and the mechanisms driving beryllium enrichment in granitic magmatic systems. Zircon U-Pb dating of the high-silica granite porphyry yields a weighted mean 206Pb/238U age of 141 ± 1 Ma, which is consistent with the age of hydrothermal monazite (ca. 140 Ma) from the beryllium-rich quartz veins. Hydrothermal monazite from the intra-granite porphyry quartz vein has positive εNd(t) values (+0.76 to +1.63) that overlap broadly with whole-rock Nd isotopic compositions of the host granite porphyry [εNd(t) = +1.24 to +1.61]. These characteristics indicate that the Dongshanwan beryllium mineralization was temporally and genetically associated with magmatic-hydrothermal activity of the Dongshanwan high-silica granite porphyries. Our systematic studies suggest that both the Dongshanwan high-silica granite porphyries and coeval Be-barren high-silica granites in the study area are high-K calc-alkaline I-type granites. They originated from a shared magmatic system and formed by the partial melting of a predominantly juvenile medium- to high-K basaltic crustal source, with a minor addition of old crustal components. Rayleigh fractionation modeling indicates that the granitic magma underwent a two-stage crystal-melt separation process. During the first stage, the fractional crystallization of a large proportion of plagioclase, in which beryllium is compatible, not only effectively inhibited beryllium enrichment in the differentiated melt, but also removed a large amount of Ca. During the second stage, minerals in which beryllium is incompatible dominated the fractionating assemblage owing to the low Ca contents in the magma, resulting in a surge in beryllium concentration in the differentiated melt. Our findings reveal that beryllium cannot be appreciably enriched in calc-alkaline granitic magmatic systems until plagioclase fractionation has substantially removed Ca from the system.

Distinguishing silicate and carbonatite mantle metasomatism by using lithium and its isotopes

Abstract:To investigate the effects of silicate and carbonatite metasomatism on mantle heterogeneity, we report lithium (Li) concentrations and isotopic compositions for olivine (Ol), orthopyroxene (Opx) and clinopyroxene (Cpx) from two suites of mantle xenoliths (Hannuoba, the North China Craton, and Haoti, the Western Qinling Orogen). The Hannuoba xenoliths range from lherzolite to pyroxenite and were affected by silicate metasomatism, whereas the Haoti xenoliths vary from harzburgite to wehrlite and were affected by carbonatite metasomatism. Lithium concentrations and isotopic compositions display a dichotomy between Hannuoba and Haoti xenoliths, and the overall variation exceeds what was previously reported. The minerals from Haoti xenoliths are more enriched in Li (Ol: 1.23–13.2ppm; Opx: 3.00–82.8ppm; Cpx: 1.39–112ppm) than those from Hannuoba samples (Ol: 1.34–5.52ppm; Opx: 0.23–16.1ppm; Cpx: 1.18–79.8ppm). Lithium isotopic compositions of these samples are highly variable in both suites of samples. δ7Li ranges from +3.0‰ to +41.9‰ in Ol, from −21.0‰ to +20.2‰ in Opx and from −17.4‰ to +18.9‰ in Cpx for Hannuoba samples. Haoti minerals display a similar degree of variation with δ7Li ranging from −29.1‰ to +19.9‰ in Ol, −16.9‰ to +18.0‰ in Opx and −45.1‰ to +19.6‰ in Cpx. On average, Li isotopic compositions of minerals from Hannuoba xenoliths follow the sequence of δ7LiOl>δ7LiOpx>δ7LiCpx, whereas those from Haoti xenoliths are characterized by the opposite sequence of δ7LiCpx>δ7LiOpx>δ7LiOl; in particular there is considerable difference in δ7Li values of Ol. The Li elemental and isotopic data suggest that mantle metasomatism by distinct agents is an important process for generating the large heterogeneity of Li abundances and isotopic distribution in the lithospheric mantle. The distinct geochemical characteristics of Li isotopes in silicate and carbonatite metasomatism are closely related to the preferential incorporation of Li into minerals from distinct melts. These findings further demonstrate that the Li isotopic systematics may in turn help to discriminate between silicate and carbonatite metasomatism.

Abstract:Partial melts derived from crustal anatexis exhibit large variations in field characteristics, composition, and isotope geochemistry. The relative influence of melting process and magmatic differentiation on such heterogeneity is a subject of ongoing debate. Boron and Mo isotopes have the potential to shed light on the genesis of crustal melts, but the behaviors of B and Mo isotopes during crustal anatexis and differentiation are unclear. Here, we present geochemical and isotopic data, including whole-rock Sr–Nd–B–Mo and mineral B–Mo data, for the Conadong leucogranites in the Himalayan Block, to provide new insights into these issues. The studied samples include two-mica granites (biotite + muscovite), muscovite granites (muscovite ± garnet), and biotite-rich granites. The two-mica granites were derived from muscovite dehydration melting of metasedimentary rocks. Their initial Sr and Nd isotopic compositions show positive correlation, implying non-modal partial melting associated with dissolution of accessory phases. The B contents (3.44–21.2 ppm) of the two-mica granites decrease but their δ11B (−15.80‰ to −13.25‰) and δ98Mo (−0.15‰ to 0.34‰) values increase with increasing Sr and Ba contents. This may have been controlled by different phases involved in non-modal melting (i.e., muscovite and feldspar). The muscovite leucogranites display features of residual liquids. Their δ11B (−15.38‰ to −11.90‰) and δ98Mo (−0.15‰ to 0.17‰) values negatively correlate with Sr and Ba contents, which can be ascribed to shallow-crustal crystal–liquid separation and melt–fluid interaction. The biotite-rich granites are least evolved, with large variations in their initial Sr–Nd isotopic compositions. They show relatively heavy whole-rock B isotopic compositions of −11.97‰ to −9.00‰. These may indicate that biotite-rich granites may be contaminated by entrained restitic minerals (e.g., biotite, feldspar and accessory minerals). Overall, this study demonstrates that compositional diversity of anatectic melts is controlled primarily by melting processes in the source and secondarily by emplacement-level crystal–liquid separation. Both non-modal partial melting and crystal–liquid separation could result in B–Mo isotopic fractionation in anatectic melts.

