Abstract:The COVID-19 lockdowns led to major reductions in air pollutant emissions. Here, we quantitatively evaluate changes in ambient NO 2 , O 3 , and PM 2.5 concentrations arising from these emission changes in 11 cities globally by applying a deweathering machine learning technique. Sudden decreases in deweathered NO 2 concentrations and increases in O 3 were observed in almost all cities. However, the decline in NO 2 concentrations attributable to the lockdowns was not as large as expected, at reductions of 10 to 50%. Accordingly, O 3 increased by 2 to 30% (except for London), the total gaseous oxidant (O x = NO 2 + O 3 ) showed limited change, and PM 2.5 concentrations decreased in most cities studied but increased in London and Paris. Our results demonstrate the need for a sophisticated analysis to quantify air quality impacts of interventions and indicate that true air quality improvements were notably more limited than some earlier reports or observational data suggested.
Quantifying Air Pollutant Variations during COVID-19 Lockdown in a Capital City in Northwest China

Abstract:In the context of the outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), strict lockdown policies were implemented to control nonessential human activities in Xi’an, northwest China, which greatly limited the spread of the pandemic and affected air quality. Compared with pre-lockdown, the air quality index and concentrations of PM2.5, PM10, SO2, and CO during the lockdown reduced, but the reductions were not very significant. NO2 levels exhibited the largest decrease (52%) during lockdown, owing to the remarkable decreased motor vehicle emissions. The highest K+ and lowest Ca2+ concentrations in PM2.5 samples could be attributed to the increase in household biomass fuel consumption in suburbs and rural areas around Xi’an and the decrease in human physical activities in Xi’an (e.g., human travel, vehicle emissions, construction activities), respectively, during the lockdown period. Secondary chemical reactions in the atmosphere increased in the lockdown period, as evidenced by the increased O3 level (increased by 160%) and OC/EC ratios in PM2.5 (increased by 26%), compared with pre-lockdown levels. The results, based on a natural experiment in this study, can be used as a reference for studying the formation and source of air pollution in Xi’an and provide evidence for establishing future long-term air pollution control policies.

Abstract:Associated with the outbreak of new coronavirus in 2019 (COVID-19), lockdown measures were taken in spring 2020 in China, providing an ideal experiment to investigate the effects of emission controls on air quality. Using the observation data at 56 stations in Hebei province from the China National Environmental Monitoring Center from January 2019 to May 2020, along with the reanalysis meteorology data from ERA5, this study investigates the spatial and temporal variations of six air pollutants, and the clean and pollution events in COVID-19 period. Compared with the same periods in day and month in 2019 (SP19), the concentrations of sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of less than 10 μm (PM10), particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of less than 2.5 μm (PM2.5), and carbon monoxide (CO) decreased by 39.2%, 38.2%, 42.1%, 39.8%, and 24.8% for lockdown period, respectively; and decreased by 13.7%, 8.9%, 16.8%, 13.4%, and 10.6% for post-lockdown period, respectively. In contrast, ozone (O3) increased by 8.0% and 5.5% for lockdown and post-lockdown periods, respectively. The diurnal variation analysis shows that the air pollutants other than O3 decrease more in the morning time (6:00–10:00 local time) than in the afternoon time (14:00–18:00 local time) during both lockdown and post-lockdown periods compared to SP19, implying the potential contribution from pollution-meteorology interaction. After lockdown period, SO2 and NO2 resumed quickly in most cities other than in Zhangjiakou, which is a city with few industries making it more sensitive to meteorology. The significant improvement of air quality during the lockdown period suggests that the whole air quality is highly dependent on the pollutant emissions, while the relatively weak reduction of pollution events imply that the pollution events are more dependent on adverse weather conditions.
Spatial-temporal Responses of Atmospheric Pollutants to the COVID-19 Lockdown Across the Yangtze River Delta Region

