Abstract:Artificial intelligence has been back on the stage of research works in all the walks in recently years, the sharply increase of AI-based work have shown its potential to be a future direction for almost all disciplines. In oil and gas industry, AI technology is also doubtlessly a new shining star that draws attention from researchers devoted themselves into it. In order to dig up more about the applications of artificial intelligence in oilfield development for a hint of the future trend of this exciting technology in oil and gas industry, literature investigation of a large amount of AI-based work reported has been conducted in this work. Based on the investigation, the application of AI in important issues in oilfield development including oilfield production dynamic prediction, developing plan optimization, residual oil identification, fracture identification, and enhanced oil recovery are specifically investigated and summarized, the backs and cons of existing AI algorithms has been compared. Based on the analysis and discussion, current situation of the application of AI in oilfield development is concluded, and suggestions and potential directions of future work AI application in oil and gas developing are provided.

Abstract:Data are being continuously generated from various operational steps in the oil and gas industry. The recordings of these data and their proper utilization have become a major concern for the oil and gas industry. Decision making based on predictive as well as inferential data analytics helps in making accurate decisions within a short period of time. In spite of many challenges, the use of data analytics for decision making is increasing on a large-scale in the oil and gas industry. An appreciable amount of development has been done in the above area of research. Many complex problems may now be easily solved using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) techniques. Historical, as well as real-time data, can be assimilated to achieve higher production by gathering data from the gas/oil wells. Various analytical modeling techniques are now widely being used by the oil and gas sector to make a decision based on data analytics. This paper reviews the recent developments via applications of AI and ML techniques for efficient exploitation of the data obtained, starting from the exploration for crude oil to the distribution of its end products. A brief account of the acceptance and future of these techniques in the oil and gas industry is also discussed. Present work may provide a technical framework for choosing relevant technologies for effectively gaining the information from the large volume of data generated by the oil and gas industry.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence technology will be increasingly applied in the oil and gas industry. The rapid development of artificial intelligence technology can solve problems such as high environmental sensitivity and complex production processes in the oil and gas industry. In recent years, emerging technologies represented by artificial intelligence have developed rapidly, assisting petroleum enterprises in digital transformation and intelligent upgrading. This article elaborates on the development trend of artificial intelligence technology. Based on the business scenarios and characteristics of the oil and gas industry, the application status of artificial intelligence technology in domestic and foreign petroleum technology service enterprises was summarized and analyzed. The application scenarios of artificial intelligence technology in the fields of dynamic analysis of oil and gas reservoirs, intelligent historical fitting, numerical simulation proxy models, and production plan optimization were analyzed with emphasis. Based on the problems and challenges faced in the development process of oil and gas reservoirs, it is proposed that petroleum enterprises should attach importance to the "three modernizations" innovation of data standardization, oil and gas field intelligence, and platform collaboration, in order to achieve more refined intelligent analysis and management of oil and gas reservoirs and quickly develop more targeted oil and gas reservoir development plans to assist in the intelligent transformation of oil and gas reservoir development. On this basis, prospects for future artificial intelligence technology are proposed, pointing out that the development of artificial intelligence technology will be faster and faster, and there will be higher demand for artificial intelligence technology in the construction of digital oil and gas fields in China in the future. The research results have important reference value for the development of the oil and gas industry.

Abstract:Intelligent drilling and completion technology was an organic integration of drilling and completion engineering with advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data, and cloud computing. It could achieve precise characterization, optimized decision-making, and closed-loop control of the oil and gas drilling and completion process. It was expected to significantly improve drilling and completion efficiency, reservoir drilling rate, and oil and gas recovery rate. It was a research frontier and hotspot in the field of oil and gas. This article constructed an artificial intelligence application scenario system for oil and gas drilling and completion based on engineering practice. It also elaborated on the current research status of intelligent drilling and completion theory and technology at home and abroad. Apart from that, the article summarized the challenges and key research directions faced by intelligent drilling and completion technology research. The aim was to provide a reference for accelerating basic theoretical research, technology promotion, and application of intelligent drilling and completion technology in China.

Abstract:Abstract Artificial Intelligence (AI) has found extensive usage in simplifying complex decision-making procedures in practically every competitive market field, and oil and gas upstream industry is no exception to it. AI involves the use of sophisticated networking tools and algorithms in solving multifaceted problems in a way that imitates human intellect, with the aim of enabling computers and machines to execute tasks that could earlier be carried out only through demanding human brainstorming. Unlike other simpler computational automations, AI enables the designed tools to "learn" through repeated operation, thereby continuously refining the computing capabilities as more data is fed into the system. Over the years, AI has led to significant designing and computation optimizations in the global Petroleum Exploration and Production (E&P) industry, and its applications have only continued to grow with the advent of modern drilling and production technologies. Tools such as Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), Generic Algorithms, Support Vector Machines and Fuzzy Logic have a historic connection with the E & P industry for more than 16 years now, with the first application dated in 1989 for development of an intelligent reservoir simulator interface, and for well-log interpretation and drill bit diagnosis through neural networks. Devices and softwares with basis from the above mentioned AI tools have been proposed to abridge the technology gaps hindering automated execution and monitoring of key reservoir simulation, drilling and completion procedures including seismic pattern recognition, reservoir characterisation and history matching, permeability and porosity prediction, PVT analysis, drill bits diagnosis, overtime well pressure-drop estimation, well production optimization, well performance projection, well / field portfolio management and quick, logical decision making in critical and expensive drilling operations. The paper reviews and analyzes this successful integration of AI techniques as the missing piece of the puzzle in many reservoir, drilling and production aspects. It provides an update on the level of AI involvement in service operations and the application trends in the industry. A summary of various research papers and reports associated with AI usage in the upstream industry as well as its limitations has been presented.

