Abstract:Battery thermal management system is one of the most essential parts for the battery pack in electric vehicles. In this paper, a new battery thermal management system is developed through the combination of the battery pack structure optimization and the cooling strategy design. First, a new battery pack equipped with the hollow spoiler prisms based on the aligned battery pack is designed to improve the cooling performance. The best intervals design between cells and the optimal sizes of spoiler prisms are given. Second, the reciprocating air flow is applied to improve the temperature uniformity of the cells, and an indicator is put forward to determine the suitable reciprocation period of air flow. Third, the intelligent cooling method based on fuzzy model predictive control is adopted to adjust the cooling intensity according to heat dissipation needs and energy consumption. Finally, the ANSYS simulation results show that the proposed battery thermal management system can save 76.4% of energy compared to the conventional cooling system, while maintaining the average temperature of cells around the optimal operating temperature. And the temperature non-uniformity is reduced from 1.5 degrees C to around 0.6 degrees C.

Abstract:As a key component in contact with the battery pack in the liquid-cooled system of electrical vehicle, cooling plate needs to achieve effective heat transfer while maintaining the temperature distribution uniformity of the battery pack. In this paper, numerical analysis of the cooling plate structure adopted in an actual battery module is undertaken and verified by comparison with the experiment. Three structural design schemes for the cooling plate are proposed and analyzed based on the thermal characteristics of the battery pack. The results indicate that the temperature distribution of the battery pack is actually the result of the two-way coupling of the battery heating and liquid cooling process. The temperature distribution uniformity of the battery pack can be effectively improved after the structural optimization of the cooling plate. Compared to the original design, the maximum field synergy angle is reduced by 7.25%, while the cooling efficiency factor is increased by 10.82% for the uneven heating condition of the battery pack. In addition, the temperature uniformity of the battery pack deteriorates as the discharge rate increases. The overall optimization method for the uneven distribution of heat sources can be used as a reference for the structural design of the cooling plate.
Heating Strategy for Electric Vehicular Battery Pack Based on CFD Analysis

Abstract:The performance of lithium batteries relies significantly on the ambient temperature. They often become ineffective or demonstrate a shortened lifespan at low temperatures. Therefore, designing an effective, uniform, and energy-efficient heating system for the battery pack becomes the key to the development of electric vehicles in northern environment. The method of numerical simulation adopted from computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was introduced, and the porous theory was used to conduct a simplified analysis of battery module in the battery pack. The rise of temperature during the heating process of the battery pack of electric vehicles was simulated, and the simulation and experimental results were compared. Results showed that the combination of simulation method and porous simplification model was effective in evaluating the heating system of electric vehicle battery pack. The heating strategy was modified based on the analysis results, and a heating system that consisted of multiple heating zones was designed, which can keep the heating power of each part in control. Results showed that there was an overall power reduction of 167 W (about 7%) under the optimized multi-zone heating system, and the battery pack can still be heated from −13 °C to 5 °C within 50 minutes, with the maximum temperature difference within the zones of the battery pack being kept under 5 °C.
Electro-Thermal Modeling of a Hollow Structure Design of Cylindrical Lithium-Ion Battery

Abstract:Thermal management of the lithium-ion battery is important for battery performance and safety. The traditional cylindrical lithium-ion battery has temperature unevenness problem, especially when operating at high rate. The difference between measurable surface temperature and maximum temperature of the battery may be large. A hollow structure design of the cylindrical lithium-ion battery is proposed. The hollow cylinder structure has the advantages of better cooling performance and the convenience of putting temperature sensors inside of the battery. The battery model coupled with electrochemical model and thermal model is established. Thermal states of the hollow battery and the solid battery under air cooling condition are simulated for comparison. Results show that the maximum temperature of charging hollow battery is lower and the temperature unevenness problem is also improved. At higher charge rate, the advantages of the hollow cylinder structure become more significant. When the inner diameter increases, the total volume of the hollow battery becomes larger quickly, leading to lower volume energy density. The conflict between this drawback and advantages of lower maximum temperature and better temperature unevenness is analyzed.
Multidisciplinary Optimization of Thermal Insulation Layer for Stratospheric Airship with a Solar Array

Abstract:Stratospheric airships with a solar array have demonstrated overwhelming superiority in many aspects, such as earth observation, meteorological survey, and communication relay. The solar array supplies sufficient power for the airship to be in flight for months, but excessive heat is also transferred to the airship, causing high overpressure of inner gas. However, the optimal arrangement of the insulation layer on the airship has not been investigated. The theoretical method, including the geometry, thermal, and energy models, is developed and validated. The distribution of the temperatures and power of the solar cells, with different installation angles on the curved surface, is investigated. The thickness of insulation layer has a significant effect on the solar output power and internal pressure of the airship. An optimized configuration of the insulation structure is proposed, in order to improve the total output energy of solar array. The optimized configuration of insulations helps to reduce the structural mass by 24.9% and increase the payload mass by 9%. Moreover, the optimized arrangement improves the output energy of solar array in a year, and the maximum improvement is 8.2% on the winter solstice. The work displays the optimization of the thermal insulation layer for the stratospheric airship with a solar array, in order to improve the everyday energy acquirement during flight in a year.

