Abstract:A 500 GHz TE 85 mode continuously frequency-tunable gyrotron has been designed, fabricated and investigated experimentally. In the experiment, the gyrotron operates at the second cyclotron harmonic stably. The operating frequency is tuned by means of adjusting the operating magnetic field or the beam energy. The variation of the output power is also investigated. It is found that when the operating magnetic field is changed, the frequency-tuning range is much bigger than that when the beam energy is changed.

Abstract:A 263 GHz frequency-tunable gyrotron has been designed and experimental studied. The gyrotron resonator is traditional three-section cavity. The operating frequency and the output power with respect to the operating voltage, operating magnetic field and the beam current are investigated experimentally. It is found that the operating frequency changes from 263.39 GHz to 264.84 GHz and the frequency-tuning range is about 1.45 GHz, the variation of the output power is from 26 W to 463 W when the operating voltage is fixed at 20 kV and the beam current is fixed at 0.8 A but the operating magnetic field changes from 9.59 T to 9.82 T. When the operating voltage increases from 14.4 kV to 22.2 kV at a fixed operating magnetic field of 9.65 T, the operating frequency decreases from 263.68 GHz to 263.40 GHz and the and the frequency-tuning range is 0.28 GHz. Meanwhile, the output power is changed from 52 W to 424 W. When the beam current increases from 120 mA to 880 mA but the operating magnetic field is fixed at 9.65 T and the operating voltage is fixed at 20 kV, the output power increases from 21 W to 277 W and the operating frequency increases from 263.396 GHz to 263.425 GHz, the frequency-tunable range is 0.029 GHz.

Abstract:A frequency-tunable gyrotron with multiband radiation has been designed, manufactured, and investigated experimentally. The frequency tuning scheme utilizing transverse modes switching and axial mode transition is employed to obtain multiband radiation. Three modes TE02, TE43, and TE24 are excited successively with the increase of the magnetic field. The main operating frequency of these modes are 140, 250, and 263 GHz, respectively. Experimental results indicate that a certain frequency-tuning range can be obtained at each frequency band by means of exciting a series of high-order axial modes.

Abstract:Continuously frequency-tunable terahertz (THz) gyrotrons are attractive for modern applications. Nevertheless, it is challenging to generate a broadband, continuously frequency-tunable range for a single-mode operation gyrotron. In this article, a frequency-tuning scheme based on multimode switching and axial mode transition is employed to effectively enhance the frequency-tunable capacity of a THz gyrotron. A 0.5-THz broadband, continuously frequency-tunable gyrotron with four operating modes TE5,7,q, TE10,5,q, TE3,8,q, and TE1,9, q (q = 1, 2, 3...) working successively has been theoretically investigated in detail and the principle of the operating mechanism is proposed in this article. By means of changing the operating magnetic field and the beam energy, the four operating modes are excited successively. Numerically calculated results show that a 10-GHz level continuous frequency tuning range is obtainable. The frequency can be tuned from 500.3 to 510.8 GHz successively. Meanwhile, the output power always remains at hundreds of watts level, which is typically favorable for modern applications. Besides, the corresponding magnetron injection gun (MIG) is optimized to meet the requirements of the broadband frequency-tunable gyrotron. The electron beam quality versus the operating voltage or the operating magnetic field has also been studied. The principle could benefit the development of broadband, frequencytunable THz gyrotrons.

Abstract:In this article, the experimental investigations on a 263-GHz gyrotron are presented. With the change of the operating magnetic field and the beam energy, the operating frequency is adjusted and the output power is also varied. It is found that when the operating magnetic field changes from 9.59 to 9.82 T at a fixed operating voltage of 20 kV and a beam current of 0.8 A, the operating frequency increases from 263.39 to 264.84 GHz, the frequency-tuning range is about 1.45 GHz, and the output power is from 26 to 463 W. Abstract:Gyrotron performance is sensitive to cavity structure parameters, and the cavity shape is temperature dependent due to thermal deformation induced by temperature rise from ohmic loss power on finite-conductivity cavity wall. Accordingly, this paper studies a frequency-tuning scheme for terahertz gyrotron by properly controlling the cavity thermal deformation. By combining gyrotron nonlinear theory and finite-element method software, controllable thermal-frequency-tuning capability of a continuous-wave 263-GHz gyrotron is systematically investigated, toward maintaining gyrotron operating under gyromonotron condition in frequency-tuning band, and achieving high efficiency in broadband frequency-tuning range. After studying cavity thermal distribution, structure deformation, and electron beam-wave interaction, an optimized cavity structure with transition sections on both ends is proposed. Simulation predicts that with the two-transition-section cavity, via additional thermal tuning, the continuous-frequency-tuning band is capable of reaching 1.75 GHz, which is 5 times of the initial bandwidth. Furthermore, using the thermal-frequency- tuning technology, impressive high efficiency above 17% is obtainable in the whole frequency-tuning range.

