Abstract:Flexible optical sensors have been an emerging paradigm for applications in robotics,healthcare,and human-machine interfaces due to their high sensitivity,fast response,and anti-electromagnetic interference.Recently,Marques reports a bioinspired multifunctional flexible optical sensor(BioMFOS),achieving a forces sensitivity of 13.28 μN,and a spatial res-olution of 0.02 mm.The BioMFOS has a small dimension(around 2 cm)and a light weight(0.8 g),making it suitable for wearable application and clothing integration.As proof-of-concept demonstrations,monitoring of finger position,trunk movements,and respiration rate are realized,implying their prominent applications in remote healthcare,intelligent ro-bots,assistance devices teleoperation,and human-machine interfaces.

Abstract:Flexible and stretchable optoelectronics have attracted attention in recent years due to their remarkable capabilities for use in wearable computers, personal monitors, and other systems. These devices are conformal to human skin or tissue due to mechanical compliance, which is extremely suitable for biomedical or clinical applications, such as bionic devices, monitors, or curing diseases. This paper presents an overview of the flexible and stretchable inorganic optoelectronics, including mechanical design, photonic analysis, fabrication processing, some examples of the devices, and their applications in biomedical engineering. First, the recent technological advances in flexible designs and fabrication strategies are summarized. Then, the flexible and stretchable devices with different functionalities are described, including light-emitting devices, photodetectors, and other optical devices. Finally, we show the applications of flexible and stretchable optoelectronics on biomedical engineering. Abstract:Flexible photonic devices, which arc bendable, foldable, and even stretchable, arc not limited to the rigid physical state constraints of traditional optoelectronic devices and thus unique tunable optoelectronic properties could be achieved, which greatly expands the development and practical implementation of traditional optoelectronic devices. Combining with new functional optical materials, novel device integration technologies, and the advantages of photonic devices over electronic devices in material sensing specificity, channel capacity, and resistance to electromagnetic interference, flexible photonic devices show great research and application value in emerging and interdisciplinary fields such as wearable sensing, high-speed optical interconnect, light field manipulation, and optogenetic applications in biology. However, challenges including the fabrication difficulties, mechanical flexibility limitation, and the degree of integration exist in current flexible photonic technologies. This paper briefly reviews the recent progress on flexible photonic materials and devices to address those challenges. And further development and application demonstration for the flexible photonics has also been summarized and discussed.

Abstract:Skin‐inspired wearable devices hold great potentials in the next generation of smart portable electronics owing to their intriguing applications in healthcare monitoring, soft robotics, artificial intelligence, and human–machine interfaces. Despite tremendous research efforts dedicated to judiciously tailoring wearable devices in terms of their thickness, portability, flexibility, bendability as well as stretchability, the emerging Internet of Things demand the skin‐interfaced flexible systems to be endowed with additional functionalities with the capability of mimicking skin‐like perception and beyond. This review covers and highlights the latest advances of burgeoning multifunctional wearable electronics, primarily including versatile multimodal sensor systems, self‐healing material‐based devices, and self‐powered flexible sensors. To render the penetration of human‐interactive devices into global markets and households, economical manufacturing techniques are crucial to achieve large‐scale flexible systems with high‐throughput capability. The booming innovations in this research field will push the scientific community forward and benefit human beings in the near future.

Abstract:The emergence and advancement of flexible electronics have great potential to lead development trends in many fields, such as “smart electronic skin” and wearable electronics. By acting as intermediates to detect a variety of external stimuli or physiological parameters, flexible sensors are regarded as a core component of flexible electronic systems and have been extensively studied. Unlike conventional rigid sensors requiring costly instruments and complicated fabrication processes, flexible sensors can be manufactured by simple procedures with excellent production efficiency, reliable output performance, and superior adaptability to the irregular surface of the surroundings where they are applied. Here, recent studies on flexible sensors for sensing humidity and strain/pressure are outlined, emphasizing their sensory materials, working mechanisms, structures, fabrication methods, and particular applications. Furthermore, a conclusion, including future perspectives and a short overview of the market share in this field, is given for further advancing this field of research.

Abstract:Conventional integrated photonic devices are fabricated on rigid semiconductor or dielectric substrates and are therefore inherently incompatible with soft biological tissues. Over the past few years, we have developed a suite of active and passive photonic devices and systems integrated on plastic substrates which can be bent, twisted, and stretched without compromising their optical performance. Here we review the latest progress in this emerging field, and discuss the rational material and mechanical engineering principles underlying the extraordinary flexibility of these photonic structures. Leveraging these design strategies, we demonstrated bendable glass waveguide circuits, flexible waveguide-integrated nanomembrane photodetectors, and stretchable photonics.