Abstract:The geological implications of granitoid magmas with high Sr/Y and La/Yb are debated because these signatures can be produced by multiple processes. This study presents comprehensive major and trace element compositions and zircon SHRIMP U–Pb age data of 81 early Cretaceous granitoids and 4 mafic enclaves from the Dabie orogen to investigate partial melting of the thickened lower continental crust (LCC). On the basis of Sr/Y ratios, granitoids can be grouped into two magma series: (i) high Sr/Y granitoids (HSG) and (ii) normal granitoids with low Sr/Y. Relative to normal granitoids, HSG display the following distinct chemical features: (1) at given SiO2 and CaO contents, the HSG have significantly higher Sr than normal granitoids, defining two different trends in Sr versus SiO2, CaO diagrams; (2) highly depleted heavy rare earth element (REE) relative to middle and light REE with (Dy/Yb)N and (La/Yb)N up to 3.2 and 151, respectively; (3) variable and higher Nb/Ta; and (4) positive correlations among Sr/Y, (Dy/Yb)N, (La/Yb)N, and Nb/Ta.

Abstract:Though Li isotope fractionation during mantle melting and differentiation of basaltic melts have been proved insignificant, Li isotopic systems during crustal processes remain unclear. To study this, we report combined petrological, Nd-Sr and Li isotopic data for the late Paleozoic coexisting I- and A-type granites in the East Junggar orogen of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt. The granites were formed responding to underplating of mafic magmas in the lower crust in a postcollisional, extensional regime, and intruded into the Paleozoic foldbelts that formed due to extensive oceanic subduction-accretion processes.

Abstract:Petrogenesis of two-mica granites and the associated Li mineralization from the Jiajika super-large Li deposit in Sichuan Province, southwest China, remains equivocal. This study analyzed Li contents and isotopic compositions of metasedimentary rocks (schists and slates) and two-mica granites in this deposit to investigate the issue. The metasedimentary rocks show large variations in Li (71.7 ppm to 1792 ppm) and δ7Li (–14.1 ‰ to +7.9 ‰), while the two-mica granites have Li contents from 60.2 ppm to 388 ppm and δ7Li values from –3.1 ‰ to +1.9 ‰. Integrated with bulk geochemistry and available Nd–Hf isotopes from this deposit, the two-mica granites probably originated from partial melting of the middle-upper crustal pelitic metasediments. The lower average δ7Li value of metasedimentary rocks (–2.9 ‰) than that of two-mica granites (–0.4 ‰) is possibly attributed to 6Li-rich garnets entering residuum during incongruent melting. We speculate that Li isotopic fractionation might have occurred during crustal anatexis. The partial melting that contributed to the transfer of volatiles and rare-metal elements into the granitic melts played an important role in Li mineralization. Li isotopes can potentially guide Li deposit prospecting as Li-bearing veins are likely to occur in regions with light 6Li.

Abstract:Crystal-melt separation is important for understanding the evolution of granitic magma and the connection between plutonic and volcanic rocks. Crystal accumulation and melt extraction are the two key factors in the separation process. However, the existing geochemical indicators for crystal-melt separation in many granitic plutons are largely concealed by the remaining interstitial melt. Here, we report Ba isotope compositions of well-characterized Huili granitic pluton and associated mineral separates from the Jiaobei Terrane in the North China Craton. The Ba isotopes are significantly fractionated between the two types of granites in the Huili pluton. The more differentiated albite granites (AG) have heavier isotope compositions (delta Ba-138/134(AG) = 0.50-0.95 parts per thousand) than the K-feldspar granites (KG) (delta Ba-138/134(KG) =-0.14 to 0.16 parts per thousand). The delta Ba-138/134 of the whole-rocks change in the same manner as multiple element contents (such as K, Ba, and Sr). Trace element modeling suggests that such variations can be explained by K-feldspar-controlled crystal-melt separation in a K-rich granitic magma. As the K-feldspar granites represent the residual crystal mush, the Ba isotope data of the coexisting Ba-bearing minerals can impose critical constraints on crystal-melt separation. The K-feldspar shows the highest Ba content (387-1465 mu g/g) and the lowest delta Ba-138/134 (-0.23 to 0.01 parts per thousand) among all the investigated minerals, suggesting that its crystallization should drive the interstitial Naand Si-rich melt towards an isotopically heavy composition. The apparent fractionation values of coexisting biotite and muscovite (Delta Ba-138/134(Biotite-Muscovite)) vary from-0.98 to 1.01 parts per thousand, indicating that the coexisting minerals are not in Ba isotope equilibrium. Combined with microstructural features, the Ba isotope disequilibrium signatures of coexisting minerals most likely reflect crystal accumulation and repacking during crystal-melt separation, providing a novel geochemical indicator for identifying the granitic plutons that represent residual crystal mush in the midto upper-crust. This study indicates that Ba isotopes are useful for deciphering petrogenetic links between intrusive and extrusive rocks. (c) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
