Abstract:Thanks to their carbon uptake potential, which produces a negative radiative forcing, forests are considered a major natural mitigation strategy for global warming. Because of their relatively low albedo, however, previous assessments have shown that the effectiveness of afforestation rapidly decreases with latitude. Here, we revisit the problem by taking land-atmosphere feedbacks into account and especially the impact of vegetation on the timing of cloud formation and the probability of convective precipitation. Using a soil-plant-atmosphere continuum model coupled to a mixed layer model of the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL), we explore variations in the local surface energy balance and diurnal evolution as a function of biomes and latitude. We show that the increased evapotranspiration from forests causes an anticipation in the crossing between the ABL and the lifting condensation level a phenomenon that can lead to earlier cloud formation. This provides an extra cooling effect, which counterbalances the positive forcing of land-surface albedo. As a result, the negative effects of albedo changes appear less limiting, making afforestation a more viable strategy in a wider range of latitudes.

Abstract:Half of Earth's land surface has been altered by human activities, creating various consequences on the climate and weather systems at local to global scales, which in turn affect a myriad of land surface processes and the adaptation behaviors. This study reviews the status and major knowledge gaps in the interactions of land and atmospheric changes and present 11 grand challenge areas for the scientific research and adaptation community in the coming decade. These land-cover and land-use change (LCLUC)-related areas include 1) impacts on weather and climate, 2) carbon and other biogeochemical cycles, 3) biospheric emissions, 4) the water cycle, 5) agriculture, 6) urbanization, 7) acclimation of biogeochemical processes to climate change, 8) plant migration, 9) land-use projections, 10) model and data uncertainties, and, finally, 11) adaptation strategies. Numerous studies have demonstrated the effects of LCLUC on local to global climate and weather systems, but these putative effects vary greatly in magnitude and even sign across space, time, and scale and thus remain highly uncertain. At the same time, many challenges exist toward improved understanding of the consequences of atmospheric and climate change on land process dynamics and services. Future effort must improve the understanding of the scale-dependent, multifaceted perturbations and feedbacks between land and climate changes in both reality and models. To this end, one critical cross-disciplinary need is to systematically quantify and better understand measurement and model uncertainties. Finally, LCLUC mitigation and adaptation assessments must be strengthened to identify implementation barriers, evaluate and prioritize opportunities, and examine how decisionmaking processes work in specific contexts.

Abstract:The Earth Critical Zone (ECZ) is a captivating realm encompassing interconnected processes between the atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere and geosphere that influence and support systems for life and shape the surface of our planet. A profound grasp of the ECZ is vital for comprehending the diverse aspects of its properties, such as soil health, nutrient cycling, hydrological cycling, and socioeconomics. In alignment with this vision, an open-access journal, “Earth Critical Zone”, has been inaugurated. This journal provides a valuable platform for scientists and researchers to disseminate their findings, share innovative ideas, and exchange new methodologies related to the intricate processes occurring within the ECZ. In this context, we present a comprehensive overview of the journal's conceptual framework, the current state-of-the-art and emerging areas of research and its focal areas of interest. We extend a warm invitation for the submission of impactful papers. Join us in exploring the dynamic landscapes of the ECZ, wherein the convergence of knowledge and inquiry shapes our understanding of this crucial space within which we live.

Abstract:This paper overviews the short‐term (biophysical) and long‐term (out to around 100 year timescales; biogeochemical and biogeographical) influences of the land surface on weather and climate. From our review of the literature, the evidence is convincing that terrestrial ecosystem dynamics on these timescales significantly influence atmospheric processes. In studies of past and possible future climate change, terrestrial ecosystem dynamics are as important as changes in atmospheric dynamics and composition, ocean circulation, ice sheet extent, and orbit perturbations.

Abstract:Abstract Interactions between air pollution and terrestrial ecosystems play an important role in the Earth system. However, process-based knowledge of air pollution–terrestrial ecosystem interactions is limited, hindering accurate quantification of how changes in tropospheric chemistry, biogeochemical cycling, and climate affect air quality and its impact on humans and ecosystems. Here we summarize current challenges and future directions for advancing the understanding of air pollution–ecosystem interactions by synthesizing discussions from a multidisciplinary group of scientists at a recent Integrated Land Ecosystem–Atmosphere Processes Study (iLEAPS) early-career workshop. Specifically, we discuss the important elements of air pollution–terrestrial ecosystem interactions, including vegetation and soil uptake and emissions of air pollutants and precursors, in-canopy chemistry, and the roles of human activities, fires, and meteorology. We highlight the need for a coordinated network of measurements of long-term chemical fluxes and related meteorological and ecological quantities with expanded geographic and ecosystem representation, data standardization and curation to reduce uncertainty and enhance observational syntheses, integrated multiscale observational and modeling capabilities, collaboration across scientific disciplines and geographic regions, and active involvement by stakeholders and policymakers. Such an enhanced network will continue to facilitate the process-level understanding and thus predictive ability of interactions between air pollution and terrestrial ecosystems and impacts on local-to-global climate and human health.