Abstract:A balanced structural optimization on the strength of the response surface method is conducted for the battery module with a single‐layer sleeved heat spreader plate (SHSP). The module contains 4 × 5 cylindrical batteries, connected with the SHSP through the tubular sleeve structure. The SHSP structure, simple yet reliable in construction, not only enlarges the heat dissipation area of module but also facilitates temperature uniformity across the batteries through on‐plate heat spreading. First, the numerical model is constructed to examine the thermal performance of module. The sensitivity of the structure parameters, including the SHSP thickness, sleeve structure height, caudal length of SHSP, and central distance of batteries, are examined. A balanced optimization is then conducted by varying the structural parameters to obtain the objective functions based on central composite design. Besides the temperature maxima and temperature nonuniformity, the nonthermal metrics such as the pressure differential and the mass of SHSP are also taken as the design objectives to obtain an optimal configuration between performance and energy efficiency. Moreover, the effect of inlet velocity on the module performance is studied. The results indicate that with the optimal SHSP configuration, the temperature nonuniformity of module can be minimized even under lower fan power consumption.

Abstract:Effective energy management systems are critical for long endurance stratospheric airships. This article presents a hybrid energy system consisting of one renewable (photovoltaic) and two energy storage (lithium battery/regenerative fuel cell) systems. After examining different models of energy harvesting, balancing, and storage, we present the details of a rule-based energy management strategy. We further validate it by presenting the various power curves and state of charge (SOC) measurements. The results indicate that the strategy is effective for energy management planning.

Abstract:A battery‐FHP‐coupled model is established for an air‐cooled battery pack. The battery thermal performance in different FHP configurations at flying cars discharge rate is analyzed and compared. The influence of coolant parameters on battery thermal performance is investigated. Summary Flying car is an effective transport to solve current traffic congestion. The power batteries in flying cars discharge at a high current rate in the takeoff and landing phase, evoking a severe thermal issue. Flat heat pipe (FHP) is a relatively new type of battery thermal management technology, which can effectively maintain the temperature uniformity of the battery pack. We have constructed a resistance‐based thermal model of the batteries considering the impact of the state of charge (SOC), battery temperature, and current on the battery heat generation. The FHP model is developed based on segmental heat conduction model, and integrated into the battery model to form the battery‐FHP‐coupled model for a battery module. Experiments are carried out to verify its accuracy. Then, the battery thermal performance is analyzed under the different discharging conditions including constant discharge rates and dynamic discharge rates for flying cars. Under the condition of the flying cars, the battery maximum temperature appears at the end of takeoff stage, while the maximum temperature difference appears during the forward flight segment. Moreover, different FHP heat dissipation structures are studied to further improve the battery thermal performance. The configuration with the best performance is adopted for the battery pack, and it can meet the heat dissipation requirements of the pack at a discharge rate of 3C or that of flying cars. Finally, the influence of inlet cooling air velocity and temperature on battery thermal performance is investigated. According to the research results, air velocity has little effect on the battery maximum temperature at the discharge rate of flying cars, but it can obviously affect the temperature decrease rate. Besides, the battery maximum temperature and its temperature difference develop linearly with the air temperature.

Abstract:Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part G: Journal of Aerospace Engineering, Ahead of Print. This paper proposes a propulsion optimization method with the surrogate modeling technique based on the coupling relationship between the propulsion and energy subsystem to achieve high-altitude airship weight reduction and figure out key factors. Propeller and motor surrogate models were constructed based on an inhouse fluid-structure solver and validated by the wind tunnel experiment. Solar intensity variation, solar cell distribution, and energy balance were modeled for the calculation of energy system weight. By minimizing the total weight of propulsion end energy subsystem as the goal and energy balance as the constraint, an optimization architecture was built. And a typical high-altitude airship is optimized as an example. Propulsion design variables were analyzed to figure out the influence on the airship's overall performance. The results show that introducing energy balance into propulsion system optimal design can effectively reduce the total weight of the propulsion and energy system.

