Abstract:The Greenland ice sheet(GrIS) has become one of the major contributors to global mean sea level rise due to the potential influence from Arctic warming.Gravity recovery and climate experiment follow on(GRACE-FO) observations confirmed that the GrIS experienced a new record mass loss in 2019. Nevertheless, how its mass change varies after 2019 has not been investigated.Based on GRACE/GRACE-FO time-variable gravity field data, a detailed analysis of the GrIS mass variations since April 2002 was performed. Our results show that the GrIS experienced a moderate mass loss(about-196±3 Gt/a from 2002-04 to 2009-12),a rapid mass loss(about-422±7 Gt/a from 2010-01 to 2012-12),a moderate mass loss(about-170±15 Gt/a from 2013-01to 2017-06) and again a rapid mass loss(about-297±4 Gt/a from 2018-05 to 2021-09).Compared to the timespan 2018-09—2020-08(about-405±8 Gt/a),the mass loss rate of the GrIS slowed down significantly(about-139±7 Gt/a) during 2019-09—2021-08.The summer mass loss of the GrIS dominated its annual cumulative mass variations, except for year 2020 in which the total mass accumulations in spring, autumn and winter are the maximum in past two decades, largely reducing its annual mass loss. This study also demonstrates that precipitation and meltwater runoff are the main factors affecting the GrIS mass variations.
