Abstract:Understanding the impact and restriction of climate change on potential distribution of bamboo forest is crucial for sustainable management of bamboo forest and bamboo-based economic development. In this study, climatic variables and maximum entropy model were used to simulate the potential distribution of bamboo forest in China under the future climate scenarios. Seven climatic variables, such as Spring precipitation, Summer precipitation, Autumn precipitation, average annual relative humidity, Autumn average temperature, average annual temperature range and annual total radiation, were selected as input variables of maximum entropy model based on the relative importance of those climate variables for predicting bamboo forest presence. The suitable ranges of the seven climatic variables for potential distribution of bamboo forest were 337–794 mm, 496–705 mm, 213–929 mm, 74.3%–83.4%, 16.6–23.8 °C, 2.3–10.1 °C and 3.2 × 104–4.3 × 104 W m−2, respectively. Under RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 climate scenarios, the suitable area of bamboo forest growth first increased and then decreased, and showed range contractions towards the interior and expansions towards southwest in China. The results of the present study can serve as a useful reference to dynamic monitoring of the spatial distribution and sustainable utilization of bamboo forest in the future under climate change.
Studies on Surface Runoff and Nitrogen Loss in Bamboo Forest Ecosystem

Abstract:Through setting runoff fields in typical bamboo (Phylostachys pubescens) forests to investigate the effect of different fertilization treatments on runoff and nutrient losses under field conditions.The results showed that in the period from June to December of 2009,under the treatments of control (CK),site-specific nutrient management (SSNM),and farmers’ fertilizer practice (FFP),the runoff loss reached 279,284,267 m3/hm2,the soil particle loss reached 393,369,396 kg/hm2,respectively.The runoff and soil particle losses had close correlations with the precipitation of the period.Largest losses happened in August for runoff and in June,July and August for soil particles.The losses of particle nitrogen (PN) and water-soluble nitrogen (DN) are about 51% and 49% of the total N losses,respectively.The loss of water-soluble N in the period reached 0.37,0.46,0.49 kg/hm2 for CK,SSNM and FFP,respectively.The main factor influencing soil N loss is precipitation.Comparing with FFP,the SSNM treatment significantly reduced soil particle loss and water-soluble N loss as well in this experiment.
Simulation Rainfall Experiment of Soil and Water Loss Processes on Bamboo Forest Slopes Land under Different Managements

Abstract:The management methods of bamboo forest were divided into three types.They were non-till bamboo timber forest(BTF),bamboo shoots forest with once clearing weeds and bamboo subterranean stem per year(BSF-1) and per two years(BSF-2).The process experiments of runoff and sediment yield were conducted on bamboo forest slope fields under different managements in Linan and Anji counties of Zhejiang province.The testing runoff plots were designed with the slope of 20°,the area of 3 m×1.5 m,respectively on the different managemental bamboo forest slope lands.The experimental method of using rainfall simulator was taken,simulated rainfall intensity of 31.8~114 mm/h for 0.5~1 h from runoff occurring.The process characteristics of runoff and sediment yield were analyzed on the basis of simulated rainfall of 8 sets.Some conclusions were obtained as following.① In the experimental process per set,the difference between minimum and maxmum of sediment amount was very little on the BTF plot,and it was very great on the BSF-1 and BSF-2 plots.The maxmum of sediment amount occurred at beginning of runoff yield,and it decreased as rainfall experiment lasted.② Under the same rainfall intensity,the runoff volume was very littler on the BSF-1 and BSF-2 plots than on the BTF plot,but the sediment amount was very greater with thousand times increasing on the BSF-1 and BSF-2 plots than on the BTF plot.③ As the rainfall intensity increased,the erosion modulus increased rapidly on the BSF-1 and BSF-2 plots with hundredfold,relatively,the erosion modulus increased slowly on the BTF plot.④ Sediment amount increased with a index rule,as repeated times of clearing weeds and bamboo subterranean stem increased and rainfall intensity increased.⑤ According to 8 sets rainfall experiments,the critical erosive rainfall intensity was determined as ≥60.6 mm/h.Above results can provde some scientific basis for bamboo forest management.
Spatiotemporal Estimation Of Bamboo Forest Aboveground Carbon Storage Based On Landsat Data In Zhejiang, China