Abstract:Land-climate interactions are driven by causal relations that are difficult to ascertain given the complexity and high dimensionality of the systems. Many methods of statistical and mechanistic models exist to identify and quantify the causality in such highly-interacting systems. Recent advances in remote sensing development allowed people to investigate the land-climate interaction with spatially and temporally continuous data. In this study, we present a new approach to measure how climatic factors interact with each other under land cover change. The quantification method is based on the correlation analysis of the different order derivatives, with the canonical mathematical definitions developed from the theories of system dynamics and practices of the macroscopic observations. We examined the causal relationship between the interacting variables on both spatial and temporal dimensions based on macroscopic observations of land cover change and surface climatic factors through a comparative study in the different grassland ecosystems of China. The results suggested that the interaction of land-climate could be used to explain the temporal lag effect in the comparison of the three grassland ecosystems. Significant spatial correlations between the vegetation and the climatic factors confirmed feedback mechanisms described in the theories of eco-climatology, while the uncertain temporal synchronicity reflects the causality among the key indicators. This has been rarely addressed before. Our research show that spatial correlations and the temporal synchronicity among key indicators of the land surface and climatic factors can be explained by a novel method of causality quantification using derivative analysis.
Exploring ecosystem services interactions in the dryland: Socio-ecological drivers and thresholds for better ecosystem management

Abstract:The ecosystem services (ESs) interactions of dryland, play a significant role in maintaining ecosystem stability and supporting human well-being against the backdrop of a growing worldwide drought. Nevertheless, the quantitative evaluation of this topic has been limited. Therefore, we analyzed variations in seven ESs (livestock production, carbon sequestration, water yield, microclimate regulation, soil conservation, sandstorm prevention, and habitat quality) from 2000 to 2020 in the Hunshandak sandy land. Further utilizing machine learning, we discerned a variety of vital ESs interactions, alongside their fundamental drivers. The results showed that synergies are considered to be the most crucial relationships between ESs. Most trade-offs between ESs have weakened in space. Land use is the most important factor restricting the trade-off intensity of ESs. Grassland, forest, and unused land are the most sensitive to changes in relationship intensity. NDVI is critical for interpreting ESs thresholds that most ESs have a trade-off intensity threshold of less than 0.3. Average annual precipitation has inflection points of 250, 300, 350, and 450 mm, while the inflection points for temperature occurred at 2.8, 3, and 3.5 °C. Valuable guidance for dryland worldwide could be provided by timely and in-depth insights into the socio-ecological drivers that influence interactions among ESs.

Abstract:Climate over land—where humans live and the majority of food is produced—is changing rapidly, driving severe impacts through extreme heat, wildfires, drought and flooding. Our ability to monitor and model this changing climate is being transformed through new observational systems and increasingly complex Earth system models. But fundamental understanding of the processes governing land climate has not kept pace, weakening our ability to interpret and utilize data from these advanced tools. Here we argue that for land-climate science to accelerate forwards, an alternative approach is needed. We advocate a parallel scientific effort, one emphasizing robust theories, that aims to inspire current and future land-climate scientists to better comprehend the processes governing land climate, its variability and extremes and its sensitivity to global warming. Such an effort, we believe, is essential to better understand the risks people face, where they live, in an era of climate change.

Elucidating Observed Land Surface Feedbacks Across Sub-Saharan Africa

Abstract:This study examines the role of terrestrial forcings on the regional climate of sub-Saharan Africa through the application of a multivariate statistical method, stepwise generalized equilibrium feedback assessment, to an array of observational, reanalysis, and remote sensing data products. By applying multiple datasets, data uncertainty and the robustness of assessed land surface feedbacks are considered. The approach from our 2017 study is expanded to decompose the relative contribution of vegetation, soil moisture, and oceanic forcings; investigate the role of evapotranspiration (ET) partitioning in terrestrial feedbacks; and compare land surface feedbacks among four key regions, namely the Sahel, Greater Horn of Africa, West African monsoon region, and Congo. ET partitioning differs notably among sub-Saharan regions and between available observational datasets. Across sub-Saharan Africa as a whole, oceanic and terrestrial forcings impose a relatively comparable impact on year-round atmospheric conditions. The land surface feedbacks are most pronounced across the semi-arid Sahel and Greater Horn of Africa, although with unique seasonality of such feedbacks between regions. Moisture recycling is the dominant mechanism in these regions, with positive soil moisture–vegetation–rainfall feedbacks. The direct feedback of soil moisture anomalies on atmospheric conditions outweighed that of leaf area index anomalies. There is a clear need for more extensive observations of ET, its partitioning, and soil moisture across sub-Saharan Africa, as these data uncertainties propagate into the reliability of assessed soil moisture–ET feedbacks, particularly across the Sahel.

