Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), a two-dimensional layered material, has attracted ever-growing interest as one of the most promising non-noble-metal electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, its catalytic efficiency is far from that of the best-performing Pt-based catalysts due to insufficient active sites and poor conductivity. Herein, density functional theory (DFT) simulations indicate that the catalytic activity of MoS2 could be improved through synergistic effects between the graphene substrate and Ni atom adsorption. Following this result, we designed and synthesized dual-modified MoS2 nanosheets with nanoporous Ni and reduced graphite oxide, which show a low onset potential (85 mV), a small Tafel slope (71.3 mV dec–1), and a high cycling stability as HER catalysts. Abstract:Optimizing interfacial contacts and thus electron transfer phenomena in heterogeneous electrocatalysts is an effective approach for enhancing electrocatalytic performance. Herein, we successfully synthesized ultrafine β-Mo2C nanoparticles confined within hollow capsules of nitrogen-doped porous carbon (β-Mo2C@NPCC) and found that the surface layer of molybdenum atoms was further oxidized to a single Mo–O surface layer, thus producing intimate O–Mo–C interfaces. An arsenal of complementary technologies, including XPS, atomic-resolution HAADF-STEM, and XAS analysis clearly reveals the existence of O–Mo–C interfaces for these surface-engineered ultrafine nanostructures. The β-Mo2C@NPCC electrocatalyst exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in water. Theoretical studies indicate that the highly accessible ultrathin O–Mo–C interfaces serving as the active sites are crucial to the HER performance and underpinned the outstanding electrocatalytic performance of β-Mo2C@NPCC. This proof-of-concept study opens a new avenue for the fabrication of highly efficient catalysts for HER and other applications, whilst further demonstrating the importance of exposed interfaces and interfacial contacts in efficient electrocatalysis.

Abstract:Probing competent electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) of water splitting is one of the most hopeful approaches to confront the energy and environmental crisis. Herein, we highlight ultrathin N-doped Mo2C nanosheets (N-Mo2C NSs) in the role of greatly efficient platinum free-based electrocatalysts for the HER. The transformation of crystal phase and structure between MoO2 nanosheets with a thickness of similar to 1.1 nm and N-Mo2C NSs with a thickness of similar to 1.0 nm is studied in detail. Structural analyses make clear that the surfaces of the N-Mo2C NSs are absolutely encompassed by apical Mo atoms, hence affording an ideal catalyst prototype to expose the role of Mo atoms for the duration of HER catalysis. Theoretical calculations demonstrate that the nanosheet structure, N doping, and particular crystalline phase of Mo2C produce more exposed Mo active sites, including Mo atoms on the C plane and doped N atoms. Through detailed electrochemical investigations, N-Mo2C NSs possess HER activity with an onset potential of -48.3 mV vs RHE, Tafel slope of 44.5 mV dec(-1), and overpotential of 99 mV vs RHE at the cathodic current density of 10 mA cm(-2) with excellent long-term stability. Lastly, the calcination temperature and dicyandiamide amount can obviously affect the phase transformation and surface structure of molybdenum carbide, resulting in an adjustable HER activity. This synthesis mechanism-will facilitate the understanding and optimization of Mo-based electrocatalysts in the energy conversion field.

Abstract:Mo2C and WC are widely considered as promising electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) owing to their Pt-like electronic features. Herein, dual-phased Mo2C-WC nanocrystals, densely and uniformly confined in ultrathin carbon nanosheet assemblies (abbreviated as Mo2C-WC/NCAs), which are possible candidates for high-performance HER electrocatalysts, are fabricated through the in-situ pyrolysis of polymers containing Mo and W. When evaluated as HER electrocatalysts, Mo2C-WC/NCAs requires a small overpotential of similar to 126 mV to drive a current density of 10 mA cm(-2), and low Tafel slopes of 72 mV dec(-1) and 59 mV dec(-1) in acidic and alkaline media, respectively. In addition, the Mo2C-WC/NCAs exhibit robust catalytic stability up to 36 h. The introduction of dual-phased carbide heterostructures can modify the electronic structure and simultaneously facilitate the charge transfer of the catalysts, consistent with the density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This work highlights the in-situ construction of multi-phased hetero-metal carbide heterostructures for high-performance electrocatalysis.