Abstract:We analyze how artificial intelligence changes a significant part of the energy sector, the oil and gas industry. We focus on the upstream segment as the most capital-intensive part of oil and gas and the segment of enormous uncertainties to tackle. Basing on the analysis of AI application possibilities and the review of existing applications, we outline the most recent trends in developing AI-based tools and identify their effects on accelerating and de-risking processes in the industry. We investigate AI approaches and algorithms, as well as the role and availability of data in the segment. Further, we discuss the main non-technical challenges that prevent the intensive application of artificial intelligence in the oil and gas industry, related to data, people, and new forms of collaboration. We also outline three possible scenarios of how artificial intelligence will develop in the oil and gas industry and how it may change it in the future (in 5, 10, and 20 years).

The application in E & P industry has more than 16 years of history with first application dated 1989, for well log interpretation; drill bit diagnosis using neural networks and intelligent reservoir simulator interface. It has been propounded in solving many problems in the oil and gas industry which includes, seismic pattern recognition, reservoir characterisation, permeability and porosity prediction, prediction of PVT properties, drill bits diagnosis, estimating pressure drop in pipes and wells, optimization of well production, well performance, portfolio management and general decision making operations and many more. This paper reviews and analyzes the successful application of artificial intelligence techniques as related to one of the major aspects of the oil and gas industry, drilling capturing the level of application and trend in the industry. A summary of various papers and reports associated with artificial intelligence applications and it limitations will be highlighted. This analysis is expected to contribute to further development of this technique and also determine the neglected areas in the field.

The gas business generates data on a constant basis from several operational procedures. The gas sector is now very concerned about recording these data and using them appropriately. Making decisions based on inferential and predictive data analytics facilitates timely and accurate decision-making. The gas business is seeing a significant increase in the use of data analytics for decision-making despite numerous obstacles. Considerable progress has been made in the aforementioned field of study. With the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) techniques, many complicated issues may now be resolved with ease. This study, which looks at artificial intelligence applications in the natural gas sector, collected its data from numerous sources between 2005 and 2023. The current work might offer a technical framework for selecting pertinent technologies that will enable efficient information extraction from the massive amount of data produced by the gas industry.

Abstract With the recent interest and enthusiasm in the industry toward smart wells, intelligent fields, and real-time analysis and interpretation of large amounts of data for process optimization, our industry's need for powerful, robust, and intelligent tools has significantly increased. Operations such as asset evaluation; 3D- and 4D-seismic-data interpretation; complex multilateral-drilling design and implementation; log interpretation; building of geologic models; well-test design, implementation, and interpretation; reservoir modeling; and simulation are being integrated to result in comprehensive reservoir management. In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI), in its many integrated flavors from neural networks to genetic optimization to fuzzy logic, has made solid steps toward becoming more accepted in the mainstream of the oil and gas industry. In a recent set of JPT articles, fundamentals of these technologies were discussed. This article covers some of the most recent and advanced uses of intelligent systems in our industry and discusses their potential role in our industry's future. Abstract:Aiming at the actual demands of petroleum exploration and development, this paper describes the research progress and application of artificial intelligence (AI) in petroleum exploration and development, and discusses the applications and development directions of AI in the future. Machine learning has been preliminarily applied in lithology identification, logging curve reconstruction, reservoir parameter estimation, and other logging processing and interpretation, exhibiting great potential. Computer vision is effective in picking of seismic first breaks, fault identification, and other seismic processing and interpretation. Deep learning and optimization technology have been applied to reservoir engineering, and realized the real-time optimization of waterflooding development and prediction of oil and gas production. The application of data mining in drilling, completion, and surface facility engineering etc. has resulted in intelligent equipment and integrated software. The potential development directions of artificial intelligence in petroleum exploration and development are intelligent production equipment, automatic processing and interpretation, and professional software platform. The highlights of development will be digital basins, fast intelligent imaging logging tools, intelligent seismic nodal acquisition systems, intelligent rotary-steering drilling, intelligent fracturing technology and equipment, real-time monitoring and control of zonal injection and production.