Abstract:China is one of the countries with the most abundant bamboo forest resources in the world, and Zhejiang province is among the top-3 Chinese provinces with richest bamboo forests. For rational bamboo forests management, it is of great significance to study the spatiotemporal dynamic changes of Aboveground Carbon (AGC) stocks of bamboo forest in Zhejiang. In this study, remote sensing variables, such as spectral, vegetation indices and texture features of bamboo forest in Zhejiang, were extracted from 32 Landsat TM and OLI images got from four different years (2000, 2004, 2008 and 2014). These variables were subsequently selected with stepwise regression method to build an estimation model of AGC of the bamboo forests. The results showed that (1) the accuracy of bamboo forest remote sensing information extracted from the four different years was high with a classification accuracy of >76.26% and an accuracy of users of >91.62%. The classification area of bamboo forest was highly consistent with the area from forest resource inventory, and the area accuracy was over 96.50%; (2) the estimation model performed well in predicting the AGC in Zhejiang for different years. The correlation coefficient for estimated and measured AGC was between 63% and 72% with low root mean square error; (3) the derived AGC of the bamboo forests in Zhejiang province increased gradually from 2000 to 2014, with the AGC density of 6.75 Mgha(-1), 10.95 Mgha(-1), 15.25 Mgha(-1) and 19.07 Mgha(-1) respectively, and the average annual growth of 0.88 Mgha(-1). The spatiotemporal evolution of bamboo forest AGC in Zhejiang province had a close relationship with the gradual expansion of bamboo forest in the province and the differentiation of management levels in different regions.

Abstract:Nitrogen (N) losses from agricultural fields have been extensively studied. In contrast, surface runoff and N losses have rarely been considered for bamboo forests that are widespread in regions such as southern China. The thriving of bamboo industries has led to increasing fertilizer use in bamboo forests. In this study, we evaluated surface runoff and N losses in runoff following different fertilization treatments under field conditions in a bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescens) forest in the catchment of Lake Taihu in Jiangsu, China. Under three different fertilization regimes, i.e., control, site-specific nutrient management (SSNM), and farmer's fertilization practice (FFP), the water runoff rate amounted to 356, 361, and 342 m3 ha−1 and accounted for 1.91, 1.98, and 1.85 % of the water input, respectively, from June 2009 to May 2010. The total N losses via surface runoff ranged from 1.2 to 1.8 kg ha−1. Compared with FFP, the SSNM treatment reduced total nitrogen (TN) and dissolved nitrogen (DN) losses by 31 and 34 %, respectively. The results also showed that variations in N losses depended mainly on runoff fluxes, not N concentrations. Runoff samples collected from all treatments throughout the year showed TN concentrations greater than 0.35 mg L−1, with the mean TN concentration in the runoff from the FFP treatment reaching 8.97 mg L−1. The loss of NO3 −–N was greater than the loss of NH4 +–N. The total loss of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) reached 23–41 % of the corresponding DN. Therefore, DON is likely the main N species in runoff from bamboo forests and should be emphasized in the assessment and management of N losses in bamboo forest.
Information Extracting and Spatiotemporal Evolution of Bamboo Forest Based on Landsat Time Series Data in Zhejiang Province

