Abstract:Carbon nanothread (C-NTH) is a new ultrathin one-dimensional sp3 carbon nanostructure, which exhibits promising applications in novel carbon nanofibers and nanocomposites. Recently, researchers have successfully developed a new alternative structure - ultrathin carbon nitride nanothread (CN-NTH). In this work, we investigate the mechanical properties of CN-NTHs through large-scale molecular dynamics simulations. Comparing with their C-NTH counterparts, CN-NTHs are found to exhibit a higher tensile and bending stiffness. In particular, because of the bond redistribution, the CN-NTHs in the polymer I group and tube (3,0) group are found to possess a higher failure strain than their C-NTH counterparts. However, the CN-NTH in the polytwistane group has a smaller failure strain compared with the pristine C-NTH. According to the atomic configurations, the presence of nitrogen atoms always leads to stress/strain concentrations for the nanothreads under tensile deformation. This study provides a comprehensive understanding of the mechanical properties of CN-NTHs, which should shed light on their potential applications such as fibers or reinforcements for nanocomposites.

Abstract:One-dimensional monatomic chains are promising candidates for technical applications in the field of nanoelectronics due to their unique mechanical, electrical and optical properties. In particular, we investigate the mechanical properties including Young's modulus, ultimate strength and ultimate strain, which are necessities for the stability of the materials by the Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics in this work. The comparative studies for the alternating carbon-nitrogen (C3N2) chain and carbon chains (carbyne) of different lengths show that the carbon-nitrogen (C-N) chain is obviously stronger and stiffer than carbynes. Thus the C-N chain, which has been found in decomposition products of the nitromethane explosive simulations, could be a superior nano-mechanical material than the carbyne chain. Furthermore, it is found that the bond order of weakest bond in monatomic chains is positively correlated with Young's modulus and ultimate strength of materials.

Abstract:A high-pressure study of the CeN 5 compounds is performed by the crystal structure search method in combination with the first principle calculations. Four new phases C2 -CeN 5 , P -1-CeN 5 , P 2/ c -CeN 5 , and P 2 1 / m -CeN 5 were predicted at 0, 20, 50, and 100 GPa, respectively. The analysis of stability shows that C 2-CeN 5 , P -1-CeN 5 , and P 2 1 / m -CeN 5 can be quenched to ambient conditions. The stabilization mechanism of Ce nitrides is clarified by the analysis of electronic structures. The phase transformation of CeN 5 with the pressure is revealed by the enthalpy difference analysis. P 2/ c -CeN 5 and P 2 1 / m -CeN 5 with polymeric N-chains not only exhibit high energy densities (8.67 and 9.37 kJ/cm 3 ), but also outstanding detonation velocities (11.43 and 12.10 km/s) and detonation pressures (90.39 and 102.82 GPa).

Abstract:Inspired by the single-bonded nitrogen chains stabilized by tetravalent cerium, pentavalent tantalum, and hexavalent tungsten atoms, we explored the possibility of single-bonded nitrogen polymorphs stabilized by trivalent lanthanum ions. To achieve this, we utilized the crystal structure search method on the phase diagram of binary La–N compounds. We identified three novel thermodynamically stable phases, the C2/c LaN3, P-1 LaN4, and P-1 LaN8. Among them, the C2/c phase with infinite helical poly-N6 chains becomes thermodynamically stable above 50 GPa. Each nitrogen atom in the poly-N6 chain acquires one extra electron, and the spiral chain is purely single-bonded. The C2/c phase has an indirect band gap of ∼1.6 eV at 60 GPa. Notably, the band gap exhibits non-monotonic behavior, decreases first and then increases with increasing pressure. This abnormal behavior is attributed to the significant bonding of two La–N bonds at around 35 GPa. Phonon spectrum calculations and AIMD simulations have confirmed that the C2/c phase can be quenched to ambient conditions with slight distortion, and it exhibits excellent detonation properties. Additionally, we also discovered armchair-like nitrogen chains in LaN4 and the armchair and zigzag-like mixed nitrogen chains in LaN8. These results provide valuable insights into the electronic and bonding properties of nitrides under high pressure and may have important implications for the design and development of novel functional materials.