Abstract:From January 1 to February 29, 2020, using hourly monitoring data of criteria pollutants in Shanghai, Nanjing, Hefei and Hangzhou, combined with the vertical columns of SO2 and NO2 from satellite inversions, we explore the pollution levels and response characteristics of urban atmospheric pollutants in the Yangtze River Delta region to the COVID-19 lockdown. The results show that, except O3, the average concentrations of air pollutants during the lockdown (from January 24 to February 10) were lower than that before the lockdown but higher than that after the lockdown, indicating that emission reduction was not the only factor in terms of governing air quality. The ratio of PM2.5/PM10 during the lockdown period was higher than before and after the lockdown, indicating that the secondary generation of aerosols has an important contribution to the fine particle pollution that still occurs during the lockdown period. We observed a significant increase of Ox levels (p <0.01) during the lockdown, suggesting that atmospheric oxidation capacity may be substantially enhanced in the context of NO2 reduction. Spatially, the O3 typically centered in individual city as hotspots, indicating its nature of local emission and formation. However, other pollutants (including PM2.5, PM10, CO, SO2, and NO2) demonstrated a gradual decrease gradient from north to south, satellite observations pinpointed that North China Plain was the major source of regional transport, which can be further validated by back-trajectory analysis. © 2021, Science Press. Abstract:In recent decades, air pollution has become an important environmental problem in the megacities of eastern China. How to control air pollution in megacities is still a challenging issue because of the complex pollutant sources, atmospheric chemistry, and meteorology. There is substantial uncertainty in accurately identifying the contributions of transport and local emissions to the air quality in megacities. The COVID-19 outbreak has prompted a nationwide public lockdown period and provides a valuable opportunity for understanding the sources and factors of air pollutants. The three-month period of continuous field observations for aerosol particles and gaseous pollutants, which extended from January 2020 to March 2020, covered urban, urban-industry, and suburban areas in the typical megacity of Hangzhou in the Yangtze River Delta in eastern China. In general, the concentrations of PM2.5–10, PM2.5, NOx, SO2, and CO reduced 58%, 47%, 83%, 11% and 30%, respectively, in the megacity during the COVID-Lock period. The reduction proportions of PM2.5 and CO were generally higher in urban and urban-industry areas than those in suburban areas. NOx exhibited the greatest reduction (>80%) among all the air pollutants, and the reduction was similar in the urban, urban-industry, and suburban areas. O3 increased 102%–125% during the COVID-Lock period. The daytime elevation of the planetary boundary layer height can reduce 30% of the PM10, PM2.5, NOx and CO concentrations on the ground in Hangzhou. During the long-range transport events, air pollutants on the regional scale likely contribute 40%–90% of the fine particles in the Hangzhou urban area. The findings highlight the future control and model forecasting of air pollutants in Hangzhou and similar megacities in eastern China.

Abstract:To avoid the spread of COVID-19, China implemented strict prevention and control measures, resulting in dramatic variations in air quality. Here, we applied a machine learning algorithm (random forest model) to eliminate meteorological effects and characterize the high-resolution variation characteristics of air quality induced by COVID-19 in Beijing, Wuhan, and Urumqi. Our RF model estimates showed that the highest decrease in deweathered PM2.5 in Wuhan (−43.6%) and Beijing (−14.0%) was at traffic stations during lockdown period (February 1- March 15, 2020), while it was at industry stations in Urumqi (−54.2%). Deweathered NO2 decreased significantly in each city (∼30%–50%), whereas accompanied by a notable increase in O3. The diurnal patterns show that the morning peaks of traffic-related NO2 and CO almost disappeared. Additionally, our results suggested that meteorological effects offset some of the reduction in pollutant concentrations. Adverse meteorological conditions played a leading role in the variation in PM2.5 concentration in Beijing, which contributed to +33.5%. The true effect of lockdown reduced the PM2.5 concentrations in Wuhan, Beijing, and Urumqi by approximately 14.6%, 17.0%, and 34.0%, respectively. In summary, lockdown is the most important driver of the decline in pollutant concentrations, but the reduction of SO2 and CO is limited and they are mainly influenced by changing trends. This study provides insights into quantifying variations in air quality due to the lockdown by considering meteorological variability, which varies greatly from city to city, and provides a reference for changes in city scale pollutant concentrations during the lockdown.

