Abstract:Throughout the satellite era, an increasingly positive trend in the extent and duration of seasonal surface melt has been observed across the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS). Surface melt, and meltwater runoff now accounts for over half of GrIS mass loss annually, signifying the importance of surface mass balance on the future contribution to global sea level rise. A vast expanse of supraglacial channel networks and lakes now dominate the ablation zone during the melt season, transporting, storing, and evacuating increasingly large volumes of meltwater from the ice surface. The interception of this water, either by moulins or through linked crevasses, can propagate through the ice column and flood the ice-bed interface, influencing ice velocity and, in turn ice discharge over the grounding line.To date, much of the hydrological interest on the GrIS has centred around its western and south-western margins, often limited to short windows (days) during the melt season. This study expands surface hydrological mapping to other regions of the GrIS, specifically its northern sector, and explores network evolution across both seasonal (intra-) and inter-annual timescales.This study utilises a satellite-derived Normalised Difference Water Index (NDWI) alongside an automatic river detection algorithm to effectively delineate active supraglacial channel networks and (hydrologically-connected) saturated slush zones using Sentinel-2 and Landsat optical imagery. This work reveals a transformation of the northern supraglacial channel network from a highly-fragmented system of short channels extending a maximum of ~40 km inland during the 1980’s, to one dominated by long, parallel channels extending ~80 km inland from 2016. The observations presented in this study have significant implications on both the speed and efficiency of supraglacial meltwater drainage of the GrIS, holding a great potential to impact the dynamic response of outlet glaciers, and ice sheet mass loss.

Abstract:Supraglacial lakes and rivers dominate the storage and transport of meltwater on the southwest Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) surface. Despite functioning as interconnected hydrologic networks, supraglacial lakes and rivers are commonly studied as independent features, resulting in an incomplete understanding of their collective impact on meltwater storage and routing. We use Landsat 8 satellite imagery to assess the seasonal evolution of supraglacial lakes and rivers on the southwest GrIS during the 2015 melt season. Remotely sensed meltwater areas and volumes are compared with surface runoff simulations from three climate models (MERRA-2, MAR 3.6 and RACMO 2.3), and with in situ observations of proglacial discharge in the Watson River. We find: (1) at elevations >1600 m, 21% of supraglacial lakes and 28% of supraglacial rivers drain into moulins, signifying the presence of high-elevation surface-to-bed meltwater connections even during a colder-than-average melt season; (2) while supraglacial lakes dominate instantaneous surface meltwater storage, supraglacial rivers dominate total surface meltwater area and discharge; (3) the combined surface area of supraglacial lakes and rivers is strongly correlated with modeled surface runoff; and (4) of the three models examined here, MERRA-2 runoff yields the highest overall correlation with observed proglacial discharge in the Watson River.
High-altitude Salt Lake Elevation Changes and Glacial Ablation in Central Tibet, 2000–2010

Abstract:This research quantifies lake level variations in the Siling Co, Co’e and Bangor Co salt lakes in Central Tibet from 1976 to 2010, and most notably for the 2000–2010 periods. In particular, the effects of different water replenishment modes on the lakes have been analyzed. Here we have provided new evidences for climate warming and accelerated glacial ablation on the Central Tibetan Plateau from 2000 to 2010. Based on fieldwork involving Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) surveying and Remote Sensing (RS) interpretations of the lake area, we have drawn the following conclusions. (1) From 1976 to 2010, the process of lake level variation in Siling Co can be divided into two stages. From 1976 to 2000, the lake level rose 4.3 m in a steady fashion (from 4530 to 4534.3 m); the rise rate was 0.18 m/a. From 2000 to 2010, the lake level rapidly rose 8.2 m (from 4534.3 to 4542.5 m), with a dramatically higher rise rate of 0.82 m/a. Compared with the rapidly increasing lake level of Siling Co from 2000 to 2010, the fluctuations observed at Co’e and Bangor Co were smooth and inconspicuous. (2) From 1976 to 2009, the lake area of Siling Co experienced a steady-rapid-steady expansion pattern. The lake area of Siling Co increased 656.64 km2 in the 34 years to 2010, a proportional growth of 39.4%. This was particularly significant in the 2000–2010 period, when the lake area of Siling Co increased by 549.77 km2, a proportional growth of 30.6%. (3) According to correlation analysis, the rise in regional temperatures, which has led to the ablation of glaciers, is the main reason for the rapid rise in Siling Co lake levels in the 10 years to 2010. During this period, Siling Co rose approximately 8 m as the direct result of glacial melting. An increase in precipitation in the Siling Co catchment area is the secondary factor. This contrasts with Bangor Co, where the dominant factor in lake level change is the long-term increase in precipitation; here, the increasing temperature is the secondary factor.