Abstract:Polymeric nitrogen materials are the crown of high energy density materials due to their environmental friendliness. Here, we proposed a general strategy to achieve crown-like polymeric nitrogen (cr-N) by combining high-pressure and chemical exfoliation methods. Using the first-principle structure search, we demonstrated that the cerium (Ce) atoms can effectively open the N≡N bond of N 2 at a moderate pressure of 25.7 GPa, and then the layered chelate with the crown-like N 18 ring is formed via the ligand effect of metallic Ce. Interestingly, when released to ambient conditions, can still maintain good stability due to robust N–N bonds; meanwhile, the interaction strength between the Ce atoms and N 18 ring decreases. As a result, Ce atoms can be selectively removed by alkaline anions, and the dynamic progresses are presented, which is similar to the synthesis of MXenes via the alkali intercalation exfoliation method, and then crown-like polymeric nitrogen cr-N is formed. The cr-N is proved to be dynamically, mechanically, and thermally stable at ambient conditions. Moreover, the excellent gravimetric energy density, detonation pressure, and detonation velocity of cr-N make it a significant high-energy density material. This work opens a new general avenue to realize polymeric nitrogen via high-pressure and chemical exfoliation methods.

Effect of the Bond Polarity on Interlayer Interactions in B–C–N Layered Materials: A Dispersion-Corrected Density Functional Study

Abstract:The interlayer interactions in nonpolar graphite and other BeCeN layered materials involving polar covalent bonds (h-BN, g-C3N4, graphite-like BC3 and BC2N) have been investigated by dispersion-corrected density functional calculations. Lattice parameters, bulk moduli and interlayer binding energies of these layered materials have been calculated using different dispersion correction schemes for comparison. Charge density difference plots have also been presented to elucidate the charge transfer behaviors along the nonpolar/polar covalent bonds as well as in the interlayer region. At first, graphite and h-BN were examined as benchmarks; the former contains planar graphene layers regardless of the interlayer binding, while the monolayers in the latter exhibit an asymmetric charge distribution along the BeN polar bonds, leading to a slightly puckered feature induced by the interlayer interaction. Similar geometric deviations have also been observed in other layered structures involving CeN and/or BeC polar bonds, but with distinct characteristics directly related to their specific interlayer stacking situations. By contrast, all of the isolated monolayers free from interlayer binding show a pristine planar feature in despite of the polar covalent bonds involved. Our theoretical findings further address the necessity of considering the electron-density variations induced by specific bonding environments in polar BeCeN layered materials, which can be properly described by the Tkatchenko-Scheffler correction.
Pentadiamond-like Metallic Hard Carbon Nitride

Abstract:The design and synthesis of superhard carbon nitrides have always been a focus of attention. Recently, an experiment has revealed the existence of the previously predicted three-dimensional strongly covalent carbon-rich Pnnm-CN structure with high incompressibility. This discovery promotes the study of new carbon-rich C-N compounds with various stoichiometric ratios. In this paper, we investigated the electronic and mechanical properties of carbon-rich C-N compounds with the structural analogues of a very recently proposed pentadiamond. The carbon-rich C10N and C19N3 were constructed by replacing the carbon atoms of the pentadiamond with nitride atoms at specific positions. The elastic and dynamic stabilities were confirmed by the calculations of the elastic constants and the phonon spectra. The C19N3 possessed a bulk modulus of 257.6 GPa, a shear modulus of 168.4 GPa, a Young's modulus of 414.8 GPa, and a hardness of 21.4 GPa, which were similar to the properties of the C10N. The analyses of the band structure and the density of states showed that the C10N and the C19N3 were both metallic, completely different from the semiconducting pentadiamond. The detailed electron orbital analysis showed that the C10N and C19N3 had different conductive behaviors due to the different positions of nitrogen atoms in the structures. In addition, our research expands the scope of C-N compounds and provides new ideas for the later theoretical design of carbon-rich C-N compounds.
All-Single Bonds Fused N18 Macro-Rings and N8 Cagelike Building Blocks Stabilized in Lanthanum Supernitrides

Abstract:Single-bonded polymeric nitrogen has gained tremendous research interest because of its unique physical properties and great potential applications. Despite much progress in theoretical predictions, it is still challenging to experimentally synthesize polynitrogen compounds with novel all-single-bonded units. Herein, we have synthesized two brand-new lanthanum supernitrides LaN8, through a direct reaction between La and N2 in laser-heated diamond anvil cells at megabar pressures. Our experiments and calculations revealed that two LaN8 phases had the R-3 and P4/n symmetry characterized by a unique 2D network with N18 macro-rings and cagelike N8 building blocks, respectively. Differing from known polynitrogen structures, these two polymers were composed of single-bonded nitrogen atoms belonging to sp3 and sp2 hybridizations. In particular, P4/n LaN8 possessed the longest N-N bond length among all of the experimentally reported metal nitrides, potentially being a high-energy-density material. The present study opens a fresh, promising avenue for the rational design and discovery of new supernitrides with unique nitrogen structures via the high-pressure treatment.
Beyond Graphitic Carbon Nitride: Nitrogen-Rich Penta-Cn2 Sheet