Abstract:To investigate the air quality change during the COVID-19 pandemic, we analyzed spatiotemporal variations of six criteria pollutants in nine typical urban agglomerations in China using ground-based data and examined meteorological influences through correlation analysis and backward trajectory analysis under different responses. Concentrations of PM2.5, PM10, NO2, SO2 and CO in urban agglomerations respectively decreased by 18%-45% (30%-62%), 17%-53% (22%-39%), 47%-64% (14%-41%), 9%-34% (0%-53%) and 16%-52% (23%-56%) during Lockdown (Post-lockdown) period relative to Pre-lockdown period. PM2.5 pollution events occurred during Lockdown in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebe (BTH) and Middle and South Liaoning (MSL), and daily O3 concentration rose to grade Ⅱ standard in Post-lockdown period. Distinct from the nationwide slump of NO2 during Lockdown period, a rebound (∼40%) in Post-lockdown period was observed in Cheng-Yu (CY), Yangtze River Middle-Reach (YRMR), Yangtze River Delta (YRD) and Pearl River Delta (PRD). With slightly higher wind speed compared with 2019, the reduction of PM2.5 (51%-62%) in Post-lockdown period is more than 2019 (15%-46%) in HC (Harbin-Changchun), MSL, BTH, CP (Central Plain) and SP (Shandong-Peninsula), suggesting lockdown measures are effective to PM2.5 alleviation. Although O3 concentrations generally increased during the lockdown, its increment rate declined compared with 2019 under similar sunlight duration and temperature. Additionally, unlike HC, MSL and BTH, which suffered from additional (> 30%) air masses from surrounding areas after the lockdown, the polluted air masses reaching YRD and PRD mostly originated from the long-distance transport, highlighting the importance of joint regional governance.

Abstract:In an attempt to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, China implemented a series of strict lockdown measures in 2020, such as restricted road usage and reduced population flow, to safeguard public health. The resulting reduction in anthropogenic pollution emissions caused by the lockdown is informative for researchers seeking to explore the relationship between anthropogenic factors and atmospheric pollutants. Therefore, this study explored severe urban air pollutants and their driving factors before and during the lockdown in China. Across 367 Chinese cities, the implementation of strict lockdown measures led to substantial reductions of 22%–55% in major air pollutants, including PM 10 , PM 2.5 , NO 2 , SO 2 , and CO. However, O 3 levels, which increased by approximately 58.0% during the lockdown, exhibited the opposite trend. This was potentially attributed to the consumption of NO x in the photooxidation process. To more thoroughly understand the relationship between air pollutants and their sources, four representative areas exhibiting considerable variations in air pollutant levels were selected: the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei region (BTH), the Fenwei Plain (FWP), the Yangtze River Delta (YRD), and Southern central China (SCC). The land-use regression (LUR) model was employed for this purpose. Before the lockdown, various factors such as road-related emissions, rural residential areas, and grassland areas accounted for 13.2%–21.7% of PM 2.5 and PM 10 concentrations in the FWP region. Conversely, in BTH, YRD, and SCC, land-use-related sources such as plowland areas played an increasingly crucial role, contributing 12.9%–33.6% to PM concentrations. Moreover, human spatial activities and land-use types contributed up to 21.0%, 31.7%, and 20.8% to the elevated levels of SO 2 , NO 2 , and CO over the selected regions. During the lockdown, the LUR models revealed that changes in PM 2.5 and PM 10 concentrations were strongly associated with the influences of plowland and grassland. However, for NO 2 , SO 2 , and CO, anthropogenic sources such as trucks on the road, industrial emissions, and construction areas were identified as the main driving factors. Additionally, analysis using the generalized additive model revealed that before the lockdown, high humidity levels exceeding 50% were associated with increases in PM 2.5 concentrations in the BTH and FWP regions. By contrast, during the lockdown, gas pollutants such as NO 2 and SO 2 emitted from livelihood-related activities had an effect on PM 2.5 levels, contributing 10%–15% across all four regions. Overall, this study provides crucial evidence to inform the formulation of well-informed air quality strategies by considering key influencing factors in the future.