Abstract:[Objective] Monitoring bamboo forest resources and their changes using time series remote sensing has a great significance in achieving scientific management and efficient utilization of bamboo forest resources. [Method] This study extracted the information and analyzed spatiotemporal evolution of bamboo forest based on the Landsat5 TM and Landsat8 OLI time series data in 2000, 2004, 2008, and 2014 throughout Zhejiang Province to reveal the change of bamboo forest area and its response to land use change.Firstly, the land utilization information and spatiotemporal distribution of bamboo forest was extracted by maximum likelihood classification based on time series Landsat data, which was preprocessed by atmospheric correction and geometric correction. Secondly, the spatiotemporal evolution of bamboo forest during 2000—2014 using two indexes (variation amplitude and dynamic degree). Finally, the relationship between spatiotemporal dynamic of bamboo forest and land utilization pattern was analyzed based on the established provincial land use transition matrix.[Result] The result showed that: 1) The extracted bamboo forest information based on time series Landsat data achieved a high accuracy, which yield more than 75％ of classification accuracy and 91％ of user's accuracy, and the extracted bamboo forest area was highly correlated with investigation data, with area accuracy of beyond 96％. 2) The bamboo forest in Zhejiang Province was increased from 2000 to 2014, the variation amplitude and annual change rate were 16.55％ and 1.18％ respectively. 3) The bamboo forest area accounted for 7.33％ in 2000, and increased to 8.56％ in 2014, wherein the land use change of coniferous forest, broad-leaved forest and cultivated land have a great contribution to the increased of bamboo forest area, with the contribution rate of 28.62％, 37.23％ and 16.15％, respectively.[Conclusion] The bamboo forest resources could be accurately monitored based on the Landsat time series data, and the decreasing of coniferous forest, broad-leaved forest and cultivated land has significant influences on the spatiotemporal evolution of bamboo forest.
Mapping Spatiotemporal Decisions for Sustainable Productivity of Bamboo Forest Land

Abstract:Properly mapping the sustainability of bamboo forest production plays an important role in providing basic strategies for decision makers to ensure sustainable use of bamboo resources. Understanding the response pattern of drought, poor management, elevation, and barren soil to bamboo forest ecosystem productivity is critical to formulating appropriate improvement strategies of sustainable management of bamboo forest productivity for addressing growing challenges of bamboo forest land degradation. The objectives of this study were to quantify differences in productivity, meteorological, topographical, soil, and bamboo distribution and structure factors under different sustainable management levels of bamboo forest ecosystem productivity in order to support management decision making in a spatiotemporally explicit context. We constructed an innovative three‐layer index system for the sustainable management of bamboo forest productivity by integrating productivity, meteorological, soil, topographic, bamboo distribution, and structure factors to promote sustainable management and spatiotemporal decision making, particularly in bamboo forest areas with low productivity. The partial least squares (PLS) path model was used to analyze the spatiotemporal effects of different factors on bamboo forest productivity and to create sustainable management maps that could be used for spatially informed decision making regarding bamboo forest production. The results showed the spatial and temporal variations in gross primary productivity (GPP), net primary productivity (NPP), and net ecosystem exchange (NEE) in bamboo forests. The sustainable management index was also mapped each year throughout the study area. We divided the index value range into five management‐friendly classes, which were shown to be directly related to GPP, NPP, NEE, Slope, Aspect, soil texture, hydrolytic nitrogen, and Abundance. We found that the areas with relatively high sustainable management levels (I and II) occupied only 18.94% of the bamboo forest area and exhibited a highly clustered distribution. Most of the other areas (78.67%) had relatively low levels of sustainable management (III and IV), and their distribution was rather scattered. The remaining 2.39% of the bamboo forest area that had the lowest sustainable management level (V) was small in area, fragmented, and not conducive to intensive management. The results of the present study can serve as a useful reference for bamboo forest management, which is of great importance for bamboo‐based ecosystems and economies.
Effects of a Funnel-Shaped Canopy on Rainfall Redistribution and Plant Water Acquisition in a Banana (musa Spp.) Plantation