Abstract:Using first-principles calculations combined with ab initio molecular dynamics and tight binding model, we predict the existence of a kinetically stable two-dimensional (2D) penta-CN2 sheet, which is isostructural to the recently discovered pentagraphene. The concentration of N in this new carbon nitride sheet exceeds the maximum N content, namely 21.66%, that has been achieved experimentally in honeycomb geometry. It even exceeds the N content found recently in hole-doped carbon nitride C0.5N0.5, as well as in porous graphitic C3N4. The penta-CN2 sheet contains N-N single bonds with an energy density of 4.41 kJ/g, higher than that predicted recently in nitrogen rich B-N compound. Remarkably, penta-CN2 has an in-plane axial Young's modulus of 319 N/m, even stiffer than the h-BN monolayer. The electronic band structure of penta-CN2 exhibits an interesting double degeneracy at the first Brillouin zone edges which is protected by the nonsymmorphic symmetry and can be found in other isostructural chemical analogues. The band gap of penta-CN, calculated using HSEO6 functional is 6.53 eV, suggesting its insulating nature. The prediction of a stable penta-CN2 implies that puckering might be more effective than porosity in holding nitrogen in 2D carbon nitrides. This sheds new light on how to design nitrogen-rich C-N compounds beyond N-doped graphene.
Transition Metal/Lanthanide-Nitrogen Double Bonds Co-stabilized in a Carbon Cage

Abstract:Metal-nitrogen double bonds have been commonly reported for conventional metal complexes, but the coexistence of both transition metal-nitrogen and lanthanide-nitrogen double bonds bridged by nitrogen within one compound has never been reported. Herein, by encapsulating a ternary transition metal-lanthanide heteronuclear dimetallic nitride into a C-84 fullerene cage, transition metal-nitrogen and lanthanide-nitrogen double bonds are costabilized simultaneously within the as-formed clusterfullerene TiCeN@C-1(12)-C-84, which is a representative heteronuclear dimetallic nitride clusterfullerene. Its molecular structure was unambiguously determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, revealing a slightly bent mu(2)-bridged nitride cluster with short Ti-N (1.761 & Aring;) and Ce-N (2.109 & Aring;) bond lengths, which are comparable to the corresponding Ti-N and Ce-N double bonds of reported metal complexes and consistent with the theoretically predicted values, confirming their coexistence within TiCeN@C-1(12)-C-84. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations unveil three-center two-electron (3c-2e) bonds delocalized over the entire TiCeN cluster, which are responsible for costabilization of Ti-N and Ce-N double bonds. An electronic configuration of Ti4+Ce3+N3-@C-84(4-) is proposed featuring an intramolecular four-electron transfer, drastically different from the analogous actinide dimetallic nitride clusterfullerene (U-2)N-9+(3-)@C-80(6-) and trimetallic nitride clusterfullerene (Sc-2)6+Ti3+N3-@C-80(6-), indicating the peculiarity of 4-fold negatively charged fullerene cage in stabilizing the heteronuclear dimetallic nitride cluster.
High Energy Density Polymeric Nitrogen Nanotubes inside Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract:Polymeric nitrogen as a new class of high energy density materials has promising applications. We develop a new scheme of crystal structure searching in a confined space using external confining potentials fitted from first-principles calculations. As a showcase, this method is employed to systematically explore novel polymeric nitrogen structures confined in single-walled carbon nanotubes. Several quasi-one-dimensional single-bonded polymeric nitrogen structures are realized, two of them are composed of nanotubes instead of chains. These new polymeric nitrogen phases are mechanically stable at ambient pressure and temperature according to phonon calculations and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. It is revealed that the stabilization of zigzag and armchair chains confined in carbon nanotubes are mostly attributed to the charge transfer from carbon to nitrogen. However, for the novel nitrogen nanotube systems, electrons overlapping in the middle space provide strong Coulomb repulsive forces, which not only induce charge transfer from the middle to the sides but also stabilize the polymeric nitrogen. Our work provides a new strategy for designing novel high-energy-density polymeric nitrogen materials, as well as other new materials with the help of confined space inside porous systems, such as nanotubes, covalent organic frameworks, and zeolites.
Exotic stable cesium polynitrides at high pressure