Abstract:Abstract This review provides an overview of the current state‐of‐the‐art of the emerging field of flexible multifunctional sensors for wearable and robotic applications. In these application sectors, there is a demand for high sensitivity, accuracy, reproducibility, mechanical flexibility, and low cost. The ability to empower robots and future electronic skin (e‐skin) with high resolution, high sensitivity, and rapid response sensing capabilities is of interest to a broad range of applications including wearable healthcare devices, biomedical prosthesis, and human–machine interacting robots such as service robots for the elderly and electronic skin to provide a range of diagnostic and monitoring capabilities. A range of sensory mechanisms is examined including piezoelectric, pyroelectric, piezoresistive, and there is particular emphasis on hybrid sensors that provide multifunctional sensing capability. As an alternative to the physical sensors described above, optical sensors have the potential to be used as a robot or e‐skin; this includes sensory color changes using photonic crystals, liquid crystals, and mechanochromic effects. Potential future areas of research are discussed and the challenge for these exciting materials is to enhance their integration into wearables and robotic applications.

Abstract:Flexible biosensors (pressure, optical, temperature, and electrochemical sensors) prepared from various biocompatible materials have the capability to monitor physiological signals such as heart rate, temperature, and body fluid markers. Sophisticated wearable/implantable sensors and systems for optimizing every aspect of the personal health and performance can be achieved through rational design of functional material and device architecture, as well as the use of advanced processing/integration approaches. Human beings have a greater need to pursue life and manage personal or family health in the context of the rapid growth of artificial intelligence, big data, the Internet of Things, and 5G/6G technologies. The application of micro biosensing devices is crucial in connecting technology and personalized medicine. Here, the progress and current status from biocompatible inorganic materials to organic materials and composites are reviewed and the material‐to‐device processing is described. Next, the operating principles of pressure, chemical, optical, and temperature sensors are dissected and the application of these flexible biosensors in wearable/implantable devices is discussed. Different biosensing systems acting in vivo and in vitro, including signal communication and energy supply are then illustrated. The potential of in‐sensor computing for applications in sensing systems is also discussed. Finally, some essential needs for commercial translation are highlighted and future opportunities for flexible biosensors are considered.

Abstract:Abstract The flexible physical sensors have the advantage of good flexibility and ductility and can be freely bent or even folded. The development of flexibility from rigidity has significantly increased the application situations for sensors, especially in intelligent robots, tactile platforms, wearable medical sensors, bionic devices, and other fields. The research of membrane-based flexible physical sensors relies on the development of advanced materials and technologies, which have been derived from a wide range of applications. Various technical methods and principles have gradually matured according to the different applications and materials used. This review begins with a discussion of membrane substrates and functional materials, summarizing the development of flexible physical sensors. According to the technical sensing principles, this review focuses on research progress on physical sensing platforms. Finally, the challenges and opportunities for the design of emerging membrane-based flexible physical sensors in the coming years are presented.

Abstract:Wearable electronics have received extensive attention in human–machine interactions, robotics, and health monitoring. The use of multifunctional sensors that are capable of measuring a variety of mechanical or environmental stimuli can provide new functionalities for wearable electronics. Advancements in material science and system integration technologies have contributed to the development of high-performance flexible multifunctional sensors. This review presents the main approaches, based on functional materials and device structures, to improve sensing parameters, including linearity, detection range, and sensitivity to various stimuli. The details of electrical, biocompatible, and mechanical properties of self-powered sensors and wearable wireless systems are systematically elaborated. Finally, the current challenges and future developmental directions are discussed to offer a guide to fabricate advanced multifunctional sensors.

Abstract:The new flexible sensing technology integrates electronic information, material chemistry, biomedical engineering and nano-processing, to provide intelligent sensing terminals for the internet of things, which will be widely used in health monitoring, smart home, smart manufacturing and other fields.For the development of new materials and research on novel mechanisms, flexible sensors have gained much progress in basic parameters, such as sensitivity, response range, response time, linearity, hysteresis, and stability.The flexible sensing technology is not only limited to materials and devices, but also expands from a single device to system-level integrations.Aimed at the hot research issues in recent years, the development of new flexible sensors was introduced from four aspects: multimode integrated sensors, bionic electronic sensors, wireless signal transmission and energy supply, and intelligent information processing.