Abstract:Most of the world's tropical landscapes are experiencing changes in land-use and land-cover. In Yunnan Province in southwestern China, land-use changes are widespread throughout the tropics, with large areas of tropical forests being converted to banana (Musa spp.) plantations. In this study, we explored the effects of banana trees' funnel-shaped leaves on rainfall redistribution and plant water acquisition during the 2017/2018 rainy season. Both the conventional and isotopic (delta D and delta O-18) methods were used to conduct rainfall partitioning, assess throughfall distribution, and predict plant water sources. We found that the mean contribution of throughfall, stemflow, and interception loss to gross rainfall (rainfall amount: 0.3-33.3 mm) were 71.8 +/- 6.8 %, 17.6 +/- 3.6 %, and 10.6 +/- 3.8 %, respectively. The percentage of stemflow under the banana canopy was noticeably higher than previously reported for other species. The maximum amount of throughfall below the banana canopy was 1.4-4.4 times greater than the gross rainfall (rainfall amount: 14.7-70.5 mm). Soil water content and soil water delta D and delta O-18 showed both horizontal and vertical heterogeneities within the banana plantation. Analysis of delta D and delta O-18 indicated that banana trees absorbed 72.3 % of their water from the shallow soil stratum at 0-30 cm depth. In addition, the acquisition proportion of 0-80 cm soil water ranged from 10.2%-16.3% in the horizontal directions (0-360 degrees). These findings indicated that banana trees' wide and long leaves considerably altered rainfall redistribution, which in turn affected their water acquisition characteristics. As banana plantations expand in this area, there is an urgent need to further examine environmental consequences such as soil erosion and surface runoff resulting from banana cultivation.

Compared with FFP, the SSNM treatment reduced total P (TP) by 5%, total dissolved phosphorus (DP) loss by 15% and total bioavailable phosphorus (BAP) loss by 8%.

Abstract:The effect of different fertilization treatments on phosphorus loss under field conditions was investigated through setting runoff plots in bamboo (Phylostachys pubescens) forests. The results showed that, the average total phosphorus (TP) concentration of the runoff was 0.59 mg/L, and the average bioavailable phosphorus (BAP) concentration was 0.22 mg/L during the study period. The total phosphorus (TP) concentration of the 95% observed runoff samples exceeded 0.10 mg/L. Compared with FFP, the SSNM treatment reduced total dissolved phosphorus (DP) loss by 16.7%, reduced total bioavailable phosphorus (BAP) loss by 11.0%. Phosphorus was highly correlated with both rainfall and runoff. The largest phosphorus losses occurred in June, July and August, which had the largest rainfall. Significant correlations also existed between particulate phosphorus (PP) and sediment (R2 0.73-0.88).
Sustainable Fertilizer Management for Reduction of Greenhouse Gases Emission in Bamboo Forest

Abstract:Excessive fertilizer use has been recognized as a key factor in increasing agricultural and forestry greenhouse gases ( GHG) emission . Previous studies found that proper fertilizer using control strategy can reduce agricultural CO2 , N2 O , CH4 emission , however , influence crop yields as well . Bamboo is an important economic plant in China , which has been intensively cultivated in recent years to satisfy increasing social demands of bamboo products . To maintain rapid growth of bamboo , the fertilizer using amount in bamboo forest is significantly higher than other human-planted forests such as Pinus massoniana and eucalyptus forest . Therefore , it is necessary to explore a sustainable fertilizer management approach which could achieve the optimum balance between low GHG emission and high production in bamboo forest . The purpose of this study is to develop a sustainable fertilizer management approach by estimating the impact of different fertilization practices on GHG emission and biomass production of bamboo forest comprehensively . It is supposed to reduce current GHG emission from bamboo plantation without inhibiting bamboo production . Integrated with the surveys/statistics data , the DNDC ( denitrification-decomposition) biogeochemical model was applied to simulate seven typical fertilization scenarios of a Moso bamboo forest in Anji County , Zhejiang Province during 2000-2010 . The fertilization scenarios were designed by different fertilizer types ( commercial organic compound fertilizer , cow manure , ammonium bicarbonate) and application dosages ( medium , low , high) . Three indicators were adopted for the assessment :1) the global warming potential (GWP) to assess the total CO 2 and N2 O emission from studied bamboo plantation; 2) the net primary production ( NPP) to assess the bamboo production;3) the GHG emission per bamboo biomass increments ( Cflux/Cbiomass ) . All the indicator values were calculated from the DNDC modeling results . According to the assessment results , manure had the strongest effect on reducing GHG emission by increasing the soil organic carbon ( SOC ) , and the GWP under high amount of commercial organic fertilizer and manure application ( scenario M H) decreased to -11.3 t/( hm2.a) while the value under none fertilization condition was 1.7 t/( hm2. a ) ; the inorganic N fertilizer showed no obvious impact on CO 2 emission but had strong effect on stimulating N2 O emissions , and the high amount of inorganic N fertilizer ( scenario ABH) led to a 12.2 times higher net GWP than the situation without fertilization , which was recognized as the most negative scenario for low-carbon fertilizer management . Under seven fertilization scenarios , the bamboo biomass increments showed no obvious difference compared with the situation without fertilization . However , the NPP under the M scenario ( common amount of commercial organic fertilizer and manure) was slightly higher than other scenarios with the value of 4.71 t/( hm2.a) , indicating that organic fertilizers and manure have stronger effect on improving bamboo production . Without inhibiting bamboo production , the high amount of manure application resulted in the lowest net GWP for per net primary production increment ( -2.4 kg/kg) , which had the most significant GHG reduction among all other scenarios . As a consequence , organic fertilizer shows more potential on reducing CO 2 , N2 O emission without decreasing bamboo production . From the GHG emission reduction perspective in sustainable fertilizer management for bamboo forest , advocating organic fertilizer application and reducing inorganic N fertilizer use can be a plausible approach towards the dual objectives of high bamboo production and GHG emission reduction .
Spatiotemporal patterns of remotely sensed phenology and their response to climate change and topography in subtropical bamboo forests during 2001-2017: a case study in Zhejiang Province, China