Abstract:Artificial Intelligence Once the stuff of science fiction, artificial intelligence (AI) has become ubiquitous in our daily life, and the modern oil and gas industry is no exception. Artificial neural networks, fuzzy logic, and evolutionary algorithms are common among AI techniques being applied today in oil and gas reservoir simulation, production and drilling optimization, drilling automation and process control, and data mining. “Today, when you talk to information technology (IT) people, they mention four trends: social media, mobile devices, the cloud, and big data,” said Reid Smith, manager of IT Upstream Services at Marathon Oil, and a fellow of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence. Social media are in everyday use for collaboration; mobile devices are proving valuable in field operations; cloud computing has the potential to deliver cost savings and increased flexibility and performance in networking and data management; and hyperdimensional, complex, big data are well suited for analysis by machine learning, which is a key element of today’s applications of AI. In addition to a large existing volume of historical oil and gas data, today’s increasingly complex upstream environments generate vast amounts of data for which the value is greatly enhanced with cutting-edge IT. “Some argue there is a substantial amount of oil to be found by applying new analysis techniques to data already on the shelf,” Smith said. It is important to distinguish between data management and AI. SPE’s Artificial Intelligence and Predictive Analytics (AIPA) group was previously a subsection of SPE’s Digital Energy Technical Section. Now it constitutes its own technical section, Petroleum Data Driven Analytics. Essentially, digital energy is the curating—gathering, storage, and generation—of data, whereas AIPA involves using the data to perform tasks without human intervention, said Shahab D. Mohaghegh, professor of petroleum and natural gas engineering at West Virginia University, and founder of oil-field consulting and software company Intelligent Solutions, Inc. (ISI). “There is a push in our industry toward smart fields,” Mohaghegh said. “There is a misconception in our industry today that equates automation with intelligence. Just because an operation is automated does not mean that it is smart. Without AI, you may have auto-mated fields, but you will not have smart fields. An automated field may provide the brain, but AI provides the mind. AI is the language of intelligence; it is what makes the hardware smart. To fully realize this, one must subscribe to a complete paradigm shift.” A good modern example of the data-driven model outside the industry is credit card fraud detection and prevention tools that monitor consumer purchasing habits. “At ISI, that’s how we build reservoir management tools today,” Mohaghegh said. “We are now using the pattern recognition power of this technology to predict, manage, and design hydraulic fracture details in shale, using the hard data rather than soft data.”

This survey offers a detailed literature review based on different types of AI algorithms, their application areas in the petroleum industry, publication year, and geographical regions of their development. For this purpose, we classify AI methods into four main categories including evolutionary algorithms, swarm intelligence, fuzzy logic, and artificial neural networks. Additionally, we examine these types of algorithms with respect to their applications in petroleum engineering. Abstract:Oil and gas construction projects are critical for meeting global demand for fossil fuels, but they also present unique risks and challenges that require innovative construction approaches. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a promising technology for tackling these challenges, and this study examines its applications for sustainable development in the oil and gas industry. Using a systematic literature review (SLR), this research evaluates research trends from 2011 to 2022. It provides a detailed analysis of how AI suits oil and gas construction. A total of 115 research articles were reviewed to identify original contributions, and the findings indicate a positive trend in AI research related to oil and gas construction projects, especially after 2016. The originality of this study lies in its comprehensive analysis of the latest research on AI applications in the oil and gas industry and its contribution to developing recommendations for improving the sustainability of oil and gas projects. This research's originality is in providing insight into the most promising AI applications and methodologies that can help drive sustainable development in the oil and gas industry.

Design/Methodology/Approach: This study focuses on challenges faced by different streams of oil and gas industries and its acceptance and dependency on AI to overcome them. Findings/Result: Now, oil and gas companies may use AI to estimate the value of specific reservoirs, customise drilling and completing plans to the specific geology, and assess the risks related to each well. Abstract:Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a system that simulates the thinking process. AI involves a simple structural approach to the development of complex decision-making systems, allowing the user to set and solve problems of varying degrees of complexity. Today, AI technologies are increasingly being used in many areas of human activity, and the oil and gas industry is no exception. Application of AI in oil and gas industry is rapidly developing and gradually being introduced in various areas such as: smart drilling, smart pipeline, smart refinery, etc. Based on AI, it is possible to create an ecosystem in which coordination and cooperation of all levels, sectors and areas can be implemented to extend the life cycle of the oil field, improve efficiency and quality of decision-making, reduce costs and increase economic benefits. The paper explores the trend of intelligent development within the oil and gas industry, focusing on the utilization of large-scale data collection, integration, and analysis techniques. It delves into the in-depth exploration of geological, geophysical, production, and other pertinent information to deliver more comprehensive and precise data support for the exploration and development processes. Continuous advancements in big data and artificial intelligence technologies further refine solutions, ensuring greater accuracy and efficiency in oil and gas exploration and development. Data-driven intelligent technologies play a pivotal role in the exploration and development of oil and gas resources, providing a robust foundation for the industry's intelligent advancement. While intelligent technology presents significant opportunities, it also presents a myriad of challenges. Thus, collaboration and knowledge-sharing will serve as the primary catalysts for field development, facilitating the exchange of technology and expertise to collectively tackle challenges in the future.