Abstract:Supraglacial lakes form on the Greenland ice sheet during the melting season as meltwater accumulates in topographic depressions on the surface. They have the potential to increase ablation by reducing albedo and enhance ice flow when water drains to the bed. Despite recent progress in understanding the surface hydrology of the Greenland ice sheet, the seasonal and year-to-year variations of supraglacial lakes remain poorly understood. Here, we employed a machine learning method trained with random forest classifiers on Landsat 8 and Sentinel-2 imagery within Google Earth Engine for detecting supraglacial lakes. We applied this method to two large marine-terminating glaciers (Heilprin Glacier and Tracy Glacier) in northwestern Greenland to investigate the distribution, inter-annual and seasonal evolutions of supraglacial lakes between 2014 and 2021. Over the eight study years, cumulated maximum lake extent on Heilprin Glacier (22.84 km 2 ) was approximately three times larger than that of Tracy Glacier (7.60 km 2 ) despite the similarity in the glacier areas (654 km 2 and 540 km 2 ). The lake extent exhibited significant interannual variability controlled by summer PDD (sum of positive degree days), and the upper limit of lake formation coincided approximately with ELA (equilibrium line altitude). Greater lake areas were observed in 2016 and 2019, but obviously below-average areas in 2017–2018. The variabilities were pronounced in the region above 800 m a.s.l., particularly at Tracy Glacier. On the seasonal scale, lakes begin forming in early- to mid-June and disappear toward the end of August. The lake formation was triggered by the initiation of runoff in the regions below 800 m a.s.l., while it coincided with the onset of surface melt at the higher elevations due to the presence of ice/snow-buried lakes. Cascading rapid lake drainage events were observed in the mid-elevation areas (400–800 m a.s.l.) of Heilprin Glacier, which induced an abrupt decrease in the lake area at the beginning of July in the years of 2019 and 2020. Our study demonstrates the potential of the machine learning method to analyze supraglacial lakes in dense satellite images. The results imply inland expansion of supraglacial lakes under warming climate in Greenland and a possible interaction between draining lake water and glacier dynamics.

Abstract:Surface runoff constitutes a large percentage of Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) mass loss at present but is difficult to measure directly. This study provides a novel method to estimate surface runoff through remote sensing of supraglacial lake volumes. Because terminal, non-draining (consistently expanding during the melt season) lakes impound runoff from their surrounding contributing catchments, such changes reflect runoff produced within the catchment. To estimate supraglacial lake volumes, multi-temporal lake maps derived from Landsat-8 images are intersected with dry lake-bed topographic depressions (showing lake bathymetry) identified for two supraglacial catchments (similar to 10 km(2)) in southwestern GrIS, using high-resolution (2 m) ArcticDEMs. Intersecting remotely sensed lake shorelines with their underlying ice surface topography yields multi-temporal lake volume changes, which are then compared with cumulative runoff as simulated by four Surface Mass Balance (SMB) models (HIRHAM5, MAR3.6, RACMO2.3, and MERRA-2). Comparison of cumulative lake infilling with SMB simulations for these two lakes over the period 8-31 July 2015 indicates that SMB models overestimated surface runoff by 106 - 123%. These large offsets improved after early July, overestimating runoff by 40 - 55%. The runoff delay function incorporated into the MAR3.6 model improves simulation of early melt season runoff, signifying the importance of integrating meltwater routing schemes into SMB models for improved understanding of Greenland supraglacial hydrology and surface mass balance.