Abstract:Lockdowns implemented in response to COVID-19 have caused an unprecedented reduction in global economic and transport activity. In this study, variation in the concentration of health-threatening air pollutants (PM2.5, NO2, and O3) pre- and post-lockdown was investigated at global, continental, and national scales. We analyzed ground-based data from >10,000 monitoring stations in 380 cities across the globe. Global-scale results during lockdown (March to May 2020) showed that concentrations of PM2.5 and NO2 decreased by 16.1% and 45.8%, respectively, compared to the baseline period (2015-2019). However, O3 concentration increased by 5.4%. At the continental scale, concentrations of PM2.5 and NO2 substantially dropped in 2020 across all continents during lockdown compared to the baseline, with a maximum reduction of 20.4% for PM2.5 in East Asia and 42.5% for NO2 in Europe. The maximum reduction in O3 was observed in North America (7.8%), followed by Asia (0.7%), while small increases were found in other continents. At the national scale, PM2.5 and NO2 concentrations decreased significantly during lockdown, but O3 concentration showed varying patterns among countries. We found maximum reductions of 50.8% for PM2.5 in India and 103.5% for NO2 in Spain. The maximum reduction in O3 (22.5%) was found in India. Improvements in air quality were temporary as pollution levels increased in cities since lockdowns were lifted. We posit that these unprecedented changes in air pollutants were mainly attributable to reductions in traffic and industrial activities. Column reductions could also be explained by meteorological variability and a decline in emissions caused by environmental policy regulations. Our results have implications for the continued implementation of strict air quality policies and emission control strategies to improve environmental and human health.

Abstract:To avoid the spread of COVID-19, China implemented strict prevention and control measures, resulting in dramatic variations in urban and regional air quality. With the complex effect from long-term emission mitigation and meteorology variation, an accurate evaluation of the net effect from lockdown on air quality changes has not been fully quantified. Here, we combined machine learning algorithm and Theil–Sen regression technique to eliminate meteorological and long-term trends effects on air pollutant concentrations and precisely detect concentrations changes those ascribed to lockdown measures in North China. Our results showed that, compared to the same period in 2015–2019, the adverse meteorology during the lockdown period (January 25th to March 15th) in early 2020 increased PM2.5 concentration in North China by 9.8 %, while the reduction of anthropogenic emissions led to a 32.2 % drop. Stagnant meteorological conditions have a more significant impact on the ground-level air quality in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region than that in Shanxi and Shandong provinces. After further striping out the effect of long-term emission reduction trend, the lockdown-derived NO2, PM2.5, and O3 shown variety change trend, and at −30.8 %, −27.6 %, and +10.0 %, respectively. Air pollutant changes during the lockdown could be overestimated up to 2-fold without accounting for the influences of meteorology and long-term trends. Further, with pollution reduction during the lockdown period, it would avoid 15,807 premature deaths in 40 cities. If with no deteriorate meteorological condition, the total avoided premature should increase by 1146.

Abstract:The COVID-19 lockdown measures have resulted in significant changes in human activities and thereby providing a natural experiment for understanding the underlying mechanism of air pollutants' response to emission changes. Here, we use surface observations, MODIS AOD, and Tropospheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) NO 2 columns to investigate the spatial and temporal changes of criteria air pollutants during various stages of lockdown across the Sichuan Basin (SCB) situated in southwestern China. Basin-wide declines of CO (-13.8%), NO 2 (-50.9%), and SO 2 (-16.1%) concentrations were observed during the lockdown period compared with the pre-lockdown period, which is mainly attributed to substantial reductions in anthropogenic emissions associated with traffic and industrial emissions. In spite of the significant reductions in anthropogenic emissions, elevated O 3 levels (up to 50.2%) and PM 2.5 exceedances were widely depicted due to unfavorable meteorological conditions. TROPOMI NO 2 columns show good agreement with reductions reported in the MEIC emission inventory, which further confirm the critical impacts of the COVID-19 lockdown on anthropogenic emissions. This work clearly shows the magnitude of changes and varied patterns of air pollutants in response to reduced anthropogenic emissions, demonstrating the crucial role of meteorological fields in causing air pollution even under considerable emission reductions in the SCB.