Abstract:Molybdenum Disulfide (MoS$_2$) has been recognized as a potential substitution of Platinum (Pt) for electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, the broad adoption of MoS$_2$ is hindered by its limited number of active sites and relatively low inherent electrical conductivity. In this work, we demonstrated a synergistic enhancement of both active site exposure and electrical conductivity by a one-step solvothermal synthesis technique. The 1T-phase enriched MoS$_2$ was directly formed on the titanium carbide (Ti$_3$C$_2$Tx, MXene) with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) acting as crosslinks. The existence of edge-enriched metallic phase MoS$_2$, the conductive backbone of MXene along with the crosslinking function of CNTs clearly improved the overall electrical conductivity of the catalyst. Moreover, the integration of two-dimensional (2D) MoS$_2$ with MXene effectively suppressed the MXene oxidation and 2D layer restacking, leading to good catalytic stability. As a result, an overpotential of 169 mV and a low Tafel slope of 51 mV/dec was successfully achieved. This work provides a new route for 2D-based electrocatalyst engineering and sheds light on the development of the next-generation PGM-free HER electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Two-dimensional Mo/Mo2C heteronanosheets (Mo/Mo2C-HNS) were successfully prepared via a NaCl template-assisted synthesis route followed by a controllable simultaneous reduction and carbonization of MoO3 nanosheets for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysis under both acidic and alkaline conditions. The Mo species in the atomically thin Mo/Mo2C-HNS not only guarantees the rapid transport of electrons but also optimizes the electronic configuration of beta-Mo2C. Besides, the abundant Mo/beta-Mo2C heterointerfaces in nanodimension afford large numbers of additional heterogeneous catalytic sites. HER electrocatalytic performance with overpotential of merely 89 mV to drive a current density of 10 mA/cm(2) in 0.5 M H2SO4 is therefore achieved. Strikingly, stable chronoamperometric electrolysis for 20 h and also an impressive cycling stability with negligible overpotential decay over 4000 sweeps demonstrate its considerable durability in an acidic environment. These findings highlight the promising potential of Mo/Mo2C-HNS catalyst as an efficient and stable noble metal-free electrocatalyst toward the HER.
Molybdenum Carbide Nanoparticles Coated into the Graphene Wrapping N‐Doped Porous Carbon Microspheres for Highly Efficient Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution Both in Acidic and Alkaline Media

Abstract:Molybdenum carbide (Mo2C) is recognized as an alternative electrocatalyst to noble metal for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, a facile, low cost, and scalable method is provided for the fabrication of Mo2C-based eletrocatalyst (Mo2C/G-NCS) by a spray-drying, and followed by annealing. As-prepared Mo2C/G-NCS electrocatalyst displays that ultrafine Mo2C nanopartilces are uniformly embedded into graphene wrapping N-doped porous carbon microspheres derived from chitosan. Such designed structure offer several favorable features for hydrogen evolution application: 1) the ultrasmall size of Mo2C affords a large exposed active sites; 2) graphene-wrapping ensures great electrical conductivity; 3) porous structure increases the electrolyte-electrode contact points and lowers the charge transfer resistance; 4) N-dopant interacts with H+ better than C atoms and favorably modifies the electronic structures of adjacent Mo and C atoms. As a result, the Mo2C/G-NCS demonstrates superior HER activity with a very low overpotential of 70 or 66 mV to achieve current density of 10 mA cm(-2), small Tafel slope of 39 or 37 mV dec(-1), respectively, in acidic and alkaline media, and high stability, indicating that it is a great potential candidate as HER electrocatalyst.

