Correlation among empathy ability,communication competen-cy and general self-efficacy of junior nurses

Abstract:Objective To explore the correlation between empathy ability and communication competency, general self-efficacy of junior nurses. Methods Questionnaires were conducted among 1395 junior nurses using self-made general information questionnaire to count general informations, empathy levels evaluated using the Jefferson Empathy Scale（JES）, communication competencies using the Clinical Communication Competency Scale（CCCS）, and general self-efficacy levels using the General Self-efficacy Scale（GSES）. Pearson correlation analyses were used for correlations between nurses’ empathy ability and communication competency, general self-efficacy, single factor and multiple linear regression analyses for factors influencing nurses’ empathy ability. Results Total JES scores in junior nurses were（115.06±12.95） and were positively correlated with CCCS and GSS total scores（r=0.519,0.209, P＜0.01）. Factors influencing empathy ability of junior nurses were communication competency, job satisfaction, average monthly income and departments.Conclusion The overall empathy abilities of junior nurses are stronger and influencing factors more, are closely related to clinical communication ability and self-efficacy, targeted measures may be taken to further improve their empathy abilities.
