Ground states of nonlinear Schrodinger systems with mixed couplings: the critical case

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the following k-coupled nonlinear Schrodinger systems in the critical case: {-Delta u(i) +lambda(i)u(i) = mu(i)u(i)(3) + Sigma(j=1,)j(not equal i)(k) beta(ij)u(i)u(j)(2) in Omega, u(i) >= 0 in Omega, u(i)(x) = 0 on partial derivative Omega, i = 1, 2, ..., k. Here, Omega subset of R-4 is a smooth bounded domain, -lambda(1)(Omega) < lambda(i) < 0, mu(i) > 0 and beta(ij) = beta(ji) not equal 0 for every i not equal j, where lambda(1)(Omega) is the first eigenvalue of -Delta with the Dirichlet boundary condition. Note that the nonlinearity and the coupling terms are both critical in dimension 4 (i.e. 2N/(N - 2) = 4 when N = 4). Wecall the couplings beta(ij) are attractive if beta(ij) > 0, while repulsive stands for beta(ij) < 0. Under the assumption that all the couplings beta(ij) are purely attractive and large enough, we first show that this critical system has a fully nontrivial ground state solution, that is, a solution <(u)over right arrow> = (u(1), ..., u(k)) has all components nontrivial, under conditions providing additional vertical bar lambda(i) - lambda(i)vertical bar << 1, vertical bar beta(ij) - beta(i)'(j)'vertical bar << 1, while ground state solution may be semitrivial ((u) over right arrow has null components) without the above additional conditions. Whenthe systems admit mixed couplings, i.e. there exist (i, j) and (i', j') such that beta(ij) > 0 and beta(i)'(j)' < 0, we establish the existence of least energy positive solutions. The purpose of this paper is to solve some remaining open questions on Tavares and You (Calc. Var. Partial Differential Equations 59:26, 2020).