Abstract:A novel electrocatalyst, Ni‐Co/β‐Mo2C@C, was rationally engineered to enhance the efficiency of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). An innovative template‐engaged strategy was employed to synthesize hierarchical nanosheet‐based MoO3@(Ni&Co)MoO4 nanorods, which were subsequently transformed into hierarchical Ni‐Co/β‐Mo2C@C through direct carburization at high temperature. Benefitting from several structural advantages including large exposed surface, fast charge transfer, Ni‐Co dual‐doping, and unique hierarchical structure, the prepared Ni‐Co/β‐Mo2C@C exhibited exceptional electrocatalytic performance for HER in acidic conditions, characterized by a low overpotential and remarkable stability. Comprehensive Summary A novel electrocatalyst, Ni‐Co/β‐Mo2C@C, was rationally designed to enhance the efficiency of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in this work. Assembled with two‐dimensional Ni‐Co nanosheets onto Mo2C nanorods coated with a thin carbon shell, the catalyst demonstrates remarkable performance, including low overpotential (η10 = 57 mV) and reduced Tafel slope (63 mV·dec–1) in 0.5 mol·L–1 H2SO4 electrolyte. This innovative design strategy provides abundant active sites and efficient electron/ion transport pathways, effectively shortening reactant diffusion distances and enhancing electrocatalytic activity. Additionally, the carbon shell coating protects the catalyst from etching and agglomeration, ensuring its durability. This work presents a promising approach for engineering highly efficient metal carbide‐based HER catalysts through tailored composition and nanostructure design.

Abstract:Mo2C nanoparticles are embedded into graphite nanosheet (GNS) matrix via a simple carburization process. The structures of the as-prepared Mo2C/GNS hybrid are characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman, thermogravimetric analyses, and N-2 adsorption-desorption isotherm. Structural characterization results reveal strong coupling interaction of the Mo2C and carbon support. The resulting Mo2C/GNS is examined as electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction in neutral, acidic and alkaline solutions. Electrochemical results indicate that the Mo2C/GNS possesses outstanding activity as well as durability. At a current density of 10 mA cm(-2), overpotentials are determined to be 136, 82 and 73 mV in neutral, acidic and alkaline solutions, respectively. Abstract:Transition carbides have been studied as one of the most promising non-precious-metal catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) due to analogous electronic structure to precious metals. Herein, molybdenum carbide nanoparticles supported on nitrogen-doped carbon (Mo2C/NC) have been successfully synthesized through a facile and environmentally-friendly hydrothermal method. The nitrogen content is adjusted by varying the molar ratio of glucose (G) and glucosamine hydrochloride (GH). With an optimal G/GH ratio of 0.6, Mo2C/NC-0.6 nanoparticles exhibit a low onset reduction potential of 95mV with a Tafel slope of 79.2mVdec−1, an overpotential of 168mV at cathodic current density of 10mAcm−2 and good stability in acidic media. The high electrocatalytic activity of Mo2C/NC-0.6 can be attributed to high specific surface area, synergistic effect between Mo2C and N species, and the conductive N-doped carbonaceous matrix. This study may provide a promising strategy for synthesizing efficient water splitting catalysts with great electrocatalytic activities.

Abstract:Exploration of noble-metal-free, highly-efficient and durable catalysts for Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) remains a challenge. In this work, the development of carbon-coated cobalt-molybdenum-phosphide nanosheets supported on carbon cloth (Co-Mo-P@C) is successfully demonstrated. To obtain a better electrocatalystic performance, the different amount of glucose was added into the reaction system during hydrothermal process. Benefiting from the 2D structure, high electrical conductivity and sufficient active sites, the Co-Mo-P@C contained 0.5 mmol glucose exhibits relatively good catalytic activity for HER with low over poentials at -96 mV and -162 mV @ 10 mA cm(-2) in acidic and alkaline medias respectively and the Tafel slope of 52.9 mV dec(-1) and 34.3 mV dec(-1). Carbon Nanotube Supported Molybdenum Carbide as Robust Electrocatalyst for Efficient Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:Molybdenum carbide is considered to be one of the most competitive catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) regarding its high catalytic activity and superior corrosion resistance. But the low electrical conductivity and poor interfacial contact with the current collector greatly inhibit its practical application capability. Herein, carbon nanotube (CNT) supported molybdenum carbide was assembled via electrostatic adsorption combined with complex bonding. The N-doped molybdenum carbide nanocrystals were uniformly anchored on the surfaces of amino CNTs, which depressed the agglomeration of nanoparticles while strengthening the migration of electrons. The optimized catalyst (250-800-2h) showed exceptional electrocatalytic performance towards HER under both acidic and alkaline conditions. Especially in 0.5 M H2SO4 solution, the 250-800-2h catalyst exhibited a low overpotential of 136 mV at a current density of 10 mA/cm2 (η10) with the Tafel slope of 49.9 mV dec−1, and the overpotential only increased 8 mV after 20,000 cycles of stability test. The active corrosive experiment revealed that more exposure to high-activity γ-Mo2N promoted the specific mass activity of Mo, thus, maintaining the catalytic durability of the catalyst.