Abstract:Terrestrial processes influence the atmosphere by controlling land‐to‐atmosphere fluxes of energy, water, and carbon. Prior research has demonstrated that parameter uncertainty drives uncertainty in land surface fluxes. However, the influence of land process uncertainty on the climate system remains underexplored. Here, we quantify how assumptions about land processes impact climate using a perturbed parameter ensemble for 18 land parameters in the Community Earth System Model version 2 under preindustrial conditions. We find that an observationally‐informed range of land parameters generate biogeophysical feedbacks that significantly influence the mean climate state, largely by modifying evapotranspiration. Global mean land surface temperature ranges by 2.2°C across our ensemble (σ = 0.5°C) and precipitation changes were significant and spatially variable. Our analysis demonstrates that the impacts of land parameter uncertainty on surface fluxes propagate to the entire Earth system, and provides insights into where and how land process uncertainty influences climate.

Abstract:There are interactions between land surface and atmosphere.Not only land surface condition response to atmospheric/climate changes,but also land processes and land parameters such as DEM,vegetation fraction,land cover distribution,soil texture distribution,soil hydraulic and thermal parameters play an important role in atmospheric changes.Strong heterogeneity exists in the Northwest China.It is sensitive and frail for water resources variation and climate change.The inner-land watersheds are formed lined by water flow with multilayer nature landscape coexisting because of the topography roll there.Snow cover and permafrost exist in the mountainous regions in the upper reaches.Forests and oases lay in the middle reaches and Gobi/desert in the downstream.It provides the right place for mass and energy interaction study between land surface and atmosphere.There are several questions that need more studies.Water cycling,interaction between snow/freezing soil and atmosphere,precipitation downscaling,influence of land cover/use caused by human activity and nature change on atmosphere and scaling issue are discussed.It is pointed out that how to link the atmosphere model with coarse resolution and the middle/micro scale processes over land surface to establish the two-way coupling model is the main purpose in the future.Not only the impact of climate change on land water resources and ecosystem,but also the influence of land surface processes on atmosphere could be studied using the new established model.Therefore,the water cycle process and driving mechanism over the whole Heihe River Basin could be studied,which provide theoretical base for water resources management.
The long-term impact of transgressing planetary boundaries on biophysical atmosphere–land interactions

Abstract:Human activities have had a significant impact on Earth's systems and processes, leading to a transition of Earth's state from the relatively stable Holocene epoch to the Anthropocene. The planetary boundary framework characterizes major risks of destabilization, particularly in the core dimensions of climate and biosphere change. Land system change, including deforestation and urbanization, alters ecosystems and impacts the water and energy cycle between the land surface and atmosphere, while climate change can disrupt the balance of ecosystems and impact vegetation composition and soil carbon pools. These drivers also interact with each other, further exacerbating their impacts. Earth system models have been used recently to illustrate the risks and interacting effects of transgressing selected planetary boundaries, but a detailed analysis is still missing. Here, we study the impacts of long-term transgressions of the climate and land system change boundaries on the Earth system using an Earth system model with an incorporated detailed dynamic vegetation model. In our centennial-scale simulation analysis, we find that transgressing the land system change boundary results in increases in global temperatures and aridity. Furthermore, this transgression is associated with a substantial loss of vegetation carbon, exceeding 200 Pg C, in contrast to conditions considered safe. Concurrently, the influence of climate change becomes evident as temperatures surge by 2.7–3.1 °C depending on the region. Notably, carbon dynamics are most profoundly affected within the large carbon reservoirs of the boreal permafrost areas, where carbon emissions peak at 150 Pg C. While a restoration scenario to reduce human pressure to meet the planetary boundaries of climate change and land system change proves beneficial for carbon pools and global mean temperature, a transgression of these boundaries could lead to profoundly negative effects on the Earth system and the terrestrial biosphere. Our results suggest that respecting both boundaries is essential for safeguarding Holocene-like planetary conditions that characterize a resilient Earth system and are in accordance with the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement.