The Spatial Variation of the Influence of Lockdown on Air Quality across China and Its Major Influencing Factors during COVID-19

Abstract:China has experienced a series of COVID-19 recurrences in different cities across the country since 2020, and relatively strict (full lockdown) or lenient closure (semi-lockdown) strategies have been employed accordingly in each city. The differences in detailed transmission control measures during lockdown periods led to distinct effects on air quality, which has rarely been studied. To fill this gap, we examined the effects of semi-lockdown and full lockdown on six major airborne pollutants, based on 55 lockdown cases. For all lockdown cases, the concentrations of PM2.5, PM10, SO2, NO2 and CO were much lower than in previous years. Specifically, due to the stricter transmission control, the concentration of the five airborne pollutants experienced a much sharper decline during full lockdown. However, O-3 presented a different variation pattern during lockdown periods. Generally, O-3 concentrations presented a slight increase in semi-lockdown cases and a notable increase in full lockdown cases. Meanwhile, O-3 increased notably in northern China, particularly in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, while O-3 had a slight variation in southern China. The unique variation of O-3 across regions and lockdown types was mainly attributed to the spatial heterogeneity of O-3 formation regimes, especially the VOCs-controlled O-3 formation in northern China. Based on Geographical Detector, we examined the spatial continuity of natural and socio-economic factors on the variation of airborne pollutants during lockdown. In terms of meteorological factors, humidity and precipitation were the dominant factors for PM2.5 and PM10, respectively, while humidity and temperature were the dominant factors for O-3. In terms of socio-economic factors, the numbers of taxis and private cars were the dominant factors for PM2.5 and O-3 variations during lockdown. GD also revealed that the combination of natural and socio-economic factors had a significantly enhanced effect on airborne pollutants during lockdown. The combination of relative humidity and total area of urban built-up areas exerted the strongest interactive effects on both PM2.5 and O-3. This research highlighted the challenge for urban O-3 management, and suggested the control of VOCs emissions should be preferably considered, especially in northern China.
Distinct Regimes of O3 Response to COVID-19 Lockdown in China

Abstract:Restrictions on human activities remarkably reduced emissions of air pollutants in China during the COVID-19 lockdown periods. However, distinct responses of O3 concentrations were observed across China. In the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei (BTH) and Yangtze River Delta (YRD) regions, O3 concentrations were enhanced by 90.21 and 71.79% from pre-lockdown to lockdown periods in 2020, significantly greater than the equivalent concentrations for the same periods over 2015–2019 (69.99 and 43.62%, p < 0.001). In contrast, a decline was detected (−1.1%) in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region. To better understand the underlying causes for these inconsistent responses across China, we adopted the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (Lasso) and ordinary linear squares (OLS) methods in this study. Statistical analysis indicated that a sharp decline in nitrogen dioxide (NO2) was the major driver of enhanced O3 in the BTH region as it is a NOx-saturated region. In the YRD region, season-shift induced changes in the temperature/shortwave radiative flux, while lockdown induced declines in NO2, attributable to the rise in O3. In the PRD region, the slight drop in O3 is attributed to the decreased intensity of radiation. The distinct regimes of the O3 response to the COVID-19 lockdown in China offer important insights into different O3 control strategies across China.

Comparison of Air Pollutants during the Two COVID-19 Lockdown Periods in Winter 2019 and Spring 2022 in Shanghai, China

Abstract:During the winter of 2019, the global outbreak of COVID-19 prompted extensive research on urban air pollution under lockdown measures. However, these studies predominantly focused on winter conditions, thereby limiting investigations into changes in urban air pollutants during other seasons that were also subject to lockdown restrictions. Shanghai, China, has undergone two COVID-19 lockdown periods in two seasons: winter 2019 and spring 2022. The seasonal variations and human activities were represented by meteorological factors and nighttime light brightness in this paper, respectively. The reduction in human-related emissions during the two lockdown periods was estimated based on the targets outlined in China's Air Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan. The results showed significant reductions in NO2 and PM particles during the two lockdown periods, both accompanied by a notable increase in O3 concentration. In comparison to the winter lockdown, there was an approximate 40% decrease in the NO2 and PM2.5 concentrations in the spring, while the O3 concentration exhibited an increase of 48.81%. Furthermore, due to shifting wind patterns during the two lockdowns from winter to spring, the high-pollution core areas shifted 20–25 km southeastward in the spring. The PM particles and NO2 concentrations exhibited a considerable impact from human activities, whereas the O3 concentration was affected mostly by seasonal change and interactions among air pollutants. Compared to the corresponding non-lockdown condition, the concentration of CO decreased during the winter lockdown; however, it increased during the spring lockdown. The different change in CO concentration during the two lockdown periods was found to have a lower effect on the O3 concentration than that caused by changes in meteorological factors and nitrogen oxide (NO, NO2) concentrations. In summary, the impact of COVID-19 lockdown periods on urban air pollutants was more pronounced in spring compared to winter, and the interactions among air pollutants also underwent alterations.

