Abstract:Fractures with various scale and geometry are important geologic structures which play a crucial role for petroleum industry, engineering geology, and geothermal exploration and exploitation because of their high fluid permeability. In this paper, at first the borehole radar response to a thin fracture is analyzed based on the plane wave analytical method. It is found that the primary reflection and multiple reflections cancel each other in both water- and air-filled fractures because of their opposite phases, resulting in that the superimposed reflected signals are weaker than the primary ones. Furthermore, the numerical method of sub-cell FDTD technique is used to simulate the borehole radar response to fractures with width ranging from 0.0005m to 0.02m, and filled with water or air, respectively. Compared with air-filled fractures, water-filled fractures are easier to detect when the fractures are parallel to the borehole. Wider fractures can give stronger reflections and are easier to identify.