Abstract:New polynitrides containing metastable forms of nitrogen are actively investigated as potential high-energy-density materials. Using a structure search method based on the CALYPSO methodology, we investigated the stable stoichiometries and structures of cesium polynitrides at high pressures. Along with the CsN3, we identified five new stoichiometric compounds (Cs3N, Cs2N, CsN, CsN2, and CsN5) with interesting structures that may be experimentally synthesizable at modest pressures (i.e., less than 50 GPa). Nitrogen species in the predicted structures have various structural forms ranging from single atom (N) to highly endothermic molecules (N2, N3, N4, N5, N6) and chains (N∞). Polymeric chains of nitrogen were found in the high-pressure C2/c phase of CsN2. This structure contains a substantially high content of single N-N bonds that exceeds the previously known nitrogen chains in pure forms, and also exhibit metastability at ambient conditions. We also identified a very interesting CsN crystal that contains novel N4(4-) anion. To our best knowledge, this is the first time a charged N4 species being reported. Results of the present study suggest that it is possible to obtain energetic polynitrogens in main-group nitrides under high pressure.
General Layer-By-Layer Approach to Composite Nanotubes and Their Enhanced Lithium-Storage and Gas-Sensing Properties

Abstract:A novel and versatile layer-by-layer approach has been developed to synthesize composite metal oxide nanotubes on carbon-nanotube (CNT) templates. We demonstrate this approach by the preparation of CeO2-SnO2 and Ag-NiO composite nanotubes. The electrostatic attraction between the CNTs and metal ions play the most Important role in the formation of CNT-based core-shell nanotubes, from which the composite metal oxide nanotubes are subsequently synthesized. It is found that the CeO2-SnO2 and Ag-NiO composite nanotubes lead to excellent device performance when they are used in gas sensors and Li-ion batteries, respectively.
The Effects of Morphology and Temperature on the Tensile Characteristics of Carbon Nitride Nanothreads.

Abstract:Very recently synthesized carbon nitride nanothreads (CNNTs) by compressing crystalline pyridine show outperform diamond nanothreads in chemical and physical properties. Here, using first-principles-based ReaxFF molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, a comprehensive investigation on the mechanical characteristics of seven experimentally synthesized CNNTs has been performed. All CNNTs exhibit unique tensile properties that change with molecular morphology, atomic arrangement and the distribution of nitrogen in the skeleton. The CNNTs with more effective covalent bonds at cross-sections are more mechanically robust. Surprisingly, a tiny CNNT with periodic unit structures of 5462-cage shows extreme ductility because of the formation of a linear polymer via 4-step dissociation-and-reformation of bonds at extremely low temperatures in the range of 1-15 K; however, it shows brittle failure at one cross-section with low ductility at higher temperatures similar to other CNNTs at different temperatures; this offers a feasible way to design a kind of lightweight material that can be used in ultra-low temperature conditions, for example, the harsh deep space environment. The results also show that temperature significantly affects the fracture stress and rupture strain but not the effective stiffness. The analysis of atomic bond orders and bond lengthening reveals that the unique nonlinear elasticity of CNNTs is attributed to the occurrence of local bond transformations. This study provides physical insights into the tensile characteristics of CNNTs for the design and application of CNNT-based nanostructures as multifunctional materials.
Three-dimensional Insight on the Evolution of a Supramolecular Preorganization Complex to Hollow-Structure Carbon Nitride

Abstract:The supramolecular preorganization approach can be applied to effectively fabricate various morphologies of graphitic carbon nitride(g-CN)with improved photocatalytic activity, while a comprehensive understanding for the morphology evolution from supramolecular aggregates to g-CNs is lacking. Herein, 3D characterizations from electron tomography provide a fundamental insight on the evolution from rod-like melamine-cyanuric acid(MC)complex to hollow-structure g-CN in the thermal polycondensation process. The internal region and a group of surfaces of the rod-like complex initially underwent polycondensation, while the other two groups of surfaces with ~100 nm thickness almost unchanged. With the temperature reached to 550 degree C, the hollow-structure g-CN eventually formed due to most of the internal matter vanishing, and voids arose in the previously unaffected surfaces(edges),resulting in a porous shell structure. Quantitative electron tomography indicates that the key of structure evolution is the differentiated condensation polymerization between edges and inner region of the rod-like MC complex, which is ascribed to a higher dense of surfaces and a lower dense of inner matter with loose, defective orignization.