Four-Month Changes in Air Quality During and after the COVID-19 Lockdown in Six Megacities in China

Abstract:The pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) resulted in a stringent lockdown in China to reduce the infection rate. We adopted a machine learning technique to analyze the air quality impacts of the COVID-19 lockdown from January to April 2020 for six megacities with different lockdown durations. Compared with the scenario without lockdowns, we estimated that the lockdown reduced ambient NO2 concentrations by 36-53% during the most restrictive periods, which involved Level-1 public health emergency response control actions. Several cities lifted the Level-1 control actions during February and March, and the avoided NO2 concentrations subsequently dropped below 10% in late April. Traffic analysis during the same periods in Beijing and Chengdu confirmed that traffic emission changes were a major factor in the substantial NO2 reduction, but they were also associated with increased O3 concentrations. The lockdown also reduced PM2.5 concentrations, although heavy pollution episodes occurred on certain days due to the enhanced formation of secondary aerosols in association with the increased atmospheric oxidizing capacity. We also observed that the changes in air pollution levels decreased as the lockdown was gradually eased in various cities.

Abstract:To prevent the spread of COVID-19, China enacted a series of strict policies, which reduced anthropogenic activities to a near standstill. This provided a precious window to explore its effects on the spatio-temporal distribution of air pollution in Beijing, China. In this study, continuous wavelet transforms and spatial interpolation methods were used to explore the spatiotemporal variations in air pollutants and their lockdown effects. The results indicate that except O 3 , the annual average concentration of NO 2 , PM 2.5 and SO 2 showed a decreasing trend during 2016 and 2019; NO 2 , PM 2.5 and SO 2 show a trend of "low in summer and high in winter"; the diurnal variation of NO 2 concentration was mainly related to the rush hours of traffic volume, with the first peak at the morning peak (7:00), and then accumulating gradually to second peak (22:00). The continuous wavelet analysis shows that PM2.5, SO 2 and NO 2 had four primary periods, while O 3 only had two primary periods. The high NO 2 concentration areas were mainly in Dongcheng, Xicheng, Chaoyang and Fengtai, while the low concentration areas were located in the northern areas, such as Miyun and Huairou; the PM 2.5 concentration decreased from south to north; this characteristic presented more obviously in winter. Compared to the pre-lockdown, NO 2 and SO 2 decreased considerably during lockdown, whereas PM 2.5 and O 3 increased dramatically. The contribution rates of transportation activities to the NO 2 , O 3 , PM 2.5 and SO 2 were estimated be 9.4 % ∼ 17.2 %, −76.4 % ∼ −42.9 %, −39.5 % ∼ –22.8 % and 5.7 % ∼ 43.7 %, respectively; the contribution rates of industrial activities were 19.9 % ∼ 26.7 %, 7.8 % ∼ 30.9 %, 1.6 % ∼ 36.2 % and −10.5 % ∼ 15.9 %, respectively. Considering meteorological factors, we inferred that pauses in anthropogenic activities indeed help improving air pollution, but it is difficult to offset the impact of extreme weather. These findings can enhance our understanding on the sources of air pollution, and can therefore provide insights on urban air pollution mitigation.

