Abstract:Employees are the core of a company, and enterprise innovation depends on employees’ innovation behavior. Therefore, the task of promoting employees’ innovation behavior effectively is a top priority for enterprise development.Understanding the factors that influence employees’ innovation behavior is critical. However, various studies have found that time pressure is negatively correlated, positively correlated, and even uncorrelated with employees’ innovation behavior. This lack of clarity indicates that there may be an important moderating or mediating variable underlying the relationship between time pressure and employees’ innovation behavior. The questions of how and when time pressure may be most successful in eliciting employees’ innovation behavior require further exploration. In view of lack of consistency regarding the relationship between time pressure and employees’ innovation behavior in existing empirical research, this paper explores the internal mechanisms underlying time pressure and employees’ innovation behavior in depth. After establishing a structural equation model, this paper discusses the questions of whether and how time pressure affects employees’innovation behavior.Specifically,we investigate the mediating role played by psychological distance and the moderating role played by hostile attribution bias in the relationship between time pressure and psychological distance. We reference questionnaire survey data concerning 60 leaders and 366 subordinates at 34 companies in Beijing,Tianjin, and Hebei as our empirical sample.SPSS and AMOS software are used to test our hypotheses. The empirical research results are as follows.(1) Endogenous time pressure is positively related to employees’ innovation behavior.(2) Exogenous time pressure is negatively related to employees’ innovation behavior.(3) Psychological distance mediates the relationship between time pressure and employees’ innovation behavior.(4) Hostility attribution bias significantly moderates the relationship between exogenous time pressure and psychological distance and moderates the indirect effect of exogenous time pressure on employees’ innovation behavior via psychological distance. However, the moderating effect of hostility attribution bias on the relationship between endogenous time pressure and psychological distance is not significant, nor does hostility attribution bias moderate the mediating effect of psychological distance on the relationship between endogenous time pressure and employees’ innovation behavior. This research offers several theoretical contributions and has certain implications for management.Theoretically, this study divides time pressure into endogenous time pressure and exogenous time pressure and explores the influence of endogenous and exogenous time pressure on employees’ innovation behavior from the perspective of leadership intervention with respect to the process of accomplishing work.In an environment featuring difficult tasks, changing demands, and time pressure, leadership intervention in the completion of the work process is an important reason that research and development personnel experience time pressure. To some extent, this classification enriches and supplements traditional research concerning the process of coping with time pressure, the degree of time pressure, and the nature of challenge-hindrance time pressure. This study not only broadens the research perspective concerning time pressure but also provides a new way for managers to evaluate stressors and understand employees’ working status. In addition, this study explores the mediating role played by psychological distance with respect to the relationship between endogenous-exogenous time pressure and employees’ innovation behavior.Psychological distance mediates the relationship between endogenous-exogenous time pressure and employees’ innovation behavior, and so this study expands research results concerning the mechanism by which time pressure exerts its influence. This study further enriches the research pertaining to the boundary conditions of time pressure and answers the question of “Does hostility attribution bias moderate the relationship between endogenous-exogenous time pressure and employee innovation behavior?” from the perspective of individual cognitive differences. The results of this study also indicate that the influence of endogenous and exogenous time pressure on innovation behavior is situational and may have opposing effects under different conditions. In practice, this study provides a new approach to the stimulation of employees’ innovation behavior in terms of three aspects:adjusting employees’ time pressure, attaching importance to the psychological distance between employees and organizations, and utilizing hostility attribution bias effectively.