Abstract:Supraglacial rivers and lakes are important for the routing and storage of surface meltwater during the summer melt season across the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS), yet remain poorly mapped and quantified across the northern part of the ice sheet, which is rapidly losing mass. Here we produce, for the first time, a high-resolution record of the supraglacial drainage network (including both rivers and lakes) and its seasonal behaviour at Humboldt Glacier, a wide-outlet glacier draining a large hydrologic catchment (13,488 km2), spanning the period 2016 to 2020 using 10 m spatial resolution Sentinel-2 imagery. Our results reveal a perennially extensive yet interannually-variable supraglacial network extending from an elevation of 200 m a.s.l to a maximum of ~1440 m a.s.l recorded in 2020, with limited development of the network observed in the low melt years of 2017 and 2018. The supraglacial drainage network is shown to cover an area ranging between 965.7 km2 (2018) and 1566.3 km2 (2019) at its maximum seasonal extent, with spatial coverage of up to 2685 km2 recorded during the early phases of the melt season when a slush zone is most prominent. Up-glacier expansion and the development of an efficient supraglacial drainage network as surface runoff increases and the snowline retreats is clearly visible. Preconditioning of the ice surface following a high melt year is also observed, with the earlier widespread exposure of the supraglacial drainage network in 2020 compared to other years; a finding that may become representative with persistent warmer years into the future. Overall, this study provides evidence of a persistent, yet dynamic, supraglacial drainage network at this prominent northern GrIS outlet glacier and advances our understanding of such hydrologic processes, particularly under ongoing climatic warming and enhanced runoff.
Intra-seasonal variability in supraglacial stream sediment on the Greenland Ice Sheet

Abstract:On the surface of the Greenland Ice Sheet, the presence of low-albedo features greatly contributes to ablation zone meltwater production. Some of the lowest albedo features on the Ice Sheet are water-filled supraglacial stream channels, especially those with abundant deposits of consolidated cryoconite sediment. Because these sediments enhance melting by disproportionately lowering albedo, studying their spatial extent can provide a better understanding of Greenland's contribution to global sea level rise. However, little is known about the spatial distribution of supraglacial stream sediment, or how it changes in response to seasonal flow regimes. Here, we surveyed a supraglacial stream network in Southwest Greenland, collecting imagery from seven uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) flights over the course of 24 days in 2019. Using Structure-from-Motion-generated orthomosaic imagery and digital elevation models (DEMs), we manually digitized the banks of the supraglacial stream channels, classified the areal coverage of sediment deposits, and modeled how the terrain influences the amount of incoming solar radiation at the Ice Sheet surface. We used imagery classified by surface types and in-situ spectrometer measurements to determine how changes in sediment cover altered albedo. We found that, within our study area, only 15% of cryoconite sediment was consolidated in cryoconite holes; the remaining 85% was located within supraglacial streams mostly concentrated on daily inundated riverbanks (hereafter termed floodplains). Sediment cover and stream width are highly correlated, suggesting that sediment influx into supraglacial drainage systems widens stream channels or darkens previously widened channels. This reduces albedo in floodplains that already receive greater solar radiation due to their flatness. Additionally, the areal extent of stream sediments increased in August following seasonal peak flow, suggesting that as stream power decreases, more sediment accumulates in supraglacial channels. This negative feedback loop for melting may delay Greenland's runoff to the latter end of the melt season. This study shows in unprecedented detail where and when sediment is deposited and how these deposits potentially impact the Ice Sheet surface energy balance. These findings may allow for better prediction of how supraglacial floodplains, and the microbiomes they contain, might change in response to increased melting.

Response of supraglacial rivers and lakes to ice flow and surface melt on the northeast Greenland ice sheet during the 2017 melt season

