Abstract:The organic–inorganic hybrid materials (OIHMs) with stimuli-responsive features show the important scientific attraction in a multifunctional material application field, such as optoelectronic memory and sensors. Especially, designing a functional material with both dielectric switching and second-harmonic generation (SHG) remains attractive. Herein, we report a new OIHM [C7H15NCl] SbCl4 as a phase matching nonlinear optical material and dielectric switch functional materials. It undergoes a reversible phase transition at 297 K and exhibit a harmonic generation (SHG) effect of about 0.53 times that of KH2PO4 (KDP). Meanwhile, it also possesses potential semiconducting properties. This work might provide a strategy for designing novel multifunctional materials in the field of crystals and dielectrics.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic hybrid materials, which exhibit structural diversity and rich physical properties, have shown great potential as basic device elements in the optoelectronic field. Herein, we report a new lead-free organic-inorganic hybrid compound, [C3H8N](2)SbBr5 (1, where C3H8N+ is the cyclopropylammonium cation), which demonstrates tunable dielectric responses near room temperature, derived from its two successive structural phase transitions at the vicinity of T-1 = 290 K and T-2 = 315 K, respectively. That is, its dielectric constants change from high-dielectric (above T-2), moderate-dielectric (between T-2 and T-1) and low-dielectric states (below T-1). Such dielectric behaviors coincide well with a series of reversible thermal peaks in the DSC curve. Further structural analyses reveal that the order-disorder of organic cationic moieties accounts for the phase transition at T-2, while the change of the molecular configuration provides the driving force to the phase transition at T-1. Such phase transition behaviours differ from those of the majority of previously reported dielectric phase transition materials. Moreover, theoretical calculation of the electronic band structure of 1 reveals the direct feature with a band-gap value of similar to 2.36 eV. This work affords broader design flexibility for the future exploration of electrically-ordered materials in the organic-inorganic hybrid family.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic hybrid materials with controllable physicochemical properties have played a great role in multifunctional sensors, photovoltaic cells, switching devices, etc. Among them, organic-inorganic hybrid dielectric materials have become a research hotspot in the current cross frontier research. In order to unveil the effect of halogen ions onphase transition, we synthesized three hybrids: (TMBPA)CdCl2Br (TMBPA-ClBr, 1), (TMBPA)2CdBr4 (TMBPA-Br, 2), (TMIPA)2CdI4 (TMIPA-I, 3), (TMBPA = 3-bromopropyltrimethylammonium, TMIPA=3-iodopropyltrimethylammonium). The phase transition temperature of three compounds increases with the size of halogen ions from Cl- to I-. Interestingly, three compounds exhibit consistent trends in dielectric and photoluminescence properties, and the corresponding photoluminescence lifetimes are calculated as 1.55 ns, 1.28 ns, and 0.98 ns to expresses consistency with halogen regulation. This is very similar to the success of the cationic substitution of formamidinium/ Cs/ methylammonium lead iodide. Therefore, this work provides guidance for understanding the composition-structure-property relationship of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites.

Abstract:The investigation into approaches for achieving reversible control of topological phase transitions has attracted substantial research interest. So far, several system-dependent physical control methods are developed, while a chemical strategy for efficient regulation of topological properties is still lack. Here, this study presents a chemical means to achieve reversible topological control in 2D organometallic lattices by introducing the lactam-lactim tautomerization modules in the organic linkers. The strategy is validated in the theoretically designed 2D hexagonal framework with planar tricoordinated Co as nodes and 2,2 '-bithiazole derivatives as organic linkers, which transforms from a ferrimagnetic half metal with a local gap featuring Chern number of +1 to a ferromagnetic Chern insulator possessing Chern number of -1 after lactam-lactim tautomerization. Simultaneously, a flip in the spin polarization of charge carriers between the two lattice tautomers is also observed. This work demonstrates a chemical means to reversibly control the topological phase transition in 2D organometallic lattices via tautomerization on organic linkers. Abstract:Chiral organic-inorganic metal halide semiconductors(OIMHSs) have recently attracted numerous interests due to their unique chirality, structural tunability, and extensive physical properties. However,most reported chiral OIMHSs contain toxic lead, which will be a potential obstacle to their further applications. Herein, we successfully synthesized a novel chiral lead-free tin(IV)-based OIMHS [(R)-3-hydroxyquinuclidinium] 2 SnCl 6 ([R-HQ] 2 SnCl 6 ). It exhibits a wide band gap(E g ) of about 4.11 e V. Moreover,[R-HQ] 2 SnCl 6 undergoes a phase transition around 330 K(T c ) and shows distinct dielectric switching characteristics with good repeatability. This work enriches the chiral lead-free OIMHS family and stimulates further exploration of chiral lead-free OIMHS switching materials