Abstract:As one of the high-power radiating sources in terahertz region, the output power of gyrotrons is up to several tens of kilowatts. The traditional terahertz gyrotrons are difficult to meet the needs of nuclear magnetic resonance using the dynamic nuclear polarization technique, for working in a fixed frequency. In this paper the continuous frequency tunable 0.42 THz coaxial gyrotron with 2 GHz bandwidth by mechanical tuning has been studied. The results show that the output power can keep over 8 kW level in the tuning bandwidth with unchanged operating magnetic field.

Abstract:To generate high-power continuous-frequency tunable sub-terahertz radiation, a quasi-optical confocal waveguide is attempted as the interaction structure of a gyrotron. In experiments, a gyrotron operated in quasi-optical TE <sub xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">06</sub> mode generated a maximum output power of 20 kW when driven by a 50-kV, 3.4-A gyrating electron beam, and achieved a continuous-frequency tuning band of 205.66–208.97 GHz by adjusting the operating magnetic field. The design, experimental and particle-in-cell simulation results of this gyrotron are presented.

Abstract:In this paper, a low-voltage high-efficiency 330 GHz tunable gyrotron is investigated, which operates on the open-cavity TE6,2 mode and employs an electron beam with voltage of 20 kV, current of 0.5A, and pitch factor of 1.5. Simulation achieves a competitive efficiency, more than 40%, under the assumption of using copper circuit wall and electron beam of 5% velocity spread. Besides, the investigation of the start-oscillation currents of the TE6,2 and TE1,4 modes indicates that the system is with reasonable broadband tunability.

Abstract:The gyrotron has already demonstrated the capability of generating high-power coherent electromagnetic (EM) radiation at high frequencies and finds application in fusion plasma heating and magnetic resonance spectroscopy. In this article, we propose a band gyrotron, which uses a so-called multimode switching scheme to realize ultrabroadband frequency tuning capability, nearly covering about of the band (75-110 GHz) range. The tuning strategy used to suppress mode competition and stabilize gun parameters in such an open-cavity multimode switching gyrotron is presented. Theoretical study shows that the multimode switching gyrotron can generate a frequency tuning range much wider than a conventional step-tuning gyrotron or a single-mode tuning gyrotron. In addition, another technology that uses a slot-assisted circuit to select only axis-symmetrical TE operating modes is presented. Using such a circuit, a tuning range of about 25 GHz in the band is obtainable. The proposed multimode switching gyrotron is a promising ultrabroadband source for millimeter-wave and terahertz-wave applications.

Abstract:in this paper, we present an investigation and design on a frequency tunable megawatt-class gyrotron at 0.24 THz. The gyrotron can operate at frequencies from 234 GHz to 246 GHz in steps of 2.9 GHz, with operating modes TE38.17, TE39.17, TE40.17, TE41.17, and TE42.17, respectively. In the analyses, the startup scenarios for operating modes were investigated by an in-house, developed, multi-mode, time-dependent code. The simulations result show that the output powers of 990 kW, 987 kW, 1060 kW, 1070 kW, and 1070 kW with corresponding interaction efficiencies of 36.5%, 36.8%, 39.3%, 39.5%, and 39.5% are achieved for operating modes TE38.17, TE39.17, TE40.17, TE41.17, and TE42.17, respectively.

Abstract:A 0.22-THz frequency-tunable gyrotron with transverse sliced cavity has been developed and tested in TRC-UESTC. The proof-of-principle experimental results indicate that radiation frequency can be varied over a 1.39 GHz range from 222.903 GHz to 224.288 GHz by adjusting the operating magnetic field. During the frequency tuning, the maximum output power was 2.85 kW with an efficiency of 5.5%. Compared with previous results of a normal cavity without transverse slices, it is demonstrated that transverse slices can suppress the mode competition and broaden the frequency tuning range. This mechanism is beneficial to the future development of high-power terahertz gyrotron.

Abstract:A 220 GHz gyrotron with an 8 T pulse magnet has been designed, constructed and operated in Terahertz Research Center, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China. TE(03) mode is selected as the operation mode, which is less susceptible to the mode competition. Experimental results show the output power is achieved 11.5 kW with efficiencies of 12.8%, and the frequency is between 219.6 GHz and 234.2 GHz.