Abstract:Fast ice flow and substantial surface runoff form distinct and extensive supraglacial rivers and lakes on the northeast Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS). These supraglacial rivers and lakes play an important role in controlling surface meltwater routing and storage. However, the hydromorphology of these complex supraglacial features remains poorly quantified. In this study, we mapped the multi-temporal supraglacial rivers and lakes on the northeast GrIS (area ∼3 × 104 km2) using sixty-five 10 m Sentinel-2 multispectral satellite images acquired during the 2017 summer, and quantified their primary hydromorphology, including meltwater area fraction, meltwater volume, supraglacial river length, river sinuosity, river depth, supraglacial lake area, lake shape, and lake depth. The quantified hydromorphology was compared with variable ice flow regimes and regional climate model (RCM) runoff. The results indicate that widespread supraglacial rivers and lakes maximally cover 5.3% of the northeast GrIS, which is more than double the previous estimates and only slightly lower than that for the strongly melting southwest GrIS (∼7.0%). As the surface runoff increases and the snowline retreats, supraglacial rivers and lakes migrate from the ice sheet margin (∼400 m) to high elevations (∼1400 m). The satellite-mapped surface meltwater area fraction for the entire study area is positively correlated with the RCM surface runoff before the timing of peak melt (August 1), but decreases relatively slowly (by 32-45%) compared to the rapidly decreasing runoff (by 84-96%) in August. Large elevational variations were found for the peak magnitude and timing of the meltwater extent and volume. High (800-1400 m) elevation bands achieve peak values over two weeks later than low (400-800 m) elevation bands, and the 800-1000 m elevation band yields maximum peak values due to the wide distribution of supraglacial rivers. Furthermore, the supraglacial drainage patterns vary with different ice flow regimes. There are long rivers and few lakes in areas where ice deformation controls the ice flow velocity while there are short rivers and large, narrow lakes in areas where basal sliding is a major component of the ice flow. Meanwhile, long, sinuous rivers and small lakes form on the floating ice. In general, this study conducts a preliminary investigation of supraglacial rivers and lakes on the poorly-studied northeast GrIS and reveals that surface melt and ice flow control the hydromorphology of supraglacial rivers and lakes.

Subglacial Lake Activity Beneath the Ablation Zone of the Greenland Ice Sheet

Abstract:Hydrologically active subglacial lakes can drain large volumes of water and sediment along subglacial pathways, affecting the motion and mass balance of ice masses and impacting downstream sediment dynamics. To date, only eight active lakes have been reported beneath the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS), and thus the understanding of their spatial distribution and dynamic processes is still lacking. Here, using ICESat-2 (Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite-2) ATL11 data, we identify 18 active subglacial lakes, 16 of which have not been previously reported. Multi-temporal ArcticDEM (digital elevation model of the Arctic) strip maps were used to extend the time series to verify lakes and determine their drainage history. The identification of active subglacial lakes beneath the GrIS is complicated by the occurrence of supraglacial lakes, which also fill and drain and are hypothesized to be almost co-located. We therefore used the temporal pattern of ice-surface elevation change to discriminate subglacial lakes and utilized the ability of ICESat-2 to penetrate through surface water to correct the elevation provided by the ATL11 data. A significant localized elevation anomaly (-16.03-10.30 m yr(-1)) was measured in all detected subglacial lakes after correction, revealing that six subglacial lakes are twinned with supraglacial lakes. The active subglacial lakes have large upstream hydrological catchments and are located near or below the equilibrium line. Lakes have a median area of 1.20 km(2), and 12 lakes exhibited positive elevation-change rates during the ICESat-2 period. These observations illustrate the potential for combining ICESat-2 and the ArcticDEM to differentiate small subglacial lakes in the ablation zone and beneath supraglacial lakes.

The Seasonal Evolution of the Supraglacial Hydrologic Network at Humboldt Glacier, Northwest Greenland.