Abstract:The COVID-19 restrictions in 2020 have led to distinct variations in NO 2 and O 3 concentrations in China. Here, the different drivers of anthropogenic emission changes, including the effects of the Chinese New Year (CNY), China's 2018–2020 Clean Air Plan (CAP), and the COVID-19 lockdown and their impact on NO 2 and O 3 are isolated by using a combined model-measurement approach. In addition, the contribution of prevailing meteorological conditions to the concentration changes was evaluated by applying a machine-learning method. The resulting impact on the multi-pollutant Health-based Air Quality Index (HAQI) is quantified. The results show that the CNY reduces NO 2 concentrations on average by 26.7% each year, while the COVID-lockdown measures have led to an additional 11.6% reduction in 2020, and the CAP over 2018–2020 to a reduction in NO 2 by 15.7%. On the other hand, meteorological conditions from 23 January to March 7, 2020 led to increase in NO 2 of 7.8%. Neglecting the CAP and meteorological drivers thus leads to an overestimate and underestimate of the effect of the COVID-lockdown on NO 2 reductions, respectively. For O 3 the opposite behavior is found, with changes of +23.3%, +21.0%, +4.9%, and −0.9% for CNY, COVID-lockdown, CAP, and meteorology effects, respectively. The total effects of these drivers show a drastic reduction in multi-air pollutant-related health risk across China, with meteorology affecting particularly the Northeast of China adversely. Importantly, the CAP's contribution highlights the effectiveness of the Chinese government's air-quality regulations on NO 2 reduction.

Abstract:In late January 2020, China’s rapid and strict control measures to curb the COVID‐19 spread led to a sharp halt in socio‐economic activity and a significant reduction in emissions. Using the ground‐based observational data, the authors synergistically quantify the nation‐wide variations of major air pollutant as well as meteorology during and after the lockdown. Their concentrations (except O3) exhibited significant reduction during February and March 2020, by more than 24% during the lockdown compared with the earlier time period and by more than 17% compared with that in the same period in 2019. In contrast, ozone increased rapidly by about 60% across the country during the lockdown. Abnormal increases in carbon monoxide and particulate matter concentrations in southwest China are attributed to the severe wildfires in Southeast Asia. The concentration of air pollutants bounced back rapidly after the full‐scale reopen in March 2020, indicating the decisive role of emissions in the pollution formation.

Abstract:COVID-19 has significantly impacted people's daily lives worldwide in the past three years. During the COVID-19 lockdown in China, people's activities were restricted, private cars were banned, and some factories were shut down. It is expected that air pollution would be mitigated due to the reduction of automobile exhaust and factory pollution gas emissions during the COVID-19 lockdown. In this study, a city-level comparative study was investigated to quantify the impact of lockdown on air pollution in China. The concentration changes of air pollutants (NO 2 , SO 2 , CO, PM 2.5 , PM 10 ) caused by the lockdown are studied covering 345 cities in China. The sensitivity analysis method was adopted to explore the variation scale of pollutant concentration in typical cities. Furthermore, the spatial distribution of pollutant changes between 2019 and 2020 and typical months are discussed using a composite index. The results showed that NO 2 , SO 2 and PM 10 concentrations had a significant reduction due to the lockdown, ranging from 15 to 30%. Pollutant emissions of 321 cities in February and March 2020 fell noticeably, and 272 cities showed a rebound of pollutant emissions after April 2020 when work and production resumed. The lessons learned from COVID-19 lockdowns offer valuable insights into how cities can better prepare for future crises and improve their resilience and adaptability.

Abstract:To overcome the spread of the severe COVID-19 outbreak, various lockdown measures have been taken worldwide. China imposed the strictest home-quarantine measures during the COVID-19 outbreak in the year 2020. This provides a valuable opportunity to study the impact of anthropogenic emission reductions on air quality. Based on the GEE platform and satellite imagery, this study analyzed the changes in the concentrations of NO2, O3, CO, and SO2 in the same season (1 February–1 May) before and after the epidemic control (2019–2021) for 16 typical representative cities of China. The results showed that NO2 concentrations significantly decreased by around 20–24% for different types of metropolises, whereas O3 increased for most of the studied metropolises, including approximately 7% in megacities and other major cities. Additionally, the concentrations of CO and SO2 showed no statistically significant changes during the study intervals. The study also indicated strong variations in air pollutants among different geographic regions. In addition to the methods in this study, it is essential to include the differences in meteorological impact factors in the study to identify future references for air pollution reduction measures.