Abstract:Vegetation phenology has long been adapted to environmental change and is highly sensitive to climate change. Shifts in phenology also affect feedbacks of vegetation to environmental factors such as topography and climate by influencing spatiotemporal fluctuations in productivity, carbon fixation, and the carbon water cycle. However, there are limited studies which explores the combined effects of the climate and terrain on phenology. Bamboo forests exhibit the outstanding phenological phenomena and play an important role in maintaining global carbon balance in climate change. Therefore, the interaction mechanisms of climate and topography on bamboo forest phenology were analyzed in Zhejiang Province, China during 2001–2017. The partial least squares path model was applied to clarify the interplay between the climate and terrain impacts on phenology under land cover/use change. The results revealed that the average start date of the growing season (SOS) significantly advanced by 0.81 days annually, the end date of the growing season (EOS) was delayed by 0.27 days annually, and the length of the growing season (LOS) increased by 1.08 days annually. There were obvious spatial differences in the partial correlation coefficients between the climate factors and phenological metrics. Although the SOS, EOS and LOS were affected by different climatic factors, precipitation was the dominant factor. Due to the sensitivity of the SOS and EOS to precipitation, a 100 mm increase in regional annual precipitation would cause the average SOS to advance by 0.18 days and the EOS to be delayed by 0.12 days. Regarding the terrain factors affecting climate conditions, there were clear differences in the influences of different altitudes, slopes and aspect gradients on bamboo forest phenology. This study further showed that topographic factors mainly affected the interannual variations in phenological metrics under land cover/use change by affecting precipitation. This study clarified the spatial pattern of bamboo forest phenology and the interactive mechanisms between vegetative phenology and environmental conditions, as this information is crucial in assessing the impact of phenological change on the carbon sequestration potential of bamboo forests.

Abstract:Rainfall is an indispensable link in the atmospheric water cycle, which plays a critical role in forest hydrology. Quercus acutissima and Cunninghamia lanceolata are two fast-growing and economically important tree species in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. They are extensively applied in the restoration of vegetation, hydraulic engineering, and the development of artificial forests. The primary aims of this study were to describe and compare the changes in soil water content following rainfall events, while elucidating their relationships to environmental factors. From September 2012 to August 2013, we monitored the soil moisture at different depths every 30 min using commercially available soil moisture measuring devices. Hourly meteorological data were monitored over an open area at 200 m from the sample site, including photosynthetically active radiation (Par), air temperature (Ta), relative air humidity (RH), vapor pressure deficits (Vpd), rainfall, and wind speed. The results revealed that variations in the soil moisture content during summer (Cv = 0.231) and autumn (Cv = 0.0.170) were greater than during spring (Cv = 0.0.092) and winter (Cv = 0.0.055), with those in the deep soil moisture (Cv = 0.117) being smaller. The soil moisture content was significantly altered following the cessation of rainfall, where the initial and average moisture content, and the ACR of the soil increased with higher rainfall intensities. The ACR was positively correlated with Ta (γ = 0.16), RH (γ = 0.46) and rainfall (γ = 0.22), but negatively correlated with Par (γ = −0.29), Vpd (γ = −0.23), and wind speed (γ = −0.01). This study provides valuable information regarding the hydrological processes of artificial forests in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River.