Abstract:Supraglacial channels and lakes across the Greenland Ice Sheet form a key component in the routing and storage of surface meltwater during the summer melt season, yet to-date, their temporal evolution remains poorly mapped and quantified across the Greenland Ice Sheet. We produce the first high-resolution record of the seasonal supraglacial drainage network (channels and lakes) at Humboldt Glacier, northwest Greenland, spanning the melt seasons of 2016 to 2020. Using an automatic detection algorithm applied to Sentinel-2 imagery, which utilises a satellite-derived normalised difference water index (NDWI) and morphological operators, supraglacial channels and lakes were effectively mapped and quantified across the study region, including meltwater area, meltwater area fraction, channel drainage density (Dd), lake density and comparisons of satellite-derived drainage mapping to regional climate model (MAR) runoff. Results reveal the migratory behaviour of the supraglacial drainage network at Humboldt Glacier as surface runoff increases and the snowline recedes through the melt season. In the high melt years of 2016, 2019 and 2020, Dd commonly peaks in early-July as the ‘inefficient’ system (with hydrologically-connected saturated slush zones) advances inland, before decreasing as the system reaches maximum ‘efficiency’ and inland extent (late-July) before waning as the melt season ends. During these years, this annually-expansive network consistently reaches elevations of ~1450 m (~80km inland), with surface meltwater area covering between 7.2 - 11.6% of the area <1500 m. Retardation to this behaviour is notably observed within the low melt years of 2017 and 2018, when Dd and melt area do not peak until August.Supraglacial lakes are also widely present within the drainage system, with their number and size also shown to peak with Dd before decreasing as the melt season progresses, attributed to increased moulin connectivity and subsequent lake drainage events. The combined meltwater area fraction (%) of both supraglacial channels and lakes is strongly correlated with MAR modelled surface runoff.This work provides important advancements in the mapping, quantification and understanding of the expansive yet ephemeral supraglacial hydrologic system that exists across northwest Greenland Ice Sheet and its influence on the routing and evacuation of meltwater from these systems and beyond.

Abstract:Supraglacial lakes on the Greenland Ice Sheet are expanding inland, but the impact on ice flow is equivocal because interior surface conditions may preclude the transfer of surface water to the bed. Here we use a well-constrained 3D model to demonstrate that supraglacial lakes in Greenland drain when tensile-stress perturbations propagate fractures in areas where fractures are normally absent or closed. These melt-induced perturbations escalate when lakes as far as 80 km apart form expansive networks and drain in rapid succession. The result is a tensile shock that establishes new surface-to-bed hydraulic pathways in areas where crevasses transiently open. We show evidence for open crevasses 135 km inland from the ice margin, which is much farther inland than previously considered possible. We hypothesise that inland expansion of lakes will deliver water and heat to isolated regions of the ice sheet’s interior where the impact on ice flow is potentially large.

Abstract:Thermally incised meltwater channels that flow each summer across melt-prone surfaces of the Greenland ice sheet have received little direct study. We use high-resolution WorldView-1/2 satellite mapping and in situ measurements to characterize supraglacial water storage, drainage pattern, and discharge across 6,812 km(2) of southwest Greenland in July 2012, after a record melt event. Efficient surface drainage was routed through 523 high-order stream/river channel networks, all of which terminated in moulins before reaching the ice edge. Low surface water storage (3.6 ± 0.9 cm), negligible impoundment by supraglacial lakes or topographic depressions, and high discharge to moulins (2.54-2.81 cm⋅d(-1)) indicate that the surface drainage system conveyed its own storage volume every <2 d to the bed. Moulin discharges mapped inside ∼52% of the source ice watershed for Isortoq, a major proglacial river, totaled ∼41-98% of observed proglacial discharge, highlighting the importance of supraglacial river drainage to true outflow from the ice edge. However, Isortoq discharges tended lower than runoff simulations from the Modèle Atmosphérique Régional (MAR) regional climate model (0.056-0.112 km(3)⋅d(-1) vs. ∼0.103 km(3)⋅d(-1)), and when integrated over the melt season, totaled just 37-75% of MAR, suggesting nontrivial subglacial water storage even in this melt-prone region of the ice sheet. We conclude that (i) the interior surface of the ice sheet can be efficiently drained under optimal conditions, (ii) that digital elevation models alone cannot fully describe supraglacial drainage and its connection to subglacial systems, and (iii) that predicting outflow from climate models alone, without recognition of subglacial processes, may overestimate true meltwater export from the ice sheet to the ocean.