Abstract:In view of the growing interest in endohedral lanthanide fullerenes, Ce, as a typical+ 4 oxidation state lanthanide element, has been systematically studied. The synthesis, extraction and electronic structure of Ce @ C2n are investigated. Soot containing Ce@C2n was synthesized in high yield by carbonizing CeO2-containing graphite rods and are back-burning the CeC2-enriched cathode deposit in a DC arc plasma apparatus. Ce@C2n dominated by Ce@C82, can be efficiently extracted from the insoluble part of the soot after toluene Soxhlet extraction by pyridine at high temperature and high pressure in a closed vessel. About 60% Ce@C2n(2n = 82, 80, 78, 76) and 35% Ce@C82 can be enriched in the pyridine extract. This fact is identified by desorption electron impact mass spectrometry (DEI MS). The electronic structure of Ce@C2n is analyzed by using X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) of pyridine-free film. It is suggested that the encapsulated Ce atom is in a charge state close to+ 3 and was effectively protected from reaction with water and oxygen by the enclosing fullerene cage. Unlike theoretical expectation, the electronic state of Ce@C82 is formally described as Ce+3@C3−82.

Abstract:The high-pressure phase diagram of Co–N compounds is enriched by proposing five stable phases (Pnnm-Co2N, Pmn21-Co2N, Pmna-CoN, Pnnm-CoN2, and P1̅-CoN4) and two metastable phases (P3̅1c-CoN8 and P1̅-CoN10). A systematic study has been performed for revealing the novel polymeric nitrogen structure and the outstanding properties of predicted polynitrides, such as structural characterization, energy analysis, stability analysis, and electronic analysis. P3̅1c-CoN8 with the novel layer-shaped N-structure and P1̅-CoN10 with the novel band-shaped N-structure are first reported in this work. Moreover, P3̅1c-CoN8 (6.14 kJ/g) and P1̅-CoN10 (5.18 kJ/g) with high energy density can be quenched down to ambient conditions. The proposed seven high-pressure phases are all metallic phases. A weak ionic bond interaction is observed between the Co and N atoms, while a strong N–N covalent bond interaction is observed in the Pnnm-CoN2, P1̅-CoN4, P3̅1c-CoN8, and P1̅-CoN10 phases. The N atoms in the polynitrides hybridize in the sp2 state, for which the hybrid orbitals are constructed by the σ bond or lone electronic pair. The charge transfer between the Co and N atoms plays an important role to the structural stability. Abstract:Carbon nitride powder with an atomic N/C ratio of 1 has been prepared by reaction of cyanuric chloride with sodium metal. X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectra, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopic data provide substantial evidence for a graphite-like sp 2 -bonded structure composed of building blocks of s-triazine rings bridged by carbon-carbon atoms in the bulk carbon nitride. The electron-microscopy results reveal that the material is spherical particles with an average diameter of 50 nm. The optical properties and thermal stability are also characterized. Based on the experimental results, it is deduced that the structure of as-prepared material carbon nitride has polyether structure.

Abstract:The recent successful synthesis of Pnnm-CN structure inspired researchers to explore new superhard 3D C–N compounds via a similar method, that is, high-pressure and high-temperature experiments involving carbon and nitrogen elements. Naturally, in some past high-pressure experiments involving C–N precursors, whether there are undiscovered C–N compounds in the product is worthy of being re-examined. This work proposed four novel carbon-rich C–N compounds, namely, r-C17N4, sc-C4N, sc-C17N4–I, and sc-C17N4-II, which possibly coexist with the unidentified simple cubic carbon phase in the shock compression products of the carbon black and tetracyanoethylene mixture. Most of the X-ray diffraction peaks from the experiment could be understood by the proposed C–N compounds. Furthermore, the calculations of formation enthalpies using experimental materials as precursors show that these four C–N compounds are more easily synthesized than the carbon structures previously used to explain the unknown phase. These phenomena indicate that C–N compounds might be synthesized in this experiment, not just the new carbon phase. The current study may provide a new idea for the experimental research of C–N compounds and inspire further research to reevaluate previous experimental findings.

Abstract:The polymerization of nitrogen can be used as high energy density materials. The crystal structures of Li 2 N 2 at high pressures are explored by using the first-principles method combined with evolutionary algorithm. The phase transitions Pmmm → Immm → Pnma → Cmcm-1 → I4 1 /acd are predicted in the pressure range of 0–300 GPa. Enthalpy calculations reveal that the tetragonal phase I4 1 /acd containing the spiral nitrogen chains is stable above 242 GPa, indicating that the polymerization of nitrogen is realized in Li 2 N 2 under pressure.