Abstract:Moso bamboo plantations (Phyllostachys pubescens) are one of the most important forest types in southern China, but there is little information on the effects of their establishment and silvicultural practices on soil CO2 efflux. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effect of land use change from a natural broadleaf evergreen forest to Moso bamboo plantations and their management practices on soil CO2 efflux in a subtropical region of China using static closed chamber method. Regardless of the land uses or management practices, the effluxes over a 12-month period had a seasonal pattern, with the maximum effluxes observed in summer and the minimum in winter. Whereas there was no significant difference in the total annual soil CO2 efflux between the natural broadleaf evergreen forest (BL) and the conventionally managed bamboo forests (CM), soil CO2 efflux in the intensively managed bamboo forest (IM) was significantly higher. Soil temperature was the most important environmental factor affecting soil CO2 efflux rates for all three land uses. Soil moisture also had a significant positive correlation with soil CO2 efflux rates. Soil temperature and moisture had greater influence on soil CO2 efflux rate in the IM than the CM and BL forests. Soil dissolved organic C had a positive correlation with soil CO2 efflux rate in the CM, but had no significant correlation with that in the IM or the BL forests. Our study for the first time demonstrated that conversion of the natural subtropical broadleaf evergreen forest to Moso bamboo does not increase soil CO2 efflux. However, when bamboo forests are under intensive management with regular tillage, fertiliser application and weeding, significantly more soil CO2 emission occurs. Therefore, best management practices should be developed to reduce soil CO2 efflux in Moso bamboo plantations in the subtropical regions of China. (C) 2011 Elsevier By. All rights reserved.
Effects of Compound Fertilizer Decrement and Water-Soluble Humic Acid Fertilizer Application on Soil Properties, Bacterial Community Structure, and Shoot Yield in Lei Bamboo (Phyllostachys praecox) Plantations in Subtropical China

Abstract:Lei bamboo (Phyllostachys praecox) is an economically viable bamboo species with rich nutrition, a good taste, and a high yield. However, heavy fertilization and covering cultivation are used to produce off-season bamboo shoots, resulting in soil degradation and a decline in site productivity. This study investigated how compound fertilizer decrement and water-soluble humic acid fertilizer application affects soil properties and shoot yield in Lei bamboo plantations of subtropical China. The soil nutrients, enzyme activities, and shoot yield were examined, the bacterial community structure was determined using the high-throughput sequencing method, and their relationships were evaluated under different fertilization treatments: single compound fertilizer and compound fertilizer decrement with water-soluble humic acid fertilizer applications. Compared with those after single compound fertilizer treatments (CF1, CF2), water-soluble humic acid fertilizer addition (CF2HA1, CF2HA2) increased soil organic carbon (SOC), available phosphorus (AP), microbial biomass nitrogen (MBN) contents, the ratio of SOC to total nitrogen (C/N), and sucrase and acid phosphatase (Acp) activities, and decreased alkali hydrolyzed nitrogen (AN) and microbial biomass carbon (MBC) contents. The bacterial community phyla comprised 83.62%–86.16% Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria, and Chloroflexi. Water-soluble humic acid fertilizer application also significantly increased yields by over 30%. AP and MBN were important drivers affecting soil bacterial communities, whereas SOC, MBN, and Chloroflexi affected Lei bamboo shoots. Overall, compound fertilizer decrement and water-soluble humic acid fertilizer application shifted the available soil nutrients, sucrase and Acp activity, bacterial community diversity, and shoot yield. An improved understanding of humic acid and the application of humic acid water-soluble fertilizer are of great significance for soil improvement, ecological restoration, and the sustainable management of bamboo forests in the future.