Abstract:The spatiotemporal distribution and variability of surface water remained poorly known at the pan-Greenland scale, and its dominant features (supraglacial rivers, lakes, and water-filled crevasses) were rarely studied collectively. We present pan-GrIS surface water extent and volume for a relatively cool (2018) and a relatively warm (2019) summer, using 10 m resolution Sentinel-2 imagery, a semi-automated multi-scale water extraction algorithm, and the Regional Atmospheric Climate Model (RACMO). While the 10 m resolution of Sentinel-2 imagery prevents inclusion of all water-filled crevasses and narrow rivers, our findings include: (1) strong interannual differences are observed in total surface water area (4903km 2 vs. 9988 km 2 ), volume (3.5 km 3 vs. 6.8 km 3 ), and mean elevation limit (1407 m a.s.l. vs. 1545 m a.s.l.) in response to a low (cool) (265 Gt/yr) and high (warm) (510 Gt/yr) runoff year; (2) large spatial contrasts in surface water extent, volume, elevation limit, and drainage pattern among the eight major GrIS basins; (3) supraglacial rivers dominate GrIS surface water appearance, accounting for 57%/48% of total surface water area/volume, respectively, over the two years (in contrast, water-filled crevasses and supraglacial lakes account for 33%/32% and 10%/20%, respectively); (4) ratio of remotely sensed water volume to RACMO-simulated cumulative surface runoff declines during the cool (2.6%) vs. the warm (1.8%) year; and from north (4.5%) to south (1.1%) Greenland. In summary, this study reveals strong temporal and spatial differences in GrIS surface water extent, volume, and drainage pattern and raises prospects for improved understanding of pan-Greenland Ice Sheet surface hydrology.

Abstract:Abstract. Serling Co lake, surrounded by permafrost and glacier-occupied regions, has exhibited the greatest increase in water storage over the last 50 years among all the lakes on the Tibetan Plateau. However, increases in precipitation and glacial melting are not enough to explain the increased water volume of lake expansion. The magnitude of the contribution of thawing permafrost to this increase under climate warming remains unknown. This study made the first attempt to quantify the water contribution of ground ice melting to the expansion of Serling Co lake by evaluating the ground surface deformation. We monitored the spatial distribution of surface deformation in the Serling Co basin using the SBAS-InSAR technique and compared it with the findings of field surveys. Then, the ground ice meltwater volume in the watershed was calculated based on the long-term deformation rate. Finally, this volume was compared with the lake volume change during the same period, and the contribution ratio was derived. SBAS-InSAR monitoring during 2017–2020 illustrated widespread and large subsidence in the upstream section of the Zhajiazangbu subbasin, where widespread continuous permafrost is present. The terrain subsidence was normally between 5 and 20 mm/a, indicating rapid ground ice loss in the region. The ground ice meltwater reached 56.0 × 106 m3/a, and the rate of increase in lake water storage was 496.3 × 106 m3/a during the same period, with ground ice meltwater contributing 11.3 % of the lake volume increase. This study is especially helpful in explaining the rapid expansion of Serling Co lake and equilibrating the water balance at the watershed scale. More importantly, the proposed method can be easily extended to other watersheds underlain by permafrost and to help understand the hydrologic changes in these watersheds.

Abstract:The ice lakes in the southeastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau have exhibited a pronounced expansion against the backdrop of global warming, consequently amplifying the local risk of ice lake outburst disasters. However, surveys of ice lake changes in the entire region have consistently been incomplete due to the prevalent high cloud density. On the basis of Landsat remote sensing images and the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform, in this study, the full convolution segmentation algorithm is utilized to accurately and comprehensively map the regional distribution of ice lakes in southeastern Tibet at consistent time intervals in 1993, 2008, and 2023. Furthermore, the formation, distribution, and dynamic changes in these ice lakes are investigated. The numbers of ice lakes discovered in 1993, 2008, and 2023 were 2520, 3198, and 3877, respectively. These lakes covered areas of approximately 337.64 ± 36.86 km2, 363.92 ± 40.90 km2, and 395.74 ± 22.72 km2, respectively. These ice lakes are located primarily between altitudes of 4442 m and 4909 m. The total area experienced an annual growth rate of approximately 0.57 % from 1993 to 2023. In the present study, the long-term variations in ice lakes in each district and county are examined. These findings indicate that between 1993 and 2023, the expansion of ice lakes was more pronounced in regions with a large number of marine glaciers. Notably, Basu County presented the highest annual growth rate of the ice lake population, at 6.23 %, followed by Bomi County, at 4.28 %, and finally, Zayul County, at 2.94 %. The accelerated shrinkage of marine glaciers induced by global warming is the primary driver behind the expansion of ice lakes. The results obtained from this research will enhance our overall understanding of the complex dynamics and mechanisms that govern the formation of ice lakes while also offering valuable perspectives on the potential risks linked to their expansion in this particular area.
Over-winter persistence of supraglacial lakes on the Greenland Ice Sheet: results and insights from a new model