Abstract:Flexible electronic sensors have widespread applications in both traditional and emerging fields, particularly for human-computer interaction (electronic skins, wearable electronic devices) and physical and environmental monitoring for people. Flexible electronic sensors can be bent and folded readily without interfering with their detecting performance. However, researchers still face many difficulties. For instance, traditional flexible materials (such as organic materials) are less sensitive to external signals, and the production progress of flexible sensors is complicated. This review recapitulates applications of nanomaterials in flexible electronic sensors. Firstly, the working principles and applications of three common types of flexible electronic sensors, the piezoresistive sensor, the capacitive sensor, and the piezoelectric sensor, are introduced. Then, the paper summarizes methods for improving sensors performance in health monitoring, disease diagnosis and biological detection by application of different nanomaterials to flexible substrates. Finally, the future development of flexible nanomaterial sensors prospects. It is found that nanocomposites of metal nanomaterials, carbon nanomaterials and other polymers with unique tuned photoelectrical properties show enhanced performance as flexible sensors and further research is needed to improve the material-substrate integration to promote the large-scale application as wearable sensors.

Abstract:Biological signals generated during various biological processes are critically important for providing insight into the human physiological status. Recently, there have been many great efforts in developing flexible and stretchable sensing systems to provide biological signal monitoring platforms with intimate integration with biological surfaces. Here, this review summarizes the recent advances in flexible and stretchable sensing systems from the perspective of electronic system integration. A comprehensive general sensing system architecture is described, which consists of sensors, sensor interface circuits, memories, and digital processing units. The subsequent content focuses on the integration requirements and highlights some advanced progress for each component. Next, representative examples of flexible and stretchable sensing systems for electrophysiological, physical, and chemical information monitoring are introduced. This review concludes with an outlook on the remaining challenges and opportunities for future fully flexible or stretchable sensing systems.

Abstract:<p>Flexible electronic devices are widely used in daily life. Among them, flexible sensors are widely studied by their potential for extensive applications. Materials are one of the essential foundations for making electronic devices. Due to the excellent unique properties of organic and inorganic hybrid materials, they are widely used in the manufacture of flexible sensors. Flexible sensor technology is developed by combining organic and inorganic materials and these hybrid materials can ensure the high frequency and high‐speed conductive property of a device while making the device flexible. In this review, the main three elements of sensors are mentioned and the materials selections in different elements are reviewed. After investigating the materials' performance requirements of sensors, the performance of hybrid materials in sensors is comprehensively summarized according to the type of the sensor. Finally, some challenges and future directions of development are summarized and presented for flexible sensors based on such promising materials.</p>

Abstract:<p>Wearable electronics have revolutionized the way physiological parameters are sensed, detected, and monitored. In recent years, advances in flexible and stretchable hybrid electronics have created emergent properties that enhance the compliance of devices to our skin. With their unobtrusive attributes, skin conformable sensors enable applications toward real‐time disease diagnosis and continuous healthcare monitoring. Herein, critical perspectives of flexible hybrid electronics toward the future of digital health monitoring are provided, emphasizing its role in physiological sensing. In particular, the strategies within the sensor composition to render flexibility and stretchability while maintaining excellent sensing performance are considered. Next, novel approaches to the functionalization of the sensor for physical or biochemical stimuli are extensively covered. Subsequently, wearable sensors measuring physical parameters such as strain, pressure, temperature, as well as biological changes in metabolites and electrolytes are reported. Finally, their implications toward early disease detection and monitoring are discussed, concluding with a future perspective into the challenges and opportunities in emerging wearable sensor designs for the next few years.</p>

Abstract:The rapid development of flexible electronics, human–computer interaction, wireless technology, the Internet of Things, and internet health is promoting fast-past innovation in the field of wearable medical devices. Wearable devices are a category of personalized devices that include specialized sensors, which can make conformal contact with the human body or tissue to collect biochemical or electrophysiological signals. Hence, the development of high-precision flexible devices is attracting increasing interest as they can provide real-time medical data for monitoring the physiological state of patients and their diagnosis and treatment, as well as help individuals to pursue a healthier lifestyle. This Perspective reviews the developments and requirements of wearable flexible electronic devices in medical monitoring and then discusses the possible applications and challenges of using flexible sensor technology for point-of-care devices. Finally, an up-to-date discussion of the flexible sensor, its future prospects, and solutions it could provide in medical and diagnostic equipment are summarized.

Abstract:With recent progress in the design of materials and mechanics, opportunities have arisen to improve optoelectronic devices, circuits, and systems in curved, flexible, stretchable, and biocompatible formats, thereby enabling integration of customized optoelectronic devices and biological systems. Here, the core material technologies of biointegrated optoelectronic platforms are discussed. An overview of the design and fabrication methods to form semiconductor materials and devices in flexible and stretchable formats is presented, strategies incorporating various heterogeneous substrates, interfaces, and encapsulants are discussed, and their applications in biomimetic, wearable, and implantable systems are highlighted.