Abstract:Previously, the types of impacts of land–atmosphere interactions have scarcely been clarified systematically. In this article, we present a classification of these impacts based on modeling boundary layer variables/parameters, which is grouped into local, regional, and remote impacts. In the narrow sense, land surface processes (LSPs) influence the atmospheric state via vertical land–atmosphere coupling at local scales, which is referred to as local LSP impacts. However, local LSP impacts can lead to the advection effect due to the horizontal heterogeneity in the parameters over a region, which can be defined as regional LSP impacts. Furthermore, remote LSP impacts on the regional atmospheric state are induced by some land/sea surface variables/parameters over remote key areas of the Earth's surface, which are conventionally taken as strong signals of climate variation. Of the three impacts, local impacts are the most important essential, as the other two types of impacts are derived from these impacts. We describe the quantification of local impacts based on our previous studies from the perspective of modeling approaches, and we discuss some issues related to these impacts. Previous investigations showed that local LSP impacts are mostly stronger than regional LSP impacts, e.g., the diabatic process is dominant in the physical processes responsible for daily maximum temperatures, and two first-order physical processes including vertical diffusion largely induce changes in surface wind speed in China. Finally, some aspects for future research are noted. This study provides insights into the research on land–atmosphre interactions at different scales.

It provides policymakers with regular assessments of the scientific basis of human-induced climate change, its impacts and future risks, and options for adaptation and mitigation. This IPCC Special Report on Climate Change and Land (SRCCL) is the most comprehensive and up-to-date scientific assessment of the multiple interactions between climate change and land, assessing climate change, desertification, land degradation, sustainable land management, food security, and greenhouse gas fluxes in terrestrial ecosystems. It assesses the options for governance and decision-making across multiple scales. It serves policymakers, decision makers, stakeholders, and all interested parties with unbiased, up-to-date, policy-relevant information. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

Abstract:Climate change inevitably leads to changes in hydrothermal circulation. However, thermal-hydrologic exchanging caused by land cover change has also undergone ineligible changes. Therefore, studying the comprehensive effects of climate and land cover changes on land surface water and heat exchanges enables us to well understand the formation mechanism of regional climate and predict climate change with fewer uncertainties. This study investigated the land surface thermal-hydrologic exchange across southern China for the next 40 years using a land surface model (ecosystem-atmosphere simulation scheme (EASS)). Our findings are summarized as follows. (i) Spatiotemporal variation patterns of sensible heat flux ( H ) and evapotranspiration (ET) under the land cover scenarios (A2a or B2a) and climate change scenario (A1B) are unanimous. (ii) Both H and ET take on a single peak pattern, and the peak occurs in June or July. (iii) Based on the regional interannual variability analysis, H displays a downward trend (10%) and ET presents an increasing trend (15%). (iv) The annual average H and ET would, respectively, increase and decrease by about 10% when woodland converts to the cultivated land. Through this study, we recognize that land surface water and heat exchanges are affected greatly by the future climate change as well as land cover change.

Abstract:Responses of terrestrial ecosystems to climate change have been explored in many regions worldwide. While continued drying and warming may alter process rates and deteriorate the state and performance of ecosystems, it could also lead to more fundamental changes in the mechanisms governing ecosystem functioning. Here we argue that climate change will induce unprecedented shifts in these mechanisms in historically wetter climatic zones, towards mechanisms currently prevalent in dry regions, which we refer to as 'dryland mechanisms'. We discuss 12 dryland mechanisms affecting multiple processes of ecosystem functioning, including vegetation development, water flow, energy budget, carbon and nutrient cycling, plant production and organic matter decomposition. We then examine mostly rare examples of the operation of these mechanisms in non-dryland regions where they have been considered irrelevant at present. Current and future climate trends could force microclimatic conditions across thresholds and lead to the emergence of dryland mechanisms and their increasing control over ecosystem functioning in many biomes on Earth.

Abstract:Conserving and protecting the arid grassland ecosystem in Inner Mongolia under climate change requires large-scale observation and analysis. The interaction between land use/cover change (LUCC) and the regional climate change in this study area is addressed using macroscopic monitoring with remote sensing observation and analysis. The area's LUCC was examined to demonstrate the structural dynamics of the land surface in the past from 1988 to 2011. The results of LUCC showed that agricultural land, high coverage grassland, and low coverage grassland were the dominant land cover types taking approximately 65.3% in total. Developed land constantly increased from 1.4% to 12.7% during the study period due to rapid urbanization in the area. According to the land surface energy balance equations, the four key variables of the regional climate system, (1) normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), (2) albedo (a), (3) surface temperature (Ts), and (4) evapotranspiration (ET), were calculated for their spatial-temporal pattern dynamic and also to perform a correlation analysis to explore the structure-function relationship in the land-atmosphere interaction. The results illustrated that vegetation degradation caused an increase in albedo by approximately 5% on average by 2007 as attributed to the cumulative effects of the drought since 2003. ET also declined to around 0.8 cm/day in 2007. The correlation analysis results suggested the human land use such as development and agricultural activities made the surface boundary layer less responsive in the land-atmosphere interaction. Land-surface Controls on Afternoon Precipitation Diagnosed from Observational Data : Uncertainties and Confounding Factors

