Abstract:Objective: Taking the left-behind children(LBC) who were defined in the announcement No.13[2016] as the subjects, the“Family Adversity Scale for Parent-absent Children in Rural China”which was published in 2011 is aimed to be revised. Methods: According to the results of literature review, depth interview, and open-ended questionnaire, the theoretical dimensions of the original scale was deleted and supplemented, and the initial scale was developed. 2541 left-behind children participated in the research to analyze the reliability and validity of the initial scale. Finally, a revised adversity scale with 33 items for Left-behind Children was achieved. Results: Exploring factors analysis(EFA) showed that Adversity Scale of LBC consisted of eight factors as follows: lack of parental care, inadequate supervision, deserted family atmosphere, poor life care, poor learning management, lack of communication, poor family coping ability and perception of discrimination, which accounted for the total variance 59.22%. The results of Confirming factors analysis(CFA) also supported the eight-factors model. The scale and its factors scores were positively correlated with loneliness, negative emotions and delinquent behavior, while negatively correlated with subjective well-being, positive emotions, and pro-social behaviors.Multivariate analysis results showed that Left-behind Children scored significantly higher than Non Left-behind Children in all the 8 factors. The Cronbach’s α coefficient of the total scale was 0.90, and 0.69~0.82 for its factors. Re-test reliability was 0.71~0.87. Conclusion: The revised Adversity Scale of Left-behind Children in China rural area has good reliability and validity, and it meets psychometric standards.