Abstract:The forced air cooling system is of great significance in the battery thermal management system because of its simple structure and low cost. The influences of three factors (the air-inlet angle, the air-outlet angle and the width of the air flow channel between battery cells) on the heat dissipation of a Lithium-ion battery pack are researched by experiments and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. Then the three structure parameters are optimized by using single factor analysis and orthogonal test method. It is shown that the layout of the air flow channels has great impacts on the maximum temperature and the temperature difference. The best cooling performance is obtained under the condition of 2.5° air-inlet angle, 2.5° air-outlet angle and equal channels width. With the optimization method, the maximum temperature and the temperature difference are decreased by 12.82% and 29.72% respectively. Therefore, the presented approach in this paper is able to optimize the battery thermal management system for electric vehicles.

Abstract:The battery thermal management system plays an important role in electric vehicles, and determines the performance and the lifespan of electric vehicles. In this paper, optimization of the heat dissipation structure of lithium-ion battery pack is investigated based on thermodynamic analyses to optimize discharge performance and ensure lithium-ion battery pack safety. First, the heat generation and heat transfer model of the lithium-ion battery cell are derived based on thermodynamic theory. Then, the thermodynamic governing equations of battery are established based on Fluent, and the model is verified by comparing simulation data and experimental data. Afterwards, the simulation model of pure electric vehicles and the model of the heat generation rate are established using ADVISOR to analyze the dynamic performance of the battery pack. Finally, the air-cooling structure of the battery pack is designed according to the temperature field distribution obtained from the Fluent simulation, which is optimized using a back propagation neural network combined with genetic algorithms for the air flow rate, air flow channel spacing between cells, and air inlet angle. Based on the results of the optimized structure, the optimized structure effectively increases the heat dissipation performance and eliminates temperature inconsistency between the cells.

Abstract:Lithium-ion battery packs are made by many batteries, and the difficulty in heat transfer can cause many safety issues. It is important to evaluate thermal performance of a battery pack in designing process. Here, a multiscale method combining a pseudo-two-dimensional model of individual battery and three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics is employed to describe heat generation and transfer in a battery pack. The effect of battery arrangement on the thermal performance of battery packs is investigated. We discuss the air-cooling effect of the pack with four battery arrangements which include one square arrangement, one stagger arrangement and two trapezoid arrangements. In addition, the air-cooling strategy is studied by observing temperature distribution of the battery pack. It is found that the square arrangement is the structure with the best air-cooling effect, and the cooling effect is best when the cold air inlet is at the top of the battery pack. We hope that this work can provide theoretical guidance for thermal management of lithium-ion battery packs.

Abstract:Abstract The new energy electric vehicle, which takes clean electric energy as the main driving force, has no pollutants and exhaust emissions during its operation and has a higher energy utilization ratio than the fuel locomotive. Therefore, electric vehicles have been widely developed in recent years. The maximum temperature and temperature consistency of the battery pack in the electric vehicle have a great influence on the life and safety of the battery. In this paper, the thermal management system of the lithium battery pack was taken as the research object. The temperature distribution and uniformity of the battery pack under different heat dissipation conditions were analyzed based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The multi-objective optimization method of the battery pack thermal management system was carried out by combining the surrogate model with fast non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II). The maximum temperature of the battery pack obtained from candidate point 1 is 310.72 K, which is 4.99 K lower than the initial model temperature, and the temperature standard deviation is 0.76 K, with a reduction rate of 51.9%. Experiment results showed that maximum difference between the optimized and experimental value of the maximum temperature is 0.8 K, and the error was within 1 K. Therefore, the multi-objective optimization method proposed in this paper has high accuracy.

Abstract:A novel design optimization method is proposed to optimize the air passageway for an air-cooled battery pack with a 3P4S configuration (three strings in parallel and four cells in each string). This method includes the electrothermal model for the air-cooled pack and the optimization algorithm. Unlike other thermal models for battery packs, the model established in this article considers the interaction between the state of charge (SOC), current, heat generation, and temperature at the cell level and the impact of uneven cooling on the current distribution in the parallel branches at the pack level. Experiments are conducted to verify the prediction accuracy of the electrothermal model. The results show that the proposed model can accurately predict the electrical and thermal parameters under different conditions. For example, the root-mean-square error (RMSE) of temperature is less than 0.5 °C under all test conditions. As for the optimization algorithm, the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is used. In order to increase the optimization searching speed and accuracy of PSO, the inertia factor is added to the velocity formula, and the spatial neighborhood method is used. The design optimization method is used to optimize the air passageway of an air-cooling pack. It is found that the optimized pack not only has a lower maximum cell temperature and a smaller temperature variation among cells than the original pack but also has a smaller difference of branch current and a longer lifespan.

