Relationship Between Personality Traits and Social Support Preference in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Abstract:Objective To analyze the personality types of patients with type 2 diabetes based on the Big Five Personality theory, and to explore the relationship between personality types and social support preference.Methods From July to November 2018,patients with type 2 diabetes were selected by cluster sampling and investigate by questionnaire.The Chinese Big Five Personality Inventory brief version scale and self-made social support style scale were used.Latent profile analysis was used to explore personality categories and multivariable analysis was used to explore the differences in social support preferences of patients with different personality types and the influencing factors.Results A total of 751 patients with type 2 diabetes were included.They were divided into four types of personality: introverted and stable type（42.7%）,active and responsible type（29.3%）,anxiety type（15.3%）and negative type（12.7%）.The effective sample size of doctor support was 723 and family support was 719.Compared with introverted and stable type, patients of negative type preferred doctor directive support（t=2.459,P=0.014）and less preferred family in directive support（t=-2.722,P=0.007）,but the preference for family support was more unclear（F=3.439,P=0.030）.Conclusion Attention should be paid to personality factors when giving social support to diabetes patients.