Abstract:Molecular dielectric switches constitute a type of intelligent materials that are highly coveted for their distinctive advantages of switchable dielectric responses, lightweight, and mechanical flexibility. Two-dimensional (2D) hybrid perovskites have demonstrated excellent promise for assembling dielectric switches, in which the dynamic motions of organic moieties afford driving force to trigger switchable dielectric phase transition. Here, we successfully assembled a new lead-free hybrid double perovskite, (CHA)4CuBiBr8 (1, CHA = cyclohexylammonium), adopting a typical 2D structural motif, which shows dielectric anisotropy and bistable behaviors during the reversible phase transition near T c = 378 K (the Curie temperature). That is, its dielectric constants could be switched and tuned between high-dielectric and low-dielectric states. Structure analyses reveal that the ordered-disordered transformation of the organic CHA+ moiety and distortion of inorganic framework account for its phase transition. This result will stimulate further exploration of molecular dielectric switches in this 2D environmentally friendly family.

Abstract:We report two organic–inorganic hybrid thermochromic crystals, [(2A5MP) 2 CuCl 4 ] (2A5MP = 2-amino-5-methylpyridine) (1) and [(2A4MP) 2 CuCl 4 ] (2A4MP = 2-amino-4-methylpyridine) (2). Through hydrogen bond engineering optimization, the ferroelastic material 2 undergoes an isomorphic phase transition with a large thermal hysteresis of 36 K at 397 K/361 K.

Abstract:Zero-dimensional (0D) metal halides have drawn increasing attention due to the attractive structure dependent photoluminescence (PL) properties. Here, we report two new 0D organic-inorganic hybrid Sb-based halides, (MTP)6 SbBr6 Sb2 Br9 ⋅H2 O (MTP=Methyltriphenylphosphonium, crystal 1) and (MTP)2 SbBr5 (crystal 2), featuring a reversible structural phase transformation and tunable orange and red emissions upon dehydration and rehydration of H2 O molecules. Intriguingly, a subsequent heat treatment further enables the formation of glassy state (MTP)2 SbBr5 (glass 3) with near-infrared luminescence, moreover, a sequential reverse phase transformation from glass 3 to crystal 2 and 1 is triggered by acetonitrile and water vapor stepwise. The anti-counterfeiting demo based on the tunable and reversible PL switching is finally achieved and thus the phase structure engineering in 0D metal halides expands their multiple applications in optical fields.

Abstract:The flexibility afforded by the modular structure confers fruitful unique properties to the organic-inorganic hybrid metal halides (OIMHs). Typically, stimuli-responsive materials have wide applications in thermal imaging, thermometer, and anti-counterfeiting. Herein, the Mn(II)-based OIMHs (TMS)2MnBr4 (TMS = trimethyl sulfonium) were prepared through a facile dry ball-milled method. The obtained ball-milled powders show an intriguing phase transition along with the emission switching. Importantly, the photoluminescence (PL) switching can be realized by simply laying hands on the (TMS)2MnBr4 powders, highlighting the promising application potentials in portable thermosensitive devices.

Abstract:A novel organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite crystal, [ClC6H4(CH2)2NH3]2CuBr4 (1), having experienced an invertible high-temperature phase transition near Tc (the Curie temperature Tc = 355 K), has been successfully synthesized. The phase-transition characteristics for compound 1 are thoroughly revealed by specific heat capacity (Cp), differential thermal analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry tests, possessing 16 K broad thermal hysteresis. Multiple-temperature powder X-ray diffraction analysis further proves the phase-transition behavior of compound 1. Moreover, compound 1 exhibits a significant steplike dielectric response near Tc, revealing that it can be deemed to be a promising dielectric switching material. The variable-temperature fluorescence experiments show distinct photoluminescence (PL) changes of compound 1. Further investigation and calculation disclose that the fluorescence lifetime of compound 1 can reach as long as 55.46 μs, indicating that it can be a potential PL material. All of these researches contribute a substitutable avenue in the design and construction of neoteric phase-transition compounds combining high Curie temperature and PL properties.