Abstract:Abstract We present a newly developed 1-D numerical energy-balance and phase transition supraglacial lake model: GlacierLake. GlacierLake incorporates snowfall, in situ snow and ice melt, incoming water from the surrounding catchment, ice lid formation, basal freeze-up and thermal stratification. Snow cover and temperature are varied to test lake development through winter and the maximum lid thickness is recorded. Average wintertime temperatures of −2 to $-30^{\circ }{\rm C}$ and total snowfall of 0 to 3.45 m lead to a range of the maximum lid thickness from 1.2 to 2.8 m after ${\sim }250$ days, with snow cover exerting the dominant control. An initial ice temperature of $-15^{\circ }{\rm C}$ with simulated advection of cold ice from upstream results in 0.6 m of basal freeze-up. This suggests that lakes with water depths above 1.3 to 3.4 m (dependent on winter snowfall and temperature) upon lid formation will persist through winter. These buried lakes can provide a sizeable water store at the start of the melt season, expedite future lake formation and warm underlying ice even in winter.

Abstract:Supraglacial lakes on Antarctic ice shelves can have far-reaching implications for ice-sheet stability, highlighting the need to understand their dynamics, controls and role in the ice-sheet mass budget. We combine a detailed satellite-based record of seasonal lake evolution in Dronning Maud Land with a high-resolution simulation from the regional climate model Modèle Atmosphérique Régional to identify drivers of lake variability between 2014 and 2021. Correlations between summer lake extents and climate parameters reveal complex relationships that vary both in space and time. Shortwave radiation contributes positively to the energy budget during summer melt seasons, but summers with enhanced longwave radiation are more prone to surface melting and ponding, which is further enhanced by advected heat from summer precipitation. In contrast, previous winter precipitation has a negative effect on summer lake extents, presumably by increasing albedo and pore space, delaying the accumulation of meltwater. Downslope katabatic or föhn winds promote ponding around the grounding zones of some ice shelves. At a larger scale, we find that summers during periods of negative southern annular mode are associated with increased ponding in Dronning Maud Land. The high variability in seasonal lake extents indicates that these ice shelves are highly sensitive to future warming or intensified extreme events.

Abstract:Supraglacial stream networks incise via thermal erosion of underlying ice, reflecting a balance between localized fluvial incision and dynamic topography from underlying ice flow. We analyze high‐resolution digital elevation models of the ice surface and bedrock in the southwest Greenland Ice Sheet from 1000‐1600 m elevation to quantify the importance of fluvial erosion. At wavelengths greater than ice thickness, bedrock dominates surface topography so supraglacial drainage basins are fixed spatially. At smaller wavelengths, fluvial erosion significantly affects topography. Stream longitudinal profiles exhibit positive mean curvature and consistent power law scaling between local channel slope and drainage area, suggestive of adjustment toward topographic steady state. We interpret these observations with a model for fluvial thermal erosion on top of a flowing ice substrate that predicts concave up steady state longitudinal profiles, where average concavity is most sensitive to melt rate and the relative magnitudes of ice flow and fluvial erosion.

Abstract:The evolutions of climate‐sensitive lakes on the Tibetan Plateau's endorheic basin exhibited lake shrinkage before the mid‐1990s, but widespread and rapid lake expansions ever since. However, the quantitative contribution of glacier meltwater to lake changes, and the exact mechanisms behind its dominant drivers remain elusive. Here, a comprehensive examination of glacier mass balance since ∼1975 reveals that excess glacier meltwater compensated for lake volume loss by 21 ± 5% during its contraction period 1975−1995, whereas promoted lake volume gain by 9 ± 1% during lake expansion period 1995−2020 and by 17 ± 2% over the entire period 1975−2020. Further analyses reveal that the interdecadal variations of sea surface temperatures in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans favor a net moisture inflow to the Tibetan Plateau, leading to increased precipitation since 1995 relative to 1970s–1995, effectively elucidates the climatic process causing rapid lake volume expansion in the endorheic basin.