Abstract:For energy storage batteries, thermal management plays an important role in effectively intervening in the safety evolution and reducing the risk of thermal runaway. Because of simple structure, low cost, and high reliability, air cooling is the preferred solution for the thermal management. Based on a 50 MW/100 MW energy storage power station, this paper carries out thermal simulation analysis and research on the problems of aggravated cell inconsistency and high energy consumption caused by the current rough air-cooling design and proposes the optimal air-cooling design scheme of the energy storage battery box, which makes the structure of battery module more reasonable and the temperature distribution between the batteries more uniform. It has a certain guiding significance for energy saving, consumption reduction, and stable operation of energy storage systems.

Abstract:An effective and robust thermal management system can control the temperature of lithium batteries and maintain the long service life and high performance of the module. In this work, the thermal design and optimization of cylindrical battery packs based on air-cooled thermal management strategies are studied. Lumped model is implemented to investigate the thermophysical characteristics of single cell, and the experimental measurements is used to determine the transient heat generation of cylindrical lithium batteries under different discharge rates. On this basis, the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method is used to analyze the temperature of the battery pack, and the heat dissipation performance of the air-cooled heat management system is explored. Finally, different air cooling strategies are investigated by changing the area and position of inlet and outlet to obtain the best cooling scheme. The results indicate that the multi-inlet and multi-outlet structure in this paper can significantly lower the temperature and improve the temperature uniformity in the battery pack. A better air-cooling performance can be obtained under the optimal parameter configuration, which will help the design of the air-cooled battery thermal management system.

Abstract:Sufficient energy is demonstrated overwhelming superiority in both vehicles and aircrafts. Limited by the energy density, energy storage represented by Lithium-ion battery cannot meet the increasing energy requirements of diverse payloads on solar-powered stratospheric airship for months or years. In this paper, the hybrid fuel cell/battery system for stratospheric airship is presented. The relationship between the real wind field and the demand power is illustrated. Based on the reanalysis of historical wind data, the probabilistic model of demand propulsion power is established and integrated with the training environment. The deep reinforcement learning method is adopted to solve the energy management problem. The prioritized experience replay with extra identifier, which encourages the utilization of high-value samples without identifier, is proposed. Comparative analysis shows the proposed method is effective in determining the management strategy with promising convergence speed. The results demonstrate that changing the SOC reference of the proposed method from 0.4 to 0.7 can result in 5.9% increment in energy consumption. Furthermore, the potential decline of regulation capability of the hybrid system and the corresponding influence on the nighttime energy balance is investigated. The proposed method has reference value for advance alarm of power supply failure during long term flight.

Abstract:In this research, a novel multi-physics model is proposed to facilitate battery thermal management system (BTMS) design and optimization. For parametric simulations and optimization, a new optimization framework is developed for BTMS by utilizing numerical simulations, artificial intelligence and multi-objective genetic algorithm. It is found that BTMS is inadequate in addressing thermal issues that arise in aged battery pack, primarily because of the increased total heat generation rate resulting from battery aging effect. Besides, it has also been observed that BTMS plays a significant role in managing battery electrochemical performance. Meanwhile, optimizing mini-channel geometrical parameters, mini-channel arrangement and nanoparticle volume fraction are found to be an effective method to further control battery thermal issues. However, it is observed that reducing battery temperature invariably incurs a reduction in battery average potential. Therefore, multi-variables global optimizations are conducted based on various combinations of weighted coefficients and optimization strategies. It is found that all obtained optimization schemes can achieve the trade-offs among battery thermal behaviors, pressure loss and electrochemical performance, with meeting the desired temperature requirements even during long-term operation. Furthermore, the selection about weighted coefficient and optimization strategy can be tailored to meet the specific demands and prerequisites of various engineering applications.

Abstract:Lithium-ion batteries are key components in cargo container-type large capacity energy system. It is essential to maintain temperature and thermal profile of the battery pack within the desired range in order to ensure its cycle life. Based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method, a periodic air-cooling method is proposed to improve the temperature distribution of the batteries. The effects of 3 different air-cooling method on heat dissipation and energy saving of the battery pack are compared. The results indicated that: (1) The directional air supply method can significantly restrain temperature rise of the batteries in the middle of the battery pack, but it is hard to blow to the side, which easily lead to uneven temperature distribution. (2) By changing the air supply direction, the periodic airflow can enhance the airflow disturbance, improve the heat dissipation effect and thermal uniformity of the battery. (3) With the directional airflow method, reducing the airflow temperature and increasing the airflow rate can nearly achieve the same result as periodic air-cooling method, but the latter is more energy efficient. This paper provided a new approach to the battery thermal management under energy saving conditions.