Abstract:Thermochromic perovskites, renowned for their tunable bandgap, high absorption coefficient, and reversible color changes, emerge as promising candidates for applications in smart windows. These advancements not only have the potential to enhance occupant comfort but also contribute significantly to reducing energy consumption in buildings. Here, we present a two‐dimensional lead‐free organic‐inorganic hybrid perovskite [Cyclobutylammonium]2CuCl4 which shows phase transitions from C2/c to P21/c to P21/c space group at 319.5 K and 348.8 K, respectively. Accompanying these transitions is a fascinating, reversible phase structure‐dependent thermochromic behavior, manifesting as a vibrant sequence from yellow to brown to slightly dark brown. Most importantly, the demonstrated ability to switch stably between high and low dielectric states indicates the enormous potential of this material as a dielectric switch. This non‐toxic thermoresponsive perovskite, characterized by its appropriate transition temperatures, reversible phase structure‐dependent thermochromism, and stable dielectric switching behavior, is expected to generate significant interest within the fields of thermoresponsive and dielectric switching materials. The integration of these features not only positions this perovskite as a noteworthy subject of scientific inquiry but also opens avenues for practical applications in diverse fields.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic hybrid lead halide perovskites have attracted great interest for their use in promising optoelectronic applications. However, reports of photoluminescent perovskite molecular ferroelastic semiconductors with sequential high-Tc phase transitions have been scarce. In this work, a one-dimensional lead bromide hybrid perovskite [N,N-dimethylethanolammonium]PbBr3 has been synthesized, undergoing high-Tc sequential phase transitions at around 351 and 444 K, higher than those of most previously discovered hybrid perovskite phase transition materials. The specific intermolecular hydrogen bond between cationic molecules provides the greatest contribution to its high Tc by increasing the barrier of molecular motion under the temperature stimuli. The prominent ferroelastic domain evolution is visually observed under orthogonally polarized light. In addition, [N,N-dimethylethanolammonium]PbBr3 exhibits semiconducting and orange light emission characteristics. This finding opens up an avenue for designing high-performance ferroelastic materials and provides great motivation for discovering new multifunctional materials for the next generation of smart devices.

Abstract:A novel organic‐inorganic hybrid perovskite phase‐transition materials (C8H10ClN)2SnCl6 (1), which undergoes a high‐temperature phase transition near 377 K, possessing evident thermal anomaly, band gap (Eg=3.76 eV) and broadband fluorescence characteristics. This article reports a novel lead‐free phase‐transition material (C8H10ClN)2SnCl6 (1), which undergoes a high‐temperature phase change at close to 377 K. The multi temperature powder X‐ray diffraction (PXRD) also confirmed the phase transition occurred in compound 1. Significantly, compound 1 produces light emission at 452 nm. Variable temperature fluorescence studies indicate that the spectral emission maximum of compound 1 remains substantially fixed at 452 nm with increasing temperatures, implying the presence of a certain degree of photoluminescence stability in compound 1. Furthermore, compound 1 is characterized by exceptional semiconductor attributes, possessing a band gap of 3.76 eV. This pioneering study presents an innovative option for optimizing the growth and practical implementation of Sn (IV)‐based organic‐inorganic hybrid perovskite phase‐transition materials, and offers a strategic avenue to create novel lead‐free, eco‐friendly materials.

Abstract:Cyclic organic ammoniums have been regarded as the suitable organic components for constructing the organic–inorganic hybrid phase transition materials because they have flexible cyclic structure. Here, an In-based organic–inorganic hybrid compound, [C3H8N]3InBr6 (1; C3H8N+ is cyclopropylammonium), has been successfully synthesized. It is noteworthy that 1 experiences an invertible phase transition at 298 K (Tc), as certified by DSC measurement. Moreover, single-crystal X-ray diffraction determines that 1 crystallized in the monoclinic space group C2/m at 330 K and in the monoclinic space group C2/c at 240 K. Further analyses indicate that the structural phase transition is ascribed to the disorder–order changes of the cyclopropylammonium cations. And an obvious step-like dielectric anomaly in the vicinity of the Tc is detected. This work will pave the way to the exploration and design of In-based organic–inorganic hybrid phase transition materials.
