Abstract:Based on the theory of new structural economics, the relationship between regional development strategy and energy consumption is analyzed theoretically and empirically. Theoretical analysis shows that regional development strategies that violate comparative advantages increase per capita energy consumption. Furthermore, using China’s provincial panel data from 1997 to 2019 for empirical testing, the empirical results support the above theoretical hypothesis after endogenous treatment and robustness testing such as selecting the number of old industrial bases as a tool variable for regional development strategies. The heterogeneity analysis found that regional development strategies had different impacts on energy consumption in regions at different stages of development. Further discussion found that regional development strategies that violate comparative advantages will also lead to the delay of the second inflection point of the energy Kuznets curve, and the peak will also become larger, hindering the convergence of the energy Kuznets curve. In order to realize “Chinese-style modernization” in which man and nature live in harmony, it is recommended that the government adopt a regional development strategy that is in line with its comparative advantages, and strongly support the training and continuing education of innovation and related talents.