Abstract:Developing highly-efficient and stable hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts plays a crucial role in realizing the hydrogen production from electrocatalytic water splitting. Herein, ultra-small and nitrogen-doped molybdenum carbide (N-Mo2C) nanoparticles with oxidized surfaces are facilely synthesized with the assistance of cationic surfactants and simultaneously anchored onto three-dimensional nitrogen-doped flower-like carbon nanospheres (NFCNS), and the N-Mo2C/NFCNS composites are further investigated as HER electrocatalysts. Analysis results reveal that nitrogen atoms are doped into both the lattice and the carbon framework of Mo2C, resulting in low desorption energy of Mo-H bond for the easy evolution of hydrogen gas. Moreover, the high specific area of NFCNS enables enrichment of N-Mo2C nanoparticles, and its open framework facilitates fast ion diffusion. As a result, the N-Mo2C/NFCNS composites exhibit impressive HER activities with low overpotential, small Tafel slope, and excellent durability in both acidic and alkaline media, which outperform most of the reported Mo-based HER catalysts and are also highly comparable to the commercial Pt/C catalyst. Not limited to HER electrocatalysts, this work should open a new avenue for tailoring highly-efficient carbon/metal compounds-based electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction, oxygen evolution reaction, nitrogen reduction reaction, etc.

Abstract:In this study, ultra-thin and porous molybdenum selenide (MoSe2) nanosheets were prepared through a modified liquid exfoliation method as efficient electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). This novel structure enables the exposure of more catalytically active sites and moreover maintains effective electron transport, resulting in a small peak potential of ∼75 mV as well as long-term durability. In addition, due to the facile and economical preparation method as well as its eco-friendly synthetic conditions, this study provides a high-performance HER catalyst with promising commercial application prospects.

Because of the high electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reactivity (HER) of ultrafine Mo2C nanocrystals and edges of two-dimensional MoS2, an electrode with a synergistic integration of these two nanomaterials is expected to show a better HER performance. Here we report this hybrid nanostructure of vertically aligned MoS2/Mo2C nanosheets on conductive carbon paper. It was revealed that the original structure of MoS2 nanosheets remains intact after the carburization, but the surfaces are incorporated with either Mo2C nanodomains or a heteroatomic mixture of S and C. The hybrid catalyst exhibits a much lower HER overpotential in comparison to those of the corresponding Mo2C and MoS2 alone. Its high activity is congruent with DFT calculations, which show that multiple S and C coordinated Mo sites with near zero Gibbs free energy of hydrogen adsorption exist. Thus, the low overpotential of this binder-free hybrid catalyst is a result of active sites of Mo-S-C and highly dispersed Mo2C nanodomains on the original edges and basal planes of MoS2. Abstract:A highly active and stable electrochemical catalyst of nanoporous molybdenum carbide nanowires (np-Mo2C NWs) has been developed for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The np-Mo2C NWs were synthesized simply by pyrolysis of a MoOx,/amine hybrid precursor with sub-nanosized periodic structure under an inert atmosphere. The enriched nanoporosity and large reactive surface of these highly dispersed nanowires with uniform Mo2C nanocrystallites provide an efficient electrocatalysis, leading to their superior HER activity with lower onset overpotential and higher current densities than Mo2C microparticles. This study opens a new perspective for the development of highly active non-noble electrocatalysts for hydrogen production from water splitting.

Abstract:By increasing the density of exposed active edges, the perpendicularly oriented structure of MoSe2 nanosheets facilitates ion/electrolyte transport at the electrode interface and minimizes the restacking of nanosheets, while the graphene improves the electrical contact between the catalyst and the electrode. This makes the MoSe2 /graphene hybrid perfect as a catalyst in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). It shows a greatly improved catalytic activity compared with bare MoSe2 nanosheets.