Abstract:Acid rain is an important phenomenon in the context of global climate change, and can strongly influence forest ecology. There have been many studies on the response of plants to acid rain. However, the effect of acid rain on soil microbial communities is still largely unknown. Studying the effects of acid rain on soil microbial community structure is of great significance for predicting the interactive effects of multiple climate factors on forest ecosystems in the future. Moso bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis) is often cultivated not only for its delicious shoots and versatile culms, but also as an important biomass resource in southern China. However, with its robust growth and strong rhizomes, Moso bamboo populations have been expanding rapidly into adjacent forests. Different perturbation regimes, including disturbance caused by simulated acid rain, can have significant effects on a soil fungal community in response to Moso bamboo invasion into native broadleaf forest. To explore the effect of acid rain on a mixed forest of Moso bamboo and broadleaf soil fungi diversity, and to understand the relationship between fungal community structure and acid rain stress, a mixed forest of Moso bamboo and broadleaf (transition forest) in Zhejiang Tianmu Mountain Nature Reserve was taken as the study site, and simulated acid rain was set at different acidity according to the acid rain component of Linan in recent years. The experiment consisted of three different treatments. Three gradients of simulated acid rain treatment[pH 2.5, 4.0, and CK (lake water)] were designed to determine the effects of simulated acid rain on soil bacterial community diversity in transition forest. Soil DNA was extracted from the soils for polymerase chain reaction amplification and high-throughput sequencing to study the effects of acid rain on the fungal communities of the mixed forest of Moso bamboo and broadleaf soil. We obtained 601 287 sequences across the three types of sampling sites. Sequences were affiliated to 13 different phyla throughout the dataset. The dominant fungal groups were Ascomycota, Basidiomycota, Mortierellomycota, and Mucoromycota. Simulated acid significantly increased the number of operational taxonomic units, Ace index, and Chao1 index of fungal communities (P<0.05). The results of principal coordinates analysis (PCoA) also revealed that acid rain significantly modified the structure. The changes in soil fungal community structure were mainly related to the abundance of genera Bifiguratu, Geminibasidium, Purpureocillium, and Oidiodendron, which could be utilized as indicator species to determine changes in soil fungal community structure. Redundancy and correlation analysis showed that changes in basic physicochemical factors in the soil, such as soil pH and total nitrogen, can significantly influence the composition of the fungal community (P<0.05).

Abstract:The climate-induced changes in soil water patterns pose a serious threat to subtropical plantations. Mixed species stands have been advocated as an efficient way to enhance ecosystem stability. However, little is known about their possible impact on the soil water-holding capacity in the subtropics. In this study, we employed a stable hydrogen isotope to assess the contribution of rainfall to soil water (CRSW) in a pure Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata) plantation and in two mixtures of Chinese fir with Cinnamomum camphora or with Alnus cremastogyne after three different magnitudes of rainfall events in subtropical China. Furthermore, we used structure equation modeling (SEM) to quantify the relative importance of vegetation and soil properties on the CRSW. The results indicated that the CRSW did not differ among these three Chinese fir plantations after light rainfall, whereas the CRSW of moderate and heavy rainfall to soil water were 15.95% and 26.06% higher in Chinese fir plantation with Cinnamomum camphora, and 22.67% and 22.93% higher in Chinese fir plantation with Alnus cremastogyne than that in the pure Chinese fir plantation, respectively. SEM analysis showed that the vegetation biomass and soil properties significantly affected the CRSW following light rainfall, but the soil properties were the most important factors influencing the CRSW under moderate and heavy rainfall. Our findings demonstrate that the mixed conifer–broad-leaved plantation is a more effective strategy for improving the soil water-holding capacity than the pure conifer plantation in subtropical regions, which is conducive to coping with the frequent seasonal droughts and extreme precipitation events.