Abstract:The feedback between soil moisture and precipitation has long been a topic of interest due to its potential for improving weather and seasonal forecasts. The generally proposed mechanism assumes a control of soil moisture on precipitation via the partitioning of the surface turbulent heat fluxes, as assessed via the evaporative fraction (EF), i.e., the ratio of latent heat to the sum of latent and sensible heat, in particular under convective conditions. Our study investigates the poorly understood link between EF and precipitation by relating the before-noon EF to the frequency of afternoon precipitation over the contiguous US, through statistical analyses of multiple EF and precipitation data sets. We analyze remote-sensing data products (Global Land Evaporation: the Amsterdam Methodology (GLEAM) for EF, and radar precipitation from the NEXt generation weather RADar system (NEXRAD)), FLUXNET station data, and the North American Regional Reanalysis (NARR). Data sets agree on a region of positive relationship between EF and precipitation occurrence in the southwestern US. However, a region of strong positive relationship over the eastern US in NARR cannot be confirmed with observation-derived estimates (GLEAM, NEXRAD and FLUXNET). The GLEAM–NEXRAD data set combination indicates a region of positive EF–precipitation relationship in the central US. These disagreements emphasize large uncertainties in the EF data. Further analyses highlight that much of these EF–precipitation relationships could be explained by precipitation persistence alone, and it is unclear whether EF has an additional role in triggering afternoon precipitation. This also highlights the difficulties in isolating a land impact on precipitation. Regional analyses point to contrasting mechanisms over different regions. Over the eastern US, our analyses suggest that the EF–precipitation relationship in NARR is either atmospherically controlled (from precipitation persistence and potential evaporation) or driven by vegetation interception rather than soil moisture. Although this aligns well with the high forest cover and the wet regime of that region, the role of interception evaporation is likely overestimated because of low nighttime evaporation in NARR. Over the central and southwestern US, the EF–precipitation relationship is additionally linked to soil moisture variations, owing to the soil-moisture-limited climate regime.

Abstract:In the arid region, the oasis is characterized by a desert substance and a mosaic of vegetation. The biophysical processes and interactions between vegetation and the local climate in this kind of region are determined by the macroscopic structure of the ecosystems, i.e. landscape patterns. To understand how these landscape patterns impact regional hydro-heat coupling across space and evolve over time, we utilized remote sensing observational data and methods to examine the relationships among these factors. In this case, we focused on the oasis along the upstream of the Hotan River Basin in the Taklamakan Desert in Xinjiang of western China and employed the satellite imagery datasets of Landsat from 1993 to 2019 to investigate the dynamics of vegetation–climate factors. Based on the land use and cover change datasets, the landscape pattern metrics, including patch density ( PD ), contagion index ( CONTAG ), fractal dimension ( FRAC ), were calculated to measure the landscape features on the different aspects, i.e. the fragmentation, the connectivity, and the complexity. With the algorithm of land surface energy balance, the land surface indicators, including the soil-adjusted vegetation index ( SAV I), albedo, surface irradiance temperature ( T s ), and evapotranspiration ( ET ), were calculated to represent the key process in the interaction of vegetation–climate. The temporal-spatial dynamics of the landscape patterns and the vegetation–climate metrics were mapped and demonstrated in a quantitative manner. The statistical results revealed that during the past decades, the agricultural land in the study area had significantly increased by 17 %. Grassland and shrubs had also expanded, while the desert area decreased from 82.57 % to 78.82 % of the total area, with an overall reduction rate of 1.4 %/10a. It was found the study area was getting warmer and dryer based on the general trends of T s and ET observed during the period of 1993–2019. The agricultural land had the highest PD and CONTAG , and the lowest FRAC . The agricultural land had the lowest T s and the highest ET . The results of structural equation model identified the decoupling effects of PD and CONTAG on the regional hydro-heat environment, while confirmed that FRAC had positive impact on the coupling between T s and ET . Our study bridged the landscape pattern with the regional vegetation–climate interaction and provided the suggestions for the landscape planning and management for a more sustainable arid region.
