Abstract:The widespread use of non-biodegradable plastic-based straws significantly contributes to environmental issues and health risks through white pollution and microplastic contamination. However, commercial biodegradable straws, such as polylactic acid (PLA) and paper straws, suffer from low mechanical performance, high cost, and complex manufacturing processes. Here, a scalable, adhesive-free wood straw was prepared using a facile, top-down approach consisting of cell wall activation and self-bonding. The activation resulted in partial wrinkling of the cell walls, exposing more hydroxyl groups and inducing lignin depolymerization, which led to improved plasticity and self-bonding performance. Simultaneously, the cell walls were compressed during self-bonding, causing lignin reorganization, which led to the formation of hydrogen bonds and physical entanglement with cellulose. As a result, mechanical interlocking structures and multiscale hydrogen bond networks were formed. The wood straws exhibited a compressive strength of 31.7 ± 1.6 MPa and a bending strength of 12.6 ± 0.6 MPa. These properties were superior to those of commercial straws made of PP, PLA, and paper. Additionally, the wood straws demonstrated excellent water resistance and thermal stability. The top-down wood straws preserved the natural anisotropic structure of the wood. This resulted in superior mechanical strength without the need for adhesives and avoided the costly and complex separation and reassembly processes. Furthermore, compared to commercial straws, the production of wood straws was simple, highly scalable, and cost-effective. The wood straws were also biodegradable and aesthetically pleasing. Thus, these adhesive-free wood straws offer a promising solution to environmental pollution caused by plastic straws and the potential to replace existing commercial straws.