Canopy Interception Characteristics of Bamboo Forests in Northern Semitropics

Abstract:The canopy interception effects of northern subtropical bamboo forests were observed and studied in the Yangtze River delta forest located ecosystem station.Our result showed that the annual canopy interception amount was 171.7 mm,average canopy interception rate was 29.4%,which had better eco-hydrological effect.The canopy interception effects of bamboo forest were different markedly under the different rainfall level,rainfall intensities level,it had better interception effect under small rainfall level and small rainfall intensities.The canopy interception(rate) of bamboo forest was correlated with different degree of rainfall,rainfall intensities,rainfall duration,leaf area index,and aridity of branch leaves before rain.Rainfall duration played the first role on the canopy interception and rainfall intensities played the first role on the canopy interception rate.Based on Wang yan-hui's canopy interception model,we introduced the change dynamic of leaf area index to improve his model and we found the improved model had better applicability.

Abstract:Background: The expansion of bamboo forests increases environmental heterogeneity in tea plantation ecosystems, affecting soil properties and microbial communities. Understanding these impacts is essential for developing sustainable bamboo management and maintaining ecological balance in tea plantations. Methods: We studied the effect of the continuous expansion of Pleioblastus amarus into tea plantations, by establishing five plot types: pure P. amarus forest area (BF), P. amarus forest interface area (BA), mixed forest interface area (MA), mixed forest center area (TB), and pure tea plantation area (TF). We conducted a comprehensive analysis of soil chemical properties and utilized Illumina sequencing to profile microbial community composition and diversity, emphasizing their responses to bamboo expansion. Results: (1) Bamboo expansion significantly raised soil pH and enhanced levels of organic matter, nitrogen, and phosphorus, particularly noticeable in BA and MA sites. In the TB sites, improvements in soil nutrients were statistically indistinguishable from those in pure tea plantation areas. (2) Continuous bamboo expansion led to significant changes in soil bacterial diversity, especially noticeable between BA and TF sites, while fungal diversity was unaffected. (3) Bamboo expansion substantially altered the composition of less abundant bacterial and fungal communities, which proved more sensitive to changes in soil chemical properties. Conclusion: The expansion of bamboo forests causes significant alterations in soil pH and nutrient characteristics, impacting the diversity and composition of soil bacteria in tea plantations. However, as expansion progresses, its long-term beneficial impact on soil quality in tea plantations appears limited.
Effects of plantations on rainfall redistribution in a rocky mountain area of North China

Abstract:Cork oak has the highest stemflow, especially under low‐density conditions; structural characteristics of trees are the primary factors affecting rainfall redistribution. Selecting cork oak is suggested as the afforestation species in the rocky mountain region of North China, and afforestation should be done at a low density, which would contribute to enhancing local water conservation capacity and have a positive impact on the water balance within the ecosystem. Rainfall redistribution plays a crucial role in the water cycle. However, the main factors affecting the redistribution of rainfall remain uncertain. We chose three different plantations—cork oak (Quercus variabilis Bl.), oriental arborvitae (Platycladus orientalis L.) and black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.)—to investigate the role of plantations in rainfall redistribution and to determine the main factors influencing rainfall redistribution. The results indicated that cork oak exhibited the highest stemflow (0.34%) and the lowest canopy interception (12.58%), whereas black locust had the lowest stemflow (0.21%), and oriental arborvitae displayed the greatest canopy interception (32.8%). Under different density conditions for cork oaks, the stemflow was highest (0.39%) in low‐density forests with 750 trees ha−2 and lowest (0.34%) in medium‐density forests with 1100 trees ha−2. Meanwhile, the highest canopy interception (17.68%) was observed in high‐density forests (1300 trees ha−2), while the lowest interception rate (9.22%) was found in low‐density forests. The main factors affecting rainfall redistribution and their contribution rates were as follows: bark roughness index (35%), wind speed (18.6%), tree species (14.2%), diameter at breast height (11.2%), stand density (9.6%) and rainfall amount (5.4%). Our findings suggested that structural characteristics of trees are the primary factors affecting rainfall redistribution. Planting cork oak in the rocky mountain regions of North China is recommended because of its substantial stemflow production, particularly under low‐density growth conditions. Therefore, this study has significant guiding implications for the selection of afforestation tree species in similar rocky mountain areas globally.
