The mediating effect of self-worth on the relationship between emotional intelligence and work engagement in clinical nurses

Abstract:Objective To explore the mediating effect of self-worth on the relationship between emotional intelligence and job engagement of clinical nurses. Methods From July to August 2022,convenience sampling was adopted in three general hospitals in three provinces. General information questionnaire,Chinese version of Emotional Intelligence Scale,Adult Self-worth Questionnaire and Utrecht Work Engagement Scale were applied for investigation. The questionnaire survey of was conducted among 1 213 nurses. Results The scores of 1 213 nurses’ emotional intelligence,self-worth,and work engagement of clinical nurses were(77.37 ±16.24),(102.40 ±12.86),and(58.52 ±10.91) respectively. Meanwhile,emotional intelligence was positively correlated with work engagement(r =0.701,P<0.001),emotional intelligence was positively correlated with self-worth(r=0.509,P<0.001),and self-worth was positively correlated with work engagement(r =0.637,P <0.001). The total effect of emotional intelligence on work engagement was 0.763,the direct effect was 0.423,the indirect effect was 0.340(95% CI :0.288 ~0.396) which accounted for 44.56% of the total effect ratio. Conclusion Clinical nurses’ emotional intelligence,self-worth and work engagement are at moderate levels,and self-worth plays a partial mediating effect between emotional intelligence and work engagement.