Abstract:A 330 GHz pulse gyrotron has been developed in theory and experiment. The compact magnet and pre-bunched cavity interaction circuit bring about the advantages of system miniaturization and broadband tuning capability. Here the start-oscillation dominance of operating TE 6,2+ mode and the dynamic beam-wave interaction process are analyzed based on the measured magnetic field profile. We are currently carrying out the proof-of-principle experiment.

Abstract:Dynamics of the axial mode transition process in a 0.33-THz second-harmonic gyrotron is investigated to reveal the physical mechanism of realizing broadband frequency tuning in an open cavity circuit. A new interaction mechanism about propagating waves, featured by wave competition and wave cooperation, is presented and provides a new insight into the beam-wave interaction. The two different features revealed in the two different operation regions of low-order axial modes (LOAMs) and high-order axial modes (HOAMs) respectively determine the characteristic of the overall performance of the device essentially. The device performance is obtained by the simulation based on the time-domain nonlinear theory and shows that using a 12-kV/150-mA electron beam and TE-3,4 mode, the second harmonic gyrotron can generate terahertz radiations with frequency-tuning ranges of about 0.85 GHz and 0.60 GHz via magnetic field and beam voltage tuning, respectively. Additionally, some non-stationary phenomena in the mode startup process are also analyzed. The investigation in this paper presents guidance for future developing high-performance frequency-tunable gyrotrons toward terahertz applications.

Abstract:Experimental results of a high power frequency-tunable sub-THz gyrotron is presented in this paper. A series of high-order axial modes in a long gyrotron cavity are excited successfully by an electron beam of high voltage and high current. Initial experimental results show that a frequency tuning range of 0.79 GHz from 218.27 GHz to 219.06 GHz is obtained by only tuning the operating magnetic field. And during the frequency tuning, the output power is no less than 0.5 kW, while the maximum output power is 3.80 kW. The axial mode transition in high power gyrotron is experimental demonstrated. This results should be conductive to the future development of frequency-tunable gyrotron for some up-and-coming THz applications.

Abstract:The design of a 220 GHz continuous frequency-tunable gyrotron with a three-section tapered quasi-optical cavity is presented. The HE06 mode in quasi-optical cavity is selected as the operating mode. The tuning is achieved by changing the distance between the two mirrors, which ensures continuous variations in eigenfrequncies of the cavity. The PIC simulation results demonstrate the possibility of tuning the oscillation frequency by 8 GHz near 220 GHz (within a frequency band of about 3.6%) with an output power no less than 5 kilowatts.

Abstract:The continuous frequency tuning of a second-harmonic (SH) 800-GHz gyrotron is experimentally studied. The influence of the electron pitch factor on harmonic mode competition and frequency tunability has been thoroughly examined. By controlling the pitch factor, the competition from the fundamental parasitic mode can be effectively suppressed. The stable oscillations of the SH mode were achieved with an output power of up to 150 W and a continuous frequency tuning range of 0.8 GHz around 800 GHz. Similarly, the gyrotron operating in the fundamental mode can achieve wideband continuous frequency tuning range of 8.71 GHz around 385 GHz.

Abstract:Frequency-tunable gyrotron is a promising terahertz (THz) radiation source for many modern applications. Actually, a resonator-based gyrotron oscillator can play dual functions: gyromonotron and reflected-type gyro-backward-wave oscillator (BWO) corresponding to the forward-wave and backward-wave operation. The performances of the gyromonotron and the reflected-type gyro-BWO for a 0.5-THz frequency-tunable gyrotron have been theoretically investigated in detail. The calculated results indicate that the frequency tunability, the field profile of the axial mode, and the beam-wave interaction efficiency of the gyromonotron and the reflected-type gyro-BWO are dramatically different from each other. The gyromonotron state can switch to the reflected-type gyro-BWO state by means of increasing the operating magnetic field. In addition, we have systematically investigated the characteristics of the 0.5-THz frequency-tunable gyrotron with different beam-wave interaction structures, especially for the reflected-type gyro-BWO. It is found that the tapered angle of the output section has a significant effect on the frequency tunability of the reflected-type gyro-BWO, and the multisection cavity can improve the performance of the reflected-type gyro-BWO. The results of this study may be beneficial for getting a deeper insight into the physics of the forward-wave and backward-wave operation of a frequency-tunable gyrotron.
