Abstract:Polycystic ovary syndrome(PCOS) is one of the most common endocrine and metabolic diseases in women of reproductive age. The main clinical features are hyperandrogenemia, sparse ovulation or anovulation and polycystic ovary. It is often accompanied by insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome and chronic inflammatory state. The phenotype of the disease is diverse, and the etiology and pathophysiological mechanism of the disease remain unclear. However, a growing number of studies suggest that mitochondrial dysfunction may be the common mechanism behind the heterogeneous presentation of women with PCOS. In this review, we will review the research progress of mitochondrial dysfunction in polycystic ovary syndrome, especially the related mechanisms of fertility decline, in order to provide theoretical basis for further exploration of its pathogenesis and etiological treatment.
